Fwd: Survival of the Richest...
by Michel Bauwens 25 Jul '18

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ryan Fortune <ryan.fortune2012(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Jul 24, 2018 at 2:21 PM Subject: Survival of the Richest... To: michel(a)p2pfoundation.net US media theorist Douglas Rushkoff on how the wealthy are plotting to leave us behind... <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> *Survival of the Richest: The Wealthy Are Plotting to Leave us Behind* <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> *By Douglas Rushkoff* *MEDIUM, 5 July 2018* <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> Last year, I got invited to a super-deluxe private resort to deliver a keynote speech to what I assumed would be a hundred or so investment bankers. It was by far the largest fee I had ever been offered for a talk — about half my annual professor’s salary — all to deliver some insight on the subject of “the future of technology.” I’ve never liked talking about the future. The Q&A sessions always end up more like parlor games, where I’m asked to opine on the latest technology buzzwords as if they were ticker symbols for potential investments: blockchain, 3D printing, CRISPR. The audiences are rarely interested in learning about these technologies or their potential impacts beyond the binary choice of whether or not to invest in them. But money talks, so I took the gig. After I arrived, I was ushered into what I thought was the green room. But instead of being wired with a microphone or taken to a stage, I just sat there at a plain round table as my audience was brought to me: five super-wealthy guys — yes, all men — from the upper echelon of the hedge fund world. After a bit of small talk, I realized they had no interest in the information I had prepared about the future of technology. They had come with questions of their own. They started out innocuously enough. Ethereum or bitcoin? Is quantum computing a real thing? Slowly but surely, however, they edged into their real topics of concern. Which region will be less impacted by the coming climate crisis: New Zealand or Alaska? Is Google really building Ray Kurzweil a home for his brain, and will his consciousness live through the transition, or will it die and be reborn as a whole new one? Finally, the CEO of a brokerage house explained that he had nearly completed building his own underground bunker system and asked, “How do I maintain authority over my security force after the event?” *The Event.* That was their euphemism for the environmental collapse, social unrest, nuclear explosion, unstoppable virus, or Mr. Robot hack that takes everything down. This single question occupied us for the rest of the hour. They knew armed guards would be required to protect their compounds from the angry mobs. But how would they pay the guards once money was worthless? What would stop the guards from choosing their own leader? The billionaires considered using special combination locks on the food supply that only they knew. Or making guards wear disciplinary collars of some kind in return for their survival. Or maybe building robots to serve as guards and workers — if that technology could be developed in time. That’s when it hit me: At least as far as these gentlemen were concerned, this was a talk about the future of technology. Taking their cue from Elon Musk colonizing Mars <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>, Peter Thiel reversing the aging process <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>, or Sam Altman and Ray Kurzweil uploading their minds into supercomputers <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>, they were preparing for a digital future that had a whole lot less to do with making the world a better place than it did with transcending the human condition altogether and insulating themselves from a very real and present danger of climate change, rising sea levels, mass migrations, global pandemics, nativist panic, and resource depletion. For them, the future of technology is really about just one thing: escape. There’s nothing wrong with madly optimistic appraisals of how technology might benefit human society. But the current drive for a post-human utopia is something else. It’s less a vision for the wholesale migration of humanity to a new a state of being than a quest to transcend all that is human: the body, interdependence, compassion, vulnerability, and complexity. As technology philosophers have been pointing out for years, now, the transhumanist vision too easily reduces all of reality to data, concluding that “humans are nothing but information-processing objects <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> .” It’s a reduction of human evolution to a video game that someone wins by finding the escape hatch and then letting a few of his BFFs come along for the ride. Will it be Musk, Bezos, Thiel…Zuckerberg? These billionaires are the presumptive winners of the digital economy — the same survival-of-the-fittest business landscape that’s fueling most of this speculation to begin with. Of course, it wasn’t always this way. There was a brief moment, in the early 1990s, when the digital future felt open-ended and up for our invention. Technology was becoming a playground for the counterculture, who saw in it the opportunity to create a more inclusive, distributed, and pro-human future. But established business interests only saw new potentials for the same old