Known as syntropic farming, it is a regenerative agricultural cropping <http://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2013-07-23/what-is-regenerative-agricultur…> method developed in Brazil that aims to mimic the way forest plants work symbiotically to grow in abundance. Jane Hawes and her husband Neil are among about 20 syntropic growers in Australia. They used to run a flower farm on their property at Tolga on Queensland's Atherton Tablelands, but gave it away when their crops were wiped out by successive tropical cyclones Larry and Yasi. "We had lost quite a few million dollars and I was just gutted and I just went 'I gotta do something better than this'," Ms Hawes said. Rural news in your inbox? Subscribe <http://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/newsletters/> for the national headlines of the day. The horticulturalist stumbled on syntropic farming when she began researching to figure out what to do next. However, she said she initially scoffed at a suggestion to plant eucalyptus trees alongside fruit trees. "My brain just went into conniptions. It went 'Eucalypts, no way. They're hungry, they're thirsty, they're mongrel things'. "I had to tell my brain to shut up." Ms Hawes ended up taking the advice and has not regretted the decision. "As we're using them [eucalypts] in the system, they actually act like a water nutrient pump," she said. "They're able to access nutrition and minerals that are right deep down in the soil and bring them up, and through pruning it then releases it into the sub-soil." [image: Syntropic farm tolga] <http://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2018-07-13/syntropic-farming-food-forests-…> At a syntropic farm on the Atherton Tablelands, avocados have been planted alongside limes, bananas, paw paws and eucalyptus trees. <http://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2018-07-13/syntropic-farming-food-forests-…> (Supplied: Petals in the Park) Using forest concepts in food production Intensive pruning of large tree species is among the key principles of the syntropic farming system. It is the brainchild of Swiss farmer Ernst Gotsch, who purchased 480 hectares of degraded farming land in Brazil in 1984. Mr Gotsch spent some time observing his natural rainforest surroundings and learning from the native indigenous people, before using his newfound knowledge to grow his own crops. Byron Bay farmer Thiago Barbosa has worked with Mr Gotsch on successive syntropic farming projects in Brazil and is a forerunner of the technique in Australia. "The most abundant system that we have on the planet is the rainforest, and with crops we are trying to move to abundance," he said. Other methodologies taken from the forest include the maximisation of photosynthesis through controlled access to sunlight, natural ground covers and natural succession. "One plant's always nurturing the new generation to come so there are always young plants under big trees and these big trees are always nurturing the forests of the future," he said. Custard apples, coconuts, mangoes, zucchinis, ginger and turmeric have also been part of the trials. Before learning about syntropic farming, Ms Hawes had never considered taking the light-control methods of hydroponics outdoors. "The plants are really happy because they're not being exposed to heavy light when they shouldn't be, so we can grow a wide variety of plants," she said. Other benefits she has noted include natural mulches that are created within the system, the reduction of water use by 80 per cent, and natural control of nasty bugs. "I planted fresh greens underneath these eucalyptus rows and when the bugs hit they actually attacked the eucalypts and left my fresh greens," Ms Hawes said. Long-term benefits outweigh high start-up costs The fewer inputs required when the system is established is considered the major benefit. However, Ms Hawes said starting out took some money and planning. "The mapping and the planning takes a little bit of time and the initial cost, because there are so many plants going into the system, is a reasonable amount," she said. "Beyond that point there's very little cost." Ms Hawes believes the system also makes harvesting easier. "The workers are out working in the shade rather than the hot sun," she said. "And rather than bringing in harvesters just for a short period of time for seasonal produce, you can actually keep good workers on the ground all the time because you've got such a diversity of crops." Tropical climate not a prerequisite Due to her location, Ms Hawes has used tropical rainforest techniques to grow her crops, but the system is in use across Australia's eastern seaboard. She said the principles of syntropic farming could be used in any climate, even the desert. "In the desert they're using eucalyptus but they're also using things that can regenerate the soil, like cacti that grow in those environments," she said. "Now they're becoming lush growing areas." -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: Weekend Roundup: How we will inhabit the future

