the common as a mode of production, a must-read for peers and commoners
by Michel Bauwens 12 Jul '18

see http://www.generation-online.org/c/fc_rent14.htm quotes via Carlo Vercellone <https://www.facebook.com/pages/Carlo-Vercellone/102563563135748?fref=mentio…> "To the temptations of a naturalist approach it is necessary to oppose the theoretical and political need for a materialist approach to the Common, as it alone can, in our view, comprehend the reasons for its current popularity and organise its potential. According to this approach, the Common is always a social and political construct, whether it refers to a mode of organising or a set of criteria to ascribe the status of common goods to a set of resources, goods or services. The ontological foundation, determined historically, of the current position of the Common, cannot be ascribed to the intrinsic nature of goods, but to the ability of labour to self-organise, an ability that in contemporary capitalism relies on the potential autonomy of the cooperation of cognitive labour. For those who approach the Common in the singular, the Common is neither a predetermined set of goods, nor a third intruder between State and the market, but a general principle of organisation for society. As Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri claim (2012), the “common” is not an object, a substance that precedes and transcends human existence; the “common” is a socially and historically determinate activity that continuously produces new institutions, and these are at the same time the conditions and the product of the “common” itself. Compared to economic theories of common goods, this results in a double reversal in theoretical and methodological terms." "It is therefore the very approach of the theory of public and common goods that must be overturned. We must not start from an abstract typology of goods, but from the concrete, historic forms of work that produce the goods themselves. In short, it is the ability of work to cooperate and organise itself differently compared to the logic of private and public that ultimately determines the propensity of a series of goods or resources to be managed according to the principles of the Common. Now, in post-Fordist societies, this growing ability of labour to self-organise depends on the development of a diffused intellectuality and forms of cognitive organisation of labour that break away from the logic of the division of labour typical of industrial capitalism. The social diffusion of knowledge and the re-composition of the work of design and execution form the necessary preconditions for a powerful return of the Common and its ontological foundation on the scene of contemporary capitalism." More precisely, extending the apt definition that Benkler uses for common information goods to all goods, we can assert that production is based on the common when "no one uses exclusive rights to organise effort or capture its value, and when cooperation is achieved through social mechanisms other than price signals or managerial directions" (Benkler 2004, 1110). Fwd: From Rajani: On Alienation: : A Non-Eurocentric View

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: r kanth <involutegandhian(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Jul 11, 2018 at 3:54 AM Subject: Fwd: From Rajani: On Alienation: : A Non-Eurocentric View To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> * Further Notes on Euro-Modernism** * On Alienation* *Alienation* is a major theme in European discourse, both theological and philosophical, in its EM (EuroModernist) phase. Marx , one of the great canonicals in that august lineage*, e.g.,* noted several aspects of alienation: of workers - from their product, from the production process(run by owners/agents) , from each other(via ‘competition’) , and from their own *species essence* *(Gattungswesen*). I wish to identify the last as specially important, if in a marginally different sense, as far as our ‘species-essence’ goes– perhaps – from Marx. I also wish to add another species of alienation, a little less relevant, perhaps, to a child of the enlightenment, and an heir to industrial society, like Marx: *i.e*. *alienation from nature.* *** *Gattungswesen.* I have argued that , *contra *all the norms of EM, we as a species are *affective *beings, led to seek the felicity of warm kindred relations, *instinctually:* familial, co-operative, and communal. EM, by setting up its *alternate * template of competition, acquisitivenessness, individualist, self-seeking behavior (as in the pseudo-science of “Economics”), offers a paradigm strikingly opposed to this human essence. This sets up not so-called ‘cognitive dissonance’ – a buzz-word if ever there was one - but , even deeper, an *existential nightmare* for humans *compelled to act against their very own natures.