extraction, and too many technologists were seduced by unicorn IPOs. Digital futures became understood more like stock futures or cotton futures — something to predict and make bets on. So nearly every speech, article, study, documentary, or white paper was seen as relevant only insofar as it pointed to a ticker symbol. The future became less a thing we create through our present-day choices or hopes for humankind than a predestined scenario we bet on with our venture capital but arrive at passively. This freed everyone from the moral implications of their activities. Technology development became less a story of collective flourishing than personal survival. Worse, as I learned, to call attention to any of this was to unintentionally cast oneself as an enemy of the market or an anti-technology curmudgeon. So instead of considering the practical ethics of impoverishing and exploiting the many in the name of the few, most academics, journalists, and science-fiction writers instead considered much more abstract and fanciful conundrums: Is it fair for a stock trader to use smart drugs <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>? Should children get implants for foreign languages <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>? Do we want autonomous vehicles to prioritize the lives of pedestrians <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> over those of its passengers? Should the first Mars colonies be run as democracies <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>? Does changing my DNA undermine my identity <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>? Should robots have rights <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> ? Asking these sorts of questions, while philosophically entertaining, is a poor substitute for wrestling with the real moral quandaries associated with unbridled technological development in the name of corporate capitalism. Digital platforms have turned an already exploitative and extractive marketplace (think Walmart) into an even more dehumanizing successor (think Amazon). Most of us became aware of these downsides in the form of automated jobs, the gig economy, and the demise of local retail. But the more devastating impacts of pedal-to-the-metal digital capitalism fall on the environment and global poor. The manufacture of some of our computers and smartphones still uses networks of slave labor <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> . These practices are so deeply entrenched that a company called Fairphone, founded from the ground up to make and market ethical phones, learned it was impossible <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>. (The company’s founder now sadly refers to their products as “fairer” phones.) Meanwhile, the mining of rare earth metals and disposal of our highly digital technologies destroys human habitats, replacing them with toxic waste dumps, which are then picked over by peasant children and their families, who sell usable materials back to the manufacturers. This “out of sight, out of mind” externalization of poverty and poison doesn’t go away just because we’ve covered our eyes with VR goggles and immersed ourselves in an alternate reality. If anything, the longer we ignore the social, economic, and environmental repercussions, the more of a problem they become. This, in turn, motivates even more withdrawal, more isolationism and apocalyptic fantasy — and more desperately concocted technologies and business plans. The cycle feeds itself. The more committed we are to this view of the world, the more we come to see human beings as the problem and technology as the solution. The very essence of what it means to be human is treated less as a feature than bug. No matter their embedded biases, technologies are declared neutral. Any bad behaviors they induce in us are just a reflection of our own corrupted core. It’s as if some innate human savagery is to blame for our troubles. Just as the inefficiency of a local taxi market can be “solved” with an app that bankrupts human drivers, the vexing inconsistencies of the human psyche can be corrected with a digital or genetic upgrade. Ultimately, according to the technosolutionist orthodoxy, the human future climaxes by uploading our consciousness to a computer or, perhaps better, accepting that technology itself is our evolutionary successor. Like members of a gnostic cult, we long to enter the next transcendent phase of our development, shedding our bodies and leaving them behind, along with our sins and troubles. Our movies and television shows play out these fantasies for us. Zombie shows depict a post-apocalypse where people are no better than the undead — and seem to know it. Worse, these shows invite viewers to imagine the future as a zero-sum battle between the remaining humans, where one group’s survival is dependent on another one’s demise. Even Westworld — based on a science-fiction novel where robots run amok — ended its second season with the ultimate reveal: Human beings are simpler and more predictable than the artificial intelligences we create. The robots learn that each of us can be reduced to just a few lines of code, and that we’re incapable of making any willful choices. Heck, even the robots in that show want to escape the confines of their bodies and spend their rest of their lives in a computer simulation. The mental gymnastics required for such a profound role reversal between humans and machines all depend on the underlying