Fwd: Money as Debt III - Evolution Beyond Money

Forwarded conversation Subject: [Ripple] Money as Debt III - Evolution Beyond Money ------------------------ From: *Evgeni Pandurski* <epandurski(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Dec 21, 2011 at 6:19 PM To: rippleusers(a)googlegroups.com I just noticed that the last part of the trilogy is there: (or parts -- it is separated in segments) Preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAg4wZSkHL4 Examining the Problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2LjbBfh7Ug http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlwQJSLPqD0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHg0n6r6hzA Monetary Reform Movements: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Z0V6vb_ayw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJKYHTkLMS0 I think this is the best movie of all the three. This is pretty amazing, considering how exceptionally good the previous two movies were! ---------- From: *Jorge Timón* <timon.elviejo(a)gmail.com> Date: 2011/12/21 To: rippleusers(a)googlegroups.com I discovered the third film not long ago. They have a forum too. http://digitalcoin.earthsociety.org/forum/index.php http://digitalcoin.info/ I think ripple could be the main part of an implementation of their "digital coin" but I need to read the proposal more carefully. Basically I interpreted their "perpetual coin" as Riegel's "valun" and their "credit coin" as ripple, something similar or equivalent, or that ripple could substitute. I thought I made a post but it seems that it failed or something. 2011/12/21, Evgeni Pandurski <epandurski(a)gmail.com>: -- Jorge Timón -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ripple Project" group. Fw: Tax dodging
by robert searle 21 Dec '11

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Marie Campbell - 38 Degrees <action(a)38degrees.org.uk> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Tuesday, 20 December 2011, 17:52 Subject: Tax dodging Dear friend, This morning, we found out that the government’s tax collectors - HMRC - don't seem to have been doing their job properly. Instead of making sure everyone is paying their fair share of tax, they’ve agreed to “sweetheart deals” letting big companies off paying billions of pounds. [1] The government will be hoping we’re too busy doing our Christmas shopping and working out how we’re going to pay our heating bills to care what their tax officers have been up to. But they’re wrong. A huge public outcry and a flood of complaints to HMRC will send a powerful message: we won’t stand for the government giving big business the green light to dodge billions in tax. It only takes 2 minutes to send a complaint letter to HMRC - we’ll collect all the letters together and deliver them in the New Year: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/complain-to-HMRC Today's news is full of the shocking details of these deals. The Daily Mail warns "While families, shopkeepers and small businesses are forced to pay their bills in full, big businesses are striking favourable deals and have a 'far too cosy' relationship with HM Revenue and Customs." [2] As lots of us prepare for winter on a tight budget, it’s not hard to imagine that those billions of pounds could have been spent on something better than stuffing the wallets of the most powerful companies in the country. We could have spent it on schools, on hospitals, or making sure everyone can have a safe, warm home this Christmas time. We know that tax dodging is a big issue. That's why last month we decided that it should be something we should make an urgent priority. [3] This is our chance to make sure we get a fairer system. A people-powered flood of complaints now will surprise HMRC and force them to think again. Send your letter of complaint to HMRC now: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/complain-to-HMRC Over the last few hours on Facebook lots of 38 Degrees members have been speaking out. [4] Here are some of their comments: - Tober: "It's a Scandal. Get to it 38 degrees!!" - Paul: "A list of these firms need to be published and the individual amount they owe. Im glad this is front page news today" - Andy: "disgusting smell of corruption hangs over this whole business." - Dean: "I feel so angry about this - and so impotent, what can be done?" - Michelle: "No it isn't fair, but sadly I'm not surprised! The rich get richer and the poor can pay!" - Diana: "No it isn't fair and that unfairness is at the heart of all the resentment and division in our society. When did someone decide it was OK for tax officials to accept lunches or other gifts?" Send the tax office your letter of complaint now - then we’ll collect them together to make a huge people-powered impact: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/complain-to-HMRC Thanks for getting involved, Marie, Hannah, Johnny, David, Becky, Cian and the 38 Degrees team NOTES [1] See for example: BBC: MPs attack HMRC's 'cosy' deals with big business http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16264706 Guardian: HMRC hid 'sweetheart' tax deals for big business, MPs say http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011/dec/20/inland-revenue-sweetheart-ta… Mirror: MPs blast tax chief for 'cosy deals with big firms' http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/2011/12/20/mps-blast-tax-chief-for-co… Channel 4 news: HMRC "bent rules" for big firms http://www.channel4.com/news/hmrc-accused-of-bending-the-rules-for-big-firms Metro: HM Revenue and Customs 'hiding corporations' unpaid tax worth £25bn' http://www.metro.co.uk/news/885402-hm-revenue-and-customs-hiding-corporatio… Scotsman: Taxman ‘helped big business avoid bills and cost public purse millions’ http://www.scotsman.com/news/uk/taxman_helped_big_business_avoid_bills_and_… [2] Daily Mail Big firms let off £25BILLION in taxes: As families are chased for every penny, corporate giants dodge their massive bills. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2076358/HMRC-let-big-firms-25bn-tax… [3] Read more on the blog here: http://blog.38degrees.org.uk/2011/11/18/october-member-poll-results-now-in-… [4] You can read more here: https://www.facebook.com/peoplepowerchange/posts/135899983188885 Unsubscribe: If you no longer wish to be part of our movement and receive our emails you can unsubscribe here. Fwd: Senate approves : Martial Law enactment through suspension of Habeas Corpus ?

