A Global New Deal For The Commons:
by Michel Bauwens 02 Dec '19

02 Dec '19

HERE IS JOSEPH CEDERWALL'S PROPOSAL: A Global New Deal For The Commons: https://thedig.nz/editorial/hope-for-nature-a-new-deal-for-the-commons/? I propose that what humanity and the planet desperately needs is a Global New Deal For The Commons. Such a deal would require a global mobilisation to ensure that the natural and cultural commons are protected and sustainable biodiversity-friendly and cooperatist land-use is adopted. If structured right, such a deal would have a massive impact towards restoring the planetary ecosystem and biodiversity, as well as healing deprived and hopeless communities everywhere in the process. To truly turn the biodiversity and climate crises around, this new deal needs to happen at least on a scale of wartime efforts such as the Marshall Plan of WWII or the New Deal of the Depression-era. As Rutger Bregman argues, centralised state action will be essential to any realistic efforts to drive an environmental effort on the scale required. However, I am less cynical than Bregman about the power of bottom-up efforts, and believe a properly balanced combination of the two is essential. A biodiversity-focused investment on this scale could combine central investment with an approach focused on catalysing, fostering, and scaling bottom-up land-use initiatives and ideas. It could prioritise local communities as workforces and support the emergence of ground-up, decentralised solutions and initiatives over centrally imposed or market-based solutions wherever possible. Such a new deal for the commons would require associated work on reforming land tenure and local democratic and economic institutions on a scale not attempted since the communist project. However, rather than the top-down command and control approach of communism, it would provide a framework, resources and tools for communities to re-learn how to live harmoniously with each other and with nature’s abundance. This approach could spread knowledge, technology and best practice for environmental restoration globally through open sourcing IP and implementing solidarity networks or networks of mutual aid across society. This new deal would also require real action on the national and global level to reform global governance and regulation and build a more just international order and institutions. This would require new agreements such as an international law of “ecocide,” and strengthened international environmental laws and enforcement mechanisms to ensure the compliance of corporations and rogue imperialist nations. This new order would also need to address debt-enslavement, eternal growth imperatives, and rebalance global wealth disparity to stop wealthy nations from shifting the impacts of growth onto vulnerable populations and ecosystems. However, crucially, to bring about this new order, we must find ways to continue challenging the narrow confines of permitted thought and debate keeping us locked in the destructive dominion paradigm. It would need to restore the rule of law and ensure the protection of whistleblowers, journalists, activists and politicians challenging this narrative. If not, who will hold power accountable for their inaction or blocking of real progress? Who will continue to tell the stories and defend the rights of those on the margins building the alternative futures discussed above?" -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Open Food Network Australia <hello(a)openfoodnetwork.org.au> Date: Thu, Nov 7, 2019 at 8:23 AM Subject: What makes community food enterprises thrive? Our latest report is out! To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Community food enterprise report, Grant help, Building the Commons, Local food to buy, and more. View this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/9a21c5d9a1d6/what-makes-community-food-enterprises-thriv…> Hi there! This month has felt like an intense knowledge exchange month for Open Food Network - we've been out listening and talking about food systems at all sorts of events. Ranging from the Planning Institute's annual conference (where we spoke about food system planning) to the GrAiNZ Conference (where we heard about A LOT of exciting ideas), to the ORICoop AGM (where we spoke about our international work) and more - read on for reflections from some of these events. We've also been busy finalising research reports, with the first released right now, in this very newsletter! *Community Food Enterprises report released* <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> We're excited to share our latest report with you: *Community Food Enterprises - Their role in food system change, opportunities, challenges and support needs* <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> . It brings together our lessons from running food system activation and community food enterprise incubator programs for the last five years. We've identified common challenges facing community food enterprises in Australia, plus five critical success factors. We've also highlighted what enterprises, government, and philanthropy can do to create thriving community food enterprises. This report is for anyone running a community food enterprise, and any agency that wants to see a vibrant regional food economy in their area. *Download the report <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…>* *Building regional food systems* We're working on two exciting regional food systems development projects at the moment, one in Seymour, and the other in North-East Victoria. Each project culminates in an event next year, but first involves a regional consultation. In Seymour, we're interviewing as many farmers and food distributors as possible to help uncover regional strengths and opportunities. In the North-East we're collaborating with Landcare to run a number of workshops leading up to the main event. If you're producing or distributing food in either of those regions, we'd love to have you included. We'll share details of the North-East workshops on social media and in this newsletter. And if you're in the Seymour region, please fill in this form <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> so we can get in touch. These projects receive funding from the Australian Government's Building Better Regions Fund. *Grants in Victoria - we can help* <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> The Victorian Government has released new grants for ‘small scale and craft’ agricultural businesses. (These are the latest version of the ‘Artisanal Agriculture’ grants.) We know how flat out you are, so we’ve summarised the key information for you, and outlined some ways we might be able to help you with them. Find out more. <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> *Building peer-to-peer alternatives* In the last year, we’ve been realising that *how* we work at the Open Food Network is in fact one of the most important things that we’re creating, as we go about the task of building a better food system. Recent discussions with other thinkers in this space at a Global Commons Forum in Korea affirmed this idea, and gave us new ideas to ponder as we continue forward. Read some of our reflections <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> from the forum on the value of building community for the commons. *Find local food to buy* Every week there are new shops on the Open Food Network. Rereading Marx in the Age of Digital Capitalism
by Christian Fuchs 28 Oct '19

