HOW old is the market economy
by Michel Bauwens 03 Mar '11

03 Mar '11

I've always learned that the standard story of evolving to the market from barter was a myth, and that instead, the gift economy was dominant at first (see mauss) but here's a quote that claims the opposite: Philosopher Fed Turner has some interesting insights<http://frederickturnerpoet.com/?p=330>: *”There is a myth that we as a species have moved from having an edenic and arcadian gift exchange economy to a cold and corrupt market economy. As a myth it has its uses; as a fact it will not fly. Archaeologists and physical anthropologists now find trading practices among the earliest humans nearly 200,000 years ago; we were always buying, selling, hiring, trucking and bartering. And economists tell us that even in today’s advanced industrial economies the amount of value that is transferred by gift is greater than the amount transferred by market exchanges. This may sound counter-intuitive until we reflect that gift includes the free services rendered by parents to their children, husbands and wives to each other, friends to friends, hobbyists to their community, and the bequests of the dying to their heirs. “We have plenty of theory about markets, since Locke and Smith and their ilk. There is some theory about gift exchange in traditional tribal societies (Marcel Mauss, for instance), but very little until now about the economic, moral, social, political, ecological, aesthetic, and spiritual implications of today’s gift economy in advanced societies like the United States.”* via http://davidbrin.blogspot.com/2011/02/philanthropy-transparency-science.html; http://frederickturnerpoet.com/?p=330 -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Re: [P2P-F] definitions of ( hybrid networked ) modes of governance and, economics
by Sy 03 Mar '11

Democracy doesn't mean rule of the majority. Etymologically its meaning is the rule of the people. While common convention in representative democracies is that this means majority rules, this is only one kind of democratic system, and the one which historically was considered to be 'weak' democracy as allowing people to vote for a representative once every four or five years gives the people only a small degree of power to rule themselves. This was contrasted with 'strong' or direct forms of democracy where either the people were able to either manage their affairs without the need for representatives to mediate for them, or those representatives were only temporary and were able to be recalled at any time if people were unhappy with their actions. Consequently direct democracy has largely been associated with anarchist leaning groups, such as social centres, squats and co-ops. Frequently these groups opt to make decisions by consensus rather than majority based decisions as this includes all participants in a meaningful way and allows them to voice their objections to ideas rather than placing them within an outvoted (and thus silenced) minority. Dear All, I would like to contribute to the discussion about "the general relationship between p2p movements and social movements, in particular the labour movement" by sharing (attached) a paper of mine (from 2008-09), which examines the role of the amateur in the social production of the netarchical side of Web 2.0, under a Neo-Marxist spectrum. "Greenfield" means that you are "wiping the slate clean" and trying to imagine a whole new system from the ground up. This is meant mostly as an exercise in imagining and visioning new alternatives. The practical reality is that most efforts will build on existing concepts and technologies.