Weekend Roundup: How we will inhabit the future Finding alternatives to cities that will be thirsty, drowning in waste and controlled by a "digital brain." Nathan Gardels, Editor in Chief Visit the WorldPost at http://www.theworldpost.com <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…> Hong Kong’s dense cityscape of buildings. (Shutterstock) For the first time in the history of human civilization, most people live in cities. Some mega-conglomerations like Shanghai or Delhi are the size of countries, with populations of more than or near 20 million inhabitants. Climate change, water, garbage, transportation flows and digital connectivity will shape the future quality of daily life in our ever-denser habitat. The clash between cultural globalization and the reassertion of identity will also define a new urban character with both generic and unique qualities. In The WorldPost this week, we examine these dimensions of the urban condition in the 21st century. “Urban growth increases the demand for water, overtaxing infrastructure as millions of people crowd into concentrated spaces with limited supplies of fresh water,” writes Ashley Dawson <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…>. “Some of the fastest growing cities are in areas with limited access to fresh water. And many of these cities are located in regions particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change, which in many places means higher temperatures, more heat and evaporation, and more demand for water.” In short, as Dawson puts it, “thirsty cities.” He illustrates the coming challenge through the prism of Cape Town, South Africa, which faces a water crisis due to the drop in precipitation over recent years. Through a combination of lower water pressure, higher water taxes and public education, municipal authorities were able to cut water consumption by 25 percent — not enough to meet the crisis. In the process, he reports, it became clear that the rich and business interests like Coca-Cola bottling plants used more than their fair share. A kind of “water apartheid” was revealed. For Dawson, the answer lies in inclusive governance of water use that rejects privatization of supplies. “Ominously,” the Cape Town native concludes, “it is the world’s largest cities, so-called megacities like Beijing, Delhi, Karachi, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, that are the most water stressed. Solutions need to be oriented around the idea of water as a human right and a common good rather than a commodity accessible only to the rich. Only by democratizing access to scarce water supplies will we avoid a future in which the world’s cities are reduced to incendiary wastelands.” Reflecting on the army of ragpickers who sort through the huge garbage dumps outside Mexico City, the philosopher Ivan Illich <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…> once marveled at the “survival capacity” of those desperate souls who made a bare living through other people’s waste. He saw them as a kind of new class of the urban future, a “technophagic” multitude that feeds off the waste of modern development. Swati Singh Sambyal <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…> offers an alternative vision of the future for rapidly developing countries like India. “India produces 62 million <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…> tons of waste per year — the same amount as all of sub-Saharan Africa,” she writes from New Delhi. “That’s nearly 170,000 tons of waste per day. It would be apt to say that India’s cities are drowning in their own garbage.” The way out of this dystopia, she argues, is not larger dumps, landfills or incinerators but composting and segregation of waste where it originates. “Muzaffarpur, a city with a population of about half a million, was considered one of the dirtiest <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…> in Bihar state not long ago. Today, it’s on track to become one of the cleanest, following a pilot program with the Center for Science and Environment, a research and advocacy organization for which I work,” she reports. “Starting in 2016, we began replacing centralized landfills and dumpsites with a decentralized waste management system, in which small-scale processing centers handle segregated waste and dry recyclables.” For this environmental pioneer, if such practices are adapted across what she calls the “global South,” the future envisioned by Illich can be avoided. Arguably the world’s most famous architect, Frank Gehry <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…>, talks in an interview and short video about how the pluralism of colliding ideas configures the democratic space of cities and is reflected in his own iconic buildings. “The Disney Hall was built in a neighborhood where there are all kinds of funny buildings,” he reflects, “and no one is paying attention to each other. Like democracy, it’s a collision of ideas. I cherish that democracy and the diversity it brings … When you have a unitary aesthetic, it’s overpowering. It tells you who’s in charge and what they mean and how they want you to live, and that’s the story.” He continues: “The collisions in a democracy can’t deny human scale or be purposefully disruptive. They should be collisions of thought.” Gehry extends this view to the world: “If you’re in a world that’s connected like we are, and we’re trying to create a world that’s cooperative, globally cooperative, the architecture should probably express that. That means bringing people from all kinds of cultures together, and it creates a richness and excitement and makes life better.” <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…> Rem Koolhaas <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…>, the Dutch architect known as much for his writings on urban theory as for his buildings, considers the future of cities in the context of rising anti-globalization sentiment. “To the extent there was a global aesthetic developing in architecture, which would have been an international style, already in the 1980s people were critical of its inability to establish distinct identities,” he says in an interview. “That is the reason postmodernism emerged. It both embraced a global aesthetic yet resisted it by mixing it with vernacular styles. That is why I said postmodernism would be