Re: [P2P-F] [Commoning] new capitalism and commoning
by andreas.exner＠chello.at 08 Feb '11

Structures do not exist beyond people, and "people", in the sense of subjects, do not exist beyond structures. We should not forget, that people do not reproduce as simply "people", but as wage labourers and capitalists or petty commodity producers or peasants. Those subjects will tend to reproduce their status (or improve on it, i.e. becoming capitalists). Reproduction and status improvement function within structures. In as far as people tend to reproduce and improve their lives and status within those very structures, they will defend those structures (by force of the state). So capitalists will defend their position to exploit labourers. And labourers will defend their position of being exploited - in a way that seems "acceptable" to them. Peasants will ususally defend the possibility to become small capitalists and sell to regional and/or global markets (most of them currently do this only to a very limited extent, worldwide). While markets were not invented by capitalists, they defend them because it is the market - as long as the capitalist mode of production exists - that enables them as a class to exploit labourers. (And it is the capitalist mode of production that propagates the market - but this discussion we already had...). That holds true for any business that participates on the social surplus value pressed out of labourers. While markets are not controlled by capitalists, capitalists do control labourers directly within the realm of their domination, i.e. the office, factory, outgrower associations etc... So strengthening commons means limiting markets and abolishings capital. Certain forms of business might reinforce commons, but only to the detriment of business, in the long run. Probably, the structural and personal shortsigthedness of capitalists will enable to exploit this asymetrical synergie without harming the "mutual relationship" in the short run. > "Non profit business" -- there is no such thing. Business means profit, if there is no profit, you are quickly out of business. So: "are these people 'enemies'"? No, capitalism is not about people, it is about structures being exclusive or inclusive. Thus "enemies" are not people, but those structures which exclude people. Generally, markets are exclusive, because you can not participate if you have nothing to sell or to buy -- be it on the world market or on Tahiti square. Thus business can not be a commons. But there can be an intimate relationship between commons and business, which has to be analysed carefully. While we say "There is no commons without commoning" the same holds true for business: "There is no business without commoning", but the relationship addressed here is completely different. Michel, definitely count us in on this. I think you are right, that while there are no guarantees, that in many ways this transition is starting now. One sign that seems to me to be connected to both wikileaks phenomenon earlier, and the Pirate Party/Tunisia/Egypt activity is that more and more mainstream programmers and internet advocates (like Douglas Rushkoff) are seriously discussing or already contributing to efforts to create truly p2p/distributed internet infrastructure. I know you've seen me state this previously, but I will repeat it here: The pressures close, control, and centralize the networks and software that are the "internet" by corporations and governments are driving the rapid evolution of a completely distributed internet infrastructure. The technological building blocks to create a distributed internet have existed for some time now, it has largely been a matter of obstacles being social/political/cultural. So, this old, forgotten book is now really important again for the at least part of the discussion on the basic exploration of concepts (although the technologies it discusses may be outdated): http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596001100/ The Ruby programming language now supports distributed Ruby programming, and Erlang can handle massively distributed computing as well. Fwd: [OK] Creating a 'Dating Site' for the Climate Action Movement!... reviving Project Matching

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Suresh Fernando <suresh2323(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Feb 7, 2011 at 11:06 PM Subject: [OK] Creating a 'Dating Site' for the Climate Action Movement!... reviving Project Matching To: openkollab(a)googlegroups.com Cc: Cooperationcommons(a)googlegroups.com, coalition(a)googlegroups.com Hi Everyone, I have some exciting news! I will be working with the Coalition of the Willing <http://cotw.cc/wiki/Coalition_of_the_Willing> project to create a *'dating site'* for the Climate Action Movement. The objective is to create a technology platform and associated processes to enable climate action projects to identify each other and align in a swarm like fashion. See Tim Rayner's description<https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1kLA1g58tMZbb0-4uqkZU5vDkMMoHpdziOW…>of the Coalition of the Willing Project! There are many projects with similar objectives that wold be better served if these projects connected with one