Re: [P2P-F] Strategy ? : Phyles as economic networks between Intentional Communities ?

Buchanan
by Natalie Golovin 27 Dec '11

27 Dec '11

Hello Sandwichman, If I follow you correctly, Buchanan cited a source that wasn’t original. Granted, he’s a political journalist, not a scholar and his editor(s) are not first rate. But I see this as a technical error and doesn’t carry enough weight to destroy the coherence of his opinions- which are what terrify the left. Buchanan attempts to convince readers that man is not centrally controlled by economic decisions. He cites the offsetting ties of religion, culture/ethnicity/race, and claims in his latest book, that tribalism is winning hearts & minds despite the energies of academia, governments & corporations. Personally, I think people are influenced by a multiplicity of factors whose weights change depending on personal and external factors. And it’s intellectually dishonest to dismiss an entire viewpoint based on limited documentation. I happen to respect his strong stance against regime-change war & enjoy all sides of an argument-which is why I remain on this mailing list.

Fukuyama on the absent left
by Peter Mazsa 27 Dec '11

27 Dec '11

FYI: "[...] It has been several decades since anyone on the left has been able to articulate, first, a coherent analysis of what happens to the structure of advanced societies as they undergo economic change and, second, a realistic agenda that has any hope of protecting a middle-class society. The main trends in left-wing thought in the last two generations have been, frankly, disastrous as either conceptual frameworks or tools for mobilization. Marxism died many years ago, and the few old believers still around are ready for nursing homes. The academic left replaced it with postmodernism, multiculturalism, feminism, critical theory, and a host of other fragmented intellectual trends that are more cultural than economic in focus. Postmodernism begins with a denial of the possibility of any master narrative of history or society, undercutting its own authority as a voice for the majority of citizens who feel betrayed by their elites. Multiculturalism validates the victimhood of virtually every out-group. It is impossible to generate a mass progressive movement on the basis of such a motley coalition: most of the working- and lower-middle-class citizens victimized by the system are culturally conservative and would be embarrassed to be seen in the presence of allies like this. Whatever the theoretical justifications underlying the left’s agenda, its biggest problem is a lack of credibility. Over the past two generations, the mainstream left has followed a social democratic program that centers on the state provision of a variety of services, such as pensions, health care, and education. That model is now exhausted: welfare states have become big, bureaucratic, and inflexible; they are often captured by the very organizations that administer them, through public-sector unions; and, most important, they are fiscally unsustainable given the aging of populations virtually everywhere in the developed world. Thus, when existing social democratic parties come to power, they no longer aspire to be more than custodians of a welfare state that was created decades ago; none has a new, exciting agenda around which to rally the masses. AN IDEOLOGY OF THE FUTURE Imagine, for a moment, an obscure scribbler today in a garret somewhere trying to outline an ideology of the future that could provide a realistic path toward a world with healthy middle-class societies and robust democracies. What would that ideology look like? [...] the agenda it put forward to protect middle-class life could not simply rely on the existing mechanisms of the welfare state. The ideology would need to somehow redesign the public sector, freeing it from its dependence on existing stakeholders and using new, technology-empowered approaches to delivering services. It would have to argue forthrightly for more redistribution and present a realistic route to ending interest groups’ domination of politics. Fwd: Netention P2P with Gnutella
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 27 Dec '11

27 Dec '11

Update in message from Seth regarding Netention http://automenta.com/netention " Netention is a tool for describing one's current life situation (“is”), and potential future situations (“will be”) – as linked data objects. " ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: SeH Date: Tue, Dec 27, 2011 at 1:33 AM Subject: Netention P2P with Gnutella To: global-survival(a)googlegroups.com From: http://blog.automenta.com/2011/12/netention-p2p-with-gnutella.html<http://blog.automenta.com/2011/12/netention-p2p-with-gnutella.html> I can't completely trust that closed-source software like Windows or Apple products work the way they say they do, or that they don't operate against my best interests. in contrast, Linux and Android (which contains Linux inside it) are open platforms. i appreciate open source and how it applies not just to software but hardware... since anything resulting from intellectual effort can be shared Netention is stilll writing its own story ;) To me it's a human/computer/human interaction paradigm and network protocol with some prototypical source code and documentation that attempt to explain it. I'm excited to see what it grows to become. Whether it fills some or all of the niches, or transforms the paradigm entirely... I don't know. Though my intuition is that it has more potential than can be contained into a single .COM... and should be a fundamental ubiquitous software component in the same way that e-mail and office software is universal and has many implementations. I resurrected an older prototype of Netention and began integrating the Gnutella network library 'jTella' into it. i figure Netention ought to be a conveniently accessible desktop / mobile app and not confined to web browser or associated with a particular .com/.net. the web version can also be developed in parallel. gnutella is unstoppable. i remember how excited i was when Nullsoft first released it. and then their super-secure GNU WASTE darknet a few years afterward.... I setup a temporary site at www.netention.org but the main development area is still http://automenta.com/netention You can see an old video of the java desktop prototype that i'm working with again in the 2nd video of the video playlist embedded on the www.netention.org site. once its more ready i plan to commit it to a new project on github. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Global Survival" group. Useful for Phyles ? - Audio recording : Financing Social Entreprises
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 26 Dec '11

Path to Financing Part 1<http://rsfsocialfinance.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/path_part1.mp3>: Introduction by RSF’s Esther Park, followed by Ahmed Rahim and Chris Mann. Path to Financing Part 2<http://rsfsocialfinance.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/path_part2.mp3>: Lee Zimmerman and Thaleon Tremain. Lee and Thaleon used slides for their presentation. If you’d like to view their PowerPoint, you can download it here<http://rsfsocialfinance.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/path-to-financing.pp…> . http://rsfsocialfinance.org/blog/ http://rsfsocialfinance.org/2011/11/power-dynamics/ RSF has hosted, sponsored, and participated in several discussions about financing social enterprises. Last month RSF and Hub Bay Area <http://bayarea.the-hub.net/public/> hosted a panel discussion. We handed the stage over to four successful social enterprise leaders and let them tell us their financing experiences from start-up to present day. Ahmed Rahim from Numi Tea <http://www.numitea.com/>, Chris Mann from Guayaki<http://guayaki.com/>, Lee Zimmerman from Evergreen Lodge <http://www.evergreenlodge.com/>, and Thaleon Tremain from Pachamama Coffee Cooperative <http://www.pacha.coop/> told their financing biographies, candidly sharing the challenges they faced and highlighting the successful steps that got them to where they are today. Each story is unique but the importance of community and steadfast dedication to mission were common themes throughout. If you’re considering starting a business, have recently embarked on a new venture, or have an affinity for social enterprises, this is definitely worth listening to. The audio recording is split into two parts.
