Fwd: [bgcon] "Global South Atlantic"
by Michel Bauwens 11 Feb '19

11 Feb '19

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Krystian Woznicki <kw(a)berlinergazette.de> Date: Mon, Feb 11, 2019 at 11:47 AM Subject: [bgcon] "Global South Atlantic" To: <digi-yards(a)berlinergazette.de> Hi, the 'ever less' logics of austerity and right-wing populism are shrinking access to the world – be it at the level of existential resources, social connections or discoursive space. The MORE WORLD initiative intends to counter this trend. In an interview I conducted with the postcolonial scholar Kerry Bystrom argues against 'world shrinkage' by turning to the silenced realities of the South Atlantic. The South Atlantic can be seen as a hidden link between Africa and Latin America. As such it has enabled stories, people and goods to travel in the shadows of globalization. Engendering a different narrative of this epochal process, these ghosts of global geo-culture are cast in a silence that we are challenged to become attuned to. Based on the book “The Global South Atlantic”, edited by Kerry Bystrom and Joseph R. Slaughter, the following interview shows that the silence bundles political energies and imaginaries that can open more access to the world as it is and as it could be. The interview has been published on Mediapart.fr. He was a friend, colleague and mentor to us for many years, who blessed us with extraordinary insights and invaluable inspiration. Not only has the world now lost the person with the most far-reaching knowledge about money, but also a head and heart that knew how to design monetary systems for the benefit of people. He was out to change the world of money for the better. He knew that money is such a powerful instrument that determines not only our economies but also our thinking. His enthusiasm for the topic never faltered because "if there is a single instrument, that can be brought to bear on all issues that we need to address to save mankind, it would be the money system." Fundamental terms like "complementary currency" and "monetary ecosystem" are attributed to him and he kept saying: "Name a problem and I will design a complementary currency to help you solve it." Margrit Kennedy wrote to her friend and co-author of many years: "Your creativity, your inexhaustible ideas on how to design, invent and transform money, simply leave me in awe." Both of them were convinced, that diversity in currency systems would be far superior for the benefit of people, the economy and the planet than our singular money system, in which banks create money by giving loans. He suffered seeing how his ideas failed to be systematically implemented in policy: Despite the many thousand local complementary currencies that were launched in the past decades, he never received substantial recognition within the conventional financial system. "I have lost my illusion that having the solution is what matters. It's absolutely irrelevant." he remarked to us in one of his last comprehensive video-interviews (2016) <https://monneta.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5946820fbb88dd524bd7cc54…>. And it pained him deeply that Greece never got the chance to issue a national parallel currency. He was convinced, that the Greek people would have been much better off, if they had their own second currency - much like Britain has with the Pound - to be used alongside the Euro. Bernard Lietaer was a great thinker with an unusual bright intellect, enriching the lives of so many people. For us he stands in the line of economist like S. Gesell, J.M. Keynes or N. Georgescu-Roegen. Isaac Newton is quoted saying that we are all standing on the shoulders of giants and hence can look further into the future. On the 7th of February Bernard would have celebrated his 77th birthday. We will always love him and are now standing on his shoulders, to continue his work and built a better world. Introducing... Good Data - Institute of Network Cultures Theory on Demand #29 now available
by Angela Daly 06 Feb '19

06 Feb '19

We are delighted to announce the publication of Good Data, #29 in the Institute of Network Cultures Theory on Demand series. This open access book, edited by Angela Daly, S Kate Devitt and Monique Mann, contains 20 chapters from an international interdisciplinary group of authors, starting the conversation on what Good Data is and how we can progress towards a pragmatic Good Data future. These 20 chapters paint a more positive picture of what our digital lives and practices are and could be. We don’t have to accept the Bad Data dystopia we are currently in, or give up our digital tech entirely and retreat to Neo-Luddism. Another digitised world is possible (and necessary), and Good Data shows us a glimpse of what and how it could be. The book can be found here for free download (in various formats): http://networkcultures.org/blog/publication/tod-29-good-data/ The Institute of Network Cultures has published a series of blogposts from Good Data authors summarising their Good Data interventions, which can be found here: http://networkcultures.org/blog/ The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Malia Politzer <malia.politzer(a)piqd.com> Date: Sat, Jan 26, 2019 at 1:59 PM Subject: 5 Podcasts That Have Mastered The Art Of Storytelling To: <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> Dear listeners, What is the vital ingredient that separates an amazing podcast from a mediocre one, that magic quality that first draws listeners in, and makes them want to tune in again and again? For me, the answer is simple: A great story. While that sounds simple, delivering a good story isn’t so easy: It requires a captivating narrative, great voice, and the ability to unveil the plot in a compelling way. While there are tons of podcasts out there, not many have mastered the art of storytelling. In this week’s newsletter, we’ve picked five podcasts that are guaranteed to draw you in and keep you hooked. Be warned: Once you start, you probably won’t be able to stop listening. Bodies <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> This 6-episode feminist podcast, which debuted last year, showcases storytelling at its finest. Each episode unravels a medical mystery—one featuring a woman’s pain, which at first isn’t taken seriously by the medical establishment. Each episode is vulnerable, deeply personal, and riveting. Be prepared to binge. Mogul <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Mogul follows the rise and fall of Chris Lightly, the manager of some of the most well-known names in hip hop—such as Missy Elliot, LL Gool J, and others—whose life was cut tragically short by suicide in 2012. The series does an excellent job of revealing the real person behind the legend, and gives great insight into how mental illness and success often go hand-in-hand. Believed <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> This six-episode investigation explores how Larry Nassar, the famous and once well-respected doctor who treated the American Olympic women’s gymnastics team, got away with sexually abusing hundreds of women and young girls for years. Each episode is deeply compelling in its own right—but what sets the series apart is the attention and respect it gives to the voices of his victims, and how their bravery and persistence eventually led to Nassar's downfall. This Is Love <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> This delightful podcast explores the journey and experience of love in all its forms—from the challenge of finding “the one”, to heartbreak, to what it really means to love. Hosted by award-winning *Criminal *producer Phoebe Judge, it will entertain and charm you. Dr. Death <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> This series is an in-depth investigation into the medical malpractice of one Dallas-based neurosurgeon, Dr. Christopher Duntsch. The podcast unfolds like a mystery thriller, as it exposes the horrendous damage Dr. Duntsch inflicted on his patience, and the incompetence of the institutions that allowed him to hurt people again and again. *Piqs Of The Week* - Alone Is Not All Bad: Looking At Solitude Through A Historic Lens <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> (BackStory) - When Do We “Impeach the Motherf*”? <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> (Deconstructed) - Why Are Flags Taken So Seriously? <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> (The Foreign Desk) - Is Your Postman Delivering Drugs?
