Local currency+Thailand and Self-Sufficiency

A story... A number of years ago I was doing some field research for economic development in South West Nova Scotia.. a very rural and low income part of the country (then and to a degree now... I had in hand the income figures for the communities and they indicated that most of the rural families had incomes at or below the poverty level definitions at the time (as I recall around $20K per year... But as I was travelling around administering my q'aire to people concerning their skills and looking for possibilities for economic development I began to notice something quite peculiar, that is that most of the people seemed extremely busy and not very interested in "economic development" as we were defining it AND that there were an awful lot of new pick up trucks, substantial and very well maintained and comfortable houses and virtually no signs of rural poverty. (Also, as an aside this was some 40 years ago rather before the advent of certain modern types of income supplementation through substance importation and sale... So, I decided to probe a bit deeper and started interviewing people on their activities (and not just having them fill in the pre-formed q'aire). What began to emerge was a quite different picture of the local economy... If I included in family income statistics the money that they didn't have to spend on store bought produce (they all had very extensive home gardens) and purchase of service for home and car maintainence (everyone had a brother in law or cousin who did roofing, plastering, simple plumbing, car mechanics etc. and these services were freely exchanged within families) things began to change quite considerably. If one added in the informal barter for fish and the fact that most of the families had a license to kill one moose for food a year (a thousand pounds of meat @ the then equivalent of say $4/lb.) then, rather than having incomes below the poverty line these folks had "incomes" roughly the equivalent of wage labourers in the city. If one further added in the fact that these folks lived on land owned for generations within the same family i.e. didn't have to pay either mortgages or rent it turned out these folks could be seen as actually being in the top quintile of "income" earners and the new pick-ups, vacations in Florida, and continuing home reno's (participation in what King Bhumibol Adulyade calls the "capitalist economy") were really quite intelligible. I think that translating these kinds of phenomena into more modern urban life is difficult but not impossible and likely, as I argued in that blogpost I pointed to yesterday, can be considerably enabled by ICTs and only possible where the "non-capitalist" economy is facilitated by some sort of alternative medium of exchange (given that you don't have the opportunity for the implicit intra-community and inter-generational barter systems that you have in rural communities such as in SW Nova and rural Thailand). Best to all for the season.

"legislation is a declaration of martial law throughout the country"

In sum, the wording appears to create a parallel military justice system that, theoretically, we are all subject to. All that would be needed is an allegation by someone that we assisted someone who in some way assisted someone else in some way. An actual terrorist act would not be needed – and neither would a trial by one’s peers as guaranteed by the Constitution to determine actual “guilt.”

(Tor) anonymity will become illegal with SOPA acts ?
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 24 Dec '11

24 Dec '11

http://thehackernews.com/2011/12/tor-anonymity-will-become-illegal-with.html Excerpts : A little-noticed section of the Stop Online Piracy Act could make it illegal to distribute Tor and other software that can circumvent attempts by the U.S. government to block pirate Web sites. // Under SOPA, however, software such as Tor or even sharing information about software like Tor could be deemed illegal. /// The effects of SOPA and PIPA will be felt throughout the world, as the way the bill defines “U.S. websites” is so broad as to cover most of the Internet itself. The list of collateral damage the bills are feared to cause goes on, and the list of the bills’ critics keeps expanding. In addition to the million+ citizens who have spoken out, the legislation is also opposed by tech companies such as Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, AOL, LinkedIn, eBay, Mozilla, Wikimedia, and, yes, even Microsoft. The Internet is probably the most important technological advancement of my lifetime. Its strength lies in its open architecture and its ability to allow a framework where all voices can be heard. Like the printing press before it (which states also tried to regulate, for centuries), it democratizes information, and thus it democratizes power. If we allow Congress to pass these draconian laws, we'll be joining nations like China and Iran in filtering what we allow people to see, do, and say on the Web.

Corporate and Government Censorship - Criminalization of Internet Usage ?

