---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Mary Beth Steisslinger <marybeth.steisslinger(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, Nov 13, 2011 at 11:44 AM Subject: 11-11-11 at Occupy Pgh To: Mary Beth Steisslinger <marybeth.steisslinger(a)gmail.com> Cc: threeriversbioneers(a)googlegroups.com Hello Friends of the Three Rivers Bioregion, I spent a chilly and eventful night and a beautiful sunny morning at Occupy Pittsburgh with my daughter Maddie, a friend of her's from 8th grade at CAPA, and her father who happens to be a tent owner at OP. We ate fabulous soup provided by Soup Goddess, Maritza Mosquera, and lots of other provisions like cupcakes, hot cocoa, chili and apples from the nice folk's at OP's kitchen. We slept in the back "family room" of the art tent... we came prepared so we were warm and well padded on the damp and chilly ground. I got to know some of the folks there who are helping with security, no alcohol or drugs tolerated on OP's site. The folks in the info tent were handing out flyers for two upcoming demonstrations, and they told me of the Buddhist meditation to be held on-site at noon the next day. We went to help with making signs & posters (some absolutely hilarious) for the upcoming rally on Tues afternoon when Halliburton will be in town highlighting their hi-profit fracking activities on our lands. We watched as Marcellus Protest and friends practiced a flash mob event to expose Halliburton's greed and destruction (go Suz South, Etta Cetera, Terry Suppowitz, Elizabeth Donohoe! and many more:-) We helped to reorganize the well-stocked but small art tent (people can use the next door T-stop to spread out under cover if anyone need lots of creative space)... we also created some fun additions to the circular fence sign wall at the heart of OP's site. Later that night, actually in the wee early hours, during a trip to one of the surprisingly clean donated latrines, i ran into a friend who was part of the late-night patrol team. We talked for a half hour or so (until my teeth started chattering), and i heard the hope and the fear in his voice. He was saying how he felt this was a huge opportunity for America and the World to truly change things, and that we cannot be daunted by the petty and the personality. He said he was proud of Pittsburgh for occupying corporate land and keeping things non-violent, but we must figure out how to focus more on action... for securing the life of the camp and making outreach/ education/ protests/ creative actions meaningful to the rest of the 99%. He said two of OP's greatest needs are for more people to commit to larger roles in OP operation groups (including living as part of the camp community as much as possible), and good neutral facilitators and moderators for General Assembly and other larger meetings. So overall it was a worthwhile and enjoyable night, and the truth is it's a really hard thing that our fellow 99% Occupiers are trying to do down there. It's a microcosm of America. With all our humanity exposed... an open society where no one is turned away unless they break the few strict rules the community needs to ensure common security and mutual respect. These people are doing something most of us can not even consider, and they need our support, whatever we can give. The Winter is coming. Direct democracy is continual hard work. Grab a friend, go down there, and make more friends. Let me know if you want to camp out as i'm looking to hang out there numerous times this Winter with my daughter Maddie and friends. So here's three OP things you can consider: see details below, and check the *Upcoming Events* calendar for daily updates - http://www.occupypittsburgh.org/content/welcome-occupypittsburghorg 1. Listening Project at Occupy Pgh, ongoing... Great effort, gotta love those Quakers from the American Friends Service Committee! 2. Halliburton Protest: This Tues, 5:15 pm, March leaves from OP http://www.occupypittsburgh.org/content/stop-fracking-occupy-dug-east (come early if you want to make a sign in the Art tent... artists needed before each event to help make signs lively... Maddie was great at this!) 3. Occupy the Greenfield Bridge on Nov. 17th! It is also a place where people are living in very close quarters, it is now cold and often wet, there is constant noise of traffic, heating units and the sounds of the city all around them. People are coming and going and you don’t always know who your neighbor in the camp will be from one day to the next.**** ** ** All of this leads to tension and sometimes stress. It is helpful to have someone who is not part of the everyday camp environment to be able to talk to as a way of defusing some of the tension.**** ** ** AFSC PA program is setting up Friendly Ears at the camp. We will provide a training in respectful listening techniques and set up a schedule for listening. We are suggesting that people be available to give a couple of hours in the early evening to be available to listen. We are hoping to schedule enough people to cover each day and for a person to only have to be available every two weeks.**** ** ** If you are interested in being part a Friendly Ear please contact me at swahrhaftig(a)afsc.org or (412) 371 3607.**** ** ** ________________________________________________________________ 2. Fwd: Introduction to Socioeconomic Democracy
by Michel Bauwens 12 Nov '11

