With a unique ability to synthesize what are often divisively opposed positions, this illuminating book is a must-read for anyone wondering how to build power."* - Nick Srnicek, author of *Inventing the Future* *"This is a forceful, concise and accessible guide to multi-scalar organizing. It balances original theoretical insights with practical political acumen and deserves the widest possible audience."* - Helen Hester, University of West London To find more information about the book, please visit the book’s page at: http://politybooks.com/bookdetail/?isbn=9781509528547 Please let me know if a promotional offer would be of interest to members of P2P Foundation and I will happily arrange for a discount code you can share with them. the distributed future is already there: taken stock of the token economy after terra0
by Michel Bauwens 21 Jul '18

21 Jul '18

dear friends, as I prepare with Alex Pazaites, our new report on biophysical accountability in open and shared supply chains, I am having several epiphanies which is substantially changing my views on the blockchain space. Think of it this way, we may not like netarchical platforms, but we use them daily, or we try to build distributed alternatives (mastodon), or we try to build platform coops, and maybe one day, their users will take them over. But for billions, they are a huge part of our daily reality. think of the blockchain enabled distributed capitalism in the same way, we may not all like it, but is very very real and it is already creating, very fast, a new distributed ecnomy based on competency networks, token design for more distribued value distribution, the post-corporate dynamics you find there, the fact that it essentially relies on commons and open source even as it commodifies and marketizes, that it involves large corporate, finance and governmental players but also substantlally rebalances the power between labour and capital, all this is absolutely fundamental and profoundlly world-changing. We have to have the same position to it as with netarchical capitalism, i.e. what are the strategies to make it work for commoners and the great majority of the world population, and we probably need to have more extensive dialog with the contributory and cognitive working class that is making it all happening, even if under the cover of mostly market-driven ideologies. what they are achieving and thinking about is no longer science fiction, but daily life for tens of thousands of people, and here in Chiang Mai, a few hundreds but perhaps a few thousands, who are making a living from the token economy and within crypto networks it will also substantially affect our relationship with the natural world; remember how new zealand gave rights to a river, now imagine the second step, that this river is enabled to exercise these rights through a DAO ... of course, such a vision elicits many worries and questions, but there is no doubt about it, this reality is on the horizon, and it competes with the 3 other quadrants of our future's scenario (which is not about the future, but for worlds-to-be being enacted simultaneously today); netarchical capitalism, distributed capitalism, global commons and their entredonneurial coalitions, and the SLOC urban commons, they are all there now, asking for our engagement and critique. But there is no doubt, the inevitable cosmo-local re-arrangement of our productive systems, sine qua non for human survival, will draw on all four quadrants ... I'll end with listing 3 remarkable initiatives I found in just the last week, i.e. the ecological state protocols of Regen network, which allows for the token-based rewarding of regenerative improvements; the ostrom contracts of david dao at ETH Zurich which allows for putting ostrom governance rules in smart contracts, and last but not least, the terra0 initiative for augmented forests etc .. which gives autonomous rights and possibilties for natural entities to defend themselves and defend their integrity. Terence McKenna's 'archaic revolution' is coming to pass in that one! - see the Reverse Mining <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Reverse_Mining> project at regen.network: Regenerating a Carbon Drawdown Economy Through Reverse Mining and the Blockchain <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Regenerating_a_Carbon_Drawdown_Economy_Throu…> - the Ostrom Contracts <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Ostrom_Contracts> as proposed by David Dao. - Terra0 <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Terra0> "is a scalable framework built on the Ethereum network that provides automated resilience systems for ecosystems. Via instantiating a Decentralised Autonomous Organisation atop areas of land to manage them, terra0 aims to create technologically-augmented ecosystems that are more resilient." -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