the style of the generic city. We can see that this sensibility anticipated and preceded today’s fuller reassertion of identity but still in the global context.” In a brief video clip, Chinese science fiction writer Hao Jingfang <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…> envisions digital connectivity creating neural networks linked up to a controlling urban brain in future cities. Koolhaas responds: “If we simply let cyberspace run its course to a future determined by Silicon Valley, those libertarian-minded engineers will paradoxically lead us to cities shackled by algorithmic conformity. It would be a neural network, yes, but one that operates in lock step.” What so many celebrate as a technological wonder, Koolhaas fears: “What we know without hesitation is that self-driving cars will only work at the price of total conformity of every member of society. Such a system of mobility will depend on everyone behaving with no exceptions. As exemplified by self-driving cars, there is a built-in authoritarianism in this managed space of flows we call cyberspace.” Nathan Gardels <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…>, Editor in Chief Kathleen Miles <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…>, Executive Editor Dawn Nakagawa <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…>, Vice President of Operations Peter Mellgard <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…>, Features Editor Alex Gardels <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…>, Video Editor Clarissa Pharr <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…>, Associate Editor Rosa O’Hara <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…>, Social Editor The WorldPost <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…>, a partnership of the Berggruen Institute <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001YGvLrdTuTteboqD66D2g6j_K2CAFieYfG1GZ2DeQXYVF…> and The Washington Post, is an award-winning global media platform that aims to be a place where the world meets. thanks for diffusing: Re-imagining the left through an ecology of the commons:
by Michel Bauwens 13 Jul '18

13 Jul '18

.... towards a post-capitalist commons transition dear everyone, would be great if you can make a special effort to diffuse this latest essay, this is our attempt (with Jose Ramos) to dialogue with progressive forces about the importance of integrating the commons in political strategy, and how: "Our main hypothesis in this paper is that in the current conjuncture, we are moving towards a ‘dominance’ of a ‘commons’ format for societal development. The commons format assumes a ‘third’ mode of development that indicates civil society and community as critical initiators and guardians of common value. The emerging commons model should be distinguished from both the regulation of capitalism by social-democracy, and state-centric Soviet types of socialism. Just as a full-fledged capitalist system could be seen as starting with the seed forms developed in the medieval city-states, so a future commons-centric society can be hypothesized from currently emerging commons-based seed forms. We believe that just as the revolutions bringing full-fledged capitalism were preceded by the development of capitalists and their seed forms, so a commons-based systemic change is necessarily the result of commoners developing their own seed forms. Therefore, the creation of a systemic ecology of the commons becomes an essential strategy for social change. The key approach for emancipation is no longer a redistribution of market value, or a state-centric appropriation of productive assets, but an interweaving of commons-based production and redistribution." https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23269995.2018.1461442 -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Thought you might find my new TC piece interesting: https://twitter.com/ilparone/ status/1017726095263764481?s=21 “To put it mildly, news media has been on the sidelines in AI development. As a consequence, in the age of AI-powered personalized interfaces, the news organizations don’t anymore get to define what’s real news, or, even more importantly, what’s truthful or trustworthy. Today, social media platforms, search engines and content aggregators control user flows to the media content and affect directly what kind of news content is created. As a result, the future of news media isn’t anymore in its own hands. Case closed? … The driving values of news media won’t ever be fully realized in the algorithmic reality if the news media itself isn’t actively developing solutions that shape the algorithmic reality. ... To maintain their integrity and trustworthiness, news organizations themselves need to able to define how their AI solutions are built and used. And the only way to fully realize this is for the news organizations to start building their own AI solutions to augment the user-citizen, journalists and the newsroom.” As always, all feedback/thoughts very welcome! -Jarno M. https://twitter.com/ilparone Best, Jarno M. Fwd: Stemming The Plastic Tide
by Michel Bauwens 13 Jul '18

