CHRIS MARTENSON'S BLOG ________________________________ Charles Eisenstein: It's Time for A Better NarrativeFriday, February 10, 2012, 10:23 pm, by Adam Our actions are determined by our beliefs. And our beliefs are shaped by the stories we tell ourselves. So what happens when the stories we tell ourselves are inaccurate? The short answer is: we find ourselves engaging in actions that aren't aligned with our best interests. Charles Eisenstein has made a profession out of studying the intersection of economics and philosophy. And he thinks that over the past several generations, enabled by an unprecedented subsidy of abundant cheap energy, our society has become so far decoupled from natural laws that it has adopted a paradigm of thinking (or "stories") dangerously irrelevant to the future we face. As resource scarcity increasingly expresses the natural forces that applied to our grandparents' generation and those prior, we are still living under a mindset that assumes predictable, endless growth. read more » Why Our Currency Will FailWednesday, February 8, 2012, 9:18 am, by cmartenson The idea that the very same economic forces that are currently plaguing Greece, et al., are somehow not relevant to the United States' circumstances does not hold water. As goes the rest of the world, so goes the US. When we back up far enough, it is clear that money and debt are there to reflect and be in service to the production of real things by real people, not the other way around. With too much debt relative to production, it is the debt that will suffer. The same is true of money. Neither are magical substances; they are merely markers for real things. When they get out of balance with reality, they lose value, and sometimes even their entire meaning. This report lays out the case that the US is irretrievably down the rabbit hole of deficits and debt, and that, even if there were endless natural resources of increasing quality available at this point, servicing the debt loads and liabilities of the nation will require both austerity and a pretty serious fall in living standards for most people. read more » James Dines: Owning 'Wealth In The Ground' Is Your Best Bet to Surviving the Coming 'Supernova of Inflations'Saturday, February 4, 2012, 12:52 am, by Adam James Dines has been in the business of making bold calls for over 50 years. In this deep-diving interview, he minces no words about the dire risks the US economy - and the world at large - faces at this juncture. Simply put, he sees the excessive credit in the financial system as having placed the global economy on a collision-course with hyperinflation. Unlike past periods of turmoil, there are no truly 'safe' places for investment capital to hide. Geographic markets and almost all asset classes are positively correlated these days. They share many of the same risks and if a systemic crash occurs, they will crash together. read more »DAILY DIGEST ________________________________ Daily Digest 2/10 - 10 Things Everyone Should Know About The Fed, Visualizing U.S. Debt, Why Is Gas Consumption Tanking?Friday, February 10, 2012, 10:49 am, by DailyDigest * Bill Black on Financial Fraud Investigations * Rick Santelli on Visualizing U.S. Debt; How Many Milky Way Galaxies Do We Owe? * Federal Reserve: Ten Things That Every American Should Know About The Fed * MF Global: Trail Growing Cold - 'No One to Blame' * Postal Service loses $3.3 billion in first quarter * Why Is Gasoline Consumption Tanking? * The Important Roles of Risk and Stealth in the Eagle Ford Shale Discovery * Texas Water District Acts to Slow Depletion of the Ogallala Aquifer Own the Crash Course Special Edition Set with Presenter’s Pack (NTSCor PAL) read more » Daily Digest 2/9 - The Tumblin' Default, Denninger And Pollock Discuss Economy, Are There Holes In Pipeline Transparency?Thursday, February 9, 2012, 10:44 am, by DailyDigest * Bond Investors: Bonds May Collapse Before Bernanke’s 2014 Target * The Tumblin' Default * The Root Cause of Excess Flab Almost Everyone Ignore * Doomsday Capitalism: Just Getting Started or Going Out of Style? * Karl Denninger - Warren Pollock Open Discussion * Glasgow solar study: 'We could put oil back in ground' * End of the Boom: The True State of the Shale Gas Industry * Are There Holes in Pipeline Transparency? * New Campaign Urges Labeling Of Genetically Modified Foods * Helping Soldiers Trade Their Swords for Plows * Rising temperatures at Fukushima raise questions over stability of nuclear plant Our 'What Should I Do?' guide has steps to cook, see & stay warm in times of power outage read more » Daily Digest 2/8 - State Pension Fund Shortfall Grows, Portugal Unions Want Debt Renegotiation, Student Debt Could Be Next BombWednesday, February 8, 2012, 10:42 am, by saxplayer00o1 * Robert B. Part II: Surviving a Currency Crisis The Biggest Risk The biggest risk here is not a sudden collapse of the currency that catches everyone off guard some Tuesday afternoon in a matter of minutes. The biggest risk is not believing that the collapse is underway. Most people are going to lose most of their wealth simply because they could not mentally and/or emotionally grasp what was actually happening. Consider that in Greece the banks are under a tremendous run losing up to 25% of total deposits. Sounds extreme but let's look at it the other way, just what are the 75% of remaining depositors thinking? How could they leave their money in a Greek bank for another minute? What are they thinking? Probably that somehow things will get better, or some other rationalization that supports their decision to hunker down and hope. In reading When Money Dies, an historical account of the events leading up to and through the Weimar hyperinflation in Germany, one hears anecdote after anecdote of families and individuals impoverished by their own disbelief and inaction. Most just sat numbly by waiting for the currency to come back, or buying government bonds because they were asked to as a matter of patriotism, or just trusting that the government would figure something out, hoping that things would soon turn around. In Argentina the same dynamic happened. We've heard in detail on this site from Fernando "FerFAL" Aguirre how those who lost most we the ones who hestitated to acknowledge the reality of what was happening until it was too late. read more » Your faithful information scout, Chris Martenson ChrisMartenson.com ________________________________ Copyright 2006-2012, CMAL LLC. Scientific American: The Shadow Web
by Rose Kudlac 10 Feb '12