you have to read 'survival of the fittest' and let it sink in, I learned this at Occupy New YOrk, from a rich Indian 'daughter of the 1%' and their exterminalist scenario (no , they don't want to kill us, they just think it's unavoidable, and so are preparing to survive on their own, in the meantine, they do nothing to avoid the scenario of their own making), and Latour has discussed it in his last book, Michel On Wed, Jul 18, 2018 at 6:25 PM, <douglas(a)rushkoff.com> wrote: > A whirlwind couple of weeks for me will be ending tomorrow night in NYC > when I do a special Team Human Live with Parker Posey on the occasion of > the publication of her new book, You're On An Airplane > <https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/557538/youre-on-an-airplane-by-par…>. > I'd invite you but the night is way sold out - and you'll be able to hear > the conversation on Team Human <http://teamhuman.fm> in just a couple of > weeks. > > I'm just back from London, myself, where we did a fabulous, overfilled > Team Human Live with Pat Cadigan and Rupert Sheldrake. Notable companies such as Deepmind and Xprize were among the list that signed the pledge. The move comes at a time when workers at internet giants have begun expressing concerns over government contracts that will use AI for warfare. Notable among these is Project Maven from Google <https://outlierventures.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65ae955d98e06dbd6…>that helps the US military detect drone images. Amazon and Microsoft have also been providing facial recognition technology to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Given that these are only ‘pledges’ and its actual enforcement or impact on policy may see multiple challenges, there's good reason to be sceptical of the results of these initiatives. For now, we can see it as an interesting move towards making more people aware about the risks involved in governments pursuing AI for weapons development. <https://mailchi.mp/0057e3ca9882/outlier-ventures-daily-brief-2803445?e=f36a…>[image: tw] <https://outlierventures.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65ae955d98e06dbd6…> <https://mailchi.mp/0057e3ca9882/outlier-ventures-daily-brief-2803445?e=f36a…>[image: tw] <https://outlierventures.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65ae955d98e06dbd6…> <https://mailchi.mp/0057e3ca9882/outlier-ventures-daily-brief-2803445?e=f36a…>[image: in] <https://outlierventures.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65ae955d98e06dbd6…> <https://outlierventures.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65ae955d98e06dbd6…> ASK <https://outlierventures.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65ae955d98e06dbd6…> DISCUSS <https://outlierventures.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65ae955d98e06dbd6…> <#m_6351041589332777972_> Our Phones And Gadgets Are Now Endangering The Planet <https://outlierventures.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65ae955d98e06dbd6…> T <https://outlierventures.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65ae955d98e06dbd6…>he Guardian <https://outlierventures.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65ae955d98e06dbd6…> The internet may be contributing to global warming <https://outlierventures.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=65ae955d98e06dbd6…>. First pioneered by Gillette in 19th century, the model involves giving users a product for free ( a razor in the case of Gillette) and charging users for added services ( i.e -blades). The model is common across enterprises of all sizes and nature - be it telephone carriers or internet based entities such as Dropbox. In the token economy, airdrops do the function of on-boarding users with a free token and giving users a reason to engage with platforms. This practice that enabled many internet behemoths such as Evernote and MailChimp in Web 2.0 may well have great utility as start-ups set out to build the decentralised web. quite consistent and rather extraordinary work is being done by the Next System Project and the Democracy Collaborative, as you see in this newsletter, please, especially click on the article on the Corbyn program, which is much more radical than expected, Michel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: The Next System Project <nextsystem(a)democracycollaborative.org> Date: Wed, Jul 18, 2018 at 10:00 PM Subject: NEXT NEW: Three Ideas To Shake Up Our Stagnant Politics To: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Fresh thinking on monetary policy, housing and worker democracy from Next System Project experts The latest from The Next System Project *'Radical' Plan for Economic Democracy* Joe Guinan, executive director of The Next System Project, and Martin O'Neill, senior philosophy lecturer at the University of York in England, explain the significance of the movement-driven economic vision and program of Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party in Renewal magazine, where they are both commissioning editors. They call it "a radical program for dismantling and displacing corporate and financial power in Britain” that will have ripple effects around the world. A provocative Left Forum panel moderated by Next System Project co-chair Gar Alperovitz challenges what most people think they know about money and the monetary system, and opens up new possibilities for how to take bold ideas about refashioning the economy and make them real. Our video and edited transcript of the session features economists Stephanie Kelton of Stony Brook University, Pavlina Tcherneva of Bard College and Michael Hudson of the Institute for the Study of Long-Term Economic Trends, along with attorney and activist Raúl Carrillo of the New Economy Project. During a panel entitled “The Politics of Land and Housing,” The Democracy Collaborative’s Jarrid Green and Peter Gowan were joined by Laurie Macfarlane, who is based in Edinburgh, Scotland and is co-author of "The Economics of Land and Housing" and editor of openDemocracy. Together, they explained some of the strategies being used to make housing a social good for all rather than a profit center for a few. Fwd: The West
by Michel Bauwens 17 Jul '18