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Katerva' Director of Awards Program <Bettina(a)katerva.net> Date: Fri, Jul 13, 2018 at 9:44 AM Subject: Stemming The Plastic Tide To: michel(a)p2pfoundation.net View this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/5ece8f4558e9/stemming-the-plastic-tide?e=a5e1e169bb> Hello everyone, I hope you are enjoying a beautiful summer - while moving the needle of sustainability ;-). The damage plastic (if not recycled or deposed of properly) causes to animals and environment has been in the limelight a lot recently, not least due to David Attenborough's TV series *Blue Planet II* after the making of which he warned, "The world’s oceans are turning into a ‘toxic soup’ of industrial waste and plastic, putting the future of humanity at risk." <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> If you are not yet aware of the magnitude and urgency of the problem, here a few pointers that will bring you up to speed, - In a blogpost the Center for Biological Diversity writes <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>: "Plastic never goes away. And it's increasingly finding its way into our oceans <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> and onto our beaches. In the Los Angeles area alone, 10 metric tons of plastic fragments — like grocery bags, straws and soda bottles — are carried into the Pacific Ocean *every day*. Today billions of pounds of plastic can be found in swirling convergences making up about *40 percent of the world's ocean surfaces*." - 3rd June 2018 Reuters reported <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>, "Plastic bags jam stomach of dead pilot whale in Thailand" - and it is not an isolated incident (read and see more here <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>). Indeed, according to EcoWatch <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> "Roughly 8 million tons of plastic <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> is dumped into the world's oceans every year, and according to a new study, the majority of this waste comes from just five countries: China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam." It is all very well to point fingers, yet dealing with this problem should be the responsibility of each and everyone of us - here <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> some suggestions of what we can do. - You may also want to check out this BBC article on the "Seven charts that explain the plastic pollution problem <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>" and read more about the cause and effect of plastic pollution here <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> . Of course there are attempts to start tackling this problem - not least by Katerva's Grand Prize Winner from 2015, The Ocean Cleanup <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> who are using the fact that the plastic congregates in 5 'garbage patches' as a starting point for extracting plastic from the oceans. <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> McDonald UK <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> plans to ban plastic straws by next year while others realise that recycled plastic can become the raw material for fashion items such as sunglasses <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>. If we (believe) we cannot live without plastic, the least we should do is to keep in in the *circular economy <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>* for as long as ever possible. As usual, politicians are rather more timid opting, in my view, for 'too little too late': a planned ban of plastic straws, cutlery and plates <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> by the EU by 2021 feels rather ridiculous. Anyway, why this newsletter just now? A friend of mine just sent an email about a 4-day program taking place in Cambridge, UK September this year which is all about finding solutions to the plastic pollution crises, and I just had to share it with you. How about doing something similar in your region? Or how about helping us to find the most radical, sustainable innovations, submitting them via our Nominee Candidate Form <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> so we can shine a spotlight on them, and hasten their dissemination? We cannot solve the world's pressing problems by pretending they don't exist, we can only solve them by taking a close look at them, and acting now, in which ever shape or form we are able to. The question raised here is: How do autonomous technologies change the ethics of combat? In "‘That Others May Die’: Autonomous Military Technology and the Changing Ethos in the Battlefield" Gustavo Velho Diogo investigates the philosophical implications of warfare from a distance. You can dive into the story here: http://networkcultures.org/longform/2018/06/25/that- others-may-die-autonomous-military-technology-and-the-changing-ethos-in-the- battlefield/ Gustavo Velho Diogo is a designer from Brazil with a master’s degree in Arts and Culture Studies from Radboud University. He recently got accepted in the UT Austin-Portugal Digital Media program with a PhD proposal on the politics of mapping technologies. Here, time is of crucial importance. The P2P movement’s downplaying of antagonism could hold some strategic value in the short run, especially as long as capital’s co-optation processes cannot be counteracted. But Marxism’s more antagonistic view, on the relation between capitalism’s inside and outside, will likely be of crucial importance in the medium and long run of things. The political tactic and strategy would also have to adapt to different PPPs in different sectors of the political economy." Abstract[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Marxist_Framework_for_Peer_P…> ] "This article examines the relation between peer production and capitalism on a systemic and theoretical level. One problem with understanding peer production as an alternative and potentially competing mode of production in relation to capitalism is that the main bulk of economic theory deals only with capitalism. Alternative economic theories from an emerging theoretical P2P movement have done important pioneer work on commons-based peer production, and in discussing