I very strongly believe this is one of the key solutions for climate change mitigation, and more generally, about creating 'circular finance' mechanisms, i.e. rewarding generative, rather than extractive activity: https://vimeo.com/299326236 -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: The Energy 202: No 'unanimity' on Green New Deal, says key House Democrat
by Michel Bauwens 13 Feb '19

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Other News <news(a)other-net.info> Date: Tue, Feb 12, 2019 at 8:53 PM Subject: The Energy 202: No 'unanimity' on Green New Deal, says key House Democrat To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/other-net/the-energy-202-no-unanimity-on-green-new-deal-…>. *The Energy 202: No 'unanimity' on Green New Deal, says key House Democrat* *By Dino Grandoni / PowerPost* February 12, 2019 - A pair of prominent Democrats on Thursday released a sweeping and long-awaited measure outlining what they are calling a “Green New Deal.” Invoking President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s years-long effort to drag the country out of the Great Depression, they are calling for nothing short of a top-to-bottom renovation of the U.S. economy in order to halt man-made climate change. Their measure was greeted rapturously by climate activists eager to stop what they see as a looming threat. Immediately, it had the backing of four Democratic senators who have launched bids for the 2020 presidential nomination. It is still early days for the Green New Deal. But fault lines within the Democratic caucus were already visible before the end of the day, with some members urging caution about setting vague and, at times, impossible-to-achieve goals to only fall short. And perhaps most importantly, the plan has yet to get the formal backing of one crucial Democrat: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). "It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive,” Pelosi told Politico on Wednesday. “The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it right?” “There’s not unanimity,” said Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), who backs the Green New Deal proposal and chairs the House Natural Resources Committee. “I’m sure there’s colleagues that feel that should have been more prescriptive than it is. And I’m sure there’s colleagues that feel that we’re providing an issue to the other side.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), whose star only seems to be rising in the Democratic Party, and Sen. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), who led the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming when he was in the House, introduced the measure, a nonbinding resolution, that they say opens the debate on how to craft tangible legislation on an idea that until now essentially served as a campaign slogan. Markey and Ocasio-Cortez are calling for the United States to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero within 10 years and eliminate climate-warming pollution from the transportation sector “as much as is technologically possible." And they want to do so while checking off a number of other progressive goals, like increasing access to housing, health care and education for what they call “frontline” communities, or Americans who are low-income, indigenous and people of color. The proposal advanced by the Democrats is still vague, perhaps in a bid to garner broad support -- Ocasio-Cortez and Markey attracted roughly 60 House members and nine senators as initial co-sponsors. Endorsements from Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), each of whom are running for president, signal the Green New Deal will be an ongoing issue in the 2020 election. Many observers saw Pelosi’s “green dream” comment as dismissive. Before the end of the day, the satirical newspaper The Onion published a story headlined: “Nancy Pelosi Signals Support For Environmental Causes By Placing Green New Deal Directly Into Recycling Bin.” But proponents of the proposal embraced Pelosi’s language. "I think it is a green dream,” Ocasio-Cortez said at a press conference rolling out the Green New Deal. “I don’t consider that to be a dismissive term. I think it’s a great term.” And the speaker was more welcoming of the proposal at her own press conference Thursday morning. “I haven’t seen it," Pelosi said, “but I do know that it’s enthusiastic and we welcome all the enthusiasms that are out there.” Still, Pelosi is charting her own course on climate change with her power as speaker. On that same morning, Pelosi named the Democratic lawmakers who will serve on a new select committee on climate change. She eschewed a request that committee members be required not to take fossil-fuel money. Green New Deal proponents also wanted the committee to embrace that term, but Pelosi ended up naming the committee the "House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis." "The energy industry is complicated," said select committee member and Democratic freshman Rep. Sean Casten (Ill.). He has not endorsed the Green New Deal yet, but of it he added: "The aspiration's beautiful, right? I want to live in a world that has has green jobs. I want to live in a world that has an equitable distribution of resources." Other Democrats expressed more skepticism about slashing carbon emissions that quickly. “I’m not sure a 10-year goal for carbon-free electricity is realistic,” said Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine who caucuses with the Democrats, adding that he had yet to read the draft. “And I used to be in the renewable power business," he added, referring to his time as a wind-energy executive. King isn’t alone. As the price of wind and solar energy falls due to technological advances, the share of U.S. electricity from renewable sources has grown precipitously to 17 percent in 2017. But few experts think that figure can get to 100 percent anytime soon. “The idea of an all renewable energy economy by 2030 is just unrealistic,” said Ernest Moniz, Barack Obama’s energy secretary. “And putting forward unrealistic goals in my view may impede our progress if it starts to leave behind key constituencies." Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), the ranking member on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee said he had not read the plan yet. “They never shared it with us until today... I just want to bring everybody together. We have to all settle on the same set of facts." It’s unclear how Democrats plan to proceed. Green New Deal backers envision a series of bills and subsequent programs — similar to the New Deal — that will be taken up by multiple committees and passed over a number of years. Already in the House, the resolution has the backing of Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), the head of the Rules Committee, and Grijalva, its Natural Resources chief. But other committee heads, like Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-N.J.), who spoke in soaring terms just the day before about addressing climate change during a House hearing on the subject, stopped short of a full endorsement. “When it comes to combating climate change, all options need to be on the table," he said. “Yesterday, we had our first hearing on climate change, and that will be the first of many. This plan will be part of our discussion.” Ocasio-Cortez and Markey sought to walk a fine line with their proposal in order to win as much support of it as possible. To court labor groups, for example, court labor groups, which often worry about the effect environmental regulations have on job numbers, the proposal guarantees every American a high-paying job. It also does not include an outright ban on fossil fuels, which some close to the bill see as a concession to moderates. Some environmental activists defend that decision, saying the investments in green energy would make the ban unnecessary. “The fossil fuel industry will not transition willingly and on its own to life-sustaining, renewable practices, because it is determined to trash our planet for its profit no matter the cost,” said Janet Redman, head of Greenpeace USA. The plan also does not explicitly exclude some major forms of low-emissions electricity as some observers worried it would — mainly, nuclear energy and hydropower. “It is an incredibly smart decision to embrace all carbon free technologies that can help us reach our emissions goals,” said Lindsey Walter, an energy policy adviser at the center-left think tank Third Way. Mike DeBonis, Jeff Stein and Paulina Firozi contributed reporting. More on the select climate committee: In addition to Sean Casten, the new members will be Democratic Reps. Kathy Castor (Fla.), who will chair the committee, Ben Ray Luján (N.M.), Suzanne Bonamici (Ore.), Julia Brownley (Calif.), Jared Huffman (Calif.), Mike Levin (Calif.), A. Donald McEachin (Va.) and Joe Neguse (Colo.). Republicans have yet to name their members. Notably missing from the list is Ocasio-Cortez: But she stressed at a news conference it was "not a snub" since she declined to join it. “I will not allow our caucus to be divided up by silly notions of whatever narrative. We are in this together, we are 100 percent in this together,” she said. About those new climate committee members: The nine Democrats on the committee received a combined total of $198,000 in donations from the fossil fuel industry’s political action committees during the midterm elections, HuffPost reports, citing data from the Center for Responsive Politics. Luján received the most of the group, at $117,000 from oil, gas, mining, and utility PACs, which made up 6 percent of the donations he raised. Levin, who has since signed the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge, received $1,500 from a trade group that lobbies for highway gas stations. Neguse received $1,000, but a spokeswoman for the congressman said he turned down that donation, and said Neguse plans to take the no fossil fuel pledge, per the report. — Remembering John Dingell: John D. Dingell Jr., the longest-serving member of Congress in U.S. history, died at his home in Dearborn, Mich. at the age of 92, The Post's Emma Brown writes. A member of the House from 1955 to 2015, the Democrat chaired the Energy and Commerce Committee several times. He used to define the jurisdiction of the committee by pointing to a photograph of Earth taken from space. Dingell co-wrote the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. He also “became one of conservationists’ prime enemies for his fierce opposition to tightening fuel-efficiency standards,” Brown writes — so much so that in 2008, environmental advocate Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.) successfully challenged the Detriot-area representative for the Energy and Commerce chairmanship and called him “a determined opponent on clean air, climate change and energy issues.” — Trump speaks with California governor after threat to cut off fire aid: In an interview with the Los Angeles Times and other regional newspapers, the president was asked whether he still believes the government should restrict federal aid to California over its forest management. Trump didn't explicitly repeat his threat, the Times reports. “I told my people, I said we cannot continue to spend billions of dollars, billions and billions of dollars,” he said, adding: “Forest fires are totally preventable. They