Free as in Freedom Production
by Patrick Anderson 06 Feb '12

06 Feb '12

Could we ever learn to share the hardware needed for production? Notice corporations are also 'sharing', and must also cover costs. But corporations must charge *more* than costs to collect Profit because that is what their investors expect as a Return for risk. But if the investors were the consumers, and if they would accept Product as their Return, then Price and Cost are identical since there is no sale, and so Profit is undefined. Learning to Share Sources (co-own the Means of Production) is one half of a plan we can use to begin ignoring the Capitalists. Learning to Swap Skills (barter our specialized labor for the benefit of others while those others perform labor for our benefit) is the other half. When we finally can co-own the infrastructure of all our Production, including ISP and cloud services, but more importantly, agriculture and housing and even city infrastructure will be under our control. And since the Product will not be sold (except during surplus), we will not need to pass tokens to receive those goods and services because the user will already own what he would have otherwise been forced to purchase because of his co-owning the inputs. When we finally can trade work by committing to achieve future production in return for others committing to do the same for us, then we can specialize without passing tokens. Sincerely, Patrick Anderson http://ImputedProduction.BlogSpot.com

Who, ultimately, pays for production? Who should be in control?
by Patrick Anderson 03 Feb '12

03 Feb '12

Why are corporations against us? Can that conflict ever be resolved? What if the investors wanted the consumers to receive *real* solutions? What if the investors wanted to *eliminate* the very problems that corporation was created to solve? What if the investors had no reason to seek scarcity and withhold solutions? Notice the consumers already pay all of the costs of production. And the consumers also pay profit because they pay late. Could we ever get consumers to pre-pay for products (whether chicken eggs or internet service) and then use those funds to purchase the Means of Production? When the consumers are the investors and co-owners for the purpose of using the product directly, then there is no conflict between the goals of the investors and the goals of the consumers because they are the very same set of people! To own for profit is to seek scarcity and stop the consumer from gaining full control. To own for product is to seek abundance with no reason to withhold real solutions. Of course every consumer is either a worker or a dependent. So to say the consumers should own the Means of Production is also to say the workers should own, but specifically it is addressing what they should own, and for what purpose. Workers need ownership in the Means of Production for the products they *consume*, and do not necessarily need ownership in the Means of Production for which they have skills to operate. When consumers co-own the Means of Production, then they can hire *any* worker, and so every worker can begin immediately without trying to own the Means for exchange value. Just as in the OpenSource/FreeSoftware arena, this will drive wages for many jobs to near zero because it will just be so easy and fun to do so many things, that many people will do some jobs for free. This would be cause for alarm if we didn't realize that workers are also consumers and so will necessarily be owners for the purpose of using the product directly.

The Origin of Profit and the Purpose of Production
by Patrick Anderson 03 Feb '12

03 Feb '12

Carsten Foertsch at http://DeskMag.com/en/how-profitable-are-coworking-spaces-177 writes: > Everyone should earn a profit for their work Profit is never the result of work! Profit is the difference between the Consumer_Price and Owner_Costs. Wages are paid for work. Wages are a *cost* of production. Owners receive profit when the charge consumers more than the actual costs of production (where wages are one of those costs). Profit measures the consumer's lack of Ownership in the Means of Production, and falls to 0 (actually is *undefined*) when the consumers co-own the Means of Production and accept the outputs of that production (the product itself) as their return for those investments. This variant of Wikipedia.org/wiki/Imputed_rent is a short-circuit across the market that *eliminates* the final transaction and so there is no sale and no chance for profit and even no chance for taxation! Under this model, each consumer owns the same % of the product as they co-own the Means of that product - even before it is produced (you might say they each the own the entire potential of those productive assets). For example, each co-owner of a milk dairy must pay all the costs of production (including wages), but would then just come to collect their portion of the milk that they *already* own. Of course the owners of a productive asset do not buy the outputs, but we don't usually think of the consumers co-owning for Use Value, and so we believe buying products and paying profit are necessities. But buying products and paying profit are NOT necessities, and can easily be proven by considering neither occurs when the Consumer owns the Means and uses some of those products directly. During Imputed Production, the co-owners are also the Consumers of those products in intend to own exactly the amount needed to achieve the production required for the products they want. Owners who use the product directly must still pay all the Costs of Production, including any Wages, but CANNOT pay Profit - for who would they pay it to? So to say Profit is a necessity is to be very confused about the orginal purpose of Production. Production should be for Use Value, not for Exchange Value. This is guaranteed when the Consumers co-own the Means of Production for the purpose of using those products themselves.

Suresh Naidu tells us about his research on property rights and growth. Suresh Naidu - Property Rights and Growth: Lessons from Slavery Strong enforcement of property rights is good for economic growth, says the conventional wisdom. The link may not be as clear cut, says Suresh Naidu. He and co-investigator Jeremiah Dittmar are digging through court records and newspaper ads on runaway slaves to come up with a measure of property rights enforcement. The hypothesis is that weak enforcement of property rights in people – slavery that is – discouraged investment in slaves and encouraged investment in manufacturing and infrastructure instead. A new angle on the link between property rights and economic growth – this is new economic thinking.Link to video Kind regards,Enno SchröderManager INET Online Please do not reply to this message. How God, Adam Smith, and the invisible hand changes over time by BENJAMIN MITRA-KAHN So with a suitably provocative title I think we can declare 2012 open. And in starting the year I was struck by how words and sentences can change in meaning over time, particularly prompted by this quote: ... John Kay: The Limits of Consistency and Rigor, and Why Economics Needs Eclecticism John Kay suggests that economics has focused too much on axiomatic and deductive reasoning and has been constrained by the simplifying assumptions that such an agenda imposes. The exclusion of inductive reasoning in the name of consistency and rigor is not how real science advances, he says. Economics would benefit from a healthy dose of eclecticism.Link to video The Money View Bank or No Bank?