12 Nov '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Rob George <georgecsds(a)aol.com> Date: Sat, Nov 12, 2011 at 12:26 PMRob George Center for the Study of Democratic Societies <http://www.centersds.com/> ~~~~~ We respectfully desire to introduce you to Socioeconomic Democracy, an advanced socioeconomic system which can and eventually will significantly help to realize your, and eventually all humanity's, legitimate thirst for universal justice, democracy, peace and well being. We commit to being available to you for any assistance, clarification, further general development, and specific application you may desire and request. We further emphasize that there are many required changes to existing politico-socio-economic systems. One is the definition of money and wealth, and another is the distribution of same. Happily noting that there are a number of thoughtful contributors in our group to the first area of necessary improvement, this particular discussion considers the second. The purpose of this Introduction to the work of the Center for the Study of Democratic Societies is twofold. First, it is to inform (or acknowledge agreement with) you that there are indeed rational, just, democratic, and peacefully realizable solutions to the world’s increasingly painful, unjust and unnecessary societal problems. Secondly, it is to invite you to participate in the democratic resolution of these unnecessary interlinked problems. As John Kenneth Galbraith laconically observed, “The conventional view serves to protect us from the painful job of thinking.” Yet the mishmash of conventional views, both amateur(ish) and professional(ish), is increasingly being seen and acknowledged to be the root cause of society’s needless and costly pain. The incompatible clamor for reduction of national, state, regional and municipal monetary debt, while insisting upon the provision of increased necessary governmental services for the already rich or hapless poor; the demand for reduced local crime and killings with “cost-saving” and "deficit-reduction" police layoffs, while tolerating/advocating increased global crime and killings with mercenary/military-industrial buildup; the plethora of unearned bonuses of nearsighted Banksters and brutal bludgeoning of necessary Budgets; the crescendo of cries for “unregulated” personal profit possibilities attempting to drown out the chorus seeking safe working conditions in dangerous, life-threatening and life-killing employment; the demand for more jobs, while neglecting the onslaught of economically efficient (and profitable, for whom?) technological advancement; the truly sad yet farcical salary conflicts between private and public sector wage earners, unionize or otherwise, surreptitiously encouraged by the economically comfortable who, equipped with "theoretically justifying Economics Texts" care about the welfare of neither; the increasingly familiar statistic that the “top” 1% of most any population controls more wealth than the “bottom” 90%, serving as a point of pride for a non-thinking citizenry of a laudably self-interested society espousing a contempt for a meaningful minimum wage; the increasing quibble between those who claim raising the retirement age and those who suggest reducing the retirement age can "help" solve the “lack of jobs” problem, while neither side considers either the advancement in automation or the rape and reduction in natural resources; the impossibility of unlimited growth on a limited planet; the so-called "Offshoring of jobs and personal/corporate profits; the unconscionable Acts of Empire; the obscene acts of unconscious politicians and on and on, all add to the confusion and deadly conflict of humanity. Unexpected (by some) or otherwise (by others), and certainly right on cue, the enigmatic (to some) and perfectly understandable (to others), global #OWS respectfully and emphatically struggles to present and facilitate the necessity and inevitability of Fundamental Global Change. Clear and unambiguous definition of these and numerous other critical matters is, of course, essential, if meaningful progress is to be realized. The definition of Socioeconomic Democracy, an advanced, fundamentally just and democratic socioeconomic system follows. It is on the basis of this definition of Socioeconomic Democracy that a straightforward politico-socio-economic Platform can be and has been articulated. It is further the case that this Democratic Socioeconomic Platform has been adopted by a presently existing political party and is now being considered for adoption by other peacefully progressive political parties about the globe. *Socioeconomic Democracy* is a theoretically consistent and practically implementable socioeconomic system wherein there exist both some form and amount of locally appropriate *Universally Guaranteed Personal Income* and some form and amount of locally appropriate *Maximum Allowable Personal Wealth*, with both the lower bound on personal material poverty and the upper bound on personal material wealth *set and adjusted democratically by all participants of that democratic society*. As described at length elsewhere, Socioeconomic Democracy both creates economic incentive and provides necessary monetary funds to cause significant reduction in an almost surprisingly diverse array of unnecessary yet painful and deadly individual, societal and global problems. These problems are produced by currently inadequate, inaccurate and/or inconsistent assumptions, theories and practices of contemporary Economics and Politics. These unnecessary problems can be eliminated by a thoughtful