shouldn’t happen.” He described a call with Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) that followed a tweet last month in which he ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency to “send no more money” unless “they get their act together.” “He was very respectful as to my point of view,” Trump said about Newsom. “I think he agrees with me. I respect the fact that he called.” — New seismic activity in ANWR paused for winter: Interior Department officials said this week no new seismic testing will occur in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge this winter after questions emerged about how the surveys would affect local polar pear populations and tundra conditions, E&E News reports. The decision was announced at a public meeting in Kaktovik, Alaska. “This week's disclosure came at a time when regulators are seeking public comments on Interior's draft environmental impact statement for drilling in the coastal plain,” per the report. “Interior's decision not to allow seismic surveys this winter means no new data will be gathered on the 1.6-million-acre coastal plain until the ground refreezes next winter.” — Another day, another set of rules rolled back: The Trump administration proposed exempting some lightbulbs from energy efficiency standards, rolling back Obama-era rules increasing the number of lightbulbs required to meet the standards set set to take effect next year. “The proposal would remove three-way bulbs, candle-shaped bulbs used in chandeliers, reflector bulbs used in recessed lighting, and others from having to comply with the new efficiency standards,” Reuters reports. The Energy 202 wrote in August about a document published and later deleted from the Energy Department’s website signaling the change. — PG&E’s wildfire woes: The state’s largest utility says it will shut off power to more areas of service in California during high-risk conditions to try to prevent deadly wildfires. The plan, which PG&E filed with state regulators this week, includes expanding tree clearing, strengthening equipment inspection and installing more weather stations to spot fire risk early, the Wall Street Journal reports. — Venezuela watch: As a result of the U.S. sanctions imposed on Venezuelan oil, there are 21 tankers with 9.6 million barrels of oil that have been stranded off the U.S. Gulf Coast. “Some buyers had purchased the cargoes ahead of U.S. sanctions imposed last week, using the vessels as floating storage,” Reuters reports. “Others weighed how to pay under new rules, according to traders, shippers and data from Refinitiv Eikon.” — How climate change is making hurricanes strengthen faster: New research suggests climate change has made hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean “considerably worse,” The Post's Chris Mooney and Brady Dennis report. A trend of rapid intensification — where storms quickly strengthen from Category 1 to Category 4 or 5 — has emerged in recent years. “Natural variability cannot explain the magnitude of the observed upward trend,” the researchers wrote in the study published in Nature Communications. “Rapid intensification is exceedingly dangerous because people, they’re not warned adequately, they’re not prepared, many of them don’t evacuate,” Jim Kossin, study author and a hurricane expert with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told The Post. — Heading to Key West soon? Make sure to pack the right sunscreen. The Key West City Commission voted 6 to 1 this week to ban sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemicals shown to harm coral reefs, The Post’s Lindsey Bever reports. After Hawaii became the first state to pass a similar ban, Key West voted to ban the sale of these products in the city starting in January 2021. Mayor Teri Johnston said she hopes tourists will follow the ban, too. “I hope it will make consumers more aware and responsible for their actions,” she told The Post in an interview. She wants people to “flip over their sunscreens and look at the ingredients and make wise choices for themselves and their families.” *By Dino Grandoni / PowerPost* <https://other-news.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e397bb7f243b9efb847d5…> <https://other-news.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e397bb7f243b9efb847d5…> <https://other-news.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e397bb7f243b9efb847d5…> The figures speak clearly: we have a deadline of 12 years after which climate change becomes irreversible. Fwd: A World Political Party: The Time Has Come (GTN Discussion)
by Michel Bauwens 13 Feb '19

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Great Transition Network <gtnetwork(a)greattransition.org> Date: Wed, Feb 13, 2019 at 5:43 AM Subject: A World Political Party: The Time Has Come (GTN Discussion) To: <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> >From Heikki Patomäki <heikki.patomaki(a)gmail.com> ------------------------------------------------------- The Time for a World Political Party is now: A Response to Critics Heikki Patomäki In the future, we will see many world political parties (WPPs). The idea of a WPP is generic. While our capacity to envisage our common existence from a planetary perspective and to organize politics accordingly is valuable in itself, I am advocating a particular vision for the form such a party could take. This ambiguity has triggered a number of critical comments, so let me be clear: what I propose is that we establish a democratic socialist world party. At the same time, however, I believe that in a pluralistic and non-Eurocentric world, there will be other simultaneous and substantive ideals around which future politics