Federal prosecutions for financial institution fraud have tumbled over the last decade, despite the recent troubles in the banking sector, according to a new analysis of Justice Department data <http://trac.syr.edu/tracreports/crim/267/>by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University. [image: DESCRIPTION]Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), Syracuse University This category can refer to crimes committed both within and against banks. Defendants include bank executives who mislead regulators, mortgage brokers who falsify loan documents, and consumers who write bad checks. (Here are some recent cases of bank fraud prosecutions<http://www.irs.treas.gov/compliance/enforcement/article/0,,id=246532,00.html> .) During the first 11 months of the 2011 fiscal year, the federal government filed 1,251 new prosecutions for financial institution fraud. If that pace continues, TRAC projects a total of 1,365 prosecutions for the fiscal year. That’s less than half the total a decade ago. The decline in these new cases stands in contrast to the government’s broader approach to federal criminal prosecutions. Federal prosecutions for other crimes have grown tremendously, with the number of total new prosecutions filed for all federal crimes<http://tracfed.syr.edu/results/9x204ec2b6dfc0.html> nearly *doubling *over the last decade: [image: DESCRIPTION]Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), Syracuse University -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: JCOM 10(4) - new issue - December 2011

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <jcom-eo(a)jcom.sissa.it> Date: Wed, Dec 21, 2011 at 6:04 PM Subject: JCOM 10(4) - new issue - December 2011 To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Dear all, we announce that the December 2011 issue of JCOM - Journal of Science Communication - (issue 4, volume 10) http://jcom.sissa.it/ is online. Comments, remarks and papers by you are kindly requested. Next issue will be online on the 21st March 2012. CONTENTS: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ARTICLE Metaphors in climate discourse: an analysis of Swedish farm magazines Therese Asplund This article examines communicative aspects of climate change, identifying and analysing metaphors used in specialized media reports on climate change, and discussing the aspects of climate change these metaphors emphasize and neglect. Through a critical discourse analysis of the two largest Swedish farm magazines over the 2000-2009 period, this study finds that greenhouse, war, and game metaphors were the most frequently used metaphors in the material. The analysis indicates that greenhouse metaphors are used to ascribe certain natural science characteristics to climate change, game metaphors to address positive impacts of climate change, and war metaphors to highlight negative impacts of climate change. The paper concludes by discussing the contrasting and complementary metaphorical representations farm magazines use to conventionalize climate change. http://jcom.sissa.it/archive/10/04/Jcom1004%282011%29A01/ ********** Scientists' attitudes toward a dialogue with the public: a study using "science cafes" Eri Mizumachi, Kentaro Matsuda, Kei Kano, Masahiro Kawakami, Kazuto Kato Currently, science is developing rapidly and its influence on society is more significant than ever. This is all the more reason for today's scientists to interact with the general public. To design effective science communication activities, we must understand scientists' motivations and barriers to publicly communicating science. In this study, we interviewed 19 early-career scientists who had participated in science cafes in Japan. >From these interviews, we identified five factors leading to their reluctance to participate in science cafes: 1) troublesome or time-consuming; 2) pressure to be an appropriate science representative; 3) outside the scope of their work; 4) could not perceive any benefit; and 5) apprehension about dialogue with the public. Among these factors, apprehension about dialogue may be the clearest reflection of the scientists' underlying feelings about this form of communication and an indicator of more intrinsic barriers to engaging in science cafes. http://jcom.sissa.it/archive/10/04/Jcom1004%282011%29A02/ ********** Communication and learning structures that facilitate transfer of knowledge at innovation transition points Ronald C. Beckett, Paul Hyland Innovation processes are rarely smooth and disruptions often occur at transition points were one knowledge domain passes the technology on to another domain. At these transition points communication is a key component in assisting the smooth hand over of technologies. However for smooth