and resolute application of meaningful Democracy. These intimately intertwined problems include (but are by no means limited to) those familiar ones associated with: automation, computerization and robotization; budget deficits and national debts; bureaucracy; maltreatment of children; crime and punishment; development (sustainable or otherwise); ecology, environment, resources and pollution; education; the elderly; the feminine majority; inflation; international conflict; intranational conflict; involuntary employment; involuntary unemployment; labor strife and strikes; sick medical and health care; military metamorphosis; natural disasters; pay justice; planned obsolescence; political participation; poverty; racism; sexism; untamed technology; and the General Welfare. Memorably expressing his mixed emotions regarding the troubling topic, Sir Winston did indeed observe "[T]hat democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others that have been tried." From Aeons before Churchill to this day, humans and their ancestors have grappled with the virtues and vices of tyrannies and "class warfare" imposed by individual dictators, small groups of elites, sizable minorities, and large majorities. A successfully functioning Democracy requires, by definition, at least a majority of informed and thoughtful citizens participating in the political process in a wide variety of ways, ranging from essential theoretical developments to myriad practical activities. Those interested in contributing, in any sense, to the further development and realization of the ideas and benefits presented here, which are applicable throughout the world, are urged to get in contact with us, when you are ready. We further wish to reiterate our desire and determination to collaborate with all other individuals and organizations committed to all the other necessary aspects of the general survival and healthy developmental challenge confronting the human race. Fwd: The Creative Commons is to Free Culture what Shareware is to Free Software
by Michel Bauwens 12 Nov '11

12 Nov '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dmytri Kleiner/ Friends. <dk(a)telekommunisten.net> Date: Tue, Nov 8, 2011 at 6:30 PM Subject: The Creative Commons is to Free Culture what Shareware is to Free Software To: "Dmytri Kleiner/ Friends. Subscriber" <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> (Mailing list information, including unsubscription instructions, is located at the end of this message.) __ IMPORTANT: Stammtisch today is at C-Base. We will not be at Cafe Buchhandlung this evening. In the meantime, please enjoy today's Text: The Creative Commons is to Free Culture what Shareware is to Free Software Back in the early days of computers proprietary software developers had a problem. Often working from home or small-offices, far removed from their potential customers, there was no easy way to sell software to their customers. One common way was to use classified adds in computer magazines, but unless a software title was very well known, it was difficult to convince customers to pay for it before they had the opportunity to try it and verify that it does what they need it to. Yet, the very emerging of computers had the solution embedded into the very technology, users where already distributing software on their own, by way of exchanging floppy disks, uploading software to Bulletin Board Systems or Online Services, or even printing out source code so that others could rekey it on their own computer. However, this practice was directly contradictory to the way commercial software was sold: paid for in advance and sold in a box in a store or by mail order. To prevent such unauthorized distribution, commercial software was often distributed on copy-protected media that used various cryptographic and obscurity techniques to prevent it's users from distributing on it's own. This was "All Rights Reserved" software, the published insisted on you buying it from them or their contracted resellers, and not, under any circumstances, share it with others. In the same way that commercial art, movies, music and books, for instance is "All Rights Reserved," it's publishers want you to buy it directly from their or their agents, and never share it with others, and likewise, the rights being reserved are the publisher's rights. Yet, the very technology that made a recorded music industry possible, mechanical reproduction, also made it possible for its users to share it. Starting from home-taping to today's online social platforms, fans of certain artists actively share with each others. And just like the commercial software authors, the music industry has availed itself to a wide variety of tactics to prevent this, from legal and political intimidation, to all sorts of cockamamie "Digital Rights Management" techniques. Yet, this "All Rights Reserved" business practice was well and good for well-funded publishers who where able to afford effective advertising and build out large-scale distribution networks, yet for both smaller artist and smaller commercial software vendors, such a system worked agains them, and they turned to ways of using users' sharing with other as means to find their audience and customers. In the software world this manifested as "Shareware" and in cultural production this manifested as the "Creative Commons." Both these movements developed as system of "Some Rights Reserved," granting users the ability to share with each other, but restricting them