28 Oct '19

Fuchs, Christian. 2019. Rereading Marx in the Age of Digital Capitalism. London: Pluto Press. Introduction: http://fuchs.uti.at/books/rereading-marx-in-the-age-of-digital-capitalism/ Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32YXLWXaHMY&feature=youtu.be "Fuchs rereads Marx in the present, in that tangle of explosive contradictions, indicating with clarity and force the necessary path of theoretical militancy today" – Antonio Negri, author of “Political Descartes: Reason, Ideology and the Bourgeois Project” “Christian Fuchs is the world’s foremost Marxist analyst of contemporary capitalist media" - Jodi Dean, author of “The Communist Horizon” The ‘end of history’ has not taken place. Ideological andeconomic crisis and the status quo of neoliberal capitalism since 2008 demand a renewed engagement with Marx. But if we are to effectively resist capitalism we must truly understand Marx: Marxism today must theorise how communication technologies, media representation and digitalisation have come to define contemporary capitalism. There is an urgent need for critical, Marxian-inspired knowledge as a foundation for changing the world and the way we communicate from digital capitalism towards communicative socialism and digital communism. "Rereading Marx in the Age of Digital Capitalism" does exactly this. Delving into Marx’s most influential works, such as Capital, The Grundrisse, Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts, The German Ideology and The Communist Manifesto, Christian Fuchs draws out Marx’s concepts of machinery, technology, communication and ideology, all of which anticipate major themes of the digital age. A concise and coherent work of Marxist media and communication theory, the book ultimately demonstrates the relevance of Marx to an age of digital and communicative capitalism. Table of Contents 1. Introduction: Rereading Marx in the Age of Digital Capitalism 2. Rereading Marx’s ‘Capital’ in the Information Age 3. Rereading Marx as Critical Sociologist of Technology 4. Rereading Marx as Critical Theorist of Communication 5. Rereading Marx in the Age of Digital Capitalism: The Case of Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet as the Digital German Ideology 6. Rereading Marx in the Age of Digital Capitalism: Reflections on Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri’s Book ‘Assembly’ 7. Conclusion