* *This is the ontic basis of angst and despair, noted by existentialist writers, for generations.* This is why the so-called ‘happiness index’ is so low in all societies *most ‘advanced’ in EM norms*, such as the US; and why the UK, uabashedly, recently set up , no less, a ministry for ‘loneliness’. * *Nature.* We are , *contra *the shibboleths of Biblical ideology, part of nature,* i.e* ., we are *animals* Even the radical Marx, echoing his own Judeo-Christian heritage, spoke of “Man’ proudly as the ‘sovereign of creation”. He hadn’t studied Darwin (Darwin’s classic work was published, late: the same year as one of Marx’s classic works: 1859). *At any rate, we are part of nature*: and when we are kept away from it*, as we are, more or less, in all EM societies,* in arid cityscapes of cement and steel, our ‘spirits sag’ (all but unconsciously) and we experience an ineffable distress (poetically depicted in Keats’ To One Who Has Been Long in City Pent’ verse) . Presumably parks exist , here and there, in cities, to alleviate that disorder. *It is a unique form of alienation* – *i.e.* *suffering* - lifted by that trope of ‘*One Touch of Nature”, as Shakespeare had it, that “ Makes the Whole World Kin" * . It is a misery quite akin to that caused by the rupture with *Gattungswesen.* * To sum up. In my view, we are, as a species, alienated when separated from *family, community, and nature.* Marx, subscribing – as did most all his peers in political economy - - to EM’s (philosophical) *materialism* , prioritised *human engagement in production* as critical (‘work’ is an important concept in Protestant -Calvinist - theology as well), whence his ‘alienations’ , leastways, begin in that domain. *I theorise, au contraire, the priority of family, culture, and society, within the geist of our species.* Native American children, cruelly and brutishly separated from their families/culture/ and society by their oppressors, as part of an ‘experiment’ to ‘civilise the savage’ , apparently died ‘mysteriously’ in large numbers, or so it is reported. *No: no mystery.* It is explained by what I argue, above: *no EM philosophy can ‘explain’ it.* *This alienation is critical*: at its extreme, *we suffer a loss of being, of sanity, of wholeness, and incur a debilitating anomie when so separated.* *I will repeat: when separated from family, community, and nature, we experience a critical breach of what we could term the wholeness of being.* For humans, involuntary isolation could well be the ultimate terror (which is why being put away’ in solitary ‘ is such a barbaric mode of ‘correction’). Such ‘isolation’ is now, sadly, near-chronic in EM societies (*vide *Ministries of Loneliness) It may well account for the unmistakable madness of our (EM) age, in the final stages of what I have termed, in my recent book (2017) ‘Human Devolution’. I will conclude by repeating my principal thesis : *in virtually Everything it claims , represents, or commends, Euromodernism is categorically mistaken : and , worse, more often than not, positively injurious to human existence. * The sooner we see through, and reject, its many charades, the sooner we might have a chance to save what still remains of our social, natural , and emotive/personal, world. **EuroModernism *, *or EM, for short, is my term for the specific form of Modernism that Europe first invented, and imposed on itself, and its benighted populace, and then exported - perforce, to its everlasting detriment - to the world at large.* R E F E R E N C E S Kanth, R. *Breaking with the Enlightenment*, NJ: Humanities Press, 1997 _______ *Farewell to Modernism,* NY: Peter Lang, 2017 *[©R.Kanth 2018] * -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jorge Ferrer <jorgeferrer2012(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Jul 9, 2018 at 7:20 PM Subject: Cabot's Ecologies of Participation [important new book] To: Jorge Ferrer <jferrer(a)ciis.edu> Dear friends and colleagues, I rarely ever send e-blasts with books recommendations, but I truly believe this one is an extraordinary one you may want to read and have in your personal Library. For more information, go to the link below. No need to respond to this message. OUT NOW! Ecologies of Participation: Agents, Shamans, Mystics, and Diviners <https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781498568159/Ecologies-of-Participation-Agents-Sha…> “*Ecologies of Participation: Agents, Shamans, Mystics, and Diviners *is impossible to capture in some neat established academic sound-bite, mostly because its multiple claims are all quite impossible—impossible, that is, within our present Western and