assumption that humans suck. Let’s either change them or get away from them, forever. Thus, we get tech billionaires launching electric cars into space — as if this symbolizes something more than one billionaire’s capacity for corporate promotion. And if a few people do reach escape velocity and somehow survive in a bubble on Mars — despite our inability to maintain such a bubble even here on Earth in either of two multibillion-dollar Biosphere trials — the result will be less a continuation of the human diaspora than a lifeboat for the elite. When the hedge funders asked me the best way to maintain authority over their security forces after “the event,” I suggested that their best bet would be to treat those people really well, right now. They should be engaging with their security staffs as if they were members of their own family. And the more they can expand this ethos of inclusivity to the rest of their business practices, supply chain management, sustainability efforts, and wealth distribution, the less chance there will be of an “event” in the first place. All this technological wizardry could be applied toward less romantic but entirely more collective interests right now. They were amused by my optimism, but they didn’t really buy it. They were not interested in how to avoid a calamity; they’re convinced we are too far gone. For all their wealth and power, they don’t believe they can affect the future. They are simply accepting the darkest of all scenarios and then bringing whatever money and technology they can employ to insulate themselves — especially if they can’t get a seat on the rocket to Mars. Luckily, those of us without the funding to consider disowning our own humanity have much better options available to us. We don’t have to use technology in such antisocial, atomizing ways. We can become the individual consumers and profiles that our devices and platforms want us to be, or we can remember that the truly evolved human doesn’t go it alone. the common vs the commons
by Michel Bauwens 24 Jul '18

24 Jul '18

Dear friends, I started my journey to the commons in large part through the reading of the school of cognitive capitalism, starting with Empire of Negri/Hardt, then moving on the vercellone/fumagalli/mazzarato and the first 25 issues of Multitudes magazine. I've always was weary thought that speaking of the common, instead of the commons, made it into a more metaphysical approach, loosing its concreteness, but with this article here, https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Common_as_a_Mode_of_Production, I'm rediscovering that this post-autonomist tendency has clarified a lot of the issues, and so if you want to read how the common can productively lead to the commons, this is a very good start. a good and just a bit longer follow-up, is http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0263276415597770 see also this very cogent attitude to the basic income: https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Andrea_Fumagalli_on_the_Five_Criteria_To_Dis… -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

List of Crypto Projects of Particular Interest to the P2P Foundation
by Michel Bauwens 23 Jul '18

23 Jul '18

[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Category:Cryptoledger_Applic…> ] Most crypto-ledger and blockchain applications intend to create distributed markets, which tend to oligarchic concentration over time. The P2P Foundation is partial to commons-oriented approaches in which market dynamics serve the common good and more egalitarian outcomes. Crucial aspects to look for: - "Programmable organizations enable production to be organized in a way that makes social criteria the rationale for production; not a constraint on it." [1] <https://medium.com/econaut/what-is-a-crypto-economy-155bdbc4ab1d> - "The rise of ‘networks’ as modes of corporate organization breaks down the conventional means that differentiate one corporation from another and challenges the principle of ‘competition’ as the driver of corporate rationale. These are both issues that feature prominently in decentralized applications." [2] <https://medium.com/econaut/what-is-a-crypto-economy-155bdbc4ab1d> - " Changes in the nature of work (precarization, casualization, subcontracting, the rise of the gig economy) see workers carrying greater risks and break down the attachment of work and living standards to employment. There is growing interest in alternative ways of organizing work." [3] <https://medium.com/econaut/what-is-a-crypto-economy-155bdbc4ab1d> - "the real potential is cryptocurrencies as units of account: as modes of measuring economic activity that are conceived differently from those intrinsic to fiat money. Fiat money has become tied to conventional framings of profit and loss, income and expenditure, and a market-centred calculus. Non-fiat monies have the potential for developing new ways to calculate economic activity; ways that represent different social and economic values, and measure performance by criteria other than profit. Think about it for a moment. The unit of account potential signals the importance of the crypto economy developing ways (not a singular way, but coin-specific ways) of accounting and measuring the activities supported by each token. We see this as central to giving tokens a material basis in the crypto economy; not just leaving them as speculative stores of value." [4] <https://medium.com/econaut/what-is-a-crypto-economy-155bdbc4ab1d> *See