Fwd: Farewell to the WSF? (GTN Discussions)
by Michel Bauwens 24 Oct '19

24 Oct '19

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Great Transition Network <gtnetwork(a)greattransition.org> Date: Wed, Oct 23, 2019 at 11:36 PM Subject: Farewell to the WSF? (GTN Discussions) To: <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> >From Roberto Savio [utopia(a)robertosavio.info] ---------------------------------------------------------- IS THERE A FUTURE FOR THE WORLD SOCIAL FORUM? A response to the discussion from Roberto Savio In the insightful comments in this month’s discussion, there was broad agreement about the importance and impact of the World Social Forum. The WSF opened a utopian laboratory (to quote Thomas Ponniah), and the impact was felt worldwide. But this was never under contention. That hundreds of thousands of people paid travel fares and participation fees to take part in a meeting where they shared their hopes and dreams was unprecedented—and was beyond what we had envisioned in the early planning meetings. When it comes to the reasons for the decline of the WSF, that unanimity falls apart. Some point to the internal tensions, political bickering, and lack of inclusive democracy; others to the tension between social movements and NGOs. Others point to cultural conflicts (e.g., between the Anglo world and the Latin world), the decentralization of having a multiplicity of workshops, often on the same subject, like in a fair; or the difficulties that travel and costs posed for less-funded organizations. What is impressive is that all points are legitimate. But where there is again unanimity is on the International Council, which is clearly considered not up to the task for the consolidation and growth of the movement. The original Organizing Committee saw the IC’s role as facilitating, rather than steering. Perhaps for this reason, the IC was not structured as a real place for debate (interventions were rarely allowed to be more than three minutes). And the IC never hired someone like a rapporteur, who could record decisions to be passed on to the following IC or those who were not on the IC at all. We must also remember that at every IC meeting, the majority of participants were new. So each meeting ended up starting with discussions on points on which there was already a consensus. But every attempt to give more structure to the IC was rebuffed by those who saw organization as synonymous with bureaucratization. As Francine Mestrum notes, “Horizontalism and the fear of hierarchies are very justified. But those should not make accountability impossible.” Such accountability depends on communication. No transmission was done from one forum to the following one. The panels repeated themselves and each other at every forum, without any input from ones prior. And as forums were held in different locations, participants were often completely different. I was involved in the Communication Commission from the start. We were just a small group, and in the IC, information technology was considered a job restricted to professionals. The difference between information and communication was not clear. I remember that in an IC meeting in Mexico, we asked every member of the IC to provide us with ten names of journalists in their country so that we could organize a WSF information network. Only four did so! In my personal view, one of the main causes of the decline of the WSF is that it became an endogamic movement, not one accountable to the outside. Rita Freire touches on this point, and Sally Burch proposes an Internet WSF, using the modern technology for sharing and inclusion. It is true that when the Forum started, social media and the Internet did not have the reach they do today. But my point is that if we opened a process of communication and participation, the WSF could have kept its function as a utopian laboratory, while enabling many new organizations and activist to join the process. Not many had the financial resources to travel to a forum, and communication would have kept them in the loop. But communication is a culture, not the use of technical means. And I am afraid that this culture was sorely missing in the IC. In their comments, everybody, in one way or another, points to the need for the survival of the WSF to bring together the new movements that the success of globalization has created. But, in the present formula, all of those movements have to come physically to the Forum to do so. That makes the WSF increasingly obsolete. Linking political actors means much more than just a few conversations. The WSF needs to be able to distribute papers with proposal for action. Without this, how can we work with others? By asking them to join the IC? This would be a sure-fire way to bore people with bureaucratization, as intellectual and important organizations have often done. The IC must be reduced in size, have real and transparent rules, and accept its role as a steering body, responsible for the contents of the Forum, and for its connection to the world of institutions, organizations, and militants worldwide. Many commenters referenced how drastically the world has changed since 2000. Globalization has lost credibility and is defended only by the defenders of the status quo. Nobody today defends the idea that the “rising tide” of the market will lift all boats. The anxiety of those left out has fostered the rise of the likes of Trump, Orban, Bolsonaro, etc. In 2017, the 500 richest people on the planet became, collectively, $1 trillion richer than in the year before. In four years, they will have increased their wealth, with an amount equivalent to the budget of the United States. This is clearly unsustainable. Our world comes from a string of events, all based on greed, a main engine of history. First, the fall of Berlin Wall was seen as the end of history, as capitalism would now unify the world. The Washington Consensus offered a manifesto and a blueprint: everything that did not create profits was a waste. Ideologies were abandoned for pragmatism, which was itself an ideology. Conservative heads of state like US president Ronald Reagan and UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher had been working against multilateralism, social justice, and solidarity since the early 80s; the leaders of social democratic parties, like UK Labour’s Tony Blair, furthered that legacy. Blair’s Third Way replaced social democracy’s ambitions with resignation: as nobody can stop globalization, let us work to give it a human face. Then came the financial crisis of 2008, which ushered in twenty years of fear after twenty years of greed. Before that crisis, only France had a right wing, xenophobic, and nationalist party. Such parties blossomed across the US and Europe, with the exception of Portugal. The aftermath of war in Iraq, Syria, and Libya has created a migration crisis, and in the immigrants fleeing the destruction of their countries, xenophobic forces found their scapegoat. During all this time, the WSF followed a clearly insufficient formula. Let us meet, let us discuss, let us share, in self-referential meetings, with no relation with the political process, and without any practice of communication. Its participants were, by large majority, taking part in those political