according to the will of the publisher, common restrictions in both cases included non-derivate clauses, and non-commercial clauses, effectively preventing consumers from becoming producers, meaning that the publishers where eager to use consumer sharing as a means to build the value of their property, but wanted to make sure that their status as producer was maintained, that all creative and commercial use of their work was restricted only to them, that their consumers would remain consumers, instrumental only as casual distributors. Reading both the Shareware and the Creative Commons licenses, there was no confusion over whose rights where being reserved, the publishers claimed all rights, and denied all responsibilities. The consumers' rights where not mentioned, except in efforts to limits any they might have. Meanwhile, at the same time at the radical fringes of cultural production, and in the quickly expanding belly of information technology, a more revolutionary way of thinking existed. Artists and Software users felt constrained by the restrictions on their ability to be creative and productive with the culture and software they had, from the poet Comte de Lautreamont's call for a poetry written by all, to Richard Stallman's call for a computer operating system written by all, free culture and free software where concerned with the rights of the consumer, not the producer. Or even more to point, concerned with abolishing the distinction between producer and consumer, understanding culture and technology to be a mutually constructed wealth, the value of which becomes more rich the more people contribute to it. The use of the word "Share" in Shareware and the use of the word "Commons" in Creative Commons share a misleading disingenuousness, they seem to imply common cause with the consumers, but no less than "All Rights Reserved," "Some Rights Reserved" is designed to enclose the consumer, to make sure they can not become the producer. "Some Rights Reserved" allows consumers to contribute to the value of the producers' product as promoter and distributor, but not the share in the value, which, far from being "common," remains the sole property of the producer. Free Culture and Free Software attempt to prefigure communities that truly share in common. -- The following information is a reminder of your current mailing list subscription: You are subscribed to the following list: Dmytri Kleiner/ Friends. using the following email: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com You may unsubscribe from this list at any time by visiting the following URL: http://freshsent.info/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/u/friends/michelsub2004/gmail.c… If the above URL is inoperable, make sure that you have copied the entire address. Bill Black at #Occupy L.A. video
by ideasinc＠ee.net 12 Nov '11

12 Nov '11

Bill Black is a extraordinary speaker, imo, clear, direct, empirical, and intelligent. In that he holds a dual posting at the University of Missouri at Kansas City in both the Law School and in the Economics Department is not an accident. His pursuit of the dysfunctionals of the banking sector, both as a regulator and as a professor is part of the reform in MMT monetary reform and the regulation of the dys-functional as per Functional Finance. In this context I have yet to see anyone anywhere promoting the lesser forms of community currencies and exchanges, which I will not list here, in all the possible breathlessness applied in promoting these "community alternatives" I have yet to see even a single clause recognizing the massive potential for fraud within the nominal "alternative" category. There simply are no standards whatsoever relative to transparency or accountability. This is the Ronald Reagan/Margaret Thatcher version of opening access to fraud under the pretense of higher principles, TINA. It seems that this is an "alternative" version of a TINA assertion, presented as a recitation of various mantras as "community, " "Free!," ALTERNATIVE," and then multiple attempts to compartmentalize the perpetration of fraud. As I referenced way earlier The US had a period of monetary history which became known as the "Free Banking" era. By most measures it was a major fiscal disaster, levels of fraud had not been exceeded from that era up until the late 1980'a and the beginnning of the US Savings and Loan crisis which Black was a lead prosecutor Tadit . http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=N_AuvLTJNh0

Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Turncoat EU Parliament Gives Up on Defending Free Wireless Communications
by Michel Bauwens 12 Nov '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <jz(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Wed, Nov 9, 2011 at 6:26 PM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Turncoat EU Parliament Gives Up on Defending Free Wireless Communications To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: http://www.laquadrature.net/en/turncoat-eu-parliament-gives-up-on-defending… Turncoat EU Parliament Gives Up on Defending Free Wireless Communications *** Paris, November 9th, 2011 — In discussions on the future of wireless communications policies, the EU Parliament is giving in to Member States by accepting a watered-down version [1] of the Radio Spectrum Policy Programme. Last Spring, the Parliament had made very constructive proposals in favour of open spectrum policies, calling [2] for citizen-controlled wireless