"The Internet ( freedom of speech ) is Lost" ? - Act Now ! Sign the Petition ! see video : http://fightforthefuture.org/pipa/ The video above discusses the Senate version of the *PROTECT IP Act<http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-s968/show> *, but the House bill that was introduced TODAY is much much worse. It'll give the government new powers to block Americans' access websites that corporations don't like. The bill would criminalize posting all sorts of standard web content -- music playing in the background of videos, footage of people dancing, kids playing video games, and posting video of people playing cover songs. This legislation will stifle free speech and innovation, and even threaten popular web services like Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook. The bill was just introduced: We need to act now to let our lawmakers know just how terrible it is. Will you fill out the form above to ask your lawmakers to oppose the legislation? it goes in the same direction as other measures passing institutions across the world now : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Counterfeiting_Trade_Agreement video on ACTA : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=citzRjwk-sQ More: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/12/internet-inventors-warn-against -sopa-and-pipa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act "Opponents say that it infringes on First Amendment rights, is Internet censorship,[6] will cripple the Internet,[7] and will threaten whistle-blowing and other free speech." and a more animated version based on a movie scene meme : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvXo4sGB7zM

When noticing this post ( see below for thread ) I searched a bit more, as I remembered a relation , for "Phyles", http://p2pfoundation.net/Phyles which limited a Phyle to Dunbar's number. http://p2pfoundation.net/backups/p2p_research-archives/2010-November/011238… excerpt : *"Las Indias fully adopts and practices the* *open ethos, uses decision-making through deliberation, and is committed to splitting into autonomous units, whenever the Dunbar limit is reached."* http://p2pfoundation.net/backups/p2p_research-archives/2010-November/011224… *Michel Bauwens wrote:* * For those who want to follow the debates with lasindias, here are the 3 books that are the basis of their ideas:http://deugarte.com/gomi/phyles.pdfhttp://deugarte.com/gomi/Nations.p… respectively a history of the corporate, governance, and civil forms, each one culminating in the network age* As I did so, I also found out articles as this one http://www.lifewithalacrity.com/2004/03/the_dunbar_numb.html more : http://p2pfoundation.net/Dunbar_Number Forwarded conversation Subject: Re: [Demonetize] Dunbars Number was: Economics of Happiness ------------------------ From: *Nikola Winter* <nikola.winter(a)zeitgeist-movement.at> Date: Tue, Dec 20, 2011 at 8:57 PM To: discuss(a)lists.demonetize.it Hi, in my research on Dunbars Number i faound an article by Dennis R. Fox, "Psychology, Ideology, Utopia, and the Commons" that i want to share with you. Let my cite just one paragraph: "Edney (1980, 1981a) also argued that long-term solutions will require, among a number of other approaches, breaking down the commons into smaller segments. He reviewed experimental data showing that cooperative behavior is indeed more common in smaller groups. After estimating that "the upper limit for a simple, self-contained, sustaining, well-functioning commons may be as low as 150 people" (1981a, p. 27), he listed the following "functional benefits" of reducing group size: * Improved communication helps sustain necessary feedback; * greater visibility of member distress during scarcity enhances the probability of remedial action; * individual responsibilities are harder to avoid; * alienation is reduced; * and the role of money is reduced. Also, with many small commons instead of one large one, shortages in one cannot endanger the whole, and free riders have limited impact. "The improved focus on the group itself, the greater ease of monitoring exploitative power, and the opportunities for trust to develop among individuals with face-to-face contact are also enhanced" (1981a, p. 28). Now here I put in more of my pennyworth, or as my friend put it 'how odd it seems to put more than 20 and more years of learning in a few words that may be passed over, as it seems somehow not doing that learning justice' I know how that feels too. .............................................. Where my thoughts lie on the Dunbar number, is at present our group size is a poor 2 plus 2.4 children. Most people think that the Dunbar number is small, but that is because they compare it to the mass of artificial alienated size we live in. but, There are always two groups we live in, close family and those outside. So years ago we lived in tribal family groups of max 150, with the rest of the world outside, and today also we live in family but it is tiny, with still the rest of the world outside. one can see from that then that we live in a poor situation nowadays, compared to before. There are a few things also that relate to this; one is we tend to see the old way we lived as primitive. the other is that previously our natural group size is around 150 max and then as tribal size grows it then naturally splits off into the formation of new tribes. thus we had a prehistory world or a non invaded world of these villages, so we may ask what was it that caused one of these tribes to unnaturally exceed its numbers to eventually expand and conquer the world? the pressure that is continually on us ever present through history to stay artificially larger. I do not think it is agriculture alone, I think it is tax, number of debt owing in exchange, and