its sustainability as a mode of production both on a systemic and individual level (for the peer producers) within capitalism. This article argues that the disadvantages of the P2P movement’s theoretical framework, compared to a Marxist one, have their roots in an evolutionist motif, and the article aims to situate peer production more clearly in relation to the workings of capital, and in relation to a Marxist understanding of the potential for political agencies and counter-powers to emerge from capital’s outside." Excerpts[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Marxist_Framework_for_Peer_P…> ]Dynamic Coexistence of Modes of Productions[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Marxist_Framework_for_Peer_P…> ] Arwin Lund: "New emerging and anticipatory modes of production can exist outside and in parallel with a hegemonic mode of production. History has shown us that the outside’s modes of production can expand at the expense of the hegemonic mode of production. Mihailo Markovic stresses that the bourgeois revolution that overthrew the aristocracy from political power did so after a long period of capitalist expansion and growth within the feudal economic sector (Markovic, 1991: 542). There exists a dynamic coexistence of modes of productions before, during and after historical transition processes between different hegemonic modes of production. Raymond Williams saw emerging, dominant and residual cultural systems coexisting in such a dynamic and historical interplay (Williams, 1977: 121–127). These cultural systems or modes of production are in different stages of their development and, therefore, have different forms of influence and power over the totality. Fredric Jameson holds that no historical society has existed in the form of a pure mode of production. Old and residual modes of production have been relegated to dependent positions within the new hegemonic mode of production, together with “anticipatory tendencies which are potentially inconsistent with the existing system but have not yet generated an autonomous space of their own” (Jameson, 1989: 80)." Tendential Fall of Capital’s Control of the Division of Labor[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Marxist_Framework_for_Peer_P…> ] By Arwin Lund: "The interesting thing about autonomist Marxism is that the tradition turns the understanding of the capital relation upside down. It is no longer capital that is the main actor, but rather the working class within cycles of struggles. Desire, play and class composition explain the historical changes of the working class (Negri, 1988: 209–210, 212–214, 218, 220). The cycle of struggle theory gains relevance from the last decade’s developments in cognitive capitalism. Carlo Vercellone maintains that capitalist production’s dependency on the general intellect signals a third step in the history of the division of labour, and enables a direct transition to communism (Vercellone, 2007: 15). The qualitative change in capital’s organic composition due to the general intellect of the social brain turns the subordination of living labour under dead labour (constant capital) upside down. Vercellone calls this “the tendential fall of the capital’s control of the division of labour” (Vercellone, 2007: 18). When intellectual and scientific work becomes the dominant productive force, knowledge re-socialises everything, which eventually becomes an unsustainable problem for capital. The cognitive social worker is still dependent on the wage, but has an autonomy in the immediate labour process that resembles that of the craftsman under an earlier period of labour’s formal subsumption under capital. As a consequence, capitalism can be expected to become more brutal and extra-economic in its operations to maintain control over an increasingly autonomous immediate labour process (Vercellone, 2007: 20–22, 31–32). The rising independence and strength of some privileged parts of the social worker have consequences for PPPs. It seems plausible that the cognitive type of social worker is drawn to peer production, and that the social worker as peer producer only is indirectly connected to the class system of capitalism. The political-awareness processes within peer production not only stem from capitalism’s class relations, but also from productive activities outside of capitalism. Vercellone’s argument implies an increasingly strengthened position for peer production, as capital becomes more dependent on more independent social workers, free software, open knowledge and open data for its production. Successful PPPs can force capital to find new niches for its value production, but these niches are increasingly found within the activities connected to the general intellect, and are increasingly populated by the cognitive social worker, and could therefore be increasingly harder to control for capital." Non-Dependent Natural Economies[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Marxist_Framework_for_Peer_P…> ] Arwid Lund: "Liberal economic doctrines idealise a constant expansion of market logic; neo-classic theory ultimately sees the outside to capitalism as an externality and market failure (without value). The outside is caused by the market, rather than already existing. Fleischer contends instead, based in the Marxist tradition of Wertkritik, that capitalism can never be total in its character (Fleischer, 2012: 25; Lehdonvirta and Castronova, 2014: 143). Rosa Luxemburg stressed that capitalism needed a “non-capitalist social strata as a market for its surplus value, as a source of supply for its means of production and as a reservoir of labour power for its wage system”, but because of that, all “forms of production