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, Dec 18, 2011 at 1:27 PM Subject: Senate approves : Martial Law enactment through suspension of Habeas Corpus ? To: econowmix(a)googlegroups.com http://www.journalinquirer.com/articles/2011/12/14/chris_powell/doc4ee6179b… "Americans seem ready to forfeit their most basic civil liberty -- actually, all their civil liberties -- without a whimper. By a vote of 93-7 the Senate this month approved a military appropriations bill empowering the government to designate any U.S. citizen within the country as a terrorist and to have the military hold him indefinitely without trial and without the right to habeas corpus, the right to be brought before a court for a judgment on the legality of one's imprisonment. In effect the legislation is a declaration of martial law throughout the country." "The Constitution prohibits suspension of the right of habeas corpus "unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it." While habeas corpus was suspended in certain circumstances during the Civil War, there is no rebellion or invasion now and no impairment of the criminal-justice system, and the mere danger of terrorism does not constitute rebellion or invasion." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habeas_corpus "demands that a prisoner be taken before the court, and that the custodian present proof of authority, allowing the court to determine whether the custodian has lawful authority to detain the person. If the custodian does not have authority to detain the prisoner, then he must be released from custody." http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204826704577073271368204202.h… "Senators spent hours Thursday arguing over a provision that authorizes the indefinite detention without trial of some terror suspects, including American citizens. President Barack Obama has outlined plans to use indefinite detention and lawmakers in both parties sought to make clear such a tactic is legal." -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fw: Time to Plan: the Climate Crisis is Here
by robert searle 20 Dec '11

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: John Fullerton <jfullerton(a)capitalinstitute.org> To: Robert Searle <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Monday, 19 December 2011, 23:15 Subject: Time to Plan: the Climate Crisis is Here To forward this email, click here. Time to Plan: the Climate Crisis is Here “This is what the fight over Stranding Assets will look like. The spotlight on “stranded assets” is growing brighter, and that is good. The idea was brought to our attention when Carbon Tracker released their report, “Unburnable Carbon,” on the growing asset bubble in global fossil-fuel-company public shares, and called for greater transparency and regulatory oversight. Our take on the issue was to highlight the systemic “$20 Trillion Big Choice” between burning the world’s proven fossil fuel reserves already on company and sovereign balance sheets, and preserving a planet that can support life as we know it.” Read more at the Future of Finance Blog. ESG and the Problem with Business as Usual We were very pleased to read Al Gore and David Blood’s “Manifesto for Sustainable Capitalism” in the WSJ last week. It called for “a framework that seeks to maximize long-term economic value by reforming markets to address real needs while integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics throughout the decision-making process.” Companies that integrate sustainability into their business models and investors who evaluate them on that basis, the manifesto claims, are finding their profitability enhanced over the longer term. We only wish Gore and Blood had focused a bit more, and in blunter terms, on the dire consequences of operating under “business as usual” and on the deeply flawed valuation methods that are used to model it. We talked about these last week with Steve Waygood, Director of Sustainable Research at Aviva Investors. He pointed out that by continuing to use discounted cash flow and other short-term focused valuation tools that ignore our biocapacity deficit, companies and investors are setting up the global economy for a period of disruption that will make past credit crises look like a walk in the park. As the sixth largest insurance company in the world and an asset manager with over £249 billion under management, Aviva is far more concerned, Waygood reported, about the market impacts of a natural resources crunch than of another credit meltdown. So should we all be. Read more at This Week at Capital Institute. ________________________________ Occupy Economics As a graduate of a so-called "heterodox" economics school and witness to the Asian economic crisis of 1997, the Occupy Wall Street movement resonates with me in many ways. Author of Adam's Fallacy and my former professor Duncan Foley once explained that "the role of heterodoxy in this long-standing division of intellectual labor is to make mainstream economists as uncomfortable as possible." So I was glad to see Harvard econ students challenge the dominant canon of modern economics in the recent walkout. But what about professors? Read more from Jason Chang about the role of alternative economics in OWS here. What We're Reading This new book by Peter Ressler and Monika Mitchell draws on confidential conversations to reveal what went wrong with the mortgage market and what needs to change from insiders themselves. This is the first book in this area to to include observations from firsthand insiders rather than just reporters with third-hand accounts. Conversations with Wall Street: The Inside Story of the Financial Armageddon & How to Prevent the Next One ________________________________ Comment of the Week “So, our new reality in the 21st Century is that we have the Earth, and it is well and truly ours, but it is all we have. Our challenge is to innovate cutting edge technologies for value creation, capital formation and wealth distribution that are purpose-built to deliver sustainable prosperity without geopolitical expansion.” -Tim MacDonald, 3ME ________________________________ Quote of the Week “The scientific reality of climate change must, for progressives, occupy a central place in a coherent narrative about the perils of unrestrained greed and the need for real alternatives.” -Naomi Klein, Capitalism vs. the Environment To unsubscribe from this email list, click here. 73 Arch Street, 3rd Floor Greenwich, CT 06830 United States
