Fwd: Cashless transactions: Greeks’ creative crisis solution

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kevin Carson <free.market.anticapitalist(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Nov 1, 2011 at 1:45 AM Subject: Cashless transactions: Greeks’ creative crisis solution To: "free. market. anticapitalist" <free.market.anticapitalist(a)gmail.com> Sent to you by Kevin Carson via Google Reader: Cashless transactions: Greeks’ creative crisis solution<http://trustcurrency.blogspot.com/2011/10/cashless-transactions-greeks-crea…> via Trust is the Only Currency <http://trustcurrency.blogspot.com/> by Mira Luna on 10/31/11 >From Question More <http://rt.com/news/greek-creative-crisis-solution-841/> 27 October, 2011 Whether the EU anti-crisis plan is effective or not, for the austerity-hit Greek people a creative solution could be the answer to some of their problems. In a country where cash is in short supply, time has taken on a whole different value. They same time is money, and now it’s being used as a currency in an emerging barter system developed by cash-strapped Greeks who want to swap goods and services. “In the Time Bank we exchange voluntary services.Sometimes I give painting lessons for free but I take yoga for free also,” says Niki Roubani of the Bank of Voluntary Time project. “It’s huge, it’s everything we do without money. It’s looking after people and making things ourselves.” The Time Bank is just one of a growing number of service-swapping alternatives that are providing people in Greece with an imaginative way to cope with the tough economic conditions. Tsakalotos Efklidis, an economics professor, says a financial crisis can have terrible and divisive consequences for society. “[It divides] public sector workers from private sector workers, it divides richer workers to poorer workers, immigrant workers from home workers. And that’s a terrible thing,” he said. For a country in crisis, building social unity can be an uphill struggle. However, the barter networks have proven a great way of bringing together large groups of people. A popular slogan in Greece now is, "No-one's alone in the crisis." Organizations are arranging swap-shops to exchange clothes, and one town in Greece has even started its own barter currency. “We still have the memory of an agricultural society in Greece, where people used to do things together. They would harvest the olive tree of my family this week and then the next week we do the olive trees of your family. So they would exchange services – and people like that,” says Niki Roubani. Nikki gives her friend Alexandra, who is also a member of the time bank, an art lesson. In exchange, Alexandra helps Nikki with the gardening, and the time is repaid. “It’s an amazing way of receiving by giving to others,” says Alexandra. As many Greeks struggle with wage cuts and tax increases, and with unemployment in the country now cripplingly high, there has been huge interest in the time banks and barter networks. No wonder the idea of swapping goods and services has proven so popular – it is building solidarity at a time when the economic situation is extremely uncertain. Whilst these barter networks will not solve Greece’s financial problems, they do provide a massive amount of help and support for the participants. “It’s not a response to the crisis, in the sense that it’s going to overturn the government, but it’s giving support and comfort to those who would like to overturn the terrible economic policies that are being imposed by the Troika. It’s giving people support to feel that they can do something,” says Tsakalotos Efklidis. While these tough economic times are leaving many Greeks feeling worthless, there is real value in projects like the time bank. With the Greek government drowning in debt, these creative solutions are offering not only support but also encouragement to the people here, which at a time of deep economic recession, are proving priceless commodities. Debt Write-Off
by Natalie Golovin 11 Nov '11

11 Nov '11

Ron Paul suggested this approach re US Debt months ago. It was picked up (positively) by Yves on Naked Capitalism & a major (quality )magazine. Of course, it disappeared with no further mention due to media and academic dismissal of all things RP. Please resurrect this plan within the context of your Euro efforts. Taxpayers don’t need to pay interest on debt they owe themselves. Thanks, Natalie Golovin Irvine, CA