based upon a natural economy are of no use to capital” (Luxemburg, 1951: 368). Dependent outsides, rather than independent ones, could serve capital’s purposes. The natural economies that Luxemburg spoke of were self-sufficient and focused on the internal needs of the communities and, thus, did not produce surpluses of any kind. The problem with them from capital’s perspective was the lack of demand for external products and that they were not poised to work in ways that made it possible to acquire them in any reasonable scale. “Capitalism must therefore always and everywhere fight a battle of annihilation against every historical form of natural economy” (Luxemburg, 1951: 368–369). Capital’s need to transform and shape its outside according to its needs leads to different forms of violence and sometimes (when capital needs an outside to be an inside) to a continuously and ongoing form of what Marx called primitive accumulation. De Angelis and others claims that primitive accumulation has a contemporary and ongoing role where the dissociation of people from the means of production can take many forms (De Angelis, 2008: 28–31). In recent times, David Harvey has pointed out that capital needs new realms of accumulation to ride out its own crises (Fuchs, 2014: 166). During the 20th Century, the outside to capital gradually became politically empowered. State regulations grew in importance after the Great Depression of the 1930s, the fundamental role of ecology was articulated by the environmental movement in the 1960s, and feminism focused on unpaid reproductive work and its importance for capitalism. Bio-politics and the connected bio-economy are today given more importance in academia than yesterday. Contemporary Marxism is informed by the experiences of these social struggles. But neo-liberal restoration has succeeded, through re-negotiations and struggles around value, non-value, exchange and use value, in creating new demarcation lines between the substantial and formal economy. Markets with their conflict-ridden and crises-prone developments have expanded, and earlier outsides have been manipulated and transformed into insides. Luxemburg’s notion of non-dependent natural economies outside of capital provides a more dynamic perspective on peer production than the externality perspective of neoclassical theory. Scholz and Luxemburg enable an understanding of the potential for different political agencies and counter-powers to emerge from the outside of capital. From Scholz’s theories we can take away the importance of expanding the norms of what is not exchangeable, from 20th-Century history we can take the importance of peer production developing strategic alliances with the state, and from Luxemburg the insight that peer production threatens capitalism according to its degree of self-sufficiency as natural economy." Discussion[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Marxist_Framework_for_Peer_P…> ] Michel Bauwens: "Marxist authors often misunderstand us, because the P2P Foundation uses a socially reconstructive approach, rather than a critical approach, and subsumes conflict to reconstruction. It absolutely does NOT mean we ignore or deny conflict, but rather that we play a specialized role accompagnying the reconstructive moment, which will always co-exist with the conflictual forces that resist or demand things from capital and state. For us, working on the concrete expansion of peer production and its ethical livelihoods, is what determines what conflicts are necessary in this specific context; but life and struggles are not reduced to peer production, it just happens to be our strategic focus." -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Xu’s reassessment of the path of agrarian change in China since 1949, which relies on interviews with peasants as well as statistical analysis, provides a fascinating window into the successes and the problems of collective farming in China.” —*David M. Kotz*, Professor of Economics, University of Massachusetts Amherst; author, *The Rise and Fall of Neoliberal Capitalism* In the early 1980s, China undertook a massive reform that dismantled its socialist rural collectives and divided the land among millions of small peasant families. Known as the decollectivization campaign, it is one of the most significant reforms in China’s transition to a market economy. >From the beginning, the official Chinese accounts, and many academic writings, uncritically portray this campaign as a huge success, both for the peasants and the economy as a whole. This mainstream history argues that the rural communes, suffering from inefficiency, greatly improved agricultural productivity under the decollectivization reform. It also describes how the peasants, due to their dissatisfaction with the rural regime, spontaneously organized and collectively dismantled the collective system. A closer examination suggests a much different and more nuanced story. By combining historical archives, field work, and critical statistical examinations, *From Commune to Capitalism* argues that the decollectivization campaign was neither a bottom-up, spontaneous peasant movement, nor necessarily efficiency-improving. On the contrary, the reform was mainly a top-down, coercive campaign. Decollectivization was, indeed, a huge success, although far from the sort suggested by mainstream accounts. <https://monthlyreview.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=36ce609ae68971b4f06…> 154 pages | $25 pbk *order online here* <https://monthlyreview.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=36ce609ae68971b4f06…> ------------------------------ *Zhun Xu* is Assistant Professor of Economics at Howard University.
