Fwd: [gang8] Re: Pushing on a piece of string

Hi Chris, I wonder if you ever engaged with Modern Monetary Theory? Michel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Chris <cojock(a)hotmail.com> Date: Sat, Oct 8, 2011 at 5:19 PM Subject: [gang8] Re: Pushing on a piece of string To: gang8(a)yahoogroups.com ** Chris Perceptive and well argued as ever, but in our current system it is impossible to address a solvency problem with monetary measures. The reality is that 90% of the population are insolvent; illiquid or both, and there is a systemic shortage of purchasing power in the economy. That in turn is because for the last 30 years the rewards from productivity increases went principally to capital rather than labour. This long hidden recession was hidden by borrowing against inflated property prices, and the result is - as Michael Hudson eloquently points out - that 90% of people are in debt to the other 10%. Evidence of this transfer of wealth has been the secular decline in the retail deposits of the many and the growth of the wholesale deposits of the few: this decline gave us the Northern Rock business model; shadow banking and much else. All that raising interest rates will achieve is a further transfer of wealth - and purchasing power - from the productive 90% to the largely unproductive 10%. In my view the answer lies in the re-basing of credit directly upon the use value of productive assets ie direct 'Peer to Asset investment, and the implementation of 'Peer to Peer' credit clearing mechanisms between businesses and individuals subject to a mutual guarantee. Both mechanisms could be managed by service-providers-formerly-known-as-banks. For those with eyes to see, this trend to dis-intermediation is already well under way, as banks have been queuing up to originate and sell quasi-equity products to investors such as Exchange Traded Funds; Index Funds; Real Estate Investment trusts; Master Limited Partnerships and so on. The reason banks are doing this with such alacrity is that pretty much the only capital they need as a service/liquidity provider is that necessary to cover operating costs, and they can make money in all sorts of interesting ways via their 'Delta One' desks (cf the UBS disaster). There are two massive problems in this financial market Next Big Thing. Firstly, the inflow of risk averse (NOT speculative investment intent on transaction profit) money into commodity ETFs has financially inflated commodity prices in a correlated bubble. This has provided a windfall gain to the producers who accommodated the investors by financial leasing (ie sale and repurchase) of commodities to them via investment banks. So, generally via investment banks as intermediaries, funds lend dollars to producers who lend commodities to the funds. The cosmic joke here is that the 'inflation hedging' investors attempting to avoid loss are actually responsible for causing the very inflation they aim to avoid. Secondly, these largely risk averse investors are exposing themselves to a level of market risk which was never made clear to them other than deep in the boiler-plate agreements. The regulators are well aware that ETFs are a regulatory disaster zone about to trigger. I am essentially proposing - and prototyping - a new generation of such funds with the added innovation that the Units will be redeemable in payment for the underlying value. eg REIT units redeemable in payment for rentals, or energy ETFs redeemable in payment for energy. I believe that the existing system is terminally broken, but that the emergence of pervasive direct instantaneous connections is facilitating simple but radical new solutions which will dis-intermediate both governments and shareholders. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Fuster, Mayo <Mayo.Fuster(a)eui.eu> Date: Sun, Oct 9, 2011 at 8:54 AM Subject: [Commoning] Call - Building Digital Commons 29 & 30 October 2011 (Barcelona & online) To: "commoning(a)lists.wissensallmende.de" <commoning(a)lists.wissensallmende.de > Hola! I hope this is of the interest of commoners on this e-list! :-) Hopping many of you will join us on or off line. Cheers! Mayo (Please help to spread the word) ENGLISH, CATALAN, SPANISH VERSION Forum Building Digital Commons and Collaborative Communities 29th - 30th October 2011, Barcelona, Catalonia & Online http://www.digital-commons.net Building Digital Commons and Collaborative Communities is a new initiative aiming to bring together individuals, collective and organizations from different Free and Open Collaborative Communities, Digital Commons Initiatives and Researchers in the area to identify ways to support and learn from each other and collaborate in order to promote together digital commons. Why? The new technologies offered a big opportunity to create, innovate and collaborate to share and build information and knowledge resources. However, we are living challenging times, with an ongoing growth of the enclosure of the commons. i) We want to promote the “makers” and “ doers” approach: To increase the visibility of the initiatives that are based on building digital commons. ii) Systematize experiences & learn from each other (at the legal, infrastructural, sustainable, participation and governance levels). ii) Map the digital public spaces and promote common actions iv) Create public procommons references: To underline the distinction between the governance of digital commons and other forms of corporate-providers not based on free and open infrastructure. v) Build bridges between action and research on commons as a form of governance, production and horizon for social transformation. What? We will address collaboratively and critically a series of working lines: 1. Participation and engagement in communities 2. Sustainability formulas and dialogue between social digital economy and cooperativism 3. Mapping a variety of digital commons initiatives and to define a common strategy A "How to manual on digital commons: participation engagement, sustainability formulas and over all digital commons networking" and a "Digital commons alliance/network" will be the resulting outcomes of the event. When and Where? 29th and 30th of October 2011 physically at the CCCB ( 5th Montalegre str. – Aula 1) (Barcelona) and online at: http://www.digital-commons.net See program: http://www.digital-commons.net/program/ How to participate and keep informed? Not because there aren't tens of thousands of protesters, charismatic talking heads and colorful photograph opportunities--there are plenty of those. Instead, you have to owe up to the challenge of writing about a communal protest movement where there are no clear “leaders” and no official “organizers.” For those of us weaned on writing about top-down hierarchial organizations with CEOs, presidents, advisory boards and parliaments, it's a challenge. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Artur S Date: Fri, Oct 7, 2011 at 4:27 PM Subject: [OSList] The Stealth Leaders Of Occupy Wall Street (Fast Company) To: OSLIST New Adress <oslist(a)lists.openspacetech.org> Interesting... http://www.fastcompany.com/node/1785698/print Artur _______________________________________________ OSList mailing list To post send emails to OSList(a)lists.openspacetech.org To unsubscribe send an email to OSList-leave(a)lists.openspacetech.org To subscribe or manage your subscription click below: http://lists.openspacetech.org/listinfo.cgi/oslist-openspacetech.org -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Thomas Gramstad <thomas(a)ifi.uio.no> Date: Tue, Oct 11, 2011 at 12:50 AM Subject: [Commoning] FSCONS 2011, Gothenburg, 11.-13. november 2011 To: commoning(a)lists.wissensallmende.de Free Society Conference and Nordic Summit http://fscons.org/ FSCONS is the Nordic countries' largest gathering for free culture, free software and a free society. The conference is organised yearly with 250-300 participants primarily from northern Europe. The main organiser is the Society for Free Culture and Software. The date for the next summit is 11-11-11 in Gothenburg (Friday November 11 through Sunday November 13). FSCONS exists to provide a meeting place where subjects covering society, culture and technology can be discussed and brought to life in peer discussions, without being confined to each particular subject area. It should provide both the physical and virtual space where people, organisations and governments, with interest in the three subject areas can meet in a participatory and constructive dialogue. The unique combination of topics creates a platform where cross-pollination between the areas can occur, and where new co-operations and thoughts can emerge which allows the participants to find new inspiration even from areas outside of their own. Keynotes 2011: Christina Haralanova and Richard Stallman http://blog.fscons.org/?p=649 Christina Haralanova is a feminist, a Free Software hacktivist and an IT trainer. Since fall 2010, Christina does a PhD in Communication Studies in Concordia University, under the supervision of Leslie Regan-Shade. As a free software hacktivist, Christina has participated actively in the creation of the Free Software Association Bulgaria (FSA-BG), and is a member of FACIL pour lappropriation collective de linformatique libre (since 2006) and Koumbit (since 2006) in Montreal, Canada. Christina was the Project Leader of the Legal Case Management Software (LCM) (2004-2005), an LPI proctor (2003 2005), a SPIP-bg translator. Richard Stallman Richard Matthew Stallman is a software developer and software freedom activist. In 1983 he announced the project to develop the GNU operating system, a Unix-like operating system meant to be entirely free software, and has been the projects leader ever since. With that announcement Stallman also launched the Free Software Movement. In October 1985 he started the Free Software Foundation. Other speakers http://blog.fscons.org/ FSCONS Schedule: http://my.fscons.org/schedule/ Registration: http://fscons.org/registration About FFKP Föreningen fri kultur & programvara (FFKP) is a non-profit organisation based in Gothenburg. Since 2005 we've worked in support of a modern democratic society through multi-stakeholder open discussions around current issues in culture, technology and society. The society works as a hub for operations in Sweden and the Nordic countries. We work across borders, both geographically and organizationally, in order to support the discussion between different organisations and people. The society is supported in its projects by, among others, the Nordic Culture Fund, Nordic Culture Point, Google, Nokia, University of Gothenburg and the Swedish Post and Telecommunications Board. https://ffkp.se/node/151 Our vision is a modern, open democratic society where policies and decisions are made on the basis of the knowledge and opinions from multiple stakeholders. We believe that our future society must be built with the consideration of multiple stakeholders, and that suppressing, ignoring, or otherwise preventing or discouraging opinions of some stakeholders is not consistent with a democratic society. the video is well worth seeing, Michel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Oct 12, 2011 at 7:09 PM Subject: "An entire integrated system is at work" ( to extract and move debt? ) To: econowmix(a)googlegroups.com, sustainable_solidarity(a)yahoogroups.com, hc_ecology(a)yahoogroups.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=qI_P3pxze5w#t=19s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dylan_Ratigan#2011_rant 2011 rant On the August 10, 2011, broadcast of *The Dylan Ratigan Show<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dylan_Ratigan_Show> *, in a round table discussion of the market meltdown following the Budget Control Act of 2011<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budget_Control_Act_of_2011>, Ratigan went on a two-minute-long rant against what he perceived to be the state of politics in the United States government, saying: *"We've got a real problem! This is a mathematical fact! Tens of trillions of dollars are being extracted from the United States of America. Democrats aren't doing it, Republicans aren't doing it. An entire integrated system, financial system, trading system, taxing system, that was created by both parties over a period of two decades is at work on our entire country right now. And we're sitting here arguing about whether we should do the $4 trillion plan that kicks the can down the road for the president for 2017, or burn the place to the ground, both of which are reckless, irresponsible, and stupid."*[8] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dylan_Ratigan#cite_note-7> The video of his impassioned speech went viral<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_video> [9] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dylan_Ratigan#cite_note-8> and was praised by other media sources. [10] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dylan_Ratigan#cite_note-9> On a followup post on his website the day after he wrote that he had received a lot of positive mail from viewers, writing "I’m mad as hell.