what do people think of this narrative ? ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: r kanth <involutegandhian(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Jul 16, 2018 at 11:39 PM Subject: Fwd: The West To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> * The West* * A View from Without* * **Europeans has been , for centuries, a ruthless, aggressive Empire, leastways as viewed by many of its Non-European subjects: Can such Empires do good? It’s possible: but virtues achieved via vicious means may not be perceived/received as such by its victims; much like slaves, who might baulk, at being asked to consider benign aspects -if any- of Slavery. * *More importantly, the glories of European achievements are all too well eulogized by Europhiles, and fill libraries upon libraries, the subject matter of legend and lore; less so, criticisms of this kind, whence I feel no compulsion to be ‘balanced’ in what I say. This is, unabashedly, a Critique: but a verifiable one; neither specious, nor casuistic. * *And why do I articulate it? As in the current, highly visible, struggles against racism and sexism, the historical iniquities of Empire and Colonialism must be kept in focus: lest we forget. Of course, as a ‘Gandhian’ ( at least , in some regards) , forgiveness for such sins is assumed, here, as an article of faith, ipso facto: the tale being told with reason, not rancor.* For at least four centuries, the world has lived/struggled under the European heel/harrow. The latter did not streak ahead of the former by virtue of its prowess in *any field* , but one: *War.* And *genocide*, wherever/whenever it was meet. The primary, if not sole, motivation was - in summary abbreviation - *commerce*. *It is so still:* with* finance* and *war *the only really robust, active agencies , today, within the NATO ambit. Amongst the European tribes – yes, *tribes: *it’s not just Africans and Native Americans who were tribal –the Anglo Normans pulled head of others (notably France and Spain and the Dutch: later, Germany, Italy, *et. al.)* , again largely by virtue of their *martial *superiority. At least in the first instance , this *intra-Euro* superiority of the Anglo-Normans did *not* stem from *technology*: naval technologies were , arguably, broadly similar between France , Spain , and England. But, rather , I venture, from sheer *valor* , (*i.e., * readiness to die, take improbable risks, for King and Country) , irrepressible aggressiveness, and dogged, superhuman persistence against, often , impossible odds. Unfathomable *Heroism*, even of the idiot kind (*vide* ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’) was a sort of a *cachet.* A taste, nay *zeal,* for war, one might say, unequalled by any - other than a few martial tribes of North West of India, no less valiant, violent, and aggressive. Lands , labors, minerals, and ideas/techniques were, thereby, willy-nilly, extracted/appropriated wherever/whenever possible: with resisting natives decimated without ruth, or compunction. Pirates and plunderers, in short. * *Via* such lofty means/ mechanisms, Europe, the *poorest , least endowed of the continents* (* imp. caveat*: * Europe is NOT a continent,* but rather a *sub-continent* like India) amassed the enormous ‘wealth’ ( *as defined/understood within an EM calculus, that is)* it has now. Now it is easy to see why the empires of India and China did not go about pillaging the rest of the world. They had resource blessings in abundance *within their own bounds,* so much so that in the 17th century India and China accounted , perhaps, for about 50% of world’s GDP. India (*i.e.,* its various *empires,* in aggregate terms) was *fabulously* wealthy: and China was thriving. *Which is why Europe – with its chronic poverty/dearth of resources , specially specie - made a bee-line for it*, like Senor Columbus, buccaneer, pirate, and mass-murderer: to catastrophic effect. In less than two centuries *of outright marauding*, the region of India , home to amongst the oldest *continuous* civilisations ( preceding Greece by thousands of years) on the planet, was reduced to its beggarly ‘third world status’ , when the Brits finally left , mid-century, after making their due , if quite forgettable, ‘contribution’ to the sub-continent. *Needless to add , the enrichment of Europe was related to the imposed destitution of the Non-European world.* Arguably, ancient India, long before the European (so-called) ‘Enlightenment’, made contributions to arts, science and philosophy not merely comparable to pre-Enlightenment Europe , but ineffably superior, and far, far prior. Yes, to note, purely *en passant*, but two indices, they had something close to flushing toilets in ancient Mohen Jo Daro: and calculus was invented not by Messrs. Newton and Leibniz, but in India (Kerala), from whence it travelled , unacknowledged , as usual, to Europe (*btw I use ‘India’ to refer to the original civilization that inhabited the sub-continent, not to the modern(ist) political entity that bears that name today*), centuries later. No , they won’t teach that bit of trivia (!) in most of the European world, even in academe, like so much else. *It doesn’t fit the narrative * In much the he same way, Hegel described Africa, of his time, as at the very ‘infancy’ of human history incapable of civilization: in effect denying that Egypt was a Black , Nubian , civilisation , a denial that racist Europe maintained late into the 20th century. At any rate, most European languages ‘derive’ from Sanskrit, and the dominant ‘Christian’ ideational prepossession of Europe today - real or phony - also hails from India: *Christianity , arguably, is an offshoot of Classical Buddhism,* whose mighty philosophical sweep extended from the Mediterranean to Japan, in its heyday . Of course, Europe swiftly ‘*modernized’* classical Christianity (after its ‘enlightenment’*) via* the so-called ‘Reformation’ , to make it ‘fit’ its zeal for *capital accumulation* (by repealing various restrictions placed upon it by the Catholic church, as, *e.g.,* in Canon Law). Interestingly, *no major (or minor) religion ever evolved within Europe*, unless a heartfelt *Mammon worship *is ascribed that status. I happen to think that significant. * Once launched , and stabilized, 18th century on, commerce and industry , within European empires, expanded (after their own native, peasant populations were suitably dispossessed) *via *technical and commercial innovations , even as more conventional expropriations from its colonies continued, enhanced ( as to this day) The Anglo-Normans pulled ahead of Europe in productive and military technologies, until their German cousins( eventually to be , if only grudgingly acknowledged , world leaders, in such areas ) caught up , and surpassed them, by the end of the 19th century, much to their chagrin. The so-called ‘World’ Wars were no more than *European Wars of Empire*, that dragged in the ‘world’ (Japan was the only *Non*-European empire to be so involved, much like Ottoman Turkey, long prior). This, of course, is an imminent possibility even now. War is , and has ever been, to European rulers both an important amphetamine and aphrodisiac, aside from being the lead activity/sector for generations. Indeed, I would venture, *if they had their will*, NATO would have branch offices in New Delhi, Beijing , Seoul, and Tokyo. * The origin of European *Racism -* the clear scourge of our times - lay simply in their relatively facile domination of the world for centuries ( a casual review of ancient Greeks - as the great Martin Bernal notes - who had much interaction with Eastern ideas , does not betray any overtly *racist *ideology of superiority). After all, if you have subdued the peoples of this world , at nominal cost/effort , the belief may follow, like the US, in ‘manifest destiny’: or, like Europe (and not merely amongst Nazis) , in a ‘master race’ of ‘supermen’. Of course, the ‘cure’ for such pretensions is the turn of history itself: by any reckoning, China, India, and Russia (perhaps in that order) are the emergent ‘super powers’ of the future(again using Western indices). And they will indubitably tone down any and all fantasies of white supremacy - like Trump’s boast of making the US ‘great’ again -not by any direct action, but by their very (countervailing) presence. *Thus does ambition check ambition, and diamond(s) cut diamond(s).* So, *Euro-Racism* will , over time, succumb, harmlessly, to the rank of petty chauvinisms that characterize(d) most so-called ‘developed’ societies on this planet. Genocide, also, will, as such, will/might gradually recede from history. * So, can we then conclude that all’s headed to the good here, despite the manifest iniquities of our times? No. I fear not. In fact, far from it. The EM legacy is now wantonly embraced by the entire world (including China, India , and Russia).,* via* generations of overt regime change, clandestine subversion, and endless propaganda. Whence we may well have the same game on, as we do at this time : *of continuing, untrammeled , societal and ecological destruction -* albeit, with brand new players. As a *curiosum,* this was an outcome at least partially- if not entirely correctly - foreseen by Marx in his final years (of a ‘socialist’ Europe undermined by an emergent , ‘capitalist’ Asia). *In effect, we are all Europeans (i.e., EuroModernists) now.* Doubtless, as the *ancient regime gradually * slips, in its economic and political reach , it will turn to a hypertrophic enhancement of its *military *capability, a fact already visible in our times. Faltering dragons may be more aggressive than normal ones. But it will not prevail:* save in the intent (if any) to blow up a world it can no longer rule.* Will it? Remains to be seen. Thomas Jefferson wrote, with unusual compunction, in a relatively more circumscribed era: ‘*when I consider there is a just god in heaven, I tremble for the fate of my country*’. Of course: If he merely *trembled *then, might he not be *shuddering* now? I wonder. As a member or supporter. let's aid one another To: michel(a)p2pfoundation.net Hello, There’s no better time to join and support the Humans United in Mutual Aid Networks <http://mutualaidnetwork.org> (the HUMANs), a global cooperative organization that addresses shortcomings in the formal money-based economy, than in 2018. In these days of increasing scarcity, divisiveness, and inequality, I encourage you to support the reimagining of another way. I ask you to join us by making a gift <https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=BM29P2…> to the HUMANs or becoming an active member <https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=UT8T89…> . Mutual Aid Networks (MANs) are a new type of networked cooperative that offer a solution to the problems caused by the market economy--a way for all people to thrive doing work they love. This solution is one designed for all people, not just a few for whom the market economy serves. In the past year, the Mutual Aid Network constituents have been working towards racial justice, food security, and skills training for those most commonly left out of the market economy. As we have all seen in 2017/2018, these efforts are needed more than ever. During this urgent time of change, I ask you to be an active participant in shaping our new world by joining or renewing your membership in the HUMANs global cooperative network <https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=UT8T89…>. You’ll want to be an official member in time for our Annual Membership meeting in late August (date TBA).