transitions to occur we argue that appropriate structures have to be in place and boundary spanning activities need to be facilitated. This paper presents three case studies of innovation processes and the findings support the view that structures and boundary spanning are essential for smooth transitions. We have explained the need to pass primary responsibility between agents to successfully bring an innovation to market. We have also shown the need to combine knowledge through effective communication so that absorptive capacity is built in process throughout the organisation rather than in one or two key individuals. http://jcom.sissa.it/archive/10/04/Jcom1004%282011%29A03/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMMENT Science journalism and digital storytelling Nico Pitrelli Among the most interesting aspects of the changes in the media ecosystem a leading role is played by the impact of digital and networking technologies on the ways news reports are built. In this Jcom commentary, the issues of the relationship between digital storytelling and professional news production will focus on science journalism. The commentary will deal with theoretical reflections and practical examples of innovative experiences in which different narration methods were exploited for scientific information. http://jcom.sissa.it/archive/10/04/Jcom1004%282011%29C01/ ********** Science journalism and fact checking Maximilian Schafer At first glance it all seems so easy - scientists create new knowledge, and through their work they show which statements about the world are true and which are false. Science journalists pass these new discoveries on so that as many people as possible can learn about them and understand them. Prior to publication, it is the job of "fact checkers" to examine the journalists' texts to ensure that all the facts are correctly represented. In reality, however, the relationship between the actors is by far more complicated. Using my experience as fact checker of scientific texts for the news magazine "DER SPIEGEL", I would like to comment in this essay on where I see the main problems of fact checking in scientific journalism to be, and on the changes that have come about through the use of the Internet and the availability of smartphones and tablet computers. http://jcom.sissa.it/archive/10/04/Jcom1004%282011%29C01/Jcom1004%282011%29… ********** The post-journalist's toolbox - Trends in digital storytelling Nicola Bruno Based on the stories collected in the essay La Scimmia che Vinse il Pulitzer. Personaggi, avventure e (buone) notizie dal futuro dell'informazione [The Monkey Who Won the Pulitzer. Characters, Adventures and (Good) News from the Future of Information, translator's note] here we provide an outline of the main trends in the current digital information scenario. Beyond the much feared crisis of information, we are actually witnessing the appearance of a great number of initiatives and projects which attempt to keep last century's journalism values alive (though with many economic contradictions). Any journalist, even in the science field, who is interested in communicating in an innovative way can rely on a set of instruments - from the timeline to live coverage, passing through fact-checking - which can change the reporter-reader relation. http://jcom.sissa.it/archive/10/04/Jcom1004%282011%29C01/Jcom1004%282011%29… ********** Telling science stories in an evolving digital media ecosystem: from communication to conversation and confrontation Richard Holliman The globalised digital media ecosystem can be characterised as both dynamic and disruptive. Developments in digital technologies relate closely to emerging social practices. In turn these are influencing, and are influenced by, the political economy of professional media and user-generated content, and the introduction of political and institutional governance and policies. Together this wider context provides opportunities and challenges for science communication practitioners and researchers. The globalised digital media ecosystem allows for, but does not guarantee, that a wider range of range of contributors can participate in storytelling about the sciences. At the same time, new tools are emerging that facilitate novel ways of representing digital data. As a result, researchers are reconceptualising ideas about the relationship between practices of production, content and consumption. In this paper I briefly explore whether storytelling about the sciences is becoming more distributed and participatory, shifting from communication to conversation and confrontation. http://jcom.sissa.it/archive/10/04/Jcom1004%282011%29C01/Jcom1004%282011%29… -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