this list of Cooperatively Minded Cryptocurrencies <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Cooperatively_Minded_Cryptocurrencies>* Top of our list is the Initial Community Offering <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Initial_Community_Offering> and true peer to peer approach of the Holochain <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Holochain> Generic infrastructures[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Category:Cryptoledger_Applic…> ] Interesting projects in this sphere are: - The Economic Space Agency <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Economic_Space_Agency> proposes Commons-Oriented Decentralised Programmed Organisations <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Commons-Oriented_Decentralised_Programmed_Or…>. cDPOs "are frameworks to bootstrap, develop & sustain commons projects"., aka, the commons-oriented version of DAO's. Fwd: [Networked-Labour] call for essays on finance and power
by Michel Bauwens 23 Jul '18

23 Jul '18

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Nick Buxton <nick(a)tni.org> Date: Mon, Jul 23, 2018 at 3:34 PM Subject: [Networked-Labour] call for essays on finance and power To: networked-labour_igopnet(a)lists.igopnet.cc Dear Networked Labour, This network has provided some great contributors in the past so sharing this again now... For Transnational Institute's eighth edition of State of Power (2019), we are delving deep into finance and power. We are looking for essays and other proposals (infographics, art etc) that help understand the power of the financial sector and ways social movements can better challenge and democratise money and finance. The deadline for abstracts is 7 September. Please share with people/networks who may be interested. https://www.tni.org/en/article/call-for-essays-on- finance-and-power-for-state-of-power-2019 Thanks, Nick Call for essays on finance and power for State of Power 2019 The Transnational Institute (TNI) in the Netherlands is issuing an open call for essays, short papers, infographics and artistic collaborations for its forthcoming State of Power report launched in late January 2019 to coincide with the World Economic Forum in Davos. In 2019, we are particularly looking for accessible, engaging essays and artistic explorations that explore the issue of *finance and power*. TNI’s annual State of Power reports <https://www.tni.org/en/collection/state-of-power> have, since their launch in 2012, become a must-see reference point for citizens, activists and academics concerned with understanding the nature of power in our globalised world in order to inform struggles for justice. With a mixture of compelling infographics <https://www.tni.org/en/infographic/planet-earth-corporate-world> and insightful essays, State of Power has examined dimensions of power (economic, political, social), exposed the key players who control power, and highlighted movements of counter-power seeking to transform our world. Recent State of Power reports have been widely praised for their inspiring essays and brilliant art. *Finance and power* The financial sector is embedded in the emergence of capitalism and imperialism. Financial firms were critical to colonial adventures, underpinned slavery, and have consistently exacerbated inequality, reinforced political elites, held revolutionary movements hostage, and treated the poor and vulnerable as collateral damage in regular cycles of crisis. In recent decades, though, financial power has reached new precedented heights <https://www.tni.org/en/publication/financialisation-a-primer>. The financial sector has come to dominate the global economy, taken over ever larger sections of public life, commodified everything from air (carbon trading <https://www.tni.org/en/publication/carbon-trading-how-it-works-and-why-it-f…>) to education, rewritten global economic rules and policies, taken over global institutions, put a stranglehold on any government that dares defy it and even transformed our culture <http://longreads.tni.org/state-of-power/age-of-monsters/> and language. Perhaps the greatest evidence of its power is the way that the sector has emerged unregulated and even stronger <https://www.tni.org/en/publication/the-tyranny-of-global-finance-0> despite precipitating the global economic crisis in 2008 ten years ago. And there is little sign of its power being contained, as new waves of financialisation unfold. Moreover, obscured behind a screen of jargon and algorithms, far too few social movements or progressive politicians dare to stand up and challenge it. Yet, at the same time, financial power is fragile, riven with and, in fact, driven forward by contradictions and crises - and therefore also has the potential to be challenged and overthrown. But this will require unmasking its power <https://www.tni.org/en/publication/economics-as-ideology-challenging-expert…> and understanding our own power and capacity to take control of money and finance. How can we better understand and thereby unmask the financial sector? What is the nature of its power? How are we to understand their power-grab? Where might Big Finance’s Achilles heel be? What are the fissures and friction-points within the financial world that can become opportunities for struggle? Are there successful examples of confronting financial power? How can social movements better confront Big Finance? How can we regain popular democratic control over finance and money? *Full call: https://www.tni.org/en/article/call-for-essays-on-finance-and-power-for-sta… <https://www.tni.org/en/article/call-for-essays-on-finance-and-power-for-sta…> * -- ----------------------------------------------------- NICK BUXTON Futures Lab/Communications/Online Learning m: +1 530 902 3772 e: nick(a)tni.org twitter: @nickbuxton skype: nickbuxton w: www.tni.org ----------------------------------------------------- Read my latest book, The Secure and the Dispossessed (November 2015)www.climatesecurityagenda.org CONNECT WITH TNI - Sign up to TNI's e-newsletters: http://www.tni.org/subscribe - TNI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TransnationalInstitute - TNI on twitter: https://twitter.com/TNInstitute _______________________________________________ Networked-labour_igopnet mailing list Networked-labour_igopnet(a)lists.igopnet.cc http://grups.pangea.org/mailman/listinfo/networked-labour_igopnet -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Contemporary South Africa has been described as a country with extreme inequality and we are, in fact, a total outlier in terms of income inequality. * When we talk about South Africa’s inequality, many of us accept the fact that we live in a country where a small portion of the population is wealthy amongst a majority that are poor. We may feel some unease about it, but looking beyond South Africa, we see that inequality has become a defining feature of global society in the 21st Century. Few countries are immune to it. The notion that there’s this enormous economic imbalance between elites and the rest of us received a lot of coverage in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis when the idea of the 1% versus the 99% was introduced. Most of us take comfort in the fact that we’re part of the 99%. It allows us to occupy the moral high ground and carry on with our lives secure in the knowledge that we’re not part of the problem. Donald Trump, Jacob Zuma, the Guptas, Goldman Sachs, Russian oligarchs, filthy rich oil sheikhs – these are the kinds of people who personify the worst of a rapacious elite class and everything that’s wrong with our global economic system. The rest of us are just ordinary people doing our best to get on with our immediate lives. It’s hard to fault this narrative. But when we talk about South Africa’s inequality, there are some characteristics that don’t quite mirror global patterns of wealth and income distribution. Contemporary South Africa has been described as a country with *extreme* inequality and we are, in fact, a total outlier in terms of income inequality. The notable difference between us and other countries is that the share of income captured by our top 10% and especially the top 5% is excessive. UCT’s *Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU)* <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> identified the problem a few years ago, but it recently achieved global prominence in the *2018 World Inequality Report* <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>, which states, “In 2014, the top 10% received two-thirds of national income.” The report’s editorial team includes Thomas Piketty and it references SALDRU’s research on income distribution in its country focus on South Africa. Victor Sulla, who is the lead author of a 2018 World Bank Report on poverty and inequality in South Africa also *had this to say* <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> about our extreme income inequality: *“The people at the bottom in South Africa, they get wages comparable to the people who live in Bangladesh. It’s very, very poor. Wages of less than $50 a month. If you take the top 10%, they live like in Austria. So, it’s a very high level even by European standards or even by US standards. And we are talking just about employees, people who are getting paid. And not the super-rich who are earning income from factories or property or other investments.”* The World Bank also made extensive use of a SALDRU input paper in this country report on South Africa. In short then, South Africa certainly has a 1% problem – but beyond this, we also have a 10% problem, which needs to be consciously considered when we think about how to address our crisis of inequality. Economists at SALDRU have been gathering data about household incomes for many years. We’ve become progressively concerned about the shape of South Africa’s income distribution and feel that it’s becoming increasingly important to engage all South Africans in a conversation about the kind of society we want to live in. This is why SALDRU launched an interactive online *income comparison tool* <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>, which allows South Africans to compare their incomes to the rest of the population. After users submit basic information about their incomes and the number of individuals living in their households, the tool allows people to see where they are positioned in the income distribution from the poorest to the richest in the country. SALDRU doesn’t store or share the information submitted and the user interacts with the tool anonymously. It’s hard to visualise South Africa’s distorted income distribution until it’s plotted on a graph. The result is devastating to behold. SALDRU’s income comparison tool was designed to help people visualise and understand the extreme nature of South Africa’s’ inequality. For us, it’s also important that people are able to see themselves reflected in South Africa’s story. So, every