Fw: Last seats at the Conference & News - Update 14th Oct
by robert searle 14 Oct '11

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Positive Money <info(a)positivemoney.org.uk> To: Robert <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Friday, 14 October 2011, 14:04 Subject: Last seats at the Conference & News - Update 14th Oct Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. Dear Robert, It’s really exciting time now, people around the globe seem to start waking up and we can feel an increased interest about the “money issue” since the “Occupy Wall Street” movement started. It seems that time for money reform is getting closer… In this newsletter: 1) Conference 29th Oct – last seats 2) New book – Guide to Money 3) Positive Money New Zealand 4) HELP wanted – animator for the movie “97% owned” 5) Upcoming Meetups & Events 6) Latest from the Blog ----- 1) Conference "It's Our Money!" 29th Oct, LondonThere are last 20 seats available for booking. Don't get left behind - discover what the future of banking will look like, the reforms ahead and how you can make a difference. It may be the most important event you will attend this year. You’ll find out how your future relates to the future of banking, and more importantly what you can do about it. Book your seat here (we decided to leave the price at £20 for everyone) 2) Guide to Money “Where does money come from?”This brand new book is the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to how money is created ever published. It reveals that most of the textbooks are very much out of date. The basic analysis of this book is neither radical nor new. In fact, central banks around the world support the same description of where new money comes from. And yet many naturally resist the notion that private banks can really create money by simply making an entry in a ledger. This book aims to firmly establish a common understanding that commercial banks create new money. Foreword by Prof Charles Goodhart, one of the leading authorities in banking. You can order the book here 3) Positive Money New ZealandPositive Money will be launched next week on the opposite site of the globe – it’s based on Positive Money in UK and customised to the New Zealand situation. If you know people in New Zealand in the Wellington region you may want to send them the link to invitations to the launch of the campaign, which will be on 17th Oct: http://www.positivemoney.org.nz/includes/download.aspx?ID=117919 4) HELP wanted – animator for the movie “97% owned”97% owned is an upcoming feature documentary from the producers of Generation OS13. Including contributions from Positive Money's Ben Dyson, this documentary will present in a totally new way the monetary reform argument and pull apart the false complexity behind the money creation process. This film is taking 'Debt as Money' to the next level. The producers are looking for a talented animator to work on 15 short animation features explaining various aspects of the money creation process. Each clip will be 15-30 seconds long and you will have a broad creative input to the process, although the research information will be provided. This is an exciting opportunity to put your stamp on the film and play your part in monetary reform history. If you want to take part please e-mail mike(a)queuepolitely.com with a link to your showreel or website and he will be in touch. 5) Upcoming Meetups & EventsSheffield – Mon 17th Oct Plymouth – Wed 26th Oct Belfast – Wed 26th Oct Newcastle – Thu 27th Oct Canterbury/East Kent – Mon 31st Oct Glasgow – Tue 1st Nov – Talk by Ben Dyson Edinburgh – Wed 2nd Nov – Talk by Ben Dyson London – we plan the next meetup for November – we are looking for a venue for this. If you can recommend us a suitable one, it would be very much appreciated. It should be a venue with the possibility to do a talk and use the projector - for about 60 people - in central location – ideally a separate room in a pub or a venue with a pub (not noisy) very nearby where we could stay for drinks. If you know about something, please reply to: mira(a)positivemoney.org.uk If there is nothing happening in your area, you are welcome to organize a meetup. …apart from our Positive Money meetups, many events are now planned, where you might be interested to attend and participate: Sat 15th Oct - Occupy London Stock Exchange (Global Day of Action) Nov 5th – Bank Transfer Day -this is another Global Day of Action - remove your money from the big banks into more ethical banks on or by this date. Nov 9th – Students March on the City 6) Latest from the BlogChild Poverty on the Rise The World vs Wall Street Financial Crisis Is Worst the World Has Ever Had Rethinking Economic Growth You can help us challenge the power of big banks also by monthly donation (£5 / £10 / £20 or your own choice). With a lot of effort and a few pounds a month from enough people, we can actually get a banking system that helps society rather than harms it! THANKS to everyone who is already making a donation - this wouldn’t be possible without you. Fw: Euro Crisis Solution
by robert searle 14 Oct '11