What is a fair economic system to you?
by Apostolis Xekoukoulotakis 25 Dec '11

25 Dec '11

As some of you may know i am trying to create/simulate a fair economic system. I would like the opinion of the members of this list as to what is in their opinion a fair economic system. I write down a few thoughts of mine. To simplify things, lets assume that there are infinite natural resources and that all can discover each other and they have infinite time to bargain. Let us also assume that no one can cheat, everyone plays by the rules. The first most reasonable rule is this one: 1. *The owner of a thing is the person that decides the way that this thing will be used or decides the transfer of ownership to another person. (trading)* Each person is the owner of the products of his work. I think that the first rule could describe the idealization of our current economic model. Since all natural resources are infinite, the only reason for someone to transfer the ownership of his work would be if ,in that way, he could obtain something he likes and is a product of someone else s work. That product could have been created in the past or will be created in the future The creation of promises adds a new characteristic to our system. It gives it memory. Things that happened in the past affect the future. They specifically affect the ownership of the wealth that is created in the future. I will now write my second rule under which an economic system is fair and show that for the second rule to work the first rule needs to be changed slightly. 2. * At every single moment, each person should have equal opportunity to create or obtain wealth(products) for himself.* The most important part of the rule is that it should happen always. In other words , we want the memory of our system to not affect the equality in opportunity to create or obtain wealth for ourselves. *Now I will explain in my opinion why the first rule gives our system memories that affect the second rule.* I will now create a very specific example that will demonstrate those bad memories. Two beings A and B exist in Mars. They have their own will, don’t like to work, in fact they can only work 8 hours a day, and abide by the first rule. A likes apples and oranges and can make apples and everything else except oranges. B likes apples and makes oranges. A can make 3 apples a day and the best possible outcome would be to have 1 apple and 1 orange a day. B makes 1 orange a day and wants exactly 1 apple a day. If A doesn’t have his orange he is 2 times worse than B when he doesn’t have his apple. In any case we can create an example of 2 persons in which A gives 2 apples to B to receive an orange based solely on the first rule. The fact that A is forced to give 2 apples is the way trading works.* **Please notice that the difference in the state of their condition is affected only by 2 factors, their needs to a product and their abilities to create products.* Also note that wealth will be accumulated in the hands of B but till now, past created wealth doesn’t not affect how new wealth is distributed. Our second rule still works. Now lets go 2000 years in the future. (these apples cannot rot, lol) A new invention is found and is known to both. B decides to give oranges to A only if A creates a tool based on this invention. A has no other choice than to accept. Now B is the owner of this tool that could allow A to make apples at one third of the work. Now A would certainly like to work 2/3 of the previous time to create 6 apples in which he would give 5 to B if B gave him the tool and one orange every day. Now B is given 5 apples instead of 2. *What is important is not that he is given more apples than before. That could have happened anyways. The important thing is that the memory of the system has played an important role in the bargain.* *In other words, now there is a 3rd factor, the memory of the system.* This contradicts our 2nd rule since there is a factor that is not dependent on the current qualities of the persons. In conclusion , in an ideal world where the 1 rule applies, it is possible for the second rule to not work. It is also important to note that we started in a state where the both rules worked and went into another where the 2nd didn’t work. This is important to the p2p movement because a lot of projects try to decentralize, distribute the means of production, ie they are trying to go to a state where both rules work and they dont think whether our way of tracking ownership and promises could revert their efforts. *Let us also note that the second rule doesn’t prohibit a world in which someone is richer than another. In fact we can create an economic system in which the huge inequalities in accumulated wealth wouldn’t not affect the 2 nd rule.* *What kind of 'laws' should we put in order to have both rules obeyed and what is your ideal economic system?* -- Sincerely yours, Apostolis Xekoukoulotakis

Self-Sufficiency: a universal solution to the globalist problem.
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 25 Dec '11

25 Dec '11

via John Médaille <https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=695378522> , who asked : "Michel Bauwens <https://www.facebook.com/mbauwens>, any comments on this?" Some excerpts below, which in the article are also followed up in mentioning Fablabs etc http://landdestroyer.blogspot.com/2011/03/globalists-worst-nightmare.html Self-Sufficiency: a universal solution to the globalist problem. For an extreme in-depth look at Thailand's "Sufficiency Economy" and "New Theory" economics, please see, "Wisdom from the Orient: Self-Sufficiency<http://landdestroyer.blogspot.com/2011/07/wisdom-from-orient-self-sufficien…> ." http://landdestroyer.blogspot.com/2011/07/wisdom-from-orient-self-sufficien… excerpts : Thailand's Answer to the Globalization The foundation of the self-sufficiency economy is simply growing your own garden and providing yourself with your own food. This is portrayed on the back right-hand side of every 1,000 baht Thai banknote as a picture of a woman tending her garden. The next step is producing surplus that can be traded for income, which in turn can be used to purchase technology to further enhance your ability to sustain yourself and improve your life-style. ... Under the "New Theory," demonstration stations all across Thailand have been created promoting education in matters of agriculture and self-sufficient living. The program is competing against the contemporary globalist system, which as of now, is mired in many parts of the world with economic meltdown. The relatively self-sufficient nature of Thais in general has weathered this economic chaos fairly well. In 10 years, a plate of food still costs the same amount of money, as do many everyday commodities. This only further vindicates the value of being self-sufficient and now more than ever, in both Thailand, and abroad, it is a good time to get involved and get self-sufficient.