colonized ways of speaking, thinking, and being. If we can imagine ourselves outside or after that framework, we might say that the book, like its author, is a shaman, and a diviner, and a traveler among worlds, including future worlds. The vision of the human (and nonhuman) that emerges through these words and worlds is unabashedly global, comparative, moral, and magical. Here is a weird and wonderful book in which everything is alive and even the stones tell stories. Really.” —*Jeffrey J. Kripal*, Rice University *“*This is a revolutionary book that combines the sensibilities of the scholar and the shaman. It boldly challenges us to entertain the feasibility of ontologically thick multiple worlds in creatively enriching and eco-sensitive ways. Engaging the works of authors as diverse as Alfred North Whitehead, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, and Jeffrey J. Kripal,* Ecologies of Participation* demonstrates the fruitfulness of genuinely transdisciplinary, decolonial thinking in casting new light on an impressive array of philosophical and cross-cultural dilemmas. Cabot’s invitation to inhabit multiple ecologies is as timely as it is essential for our unprecedentedly planetary times.” —*Jorge N. Ferrer, *California Institute of Integral Studies “A joyful, verve-driven contribution to the conversation about the role of ontological difference in getting a handle on what used to be called cultural diversity. Impressive in its scope and ambition, this book takes the whole debate about ontology in the humanities and social sciences to places it has never been before.” —*Martin Holbraad*, University College London Special 30% discount offer! Therefore, we encourage you to submit your inscription to the master as soon as possible in order to carry out this program. If you are interested in joining this master, please send to masterpoliticalecology[at]gmail.com a CV, the name and contacts of two referees and a motivation letter (maximum 500 words) explaining why you want to study degrowth and environmental justice, and why with us at ICTA <http://ictaweb.uab.cat/?setLanguage=en> in Barcelona. Ideally, if possible, send to us an expression of interest by the end of July. We are very excited with this new project of Research and Degrowth <https://degrowth.org/> and ICTA-UAB <http://ictaweb.uab.cat/?setLanguage=en>, and we expect you to be part of it. It is a one-year 60 ECTS programme, tuition fees 3,960 EUR (the minimum our University allows charging for this number of credits). *Do not hesitate to contact me in case of any doubts. * Salut, Gonzalo Gamboa Master coordinator Email: masterpoliticalecology [at] gmail.com *Masters in Political Ecology, Degrowth and Environmental Justice* This is the first Master of its kind, and one of the first in the world in the flourishing field of Political Ecology. The Master builds on a successful 7-year series of international Summer Schools <https://summerschool.degrowth.org/> on Environmental Justice and Degrowth, two ongoing European Research Council projects on global environmental justice – see the Atlas of Environmental conflicts (https://ejatlas.org/) – and on urban environmental justice (http://www.bcnuej.org/) ICTA coordinated also ENTITLE <http://www.politicalecology.eu/>, a post-graduate training network in political ecology funded by the EU. Our program benefits from the several top researchers that are currently working at *ICTA* (the Institute for Environmental Studies and Technology) and *R&D* (Research and Degrowth) in Barcelona, the two institutions co-organizing this program. *Our motivation?* We live in an era of growing inequalities, poverty and environmental disasters. Environmental and social problems are inter-related. Environmental problems have political causes and political solutions – they are a matter of power and inequality. Addressing climate change calls for system change – our program offers the knowledge and tools for thinking and bringing forward such system change. *We aspire to train the next generation* of environmental justice activists, engaged civil servants, and entrepreneurs of the new cooperative economy – those who will put in action the best ideas for creating a society that is fair, enjoyable and ecologically sustainable. *Barcelona* is an international centre for research and action on degrowth and environmental justice. In our Master program, you will get theoretical classes from *top scholars* in the fields of environmental conflicts, urban gentrification, ecological economics and governance of the commons. Our teachers include well-known names in the field, such as Joan Martinez-Alier, Isabelle Anguelovski and Giorgos Kallis. You will be trained in using methods to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of