another. By coordinating and converging on common goals, climate action projects could achieve the critical mass necessary to bring about massive social and systemic change. The theory underlying the 'dating site' was developed under the OpenKollab umbrella along with the contribution of many of you that are still on this list. The details can be found in this presentation <http://www.slideshare.net/sureshf/openkollab-project-matching>as well as here. <http://wiki.openkollab.com/wagn/ProjectMapping> I have also attached an executive summary describing the project. The stages in the development of this project can be found in the table below: * To get things going, we are scheduling a Skype chat session to discuss the project*, answer questions, and to identify those that might be interested in participating. *If you are interested in participating in the call, please provide your availability in this Doodle link. <http://doodle.com/3cnvhuixsqyz6sf2%20>* *IMPLEMENTATION PLAN* *Preparation Phase* This consists of two tracks that we can work on in parallel: *Technology/Platform Track* *Outreach Track* *Develop Project Ontology:* What information do we want to collect and why? We need to remember that the function of the information is to facilitate matching. *Develop Project Selection Criteria: *what sorts of projects do we want to approach and why? * * *Develop Supporting Collateral Material* · Executive Summary · Powerpoint Presentation · Short Video *Develop List of Suggested Projects: * · Develop central list to identify contacts we have that can assist us · What databases do we have and what projects have we been tracking? *Develop Web Platform* · Basic website · *Input form:* some custom fields based on project ontology that we develop as well as mechanism to solicit natural language input · Upload all associated collateral material · Ensure that project information that we collect is visible. This need not be complicated at this stage. Maybe a simple online spreadsheet is enough. *Identify Supports/Partners* · What organizations can we work with that can support our efforts? · Wiserearth, 350.org… etc. *Information Gathering Phase: *target information from 100 projects. More generally we need to develop an outreach strategy that might look something like the following: *Identify Information Gathering Team*: those within the COTW project that will commit to forwarding emails about the project to prospective projects and conducting follow up to solicit the required information. *Subdivide Database Amongst Information Gathering Team:* Clearly it makes most sense for those to contact people with whom they have an existing relationship. Those that we don’t have a relationship with can be divided up amongst the group *Send Out Information Gathering Emails*: the Outreach Team can forward emails to the various projects with a description of the process *Arrange Web Conferences: *Conduct weekly web presentation on PMS in order educate interested parties; partners, projects etc. *Conduct Follow Up:* actively solicit and engage projects in order obtain project information -- *Suresh Fernando * BLOG <http://sureshf.posterous.com/>, YOUTUBE<http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?feature=mhum>, OK WEBSITE, <http://openkollab.com>OK FAN PAG <http://goog_1343289408>E<http://www.facebook.com/openkollab?ref=ts#%21/openkollab> , OK GROUP <http://groups.google.ca/group/openkollab>, OK-WE<http://www.wiserearth.org/group/openkollab>, PHILOSOPHY, <http://sureshfernando.wordpress.com> TWITTER, <http://twitter.com/sureshf> FACEBOOK, <http://facebook.com/suresh.fernando>WOTW FAN PAGE<http://www.facebook.com/tedxvancouver?v=wall#%21/pages/The-Way-Of-The-Warri…> LINKEDIN<http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=412718&authType=name&authToken=GrUl…>, SLIDESHARE <http://www.slideshare.net/sureshf> * **'The counter cultural revolution was a rhizomatic meshwork of loosely-coordinated, loosely-affiliated struggles. thank you so much Paul and Sam, this article below gets a lot of attention ... my feeling is that some combination of distribution and political efficiency, must be attempted, though I'm not sure what the 'vehicle' for this might be, I'm guessing it will be (re-)invented .. Tiberius has an idea, but not really developed, which I think is important and promising, i.e. 'pre-programmed mass movements' this involves thinking ahead of contingencies such as : what do we do when the internet is shut down, what do we do when we are physically attacked .. this is why I think that next to the quick time of spontaneous mobilizations, the long time of small groups of thinkers-doers is a necessity .. this does not mean a centralized hierarchical organisation but rather a credible (as the french would say): "force de proposition" when the greek crisis was on the agenda a few months back, my idea was that we need a force of rapid intervention, that could have made the right proposals at the right time (in this case, Ellen Woods of Web of Debt had the most cogent, immediately applicable proposals) My dream/intention is to be able to describe such a few teams ... (ellen did not reply to my emails on this however <g>) Michel On Sat, Feb 5, 2011 at 12:42 AM, Paul B.