debates. But when in the WSF, they had to abstain from any political activity. It was very much like a church event: one met with like-minded people, shared experiences and hopes, to act on upon returning to their normal life. But in their normal life, they found plenty of actors engaged in action. And as the reactions to greed and fear, then social injustice, then climate change, were creating new meeting points, the WSF become an antiquated, outdated formula, which required money to participate, because it required your physical presence, in meetings for discussion, and no place for action. Try to bring Greta Thunberg to this dimension. I am convinced that unless we take radical steps toward updating the WSF, with space or mechanisms for interacting with the outside world, and some space or mechanism for some level of political action, the WSF will continue to dwindle and eventually die. The Talmudists of the WSF will say no, that to do so means possible divisions in the WSF, reducing its plurality and unity. But the present trend is ominous. A new formula can be found, and I think the contributions to this debate are a clear proof that there is enough knowledge, vision, and experience to be able to do so. We will know, in this fractured and splintered world, quite soon what is the future of the WSF. In a world without values, its new identity could be to bring back a debate on the values, which have kept wars and conflicts away. Peace, social justice, solidarity, transparency, participation, etc. The values that neoliberal globalization has eliminated, which are found in the constitutions of so many countries, would be today a powerful bridge. The WSF, as a holistic organization, could engage in a such debate, with all those that reject the results of this self-destructing capitalism, with its set of values coming from greed and fear. ---------------------------------------------------------- Hit reply to post a comment on the GT Network Read all comments (or reply) here <https://greattransition.org/gtn-discussions/farewell-to-the-wsf#3052> Note: Expect a delay between posting and receiving your comment Need help? ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: The Democracy Collaborative <press(a)democracycollaborative.org> Date: Wed, Oct 23, 2019 at 5:05 PM Subject: Advancing a democratic economy, from healthcare anchors to energy utilities To: <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> News and Updates from The Democracy Collaborative Dear Colleague, Earlier this month, *The New York Times * <https://community-wealth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e51d2c7d40bc9992…>featured an article <https://community-wealth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e51d2c7d40bc9992…> about the work of The Democracy Collaborative’s Healthcare Anchor Network <https://community-wealth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e51d2c7d40bc9992…> (HAN), highlighting how this growing collaboration of 45 health systems is shifting the healthcare field to invest in addressing one of the root causes of poor health: economic insecurity. The article features quotes from myself and Director of Healthcare Engagement David Zuckerman, as well as leading voices in the field and local residents at the heart of these anchor strategies. The work of HAN was also recently featured by Grantmakers in Health <https://community-wealth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e51d2c7d40bc9992…> and in an op-ed in *OtherWords* <https://community-wealth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e51d2c7d40bc9992…>. Later this winter, HAN will be collaborating on *Modern Healthcare’s *Social Determinants of Health Symposium <https://community-wealth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e51d2c7d40bc9992…>, which brings together many of those working on drawing the connections between systemic inequity and health outcomes. The symposium will take place on December 3rd in Detroit, Michigan. Learn more about the symposium agenda and speakers <https://community-wealth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e51d2c7d40bc9992…>, and register here <https://community-wealth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e51d2c7d40bc9992…> . I am pleased to announce two new TDC fellows: Dominic T. Moulden <https://community-wealth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e51d2c7d40bc9992…> joins as a Senior Fellow for Community Organizing & the Democratic Economy in the African and Latinx Diaspora <https://community-wealth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e51d2c7d40bc9992…>. Dominic, who brings a deep history of community organizing in Washington, DC, will help to map the existing landscape of community organizing groups and enterprise developers who are advancing the movement for a democratic economy. This information will help to inform us on how best to support the growth of a democratic economy from the perspective of the grassroots. Dr. Obery Hendricks joins as a Senior Fellow for Faith, Power, and the Democratic Economy <https://community-wealth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e51d2c7d40bc9992…>, and will advance our work around engaging faith leaders, and outlining the role that religion, faith, and theology can play in shifting the public’s moral imagination about the political economy. In September, The Democracy Collaborative co-sponsored this year’s The World Transformed festival, which occurs alongside the UK Labour Party’s annual conference. Among the panels TDC helped support were several on community wealth building as well as a panel on municipalism featuring Kali Akuno, Debbie Bookchin, Frans Bieckmann, Elif Sarican, and Osman Baydemir. We also co-hosted an event with local Councillors and others interested in community wealth building, which included Shadow Secretary of State for Local Government and Communities Andrew Gwynne, North of Tyne Mayor Jamie Driscoll, Islington Cabinet Member Asima Shaikh, Preston City Council Leader Matthew Brown, and Sarah McKinley, TDC’s Director of European Programs. During their conference, the Labour Party announced a number of exciting new policies, many related to TDC’s work on democratizing ownership and control. Christian Fuchs - new book: Nationalism on the Internet: Critical Theory and Ideology in the Age of Social Media and Fake News
by Christian Fuchs 21 Oct '19

21 Oct '19

Christian Fuchs. 2020. Nationalism on the Internet: Critical Theory and Ideology in the Age of Social Media and Fake News. New York: Routledge. http://fuchs.uti.at/books/nationalism-on-the-internet/ (including reading sample/introduction) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y25je5XtUcQ In this timely book, critical theorist Christian Fuchs asks: What is nationalism and what is the role of social media in the communication of nationalist ideology? Advancing an applied Marxist theory of nationalism, Fuchs explores nationalist discourse in the world of contemporary digital capitalism that is shaped by social media, big data, fake news, targeted advertising, bots, algorithmic politics, and a high-speed online attention economy. The book develops a critical theory of nationalism that is grounded in the works of Karl Marx, Rosa Luxemburg, and Eric J. Hobsbawm.