complex problems – such as multi-criteria evaluation, surveys, Q-methodology, and material flow analysis. And you will be taught by practitioners who are experts in their fields, how to facilitate a group process, how to write a policy report or a newspaper article, how to run a social or environmental justice campaign and how to set-up a cooperative. The program focusses on the *theoretical*, *methodological* and *professional* capacity building for young people who want to work in the Social and Solidarity Economy, public administration, Environmental Justice Organizations, think tanks and consultancies. Our graduates will be employable in a variety of positions in the public, non-profit and private sectors. You will be capable of organizing a campaign or launching a lawsuit against a polluting agency or company. You will have the abilities to identify gaps and start a non-profit or a cooperative business that covers real human needs and creates social value. You will know how to approach journalists, pitch and communicate your work to a newspaper, or do an investigative report yourself. You will be able to analyze complex problems using both qualitative and quantitative software and write policy or consultancy reports. *Our Master does not lead to a PhD.* It is a professional program, a “*Master Propio*”, meaning a Master granted by our University. Within Spain (and most of Europe), “Master Propios” are recognized by the private sector, but *do not make you eligible for entering a PhD program*. Our program however will be taught at the *highest academic level*, by researchers who are all professors or holders of PhD – all of them active in publishing top quality research. Our program is suitable for students who already have a Master (or even a PhD) and want to switch to a research career and a PhD (or post-doc) on political ecology, environmental justice or degrowth. Students who already have a Master (or PhD) and want to proceed to a PhD (or post-doc) might also benefit by the option of taking selected modules of our program, as necessary for their needs, instead of the full Master program. Our program benefits from the fact that it takes place in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, a city and country at the forefront of experimentation with the *commons, social justice *and* alternative economies*. We collaborate closely with the municipality of Barcelona and several of the civil groups and cooperatives active in the city and metropolitan region. The students of our program will develop practical exercises and their theses in such organizations, enmeshing their work in the vibrant progressive culture of the city. Our pedagogy is based on *group learning*. Most of our professors are young and experiment with *new methods of teaching*, other than conventional lecturing. You will be asked to read and interact, but you will also experience knowledge through field visits, conversations with local people, work in local organizations and direct Action Research. You will learn how to work in groups, and you will develop most of your assignments and your final project in groups. For further information and queries, visit our FAQ section <https://master.degrowth.org/faq/> or write an email to masterpoliticalecology[at]gmail.com *Contents* The first term will consist of theoretical/foundational courses on degrowth, environmental justice, alternative economics and political ecology. The second term will provide specialized courses on the commos, on methodological tools such as Q-methodology, analysis of social metabolism, multi-criteria evaluation, alongside professional development courses, such as courses on setting up a social business, writing for the press, running an NGO campaign, peer-to-peer, learning legal tools for environmental justice or facilitating a group process The third term will consist of the final project. It will be conducted individually or in group. The final project can be the result of scientific research or of something non academic like producing a documentary, writing an article for a newspaper, preparing a business plan for a social enterprise, or organizing a campaign for an NGO. *Subject* *Credits* *Type* Theoretical and Conceptual Foundations of Degrowth 6 ECTS Obligatory Political Ecology and Degrowth Economics 9 ECTS Obligatory Commons and Feminism 6 ECTS Obligatory Methodological Applications for Action-Research 9 ECTS Obligatory Professional skills in Environmental Justice and Degrowth 9 ECTS Obligatory Final Project 15 ECTS Obligatory *Coordinators* Claudio Cattaneo Gonzalo Gamboa Jimenez *Teaching staff* Joan Martinez Alier Isabel Pont Castejón David Villota Vasilis Kostakis Amaia Perez-Orozco Salvador Pueyo