Il traite des interactions entre communs numériques et capitalisme numérique. (2020) *Incorporating the Digital Commons: Corporate Involvement in Free and Open Source Software*. The concept of ‘the commons’ has been used as a framework to understand resources shared by a community rather than a private entity, and it has also inspired social movements working against the enclosure of public goods and resources. One such resource is free (libre) and open source software (FLOSS). FLOSS emerged as an alternative to proprietary software in the 1980s. However, both the products and production processes of FLOSS have become incorporated into capitalist production. For example, Red Hat, Inc. is a large publicly traded company whose business model relies entirely on free software, and IBM, Intel, Cisco, Samsung, Google are some of the largest contributors to Linux, the open-source operating system. This book explores the ways in which FLOSS has been incorporated into digital capitalism. Just as the commons have been used as a motivational frame for radical social movements, it has also served the interests of free-marketeers, corporate libertarians, and states to expand their reach by dragging the shared resources of social life onto digital platforms so they can be integrated into the global capitalist system. The book concludes by asserting the need for a critical political economic understanding of the commons that foregrounds (digital) labour, class struggle, and uneven power distribution within the digital commons as well as between FLOSS communities and their corporate sponsors.

Fwd: [bgcon] "Algotaylorism"

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Krystian Woznicki <kw(a)berlinergazette.de> Date: Mon, Feb 24, 2020 at 10:45 AM Subject: [bgcon] "Algotaylorism" To: <digi-yards(a)berlinergazette.de> Hi, writer and curator Aude Launay – who has been member of the bgcon network and participants in Berliner Gazette conferences for some years now – has curated an exhibition and an accompanying series of talks about the future of work in what she calls "a growing algorithmic Taylorism". The title is ALGOTAYLORISM and it takes place at La Kunsthalle, Mulhouse (F), Feb.13 _ April 26 2020. And there is more to come. The teaser reads as follows: “In the past the man has been first ; in the future the system must be first.” wrote Frederick W. Taylor in The Principles of Scientific Management in 1911. From his scientific management of work to Amazon/Uber/Deliveroo’s algorithmic management, the evolution has mainly been technological, while on the ideological level, one notices rather a continuity. What is work in the globalized digital age? On the one hand, a growing algorithmic Taylorism—the extreme division of labor among clickworkers—and, on the other hand, a persistent machinic illusion—many tasks thought to be performed by computers are in fact performed by human beings in a more or less concealed way. In the age of algorithmic management, what about performance measurement and worker optimization tools? Also, in what is now called the “attention economy”, it is not anymore only workers who work: any online activity is likely to add to the capital accumulation of the internet giants through its commodification. All data is monetizable. Every internet user is profitable. Being online = working? F. Schumacher. In the process he captures the forty-year sweep of the work of the Schumacher Center for a New Economics. An excerpt of his article is reprinted below with permission of the publisher. You can read the full article here <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> and, on The Craftsmanship Initiative’s website <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…>, become a follower of the magazine at no fee. On February 3rd the contractors completed their 10 months of work renovating the Schumacher Center’s Library <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> and Offices. <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…>The cleaning crew worked all day on the 4th to make everything sparkle. Then that Thursday it was all hands on deck to move books and archival collections into their new climate controlled environment; unpack dishes and place them on shelves in the new kitchen; wash linens covered in sawdust and set them in order in the two new bathrooms; arrange the librarian’s workspace downstairs; hang paintings; unroll rug, table, and chairs for the video conferencing room; and re-arrange the “big” room upstairs now with more space for convening. Team Schumacher was up to the task, even adding a new flowering jasmine in celebration! Painters and carpenters from left to right: Dan Ferron, Kealan Rooney, Tim Seddon, Steven Seddon Sr., Bob Hartman, Devon Guy All just in time for a group of twenty-two persons arriving from around the country on that Friday for a two-day gathering to discuss the cultural roots of the climate crisis and how philanthropists could best engage in creating solutions. It was a perfect setting for the discussion facilitated by Otto Scharmer and Arthur Zajonc. The conversation moved from inside the library to the walking trails outside and uphill on Jug End Mountain with stunning views across the Berkshire valley. Break out groups found plenty of corners in the stacks of books downstairs, and the office spaces upstairs for one on one conversations. Gathering in the "big" room at the Schumacher Library It is a building meant to serve the next forty years of the Schumacher Center’s work. Our thanks to the many friends of the Center that donated to make Bob Swann’s original vision for the building a reality. Gratefully, Schumacher Center Staff View photos of the renovation on our website <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…>. >From the January 2020 edition of Craftsmanship Quarterly By Bryce Bauer *Located in the undulating hills of the Southern Berkshires, off the charmingly named Jug End Road near Great Barrington, Massachusetts, the Schumacher Center is a living emblem of Schumacherian modesty and elegance. When I arrived there for a visit of several days, to check up on what has become of Schumacher’s ideas in the four decades since his death, Witt, the center’s director, began her answer by touring me through two of the center’s buildings — its library and her own house. Both had been designed and partially built by the center’s co-founder and her late partner Bob Swann, a carpenter who had previously worked on houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. And both displayed the famous architect’s human-scale gracefulness. The grounds feature a large garden, surrounded by an extensive apple orchard. After “Small Is Beautiful” came out, Swann helped organize Schumacher’s 1977 tour of the United States; Schumacher, in turn, asked Swann to help carry out his ideas in America. Originally designed to be the forum for a Schumacher-inspired lecture series, the scope of the organization grew over the years, as did the intellectual spheres from which it drew. Critical among the ideas it subsumed were those of the great urban development theorist, Jane Jacobs, who spoke at the center in 1984. In one of her books, “The Economy of Cities,” Jacobs argued that places develop when they start to produce products locally that they previously imported from far away. Following her speech, Jacobs became a supporter of the center and wrote about its projects in her later books. When I asked Michael Shuman, an economist and consultant who has written several books on local economies, how he viewed the center’s work, he said, “I think the Schumacher center under Susan’s leadership has been the most important laboratory for social invention that serves the local economy in the world.” Shuman credits the center with helping to push forward ideas that have now become mainstream, like crowd funding, and for keeping work on local economies anchored in an intellectual context. Today, the Schumacher Center operates primarily as a library and think-tank, focused on three broad areas: helping communities gain greater control over their land; supporting businesses that provide products and services for local consumption, so that profits stay at home; and fostering face-to-face relationships to offset, or even reverse, the harms of scale that Schumacher identified. Much of this work is focused on the Berkshires, the center’s local proving ground of sorts.* Read the full story here. <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> [image: Facebook] <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> Facebook <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> [image: Instagram] <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> Instagram <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> [image: Twitter] <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> Twitter <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> [image: LinkedIn] <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> LinkedIn <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> [image: Website] <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> Website <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> [image: YouTube] <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> YouTube <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> [image: Email] <schumacher(a)centerforneweconomics.org> Email <schumacher(a)centerforneweconomics.org> [image: Podcast] <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> Podcast <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> You are receiving this email because you are a friend of the Schumacher Center for a New Economics. update your preferences <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/profile?u=69d509d113032e3…> unsubscribe from this list <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/unsubscribe?u=69d509d1130…> *Schumacher Center for a New Economics 140 Jug End Road, Great Barrington, MA 01230 | (413) 528-1737* -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: Gene-Editing Unintentionally Adds Bovine DNA, Goat DNA, and Bacterial DNA, Mouse Researchers Find
by Michel Bauwens 21 Feb '20

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Jonathan Latham <jrlatham(a)bioscienceresource.org> Date: Fri, Feb 21, 2020 at 1:42 PM Subject: Gene-Editing Unintentionally Adds Bovine DNA, Goat DNA, and Bacterial DNA, Mouse Researchers Find To: <BSR-PROJECT-ELIST1(a)gn.apc.org> Dear Friends and Colleagues It has come to light that we have had a mailing list malfunction. The following email messages were never sent to subscribers, so this is a catch-up email with the missing articles. None of them have dated in any appreciable way so please feel free to share them. Indeed we would be very grateful for this. Following this email your mailings will resume as normal. My sincere apologies, most especially to the authors. *In chronological order the articles were:* 1) Published Mon, Sept 23rd, 2019 by* Independent Science News* *Gene-Editing Unintentionally Adds Bovine DNA, Goat DNA, and Bacterial DNA, Mouse Researchers Find* by Jonathan Latham, PhD https://www.independentsciencenews.org/health/gene-editing-unintentionally-… *Synopsis:* Japanese researchers have discovered that standard methods of animal and plant gene-editing introduce DNA from unexpected sources. Inadvertently incorporated into the genomes of their edited mouse cells they found DNA from the *E.coli* genome (a bacterium) and from the cow genome, along with goat DNA. The researchers traced this adventitious presence to contaminants of standard components of the gene-editing process, such as cell culture media. The discovery suggests not only that edited organisms may acquire random foreign DNA, but that present methods of gene-editing can transmit genetic elements, viruses, and other pathogenic agents between species. These findings therefore have very important implications for biosecurity and for the regulation of gene-editing. ***** 2) Published on Mon. Nov 4th by *Independent Science News*: *Interview With Mackenzie Feldman of Herbicide-Free Campus* https://www.independentsciencenews.org/health/interview-with-mackenzie-feld… *Synopsis:* Mackenzie Feldman, youthful Executive Director of Herbicide-Free Campus, has successfully persuaded University of California campuses to end use of the herbicide glyphosate. Her campaign is now spreading to other campuses. How did she do it? ***** 3) Published Thur. Nov 7th, 2019 by *Independent Science News*: *The Battle for the Future of Food in Africa* By Million Belay and Timothy Wise https://www.independentsciencenews.org/environment/the-battle-for-the-futur… *Synopsis:* Policies such as outlawing the saving and sharing of seeds, strongly promoted by the Gates Foundation, are intended to open Africa to multinational seed companies in the name of modernization. But they undermine climate resilience and food security for Africa’s small-scale farmers. *The authors:* Million Belay is the coordinator of the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa. Timothy A. Wise directs the Land and Food Rights Program at the U.S.-based Small Planet Institute and is a Senior Researcher at Tufts University’s Global Development and Environment Institute. This disease in 2019 killed one-fourth of the world’s pigs, including half of all China’s factory farm pigs. So far, mainstream media’s coverage of ASF has skirted questions about the pandemic disease potential of intensive animal agriculture. ****** 5) Published Feb 13th, 2020 by *Independent Science News*: *Extensive Chemical Safety Fraud Uncovered at German Testing Laboratory* by Jonathan Latham https://www.independentsciencenews.org/news/extensive-chemical-safety-fraud… *Synopsis:* The German company LPT Hamburg is prominent in the business of animal testing for the pesticide and pharmaceutical industries. Following an initial investigation by the German magazine FAKT, which featured filming by an undercover employee, five former employees of LPT Hamburg have come forward. The stories told by these employees are of routine fraud intended to show that harmful compounds were, in fact, safe. One of the compounds tested by LPT Hamburg was glyphosate. ****** 6) Published Mon Feb 17th, 2020 by *Independent Science News*: *We Need to Connect the 2019-nCoV Coronavirus to Agriculture* By Rob Wallace, PhD https://www.independentsciencenews.org/health/we-need-to-connect-the-2019-n… *Synopsis: *Did the latest novel coronavirus originate in a wet animal market? wow, what synchronicity, I am very enthusiastic indeed about their vision, which you have yourself beautifully formulated! here a copy of their emails mentioned in the report, if you connect with them, thanks for mentioning my interest for getting in touch as well, see here for the emails: - Lorenza Victoria Salati <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Lorenza_Victoria_Salati> holds a masters degree in Political Sciences (with focus on economic history and visual anthropology) and a specialisation at the School of Cinema and New Media of Milan. She has developed methods derived using visual anthropology as a support to the self-perception of individuals as change makers. Lorenza was formerly a documentary filmmaker and explored agricultural and ethnic issues in Africa (Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Senegal). Since then she has been considering the new communication needs that have arisen from the opportunities offered by the Web 3.0. She has also investigated new forms of expression and innovative methods of storytelling. She has made many documentaries and is the co-author of several books. Lorenza is the co-founder of the Italian firm Osun WES and is the co-owner of a German based company specialising in technological tools to support collaborative projects. She is one of the founders and vice-president of R84 Multifactory Mantova." Email: lorenza(a)osunwes.eu - Giulio Focardi <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Giulio_Focardi> holds a masters degree in Economic History and his main topics of professional and research interest are in the fields of Community Economy, Collaborative Economy and Social Economy. He promotes urban regeneration through the creation of value chains by developing local projects involving micro-enterprises, artisans, artists and cultural managers. He has worked as a consultant, mostly in the HR, strategic development, and multidimensional planning. He has developed various mathematical models of social systems and is the co-author of several books. His working method starts from the systemic analysis of situations, developing intervention models through a trace-back process, starting from the phenomena to reaching to the causes. Since 2009 he has been interested in researching organisational models that contribute to guaranteeing artists economic sustainability and, at the same time, freedom to research and experiment. He is the Co-Founder and CEO of Osun WES, a consulting firm specialising in developing companies as collaborative systems, and is one of the founders and president of the board of R84Association in Mantova."