http://dev.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=the-shadow-web The Shadow Web Governments and corporations have more control over the Internet than ever. Now digital activists want to build an alternative network that can never be blocked, filtered or shut down By Julian <http://dev.sciam.com/author.cfm?id=3251> Dibbell | February 14, 2012 * [The Internet was designed to be a decentralized system: every node should connect to many others. This design helped to make the system resistant to censorship or outside attack. * Yet in practice, most individual users exist at the edges of the network, connected to others only through their Internet service provider (ISP). Block this link, and Internet access disappears. * An alternative option is beginning to emerge in the form of wireless mesh networks, simple systems that connect end users to one another and automatically route around blocks and censors. * Yet any mesh network needs to hit a critical mass of users before it functions well; developers must convince potential users to trade off ease of use for added freedom and privacy.] Just after midnight on January 28, 2011, the government of Egypt, rocked by three straight days of massive antiregime protests organized in part through Facebook and other online social networks, did something unprecedented in the history of 21st-century telecommunications: it turned off the Internet <http://dev.sciam.com/topic.cfm?id=internet> . Exactly how it did this remains unclear, but the evidence suggests that five well-placed phone calls-one to each of the country's biggest Internet service providers (ISPs)-may have been all it took.

Fw: [MacroScan] Sign-on: Economist statement on capital controls and the Trans-Pacific trade agreement
by robert searle 09 Feb '12