Puntí Isabelle Angelouwski Francois Schneider Beatriz Rodriguez Labajos Georgios Kallis Filka Tsvetkova Sekulova Arnim Scheidel Christos Zografos Federico Demaria Diego Andreucci Daniela del Bene Giacomo D'alisa Marta Conde Puigmal Anke Schaffartzik Angelos Varvarousis Claudio Cattaneo Gonzalo Andres Gamboa Jimenez *Coordinating centres* Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología Ambientales (Ranked 8th for environmental studies by The Center for World University Rankings <http://cwur.org/2017/subjects.php#Environmental%20Studies>) *Collaborating centres* Associació Recerca i Decreixement Barcelona Associació del Punt d’Interacció de Collserola Can Decreix -- Federico Demaria Research & Degrowth (R&D <http://www.degrowth.org/>) Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals (ICTA <http://icta.uab.cat>), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB <http://www.uab.cat>), Barcelona, Spain. In the spirit of continuous innovation, we want to enable the tech community to find value in their spare parts and inspire people to look at older devices in a new way. We're inviting the FAB14 community to help give eight retired Form 1+ printers a new purpose by using the high quality components inside to invent new machines. This will be an ongoing opportunity throughout the week! You can Tweet photos of your project and a short description to @formlabs to share your work. We'll be checking in throughout the week and promoting your creative ideas among our online community of Formlabs users. *Challenge Drones FAB14* Airbus, Continental, Renault and Thales, all partners of Fablab Artilect and sponsors for FAB14, are organizing a Drone challenge during "Mobility" day on Tuesday, July 17. Fwd: Essentials of Unity | Call for Essays and Works

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kosmos Journal <info(a)kosmosjournal.org> Date: Tue, Jul 10, 2018 at 2:02 PM Subject: Essentials of Unity | Call for Essays and Works To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Click here <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> to read this newsletter on our website. [image: Kosmos Community Newsletter] Essentials of Unity | Call for Essays and Works July 10th, 2018 *Unity is oneness of purpose, not sameness of persons. *– Tony Evans *The essence of the beautiful is unity in variety. *– W. Somerset Maugham There is a thinking-trap we can fall into, especially if we live a life of relative privilege, that ‘unity’ means homogeneity – *‘everyone the same*‘ – or more specifically, ‘*everyone like me’*. It is difficult to feel ‘at one’ with people who fundamentally disagree with us. This is particularly true in debates about climate, women’s reproductive rights, immigration, economic justice, and our use of the Earth’s resources. In a beautiful essay, Mark Longhurst explores this tension between differences and unity. *Kosmos* is happy to announce a special collaboration with our longtime ally *We, The World* <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> for this year’s *11 Days of Global Unity <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> *September 11-21. You are invited to submit an essay, poem, video or other work to *Kosmos* to be considered for inclusion in our Fall Quarterly edition. You can choose any one of the *11 Ways to Transform Your World* <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> as the theme for your submission (see below for details). If your work is chosen to appear in *Kosmos* in September, you and your work will also be highlighted as a Featured Participant in this year’s *11 Days of Global Unity <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> *which may also include media and webcast appearances. *11 Days of Global Unity* <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> – *11 Ways to Transform Your World* <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> is a worldwide platform for the promotion of peace, justice, sustainability and transformation that annually includes as many as 700 associated events in over 60 countries around the world. It culminates on September 21st, the *U.N. International Day of Peace. *Participants in 11 Days of Global Unity have included Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Jane Goodall, Deepak Chopra, Daniel Ellsberg, Amy Goodman, Bill McKibben, Eve Ensler, Ralph Nader, Arun Gandhi, Marianne Williamson, Robert Thurman and many other visionary leaders around the world. *Learn more about this below.