Fwd: "Occupy Comics Kickstarter project"
by Michel Bauwens 11 Nov '11

11 Nov '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Nov 11, 2011 at 4:39 PM Subject: "Occupy Comics Kickstarter project" To: econowmix(a)googlegroups.com http://www.wired.com/underwire/2011/11/occupy-comics-kickstarter-campaign-r… ( Via Erminio ) - Pasted Below What do we want? Funding! How will we get it? Comics! That’s the goal of the *Occupy Comics* Kickstarter project<http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1817933359/occupy-comics-art-stories-in…>, launched Wednesday by transmedia studioHalo-8 <http://halo8.tv/> and explained in the video pitch below. The plan is to graphically document the Occupy movement <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupy_movement> with the help of a roster of respected comics creators and artists, then funnel the proceeds directly to the protesters taking hits and making history for the 99 percent. “Comics is at the root of this thing,” Halo-8 founder and*Occupy Comics*<http://occupycomics.com/2011/10/11/the-blueprint> organizer Matt Pizzolo said in an e-mail to Wired.com. “Just look at Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s *V for Vendetta <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_for_Vendetta>* masks at every protest. A Guy Fawkes mask is now a more iconic image of street protest than a gas mask.” *Occupy Comics* contributor Molly Crabapple <http://mollycrabapple.com/>, whose work can be seen above and below, lives a block from Zuccotti Park, where the Occupy Wall Street movement got its start. She said she visits the site, where hundreds of people have encamped to protest economic inequality, almost daily. “It’s a beautiful community, almost a mini-city, complete with library, kitchen, free store, coffee, compost and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream scooped out by Ben himself,” Crabapple told Wired.com in an e-mail. “But the media wasn’t portraying this. So I started drawing the protesters to show the diversity down at Zuccotti. Later, I did more blatantly political work in response to attacks on unions and police brutality in Oakland<http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/nov/04/occupy-oakland-second-veteran-i…> .” Occupy Comics’ overall plan is pretty simple, which is how Pizzolo wants to keep it, in the interests of transparency. But some workarounds have been needed. “You can’t fund-raise for charity on Kickstarter; you can only use it to fund a creative project,” Pizzolo said. “So Kickstarter itself is funding the creation of a hardcover anthology graphic novel about the protests, and through that everyone is being paid, then donating their pay to the protesters.” The longer version is that *Occupy Comics* contributors Steve Niles, Joshua Dysart, Douglas Rushkoff, J.M. DeMatteis and many more are creating art inspired by the protest movement and compiling it into an extensive art book in the tradition of similar releases like *Peace Signs: The Anti-War Movement Illustrated<http://www.amazon.com/Peace-Signs-Anti-War-Movement-Illustrated/dp/32830048…> *and *Green Patriot Posters: Images for a New Activism<http://www.wired.com/underwire/2010/11/green-patriot> *. Artists and execs donate all pay and profits to assist with the occupiers’ amenities and necessities. The revolution is visualized when *Occupy Comics*‘ limited-edition anthology arrives in mid-2012. Pizzolo said the project makes sense because the Occupy Wall Street movement was launched by a piece of art. ‘We’re all connected in the cloud now, and you can’t fight that with pepper spray.’ “*Adbusters* created a really powerful image of a ballerina atop the Wall Street bull <http://www.adbusters.org/content/ballerina-and-bull> with protesters in the background, and that was enough to set this off,” he said. “Then Anonymous <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_%28group%29> brought in the Guy Fawkes masks, and U.S. Day of Rage <http://usdayofrage.org/> created more art challenging the relationship between Wall Street and Washington. So this is an art-inspired movement, and that’s part of what makes it so viral. It’s not intellectual, it doesn’t need a manifesto. People are banding together around an idea, rather than an ideology.” That band is heavily fortified by technology and social networking, which continues to sustain the Occupy movement and increase its support. While the protesters are consumed with everything from corporate personhood<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporate_personhood> to the widening gap between the rich and the poor<http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/28/income-gap-widens-census-_n_741386…>, they are taking their concerns to Twitter and Facebook as well as the streets, using the internet to mobilize and inform the movement’s ranks. “During the late-’90s globalization protests<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Trade_Organization_Ministerial_Conferenc…>, which were about many of the same issues, we had to be brought into a group and trained in protest methodologies,” said Pizzolo. “But when I stepped into Zuccotti Park for the first time, I had all the information I needed just by following Twitter. We’re all connected in the cloud now, and you can’t fight that with pepper spray. This movement is about art and technology connecting people. That’s new, and really exciting.” -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens
