Freeter Documentaries - Freedom and Survival - 10 million "Freeters" in Japan ?
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 12 Dec '11

Documentaries : In English - Freeter Union ? : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=godii2n37nk French Arte Documentary : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk-ugYzteqY /// Personal Note : Time for a larger awareness of international solidarity networks of freeters ? And self organization through cooperative frameworks ? Does anyone know freeter unions in Europe ? I notice "lost generation" coming together via initiatives such as this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCocK4bKIFE http://edgeryders.ppa.coe.int/stream Sites such as couchsurfing.com , and other hospitalitysites, may also be converging a number of "freeters"... /// Synopsis ( of Freeter Union Documentary ) Freedom and Survival -- The Freeter Union" is the story of a Japanese Union created in 2004 in Tokyo through and for Freeters. Freeters are mostly young japanese people, who work precariously. In the earlier times it was often a conscious choice, creating an alternative life style apart from the mainstream career in the Japanese Cooperations. But nowaday, especially since the burst of the economic bubble in the 1990ies and through the crisis in 2008, young people often have no other choice and becoming a Freeter starts to be an existential necessity to survive in a society build upon work as the most important value and identity. So the union has the goal of fighting unjust work conditions to regain freedom as well as giving solidarity and emotional support to each other in their everyday lives, partially also through living together, which is quite unusual in Japan. Since 2004, more and more grass root groups have built up in other japanese cities and diverse sub groups have emerged like the Kyabakura Union or the Gas Station Union, which are organised inside the General Freeter Union. Through the Union, the Freeters are able to collectively defend their survival and support and empower themselves through direct actions against unfair working conditions and bad bosses and solidarity with each other. /// http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeter *Freeter* (フリーター *furītā*?<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Installing_Japanese_character_sets>) (other possible spellings are *furītā*, *furiita*, *freeta*, *furiitaa*, or * furitaa*) is a Japanese <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_language> expression for people between the ages of 15 and 34 who lack full time employment or are unemployed, excluding housewives<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Housewife> and students. The term originally included young people who deliberately chose not to become salary-men <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salaryman>, even though jobs were available at the time. Freeters may also be described as *underemployed<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underemployed> * or freelance <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freelance> workers. These people do not start a career after high school or university, but instead earn money from low skilled and low paid jobs. The low income makes it difficult for freeters to start a family, and the lack of qualifications makes it difficult to start a career at a later point in life. Freeters have sometimes been described as people pursuing their dreams and trying to live life to the fullest http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeter Les *freeter* sont un phénomène relativement récent au Japon.

Socrates in the movie ‘Peaceful Warrior’. Dan Millman, a university student and promising gymnast, has his heart set on winning the National Championship. He has a chance encounter with an old man – Socrates – who becomes his life coach and guru. Socrates teaches him the value of being present every moment and enjoying the beauty that life unfolds in front of us every second. Sometimes the lessons are difficult. Amidst his love-hate relationship with Socrates, Dan breaks his leg while driving his motorbike recklessly. His doctor has to insert a metal rod into his leg merely for him to walk. The doctor and his coach give him the bad news: he will not compete in gymnastics again. Socrates disagrees. His persistence with Dan – showing him that his accident could actually be a great blessing – helps the young athlete regain his confidence and determination.... Fwd: disobedience archive

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Gediminas Urbonas <urbonas(a)mit.edu> Date: Sun, Dec 11, 2011 at 12:53 AM Subject: disobedience archive To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> feel free to forward this further: disobedience: * *an ongoing video archive* *December 9, 2011–February 3, 2012 E14 Media Lab Complex Lobby MIT program in Art, Culture, and Technology Schedule of events: Exhibition Talk: Mel King, Julie K Stone, Marco Scotini, Glorianna Davenport Friday * *December 9, 4–5 PM E15-001 ACT Cube 20 Ames Street Cambridge, MA, USA Opening Reception: Friday December 9, 5-8 PM E14 Media Lab Complex Lobby 75 Amherst Street* *Cambridge, MA, USA Curated by: Marco Scotini together with Nomeda & Gediminas Urbonas* *Assistant curator: Andris Brinkmanis Display System by US: Urbonas Studio Disobedience Archive brings together a series of practices and forms of individual self-representation just as they are finding the key to their strength in an alliance of art and activism: a transformation in the languages that society produces as a political subject and as a media object. What matters in Disobedience is not so much an ‘alliance’ between activist demands and artistic practices in order to achieve common goals: it is more that of a common space or a common base that is emerging. This space is not clearly defined, thus making it impossible to draw a precise line between forces and signs, between language and labor, between intellectual production and political action. It functions through a display of the archive format, in which all the materials on show share the same level of equivalence – without hierarchies and without exhibiting any preordained set of institutional rules. It is up to the public to choose and to organize their vision of the available material: turning the archive into a toolkit ready for use. The Disobedience Archive has been organized and exhibited in many different venues across the World since 2005. In the installation at the Lobby of the Media Lab Complex at MIT the Disobedience will expand to include cases of political and artistic action that have manifested in the geographic and historical terrain of Boston. In addition to this, new student works that critically interrogate concepts of Disobedience (produced in the research seminars, Art, Architecture, and Urbanism in Dialogue and Introduction to Networked Cultures and Participatory Media), will be exhibited in conversation with the pre-existing body of works that comprise the archive. Here, the archive itself will take the form of a garden “corridor” arranged on an axis that disrupts the traditional logic of the existing space and makes an allusion to the spatial and urban politics, from community gardens to self-reliant tent cities, that have characterized many instances of activism in the Boston area. Material provided to the archive by: 16beaver group, Atelier d’Architecture Autogérée (AAA), Gianfranco Baruchello, Bernardette Corporation, Black Audio Film Collective, Copenhagen Free University, Critical Art Ensemble, Dodo Brothers (Andrea Ruggeri and Giancarlo Vitali Ambrogio), Etcètera, Marcelo Exposito, Harun Farocki and Andrei Ujica, Grupo de Arte Callejero (GAC), Alberto Grifi, Ashley Hunt, Kanal B, Margit Czencki/Park Fiction, Radio Alice, Oliver Ressler with Zanny Begg, Joanne Richardson, Eyal Sivan, Hito Steyerl, The Department of Space and Land Reclamation (with StreetRec., The Institute for Applied Autonomy, Las Agencias and AffectTech/BikeWriters), Mariette Schiltz and Bert Theis, Ultra Red, Nomeda & Gediminas Urbonas, James Wentzy, Dmitry Vilensky and Chto delat / What is to be done?