09 Feb '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: E R F <erf(a)vsnl.com> To: networkideas(a)lists.riseup.net; macroscan(a)lists.riseup.net Sent: Thursday, 9 February 2012, 5:27 Subject: [MacroScan] Sign-on: Economist statement on capital controls and the Trans-Pacific trade agreement Dear Economist, We write to ask if you would sign the economist statement below asking negotiators of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) to grant nations the flexibility to deploy capital account regulations to prevent and mitigate financial crises. We are seeking economist signatories from TPPA countries, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Peru, New Zealand, and Vietnam. If you are willing to sign, simply reply to gdaeannounce(a)tufts.edu with your name, title, and country and we will add you to the list. Please feel free to circulate to others from these countries that you think might be willing to sign. They can simply send their name, title, and country to gdaeannounce(a)tufts.edu as well. Deadline for sign-ons: Friday, February 17. The TPPA is what US President Barack Obama hails as a "21st Century Trade Agreement" that improves upon and rectifies past problems in US trade and investment treaties. Thus this is a particularly opportune time to weigh in, as a major TPPA negotiation round will begin in Melbourne, Australia on March 1, 2012. Since the financial crisis began, the Asian Development Bank, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for the Asia-Pacific, the International Monetary Fund and others have all agreed that capital account regulations are legitimate tools to buffer nations from volatile capital flows. However, the U.S. government has used trade agreements to severely restrict a nation's ability to deploy such regulations. In January 2011, we organized a similar letter to the Obama administration signed by more than 250 economists, urging a general reform of U.S. trade policies with regard to capital controls. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner responded by stating that the administration would “seek to preserve” current policy since in his view governments have sufficient alternatives to capital controls to deal with volatility. This new economist letter is more specific to pending negotiations in a region that has been susceptible to volatile capital flows and that has proven that regulating such flows can contribute to stability and growth. In the wake of the crisis, let us urge policy-makers in all TPPA countries to ensure that nations have all the tools possible to prevent and mitigate future crises. Additional background is available here. We would be happy to give you more details about the TPPA and the relationship between trade deals and capital account liberalization in general. Sincerely, Kevin P. Gallagher, Global Development and Environment Institute, Tufts University, kevin.gallagher(a)tufts.edu Sarah Anderson, Global Economy Project Director, Institute for Policy Studies, Washington, DC, sarah(a)ips-dc.org To be issued March 1, 2012 Hon. Craig Emerson, Trade Minister Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia H.R.H. Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei Darussalam Hon. Alfredo Moreno Charme, Minister Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile Yb. Dato’ Sri Mustapa Bin Mohamed, Minister Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Malaysia Hon. Tim Groser, Trade Minister Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand Hon. Eduardo Ferreyros, Minister Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru Hon. Lim Hng Kiang, Minister Ministry of Trade and Industry of Singapore Amb. Ronald Kirk, Trade Representative Office of the United States Trade Representative Hon. Vu Huy Hoang, Minister Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam Re: Promoting financial stability in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement Dear Trade Ministers, We, the undersigned economists, write to you regarding the capital transfers provisions in the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA). We are concerned that if recent U.S. treaties are used as the model for the TPPA, the agreement will unduly limit the authority of participating parties to prevent and mitigate financial crises. Nearly all U.S. free trade agreements (FTAs) and bilateral investment treaties (BITs) strictly limit the ability of trading partners to deploy capital controls – with no safeguards for times of crisis. A few recent U.S. trade agreements put some limits on the amount of damages foreign investors may receive as compensation for certain capital control measures. They also extend the “cooling off” period before investors may file claims in international tribunals. However, these minor reforms do not go far enough to ensure that governments have the authority to use such legitimate policy tools. Authoritative research published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, the International Monetary Fund, and other institutions has found that limits on short-term capital flows can stem the development of dangerous asset bubbles and currency appreciations, and grant nations more autonomy in monetary policy-making, and protect nations from the dangers of abrupt capital flight. The U.S. government’s rigid opposition to capital controls does not reflect the global norm. According to an IMF report, “Most BITs and FTAs either provide temporary safeguards on capital inflows and outflows to prevent or mitigate financial crises, or defer that matter to the host country’s legislation. However, BITs and FTAs to which the United States is a party (with the exception of NAFTA) do not permit restrictions on either capital inflows or outflows.” Indeed, other TPP countries typically allow more flexibility in their trade and investment treaties. While capital controls and other capital management techniques are no panacea for financial instability, there is an emerging consensus that they are an important part of the macro-economic toolkit. Indeed, all G-20 leaders endorsed the following statement at the 2011 Cannes Summit: “Capital flow management measures may constitute part of a broader approach to protect economies from shocks. In circumstances of high and volatile capital flows, capital flow management measures can complement and be employed alongside, rather than substitute for, appropriate monetary, exchange rate, foreign reserve management and prudential policies.” Increased financial stability is in the interest of businesses, working people, and consumers in all TPPA parties. When one country falls into crisis, its trading partners lose export markets. When one country cannot control financial bubbles that drive up currency values, consumers in trading partner countries may be hurt by rising prices on imported goods. When exchange rates are unstable, long-term investors and businesses engaged in exporting or importing face uncertainty. Thus, we recommend that the TPPA permit governments to deploy capital controls without being subject to investor lawsuits, as part of a broader menu of policy options to prevent and mitigate financial crises. We look forward to discussing these issues further. Please direct inquiries to: Sarah Anderson, Institute for Policy Studies, sarah(a)ips-dc.org Kevin P. Gallagher, Boston University, kpg(a)bu.edu Sincerely,

The Crisis of Peer Production
by Patrick Anderson 09 Feb '12

09 Feb '12

Peer Production requires the barriers to entry be eliminated (or reduced to true Costs), but under those conditions, Profit approaches zero. Production cannot be fully Peer when the Investors require Profit as Return. But Peer Production could be partly for Profit and partly for Product... If at least some non-zero % of the Profits are treated as Payer Investment, the Users will incrementally gain co-ownership in the Sources needed for all the Production they require. What say ye, fellow peers? "" The existence of economic profits depends on the prevalence of barriers to entry: these stop other firms from entering into the industry and sapping away profits "" -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profit_(economics)