* Also in this newsletter, we are sharing two more features from the *Quarterly*: a beautiful gallery of photos by Barbara Schaefer <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> titled *absence presence*, and an urgent call by the *Mamos majores,* chief Elders of the Arhuaco and Kogi peoples, shared by Eva Willmann de Donlea <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> . Ordinary Mystic | Oneness, Domination and Difference by Mark Longhurst, via Ordinary Mystic <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> “Anyone who cares about our world today, is painfully aware how utterly far from *union* we are. Our cultural, political and moral landscape is filled with fragmentation, brokenness, seemingly irreconcilable beliefs, vitriol, scapegoating of the different, attribution of evil to the other side, and even imprisonment of those who look different or may come from a different country. Which begs the question: what, on earth, does the mystical vision of *oneness* have to say to today’s reality? Is it just a pipe dream? Does unity need to be thrown out in favor of the cause of justice. Does taking sides with the poor, or the immigrant, or the incarcerated, mean giving up on oneness? But, how can there be true oneness without justice for all, especially the most vulnerable?” *Read more… <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…>* *Kosmos Call for Essays and Works | **11 Days of Global Unity September 11-21* *Due: August 15, 2018. Before you submit, please take a look at our guidelines. <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…>* Kosmos, in cooperation with *We, The World* <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> invites you to submit an essay up to 1000 words, or other works such as video, film, spoken word, art, music and poetry. We will talk about the Earth’s resources – food, water, fossil fuels – and other kinds of consumption, such as the media messages we consume and our mental/physical addictions. What does the word *consuming* bring up for you? In this special collaboration with We, The World for 11 Days of Global Unity <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…>, we ask you to consider connecting our theme to one of the 11 Global Unity Themes for Change <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…>. These themes are:*1 Unity, **2 Interdependence, **3 Environment, **4 Economic Justice, **5 Health, **6 Children And Youth, **7 Women, **8 Human Rights, **9 Freedom, **10 Disarmament, **11 Peace.* *11 Days of Global Unity – 11 Ways to Transform Your World* is is a worldwide platform for the promotion of peace, justice, sustainability and transformation that annually includes as many as 700 associated events in over 60 countries around the world. I was staying in the neighborhood of the Jewish Ghetto and spent many hours walking the streets both day and at night in preparation for the exhibition. I sensed that the streets themselves would let me know what they wanted me to express- that I would find my inspiration there- since it was there the Jews were forced to evacuate their homes. Coming from a Jewish family, I was interested in exploring my origins and the historical events that took place in those streets during the Holocaust from an artist perspective. From there, the exploration of absence presence was born. Fwd: [SEN] seeking recommendations for energy democracy films

But regardless, its a great conversations starter. I think there are some problems with the overall analysis CTS presents (kind of a US vs. China narrative), but we've found it to be an excellent conversation-starter. really beautiful quotes from both Tibi and James ... wow ... a historical perspective might be useful here,i.e. The First European Revolution, 975-1050 from Robert Moore, It first highlights the period of deconstruction that started in the 8th century (contrary to popular opinion, roman structures survived without the romans in the germanic states), after the muslims took control of the medittaranean and all trade collapsed, but then, after the social revolution of 975 (the peace of god movements), a period of fast reconstruction began, with a quite amazing civilization in part based on workers' management (the guilds in the low lands, france and germany and italy) the key is to work on seed forms in preparation of the reconstructive period, they must be able to deal both with the mainstream system, and its decline, i.e. work on two fronts at the same time, survive and thrive in the monetary economy, while making sure they can have access to resources if the former break down; depend on mainstream dependence, while having a measure of resilience and autonomy beyond it, i.e. what Bob and Lynn have done with their life , but at scale <g> On Sun, Jul 8, 2018 at 9:56 PM, Bob Haugen <bob.haugen(a)gmail.com> wrote: > James and all, I trimmed the tail of this message, it had gotten unwieldy. > > > backcasting with holochain > > ...is an intriguing idea.