power. Protection money. forced exchange. usury. Indeed 'pay or die'. Exchange. or die. Here I think we can divide commodity into two. Those things that if we don't have we die. our needs. and those things that if we can't afford to pay for we don't die. The pressure on us of exchange is with needs. It's the 'Why should we have to pay to live on our earth?' So, if we take my contention that in order to have abundance and all fed, it is a of first order and first priority that we create a gift economy for basic needs, primary resources. as of course We are stupid not to, because paying a price for those things by competitive exchange, or exchange alone, because the competition of the exchange process is inherent. is a stupidity of provision of shortage! Paying a price for those things is actually the hold that keeps the whole money system together. Without that we will collapse back to gift economy of village. Maybe we could collapse back to not only the gift economy but with a cooperation between those villages of useful technology. I still consider highest technologies being our own lovely legs, our own lovely voices, our own group togetherness. and the lower basic technologies. With the more complex technology we esteem, now, as being less, but very interesting. I consider we should esteem the basics and ourselves the highest. (apart from useful medicine and its helpful technology. I think we should esteem that , but living more healthily we would need less as they do in those present communities like okinawa and asabygan and other low impact living peoples who live happy very long lives. it is priorities, that is important. ------------------------------ ---------- From: *fran k* <frank_bowman(a)yahoo.co.uk> Date: Wed, Dec 21, 2011 at 12:13 PM To: discuss(a)lists.demonetize.it I forgot to mention that I loved your comment on this Kellia . putting things clearly into perspective. Frank ------------------------------ ---------- From: *T(a)aworldbeyondcapitalism.org* <openawbc(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Dec 21, 2011 at 4:33 PM To: Demonetize it! <discuss(a)lists.demonetize.it> Dear Nikola, Isen, Frank and friends, This is an interesting conversation about groups of people 150 or less. I have studied communities for a very long time and lived in many all over the USA. I have come to find that most Intentional Communities that have between 11 and 150 people have a turn-over rate of 50-75% of the residents typically staying 6 months or less. In the USA, over 50% of the communes and Intentional Communities of the 1960's have disappeared. The reasons for this have been extensively covered in vatrous books (I once read a book that solely and individually chronicled why hundreds of communities closed down) and in a recommended quarterly publication called Communities magazine. Personally, the top 3 reasons I think the groups of 150 or smaller have a high turn over rate are as follows: #1. Lack of love as a shared priority. Too complex a topic to even touch on. *happy laughter*. #2. The reason I have heard verbalized most often is money issues and lack of long term equity. #3. Drama and lack of third part arbitration, mediators and non-violent communication Here is a wikipedia excerpt: *Nonviolent Communication (NVC)* (also called *Compassionate Communication*or *Collaborative Communication*[1]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonviolent_Communication#cite_note-0> [2]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonviolent_Communication#cite_note-Branscomb-1>) is a communication process. NVC often functions as a conflict resolution<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_resolution>process. It focuses on three aspects of communication: *self-empathy* (defined as a deep and compassionate awareness of one's own inner experience), *empathy <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empathy>*(defined as listening to another with deep compassion), and *honest self-expression* (defined as expressing oneself authentically in a way that is likely to inspire compassion in others). NVC is based on the idea that all human beings have the capacity for compassion and only resort to violence or behavior that harms others when they don't recognize more effective strategies for meeting needs. Happy Holidays everyone, Love for the people, -T -- "...remember that if the struggle were to resort to violence, it will lose vision, beauty and imagination. Most dangerous of all, it will marginalize and eventually victimize women. And a political struggle that does not have women at the heart of it, above it, below it and within it is no struggle at all." ~Arundhati Roy, The 2004 Sydney Peace Prize lecture. _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss(a)lists.demonetize.it http://lists.demonetize.it/listinfo/discuss

Dear Michael, With gratitude, the 6th Eastern Conference for Workplace Democracy held the best conference we’ve had to date. With over 200 participants, we far exceeded our previous attendance record, offered bilingual interpretation and childcare for the first time, and drew from a greater number of cooperatives and organizations than ever before. You can read all of our media coverage and a conference summary here<http://usworker.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=fda959e36be722faffe0d59a…> . *Most importantly, we engaged folks on a national level who see themselves as part of a movement to transform the economy: an economy of democracy and cooperation. * Collaboration and movement-building has brought us to the place we are today. The Occupy Wall St movement has allowed us to engage hundreds, even thousands of people about workplace democracy - people who are eager to learn about the democratic alternatives that exist to the mainstream corporate hierarchy.