communications. Sadly, the first major effort to harmonise spectrum policy in Europe is being held back by EU governments' conservatism and the Parliament's surrender. *** On Thursday, the EU Parliament's Industry committee (ITRE) is expected to finalise debates on the first European Radio Spectrum Policy Programme [3], by accepting national governments' bad amendments [4] to the text. Member States are refusing any binding EU-wide policy to free up radio waves and encourage citizen uses of the spectrum. [5] By doing so, they are holding back real competition, intense innovation, and enhanced wireless access to the Internet. The obvious beneficiaries of such government control over this crucial public resource are dominant telecom operators, who will be able to consolidate their control on airwaves. The Parliament entered negotiations with a strong call in favour of opening up spectrum to innovators and entrepreneurs. In the Spring, MEPs had adopted [6] important amendments calling the Commission and Member States to authorise the creation of “super Wi-Fi” networks by giving unlicensed access [7] to so-called “white spaces” (bands of frequencies left unused by broadcasters [8]). This would have allowed for more affordable and open wireless Internet access, which is currently undermined by the harmful restrictions imposed by telecom operators [9]. “As the European Council proposed a bad compromise, the Parliament didn't fight and gave in, renouncing to defend citizens' interest. Just as the United States moves closer to establishing a comprehensive framework for open wireless communications [10], the EU will be lagging behind because of the Parliament's lack of political courage and our governments' conservatism. The EU is missing an opportunity to foster the development of a decentralised wireless Internet, boost innovation and help bridge the digital divide, and instead plays into the hands of dominant telecom operators who attempt to control wireless communications.”, said Félix Tréguer, policy and legal analyst for La Quadrature du Net. * References * 1. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: seth weiss <weiss_seth(a)hotmail.com> Date: Sat, Nov 12, 2011 at 11:50 AM Subject: New book: "The Failure of Capitalist Production" To: newspacegroup newspacegroup <newspacegroup(a)lists.mutualaid.org> New SPACE friends, An important new book by Andrew Kliman has just been published. Please have a look! Take care, Seth *THE FAILURE OF CAPITALIST PRODUCTION* *Underlying Causes of the Great Recession* by Andrew Kliman Paperback / 256 pp. / ISBN-13: 978-0745332390. Published by Pluto Press, November 2011. * * *Only $23.40 from MHI + $3.60 shipping in U.S. -- below Amazon's price (foreign purchasers: please contact MHI for rates).* *Order here: http://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/ economic-crisis/new-book-the-failure-of-capitalist-production.html* The reasons behind the global financial crisis and the Great Recession are the subject of much debate. This is the first book to conclude, on the basis of in-depth analyses of official U.S. data, that Marx’s crisis theory can explain these events. Marx believed that the rate of profit has a tendency to fall, leading to economic crises and recessions. Many economists, Marxists among them, have dismissed this theory out of hand, but Andrew Kliman’s careful data analysis shows that the rate of profit did indeed decline after the post-World War II boom. He shows that free-market policies have failed to reverse that decline. This fall in profitability led to sluggish investment and economic growth, mounting debt problems, desperate attempts of governments to fight these problems by piling up even more debt – ultimately ending in the Great Recession. Kliman's conclusion is simple but shocking: short of socialist transformation, the only way to escape the “new normal” of a stagnant, crisis-prone economy is to restore profitability through full-scale destruction of the value of existing capital assets, something not seen since the Depression of the 1930s. .** * * *Endorsements:* “Clear, rigorous and combative. Kliman demonstrates that the current economic crisis is a consequence of the fundamental dynamic of capitalism, unlike the vast bulk of superficial contemporary commentary that passes for economic analysis.” * **– Rick Kuhn, Deutscher Prize winner, Reader in Politics at the Australian National University* “Among the myriad publications on the present day crisis, this work stands out as something unusual. Kliman cogently argues against the view that the crisis is ultimately rooted in financialization. He is an excellent theorist, and an equally excellent analyst of empirical data.” * **– Paresh Chattopadhyay, Université du Québec à Montréal* “One of the very best of the rapidly growing series of works seeking to explain our economic crisis. … The scholarship is exemplary and the writing is crystal clear. Highly recommended!” *– Professor Bertell Ollman, New York University, author of Dance of the Dialectic* * * *Chapters:* 1. Introduction 2. Profitability, the Credit System, and the “Destruction of Capital” 3. Double, Double, Toil and Trouble: Dot-com boom and home-price bubble 4. The 1970s––Not the 1980s––as Turning Point 5. Falling Rates of Profit and Accumulation 6. The Current-cost “Rate of Profit” 7. Why the Rate of Profit Fell 8.The Underconsumptionist Alternative 9. What Is to Be Undone? Fw: Improvised Artwhistling. A New P2P Foundation Entry for the Music Section?