revolve. What could a democratic socialist world party do under the current institutional and political-economic conditions? As Karl Marx famously said, actors “make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past.” Certainly, there have been better world-historical moments for global democratic ideas, such as the end of the two world wars and the 1990s. If anything, the world is now disintegrating, in part as a result of the rise of nationalist populism. This rise has been strongly fueled by the 2008–9 crisis and its consequences, but its deeper causes are related to the process of neoliberalization that started back in the 1970s. Moreover, in spite of many campaigns, it remains the case that there is still no world parliament (or government). Even if the idea of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA) was realized immediately, it would probably give greater voice to members of national parliaments, rather than creating space for anything resembling global political parties proper. No global elections are yet in sight. It is reasonable, at least tentatively, to see the current situation in terms of Karl Polanyi’s double movement, although clearly, history does not simply repeat itself. There is no pendulum of history. Moreover, we cannot go back to what Axel Honneth calls the intellectual fictions of the age of the Industrial Revolution, namely that historical progress is necessary and that it will be carried forward by a particular class with fixed interests. [1] While the working-class movement in England and elsewhere emerged from a variety of real socioeconomic conditions, it was actively nurtured by socialists who believed in its world-historical role. The socioeconomic conditions are different in the twenty-first century. For instance, industrial workers form a declining share of the labor force across advanced industrial countries. Changing realities require new ideas. The idea of transformative global agency is purported to make a wide rational appeal across different social classes: “This is what is reasonable for us to do!” As Richard Falk puts it, “The very adversity of circumstances and the severity of global risks is giving rise to a radical populist consciousness.” In addition to these risks, and the acute sense of injustices and asymmetries of power, there must also be a positive direction. David Christian expresses the positive part of the idea eloquently: the challenge is to construct “a new and inspiring vision of where we humans are today, a vision that can inspire optimism and ambition about the planetary task of building a sustainable future.” Indeed, this is the main aim of my call for a WPP. The making of a collective agency is a process of active and reflexive engagement among the world’s people. The nineteenth-century socialists, believing in their world-historical role, established trade unions, various associations and societies, and labor and socialist parties. The making of a working class shaped the development of industrial capitalism, and also, together with the twentieth-century catastrophes, led to the establishment of dictatorial and often violent single-party socialist regimes across the world. We need to learn from these historical experiences, both the negative and positive lessons they have to offer. We must avoid again being mired in the intellectual fictions of the age of the Industrial Revolution and must acknowledge the diversity of elements that fed into the process of forming the nineteenth-century working class. The majority of these associations, unions, and parties were struggling to democratize society, and often succeeded. Similarly, we can see the emergence of global civil society, along with the possible coalescence of a world political party, as part of a broad process of global transformation. Citizens across the world are disillusioned by national politics. In response to the latest rounds of globalization, many national parties have become post-democratic. Consider the fate of Syriza in Greece, for instance. What happened was not simply an example of Michels’s iron law of oligarchy (which posits that oligarchy is the inevitable fate of all complex organizations). More importantly, the debacle of the summer of 2015 illustrated the power of creditors over debtors in the world economy and the lack of equitable rule of law in worldwide financial relations. During past decades, a large number of countries in the Global South went through similar experiences, instigating the emergence of global debt campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s. Civil society is about associational life and public space. Since Hegel introduced the term into the modern discourse, several different conceptions of civil society have emerged, reflecting different ethical and political aims of public associations. Table 1 summarizes four of conceptions, each of which expresses particular historical discussions and developments. Variations 2 through 4 all contain ideas important for emancipation and increasing social freedom. It is, of course, true that many contemporary civil society organizations are financially dependent on the powers that be, and even those that are not, tend to focus on one or two limited issues. This does not negate the idea that civil society organizations can do important work and foster ideas of global justice and democracy. Moreover, in a good society, the freedom of association must prevail. As Roy Bhaskar puts it, despite the very real weaknesses of civil society, its social virtues remains “a domain of innovation, initiative and enterprise necessary to a dynamic, pluralistic socialist society.” [2] Table 1: Approaches to civil society (www.tinyurl.com/yym2moqw) Broadly, a political party is best seen as an instance of public association. A typical national political party is an association that has achieved the right to nominate candidates in elections and thereby contest and claim the political power of the state. A party has to have a wide program covering multiple complex issues, for its aim is to take part in making laws and budgetary decisions. As commenters point out, a world political party could not claim that role in a world state, simply because no such state exists. But the party itself would constitute a public sphere, and the existing international regimes, or systems of regional and global governance, would provide sites for a public sphere and political actions. The raison d’être of the world party must lie in furthering transformations and various new institutional forms in which the planetary public realm can be organized. For this purpose, consensus opinions among participants will be forged into a program of change, which can also involve direct or indirect participation in elections in different countries and organizations. We can distinguish between three moments of transformative global democratic action: MOMENT 1: Activities within the confines of established institutions. MOMENT 2: Advocacy to transform global institutions and create new ones. MOMENT 3: Participation in the newly formed global institutions. These three moments form a logical order: activities within existing institutions can include advocacy of, and legislation for, global democratic institutions. A grouping of like-minded countries, supported by global civil society and WPPs, can suffice for establishing a new global system of governance. These systems can be functional and yet democratic. Successful attempts at creating institutions of planetary democracy make participation in them possible. Over time, new institutions will become established, and the cycle can continue from MOMENT 1 to MOMENT 2 to MOMENT 3. Each step in the process changes the constellation of forces in global politics and the ways the WPP strategy adapts. There is no end to history; and not all new institutions will have to be planetary in scope. Global institutions can, and in many cases should, increase the contextually overlapping, multi-layered autonomy and social freedom of actors, learning from experiences in an experimental spirit. Since the 1990s, I have been involved in developing and advocating several specific global utopias (or eutopias as I prefer to call them), from a debt arbitration mechanism and global taxes (including a global greenhouse gas tax) to a twenty-first-century version of Keynes’s clearing union. I particularly favor building support for workers’ rights and trade unionization on a planetary scale, both out of solidarity and to increase global aggregate demand. Another key idea is to regulate and maintain aggregate efficient demand on a global scale, which presupposes the coordinated institutionalization of economic policies between nation-states and functional international organizations, coordinated for example through a world parliament. These reforms would be critically important as well for global peace and security, since root causes of conflicts and securitization tend to lie in the sphere of political economy. We need to build a more cooperative and equitable world. The rational tendency of world history is toward green global Keynesianism, which would enable us to achieve democratic control over the mechanisms and processes of the capitalist world economy. Nonetheless, how well any of the proposed institutional arrangements will work is contingent. There are also deeper aims, such as furthering human emancipation and the development of all on the thin layer of life on our fragile planet, all in the wider context of cosmic evolution. This generic aim should, in my view, constitute the key idea of a democratic socialist world party, thereby encouraging a diversity of emancipatory projects across scales from local to cosmic, focusing for instance on the idea of commons. It would be premature to write a detailed program for a WPP before the process leading to its creation has begun; at this point, we can only outline a broad direction. And, to reiterate, there will be many WPPs. Let me conclude this response by outlining three scenarios about the future role of WPPs in global politics: A) A world political party—or a number of them—forms in the near future, proving decisively important in future transformations. B) Transformations emerge mainly from within the existing structures of power (global “gorbachevs” rise in response to crises, resonating with wider societal developments and new ideas); new democratic systems of global governance precipitate the formation of WPPs that assume important functions. C) Current developments lead to a global military and/or ecological catastrophe; a world party assumes leadership and establishes a democratic world state (this is the well-known scenario of W. Warren Wagar in his A Short History of Future); soon, the world party is then challenged by other world political parties, carrying the project of emancipation further, perhaps into new and hitherto unimagined directions. My general anticipation is that WPPs will be in the center stage of future world politics, regardless of which scenario comes to pass. The current system is not sustainable economically, politically, militarily, or ecologically. Of course, I favor Scenario 1. To avoid a catastrophe, or an elite-led development, the time to establish a democratic world political party is indeed now! Reflexively, the democratic socialist world party would recognize a widespread tendency towards post-democratic