14 Oct '11

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: George Soros <info(a)georgesoros.com> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Thursday, 13 October 2011, 18:49 Subject: Euro Crisis Solution Dear Friends and Colleagues, I thought you'd be interested in George's latest essay on the euro crisis, published online this morning in the Financial Times. If you are interested in reading the letter he refers to in the piece, you can find it here: http://www.AppealforEurope.org. All Best, Michael Vachon A routemap through the eurozone minefield By George Soros A group of almost 100 prominent Europeans delivered an open letter to the leaders of all 17 eurozone countries on Wednesday. The letter said, in so many words, what the leaders of Europe now appear to have understood: they cannot go on “kicking the can down the road”. The road has been blocked by the German constitutional court which has found the law establishing the European financial stability fund constitutional, but declared that no further transfers are allowed without Bundestag authorisation. The leaders have also understood that it is not enough to ensure that governments can finance their debt at reasonable interest rates, they must also do something about the banking system. Faced with the prospect of having to raise additional capital at a time when their shares are selling at a fraction of their book value, the eurozone’s banks have a powerful incentive to reduce their balance sheets by withdrawing credit lines and shrinking their loan portfolios. The banking and sovereign debt problems are mutually self reinforcing. The decline in government bond prices has exposed the banks’ undercapitalisation and the prospect that governments will have to finance recapitalisation has driven up risk premiums on government bonds. The financial markets are now anxiously waiting for the leaders’ next move. Greece clearly needs an orderly restructuring because a disorderly default could cause a meltdown. The next move will have fateful consequences. It will either calm the markets or drive them to new extremes. I am afraid that the leaders are contemplating some inappropriate steps. They are talking about recapitalising the banking system, rather than guaranteeing it. They want to do it country-by-country, rather than for the eurozone as a whole. There is a good reason for this. Germany does not want to pay for recapitalising the French banks. While Angela Merkel is justified in her insistence, it is driving her in the wrong direction. Let me stake out more precisely the narrow path that would allow Europe to pass through this minefield. The banking system needs to be guaranteed first and recapitalised later. National governments cannot afford to recapitalise the banks now. It would leave them with insufficient funds to deal with the sovereign debt problem. It will cost the governments much less to recapitalise the banks after the crisis has abated, and both government bonds and bank shares have returned to more normal levels. The governments can however, provide a guarantee that is credible because they have the power to tax. It will take a new legally-binding agreement for the eurozone to mobilise that power, and that will take time to negotiate and ratify. In the meantime, they can call upon the European Central Bank, which is already fully guaranteed by the member states on a pro-rata basis. To be clear, I am not talking about a change to the Lisbon Treaty but a new agreement. A treaty change would encounter too many hurdles. In exchange for a guarantee, the major banks would have to agree to abide by the instructions of the ECB. This is a radical step but necessary under the circumstances. Acting at the behest of the member states, the central bank has sufficient powers of persuasion. It could close its discount window to, and the governments could seize, the banks that refuse to co-operate. The ECB would then instruct the banks to maintain their credit lines and loan portfolios while strictly monitoring the risks they take for their own account. This would remove one of the main driving forces of the current market turmoil. The other driving force – the lack of financing for sovereign debt – could be dealt with by the ECB lowering its discount rate and encouraging countries in difficulties to issue treasury bills and prompting the banks to subscribe. The bills could be sold to the central bank at any time, so that it would count as cash. As long as they yield more than deposits with the ECB, the banks would find it advantageous to hold them. In this way, governments could meet their financing needs within agreed limits at very low cost during this emergency period, yet article 123 of the Lisbon Treaty would not be violated. I owe this idea to Tomasso Padoa Scioppa. These measures would be sufficient to calm markets and bring the acute phase of the crisis to an end. The recapitalisation of the banks should wait until then. Only the holes created by restructuring the Greek debt would have to be filled immediately. In conformity with the German demands, the additional capital would come first from the market and then from the individual governments. Only in case of need would the EFSF be involved. This would preserve the firepower of the fund. A new agreement for the eurozone, negotiated in a calmer atmosphere, should not only codify the practices established during the emergency but also lay the groundwork for a growth strategy. During the emergency period fiscal retrenchment and austerity are unavoidable. But the debt burden will become unsustainable without growth in the long term – and so will the European Union itself. This opens up a whole new set of difficult but not insurmountable problems. ***Please do not reply to this message. The move came as a protest against the imposed property tax. Already, hundreds of people in solidarity are gathered at the spot (247, Pireaus Avenue near Tauros). Already, the minister of development (Papakonstantinou, the ex-minister of Finance) has requested the intervention of an attorney general in order for the occupation to end. Meanwhile, the occupation of ministries and other public buildings is spreading wildly ahead of the General Strike of October 19th. As for the strikes: - There will be no public transportation in Athens on Thursday and Friday (at least), as all workers (except for the suburban railway) have called for a 48-h strike. - Taxi drivers have also called for a strike on Friday, and will decide future mobilisations on the day. - ADEDY (the civil servants union) has asked GSEE (the main reformist trade union) to turn Wednesday’s strike into a 48-hour one. - School teachers are holding a 48h strike next week (Wednesday and Thursday) and will call for rolling 5-day strikes thereafter. - Lawyers are abstaining from their duty from tomorrow (Thursday) until October 19 - Workers at the ministry of Finance have declared a 10-day strike, from October 17-27 - Custom duty workers have also called for a 10-day strike (October 14-24) - Workers at tax offices are striking between October 17-20 - Workers in banks are also striking between October 18-19 - All publicly-owned media workers are calling for a 48-hour strike from Thursday to Saturday - Museums and archaeological sites will be shut on Wednesday and Thursday due to the strike. - Workers at local prefectures and ports are also striking. All ports will be shut between October 17-19. ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