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: robert searle <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> To: "dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk" <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Saturday, 12 November 2011, 10:08 Subject: Improvised Artwhistling. In the context of this entry, Artwhistling can be seen as whistling of a high professional quality. If heard by chance it would be very difficult to determine whether it is whistling, or indeed, a wind instrument being played in a "beauteous" manner. Improvised Artwhistling is another dimension which like Improvised Voice Instrumental Music is to a large extent uncharted waters of musical creativity that may gain greater credence in time if the right performer, or performers appear. However, there is much material on Non-Improvised Artwhistling, or "good" whistling in general. What is perhaps surprising is that many people find it difficult, if not impossible to whistle well. As such whistling per se for "musical" entertainment should be seen as a serious, and credible musical exercise which is not easy as it may appear. The following is from Wikipedia... ........many performers on the music hall and Vaudeville circuits were professional whistlers, the most famous of which were Ronnie Ronalde and Fred Lowery. Both had several notable songs featuring whistling. Pucker whistling is the most common form of whistling used in most Western music. Typically, the tongue tip is lowered, often placed behind the lower teeth, and pitch altered by varying the position of the tongue. In particular, the point at which the tongue body approximates the palate varies from near the uvula (for low notes) to near the alveolar ridge (for high notes). Although varying the degree of pucker will change the pitch of a pucker whistle, expert pucker whistlers will generally only make small variations to the degree of pucker, due to its tendency to affect purity of tone. Pucker whistling can be done by either only blowing out or blowing in and out alternately . In the ' only blow out' method , a consistent tone is achieved but a negligible pause has to be taken to breathe in. In the alternating method there is no problem of breathlessness or interruption as breath is taken when one whistles breathing in . But a disadvantage of this method is that many a times , the consistency of tone is not maintained and it fluctuates. Many expert musical palatal whistlers will substantially alter the position of the lips to ensure a good quality tone. Venetian gondoliers are famous for moving the lips while they whistle in a way that can look like singing. A good example of a palatal whistler is Luke Janssen winner of the 2009 world whistling competition. The term puccalo refers to highly skilled jazz whistling. The most significant whistling competition is run by the International Whistlers Convention in North Carolina, UA. Held every year (recently every other has been in other countries), it brings together whistlers from all over the world who battle for the crown of 'International Grand Champion' Ref http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whistling Here, are some other links which maybe of interest.More maybe added. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=whistling&aq=f http://synthonia.org/artwhistling/guide/ Another site is orawhistle which has an excellent forum Orawhistle : Global Whistlers Forum - Groups - Yahoo International whistler discussion forum concerning whistling-related techniques, issues and events. Includes sound samples, how-to database, and a large ..groups.yahoo.com/group/Orawhistle/

View it in your browser.<http://us1.campaign-archive2.com/?u=311db31977054c5ef58219392&id=7c0963a52d…> Dear , I personally support the spirit of Occupy Wall Street, especially the spotlight it has cast on the shocking level of inequality in our country. But the movement oddly conveys a very mainstream message that Wall Street can and should be fixed. Just clean up our existing financial institutions – make them more accountable, honest, transparent – and all will be well. Really? I think it would be smarter to end our relationship with Wall Street. Just say “no.” There’s another 99% that begs our attention – the 99% of Americans who are not permitted to invest in local small business. A growing body of evidence suggests that these are the businesses that are essential for growing jobs, incomes, equality, entrepreneurship, smart-growth, and green communities. If we were to legalize investment in local businesses, including co-ops, farms, and community investment funds, Wall Street would be history. And the good news is that it’s on the verge of happening. *WANT TO HELP LEGALIZE LOCAL INVESTMENT? Then...* - Sign the Legalize Local Investment! petition<http://postcarbon.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=311db31977054c5ef582193…> - ask your Senators<http://postcarbon.