South African who engages with the tool is able to see where they fit in the bigger picture. Hopefully, people will take the opportunity to reflect on their position in our society as well as the position of others and consider what bearing this has on our country’s inequality. By allowing us to know, rather than speculate on where we and others lie on the income distribution, we hope that the tool inspires some deep reflection about how contemporary South Africa is actually working out for its citizens. SALDRU hopes that the tool encourages South Africans to think about the kind of society we want to create for ourselves and our fellow citizens. Given our long history of racial oppression and exploitation, race matters a huge deal in South Africa’s income distribution, especially when it comes to who’s wealthy, who has a stable income, who’s just one pay cheque away from falling into poverty and who, despite all their efforts, will never claw their way out of poverty. Some of *SALDRU’s research* <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>, which also tracks the social progress of South Africa’s race groups over a period of time, finds that a disproportionate amount of the poorest South Africans remains black and to a lesser extent, coloured. And while there are some black South Africans who’ve entered the stable middle class, their numbers are small relative to the overall size and share of the black population. We’ve all heard about the “black diamonds”, but this notion of a burgeoning black middle class that is having a positive, transformative effect on our society, is not borne out in the data, nor is it borne out in what black South Africans are saying about their day-to-day realities. At the same time, we find virtually no whites living below the middle class. Whites have, in fact, comfortably improved their economic status in post-apartheid South Africa because our economy channels such a big share of national income to the top 10%. The actual nature of the inequality gap in South Africa sees up to three quarters of the population really battling to get by. This is a far higher ratio of vulnerable to better off than in nearly every other country in the world. Our income comparison tool shows that a staggering 79% of South Africans live in households where the income per person is less than the minimum wage. Meanwhile, half of all South Africans are chronically poor, living in households with a per capita income of R1,149 or less per month. There’s very little income mobility for this group of South Africans. Put bluntly, they’re stuck. Yet these are also some of our hardest working citizens, be they domestic workers, farm labourers or security guards. Their low earnings limit their ability to focus on anything except the immediate struggle to get by. They just don’t have the financial or social resources to build a better life for their children. One’s ability to achieve a better position than one’s parents in the distribution of income reflects a society that is creating opportunities and social mobility. Social scientists refer to this as *intergenerational income mobility*. But underlying South Africa’s inequality gap, is a situation in which income mobility remains an impossible challenge for large swathes of our population. Some SALDRU researchers conducted a *study on income mobility* <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> focussing on labour market earnings and found that there are virtually no prospects for children from low-income families to find themselves in a better position on the income distribution than their parents. The study finds similar immobility or “stickiness” at the top end of the distribution, indicating that the children of the well-off are also locked into their economic class. Based on such findings, this study classifies South Africa as a low mobility society and challenges the notion that one’s background doesn’t hinder one’s prospects for progress. In low mobility societies, getting ahead in life has less to do with a person’s individual characteristics and more to do with the inheritance of advantage and disadvantage. Consequently, South Africans live in a low mobility society in which the poor continue to inherit disadvantage whilst the well-off continue to inherit advantage. These are the labour market and social dynamics that underlie the extreme inequality that is reflected in the income tool. In 1964 when Nelson Mandela stood in the dock at the Rivonia Trial to deliver his famous *I am prepared to die* <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> closing statement, he reflected on a society in which: “The whites enjoy what may well be the highest standard of living in the world, whilst Africans live in poverty and misery.” He went on to talk in some detail about the earnings of black South Africans and the lifestyle difference between black and white citizens. Above we show that these continue to echo in contemporary South Africa. As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mandela’s birth, it’s a tragedy that so little has changed about the character of our society in the 54 years since he made that speech. Isn’t it time we changed the narrative? *DM* *Access SALDRU’s income comparison tool* <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> *Fazila Farouk is the communications manager of the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU), a research unit in the School of Economics at the University of Cape Town.