forms of governance. These oligarchic tendencies would have to be countered by cultivating the republican virtues and courageous participation of its constantly shifting groups of activist members. This is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for ensuring democratic responsiveness and learning. A WPP will be a continuing historical experiment. Heikki Patomäki [1] Axel Honneth, The Idea of Socialism: Toward a Renewal (New York: Wiley, 2016). [2] Roy Dialectic, The Pulse of Freedom (New York: Routledge, 2008), 235. ******************************** ******************************* Thursday, January 3, 2019 >From Paul Raskin <praskin(a)tellus.org> ----- Dear GTN, Our 2018 forums have spotlighted key movement streams (with more in the queue for 2019). We have generated a remarkable compendium of essays and commentary that stands as a unique resource for understanding the vitality and diversity of progressive forces now at play. Significantly, the series affirms the fundamental GT premise that different oppositional paths can lead to a shared conviction: we must urgently act collectively for global transformation.* Yet, the nagging sense persists that the current array of movements remains too fragmented and weak for the task of systemic change. The political culture still lacks an overarching global organizing framework for nurturing synergy, mobilizing the discontented, and spreading new social visions – not to mention serving ultimately as an instrument for attaining public power. What might such a framework look like? The question brings me to our January discussion. Heikki Patomäki offers an answer in his new essay, “A World Political Party: The Time Has Come.” Heikki envisions a World Political Party (WPP) as a transnational association dedicated to democratic principles and processes that, under an umbrella of shared principles and aims, spawns a vast network of semiautonomous nodes at all levels. While noting the high hurdles to establishing a WPP, Heikki points to the deepening world crisis that compels the attempt and makes success plausible; indeed, he believes an important precursor has already been launched. What do you think? Please read the essay at www.greattransition.org/publication/world-political-party, and let us know. Does the idea of a WPP resonate? How would you modify Heikki’s conception? To those of you pursuing other approaches to fostering movement coherence, this would be a terrific time to tell us about them. Since we’re starting late, the discussion will go through Monday, February 4. It is now almost 2 years since I've left on a field research to Ecuador, the only place in the world *Voice of Nature - The Trial* coming soon in Ghent! It is now almost 2 years since I’ve left on a field research to Ecuador, the only place in the world that acknowledges the rights of nature in the constitution. It has been a long artistic research, mostly focused on possible legal frameworks that allow either to represent non-humans in court or to recognize ecocide. Non of those are being applied yet or envisioned in a near future. *The result of this research is a performance!* We will premiere on the 1st of march in Vooruitkunstcentrum, and we are thankful to present in the context of the festival ‘same same but different’. As a location, we chose the Court of Appeal of Gent (Hof van Beroep), as a statement of activation. As a response to the many legal challenges we face in representing non-humans in a courtroom, more then a year ago, I started my quest to become a guardian of nature. For that, I’ve dedicated daily attention, to perform rituals and embodiments with non-human others. As a result I’ve archived these exercises in a book. The performance in itself will be a proposal for justice, the kind of justice nature needs, imagining a universe of kinship and rites as an embodiment of non-humans. We will propose collective rituals featuring the unknown and the unconscious part of nature in us. History is asking us to become healers, warriors, guardians, keepers, defenders. To speak on behalf of future and past generations. To amplify the voice of nature, animals, plants, rivers, land... We have harmed enough, we have been harmed enough. Enough is enough. Let us stop harming, let us make amends, let us repair the irreparable. We invited him to imagine ‘an ideal world’, juridically speaking, by proposing a number of important legal alterations to the existing legal framework. Apart from that, there was a sense of emergency to involve law students in the creation of this piece. *As an outcome, the concept of ‘ecocide’ was explicitly for the first time included in the curriculum of law students at Ghent University*. Students are now working on papers concerning ecocide law, rights of nature and indigenous rights. For, if the new generation of lawyers is not fully aware of it, how can we realistically hope for the concept of ecocide to be included into the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court? As a proposal, the piece is looking at restorative justice and therefore we collaborated with Brunilda Pali from the Institute of Criminology Leuven, to discover artistically speaking how to *use restorative justice in order to prevent environmental crimes*,* but also to tackle the fact that if we need to prevent the harm*,* there should be a way to restore ourselves as humans*. In restorative justice, crime is not seen as a break in the law but a violation/harm of people and relationships. It creates obligations to make things right. Its processes are always voluntary, participatory and involve everyone affected. The outcomes are reconciliation, restoration, and reassurance that the harm will not happen again.