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=311db31977054c5ef58219…>to support The Entrepreneur Access to Capital Act - Attend or support the Occupy SEC rally<http://postcarbon.us1.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=311db31977054c5ef58219…>on November 17th in Washington, D.C. For decades, we’ve lived under an oppressive system of investment apartheid. The 1% who are millionaires (known under federal securities law as “accredited investors”) are free to invest in anything they choose. With the referees in their back pockets and all kinds of home-court advantages, it’s easy for them to win the wealth-accumulating game. The other 99% of us are stuck with the slim pickings of the Fortune 500 public companies listed on Wall Street – the companies least connected to the well being of our communities. Before small businesses can accept investment from the 99%, they have to spend many tens of thousands of dollars on legal, accounting, and government filing fees. While most of us would like to invest in small businesses in our community, practically speaking, securities laws make it impossible. This is a far more extreme big-business bias than exists in banking, where we can easily move our money to local banks and credit unions. Worse, *we have four times more money in Wall Street investments – stocks, bonds, mutual funds, pension funds, and insurance funds – than we do in banks *. *We are the ones fueling the multinational companies we distrust.* If we could overhaul securities laws that we enacted during the early Jurassic Period, local businesses could be fabulous investments. They are the most important job producers in the economy. They account for more than half of private sector jobs. They are increasingly competitive – so much so that their their share of the national workforce actually growing. Stunningly, sole proprietorships are three times as profitable as C-corporations. For the first time in decades, reform is finally possible. A remarkable coalition has emerged bringing together leaders of the Tea Party and the Obama Administration. They agree<http://postcarbon.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=311db31977054c5ef582193…>that investment apartheid should be abolished. Republican Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina is leading the charge in the House to legalize small businesses raising money through large numbers of small investments (aka “crowdfunding”), with minimal paperwork, for companies raising less than $1 million. Recent changes in his bill (HR 2930, The Entrepreneur Access to Capital Act<http://postcarbon.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=311db31977054c5ef58219…>) actually make it very similar to reforms President Obama proposed in his jobs package in September. On November 3, HR 2930 passed the House with overwhelming support (407-17). But passage of crowdfunding legislation is still uncertain. Senate Republicans may be afraid to support anything that Obama has proposed as part of his jobs package. And many Democrats are defending the status quo, because they are understandably afraid of deregulating the financial industry. What Dems don’t appreciate, however, is that *the key to Wall Street reform is to ratchet up regulation at the top and loosen things a bit for the 99% at the bottom*. The Occupy Wall Street protestors could make a critical difference here. They – and we – should occupy Congress until they legalize local investment. Once that occurs, we’ll see thousands of small companies owned by their customers. We’ll see the emergence of local stock exchanges that will provide investors with liquidity. We’ll see mutual funds with local securities (none exist today), and local pension funds. Consider what happens when the first trillion dollars of our long-term savings move from Wall Street to Main Street. Stock prices of giant multinational public companies will go down, and the price of local business shares will go up. A stampede of investors moving their money could follow. We might quickly see the largest transfer of capital in human history, from increasingly untrustworthy Fortune 500 companies to the local businesses we care about. Millions of Americans have already changed their buying habits to buy local. Now’s our chance to invest locally too! My dream is to transform the place into a quaint Big Apple tourist site, where we can pay our respects to the mistakes of the 20th century that we thankfully stopped making in the 21st. *LEGALIZE LOCAL INVESTMENT* - Sign the Legalize Local Investment! petition<http://postcarbon.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=311db31977054c5ef582193…> - ask your Senators<http://postcarbon.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=311db31977054c5ef582193…>to support The Entrepreneur Access to Capital Act - Attend or support the Occupy SEC rally<http://postcarbon.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=311db31977054c5ef582193…>on November 17th in Washington, D.C.
