Consumptionomics...
by robert searle 22 Feb '12

22 Feb '12

I was sent a review copy of Consumptionomics. I have had no time to write a review but I have read it, and it is an excellent book. Essentially, it lucidly deals with the need for policy-makers to introduce legislation to curb wasteful overconsumption in India, and other emerging economies as they grow richer. It is written by Chandran Nair, a noted businessman. The following review comes from the Financial Times. However, many references, and details on Consumptionomics can now be found on the internet. Maybe Michel might like to put an entry on it on the p2pfoundation to help promote it. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/ef1ff21c-2a62-11e0-804a-00144feab49a.html#axzz1n6…

Fw: We are all Syrians now
by robert searle 22 Feb '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Ian Bassin - Avaaz.org <avaaz(a)avaaz.org> To: "dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk" <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Tuesday, 21 February 2012, 1:36 Subject: We are all Syrians now Dear friends, Assad’s ruthless massacre of civilians in his attempt to crush the Syrian Spring is escalating. But a new international coalition led by Arab League members is meeting in 4 days and is our best hope to stop the bloodshed. Avaaz has a seat at the table and can bring the voices of world citizens directly to decision-makers. Let's call on the coalition to end the violence now: With each passing day, Syria's crackdown on democracy protesters reaches new levels of horror -- bombing crowded neighborhoods filled with innocent civilians, cutting off electricity and phones so families can’t call for help, and blocking medical aid to the wounded. But finally a flicker of hope is emerging that could stop the terror. After the UN Security Council failed, Syria's neighbours in the the Arab League are taking the lead. They have called other key powers to an emergency meeting in 4 days in Tunisia, and Avaaz will be sitting at the table with the Syrian democracy movement to deliver a clear mandate for strong action.Right now, the level of public outrage could make the difference between forceful action and feckless diplomacy. Let's deliver a 1 million-strong call to action, and press negotiators to move now to stop the bloodbath. Click below to sign the petition -- it will be delivered directly to the delegates in the meeting:http://www.avaaz.org/en/arab_league_save_syria_3/?vlThe student organizers and mothers who month after month have led peaceful marches for freedom are now facing down the full military might of Assad’s army. They are calling for the world’s help to ensure that the Syrian Spring does not die a gruesome death on the streets of Homs, Hama and Idlib. So far, the Arab League and United Nations have failed to stop the slaughter. But the international community knows that they cannot postpone action any longer. There is no panacea to end this, but a combination of more targeted sanctions, humanitarian action, support to the opposition to form an alternative government that unites people across the sectarian divide, and a plan to help those fearful of regime change to defect, could tip the balance of power. In situations like this one, a clear public proposal can force the hand of politicians and governments to take meaningful action fast. Let's show those meeting this week the extent of global determination to save the Syrian Spring and end the bloodshed. Sign the urgent petition for action now:http://www.avaaz.org/en/arab_league_save_syria_3/?vlWith so many challenges facing our globe, our community rarely campaigns on the same issue numerous weeks in a row. But the situation in Syria is dire and the Syrian people are counting on us not to let this opportunity to make a difference pass us by. Let’s come together one more time and show them that the world stands with them. With hope and determination,Ian, Jamie, Maria Paz, Allison, Andrew, Emma, Wissam, Stephanie, Bissan and the whole Avaaz teamMore Information:U.N. Fwd: Avoid Social Breakdown. Become Resilient.
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 17 Feb '12

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: John Robb (Resilient Communities) <admin(a)resilientcommunities.com> Date: Thu, Feb 16, 2012 at 11:00 PM Subject: Avoid Social Breakdown. Become Resilient. To: dante.monson(a)gmail.com Having trouble viewing this email? Click here<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/hostedEmail/3859/8fd6675b5a4d5654> [image: Show images to see logo] Avoid Social Breakdown. Become Resilient By John Robb If you want a glimpse of the future for the US, UK, etc. all you need to do is tune into what is going on in Greece. Greece is financially bankrupt, like all Western countries. They just happened to get there first. So what is going on? If we use my friend Dmitry Orlov<http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0865716854/ref=nosim/globalguerril-20>'s five stages of collapse as our reference, Greece is at stage 4. 1. Financial collapse. 2. Economic collapse. 3. Political collapse. 4. Social collapse. *<- Where Greece is* 5. Cultural collapse. What does social collapse mean? In the case of Greece right now, it means people turn on each other: - burned out shells of buildings due to regular riots, - a spike in crime that reaches into even the smallest towns (where thefts, let alone murders, were unusual), and - a boom in corruption as government employees see their wages slashed in half. As bad as this is, it can and will likely get worse. *A Resilient Option* This is the future for the West. It isn't something that some canned goods and bottled water can help you with. The crisis in Greece has already been going on for four years and it is likely to last more than a decade (even if things don't get worse everywhere else, which they will). This is a future that we can prepare for. A future we can avoid. In fact, by becoming resilient we're going to do *very well,* despite the challenges of collapse. Please circulate: Call for papers – The political economy of 3D printing
by Vasilis Kostakis 16 Feb '12

16 Feb '12

Call for papers – The political economy of 3D printing ------------------------------ Online journal *Re-public* invites contributions for its upcoming special issue entitled “The political economy of 3D printing”. The age of three dimensional printers and additive manufacturing has arrived, to the point to which, many analysts liken it to the first years of regular printers or even personal computers back in the 1980’s. The largely unexplored questions of its social, political, cultural and economic implications will influence its future development. The special issue will address some of the following themes: - What types of infrastructures are necessary for incorporating such equipment in the everyday process of production and what impact would this have to the economy of a country? - How can we evaluate the sustainability of such machinery, in relation to the different purposes it can potentially serve, i.e., from artistic interventions to practical applications on the architecture of developing countries and from decorative functions to medical practices? - The 3D printer as a means of production, as part of the peer-to-peer movement as well as of the transfer of open source culture to the production of physical goods. What kind of modes and relations of production are emerging from this development and to what end? A critical approach is certainly needed. - Coming back to “now”, what is the position of 3D printing in the general context of socio-technological developments and to what extent can its operation have immediate practical and useful results? Or is it that its potential impact is confined, for the time, to the more academic and scientific sphere until it becomes even more mature? This issue will try to focus on the social, cultural, economic and political aspects of the evolution of the “Do it yourself” (DIY) to the “Design and do it yourself” (DADIY) model, as well as the future implications that this might create. Send your articles (up to 2000 words) in .odt or .doc format, to the email address: mfountouklis(a)gmail.com Deadline for submissions: *31 May 2012*
