red hat's restriction's

http://press.redhat.com/2011/03/04/commitment-to-open/ I would welcome any comments on this for the p2p blog, see: Recently, Jonathan Corbet, respected kernel community member and editor at LWN, commented on our change in kernel RPM packaging. When we released RHEL 6 approximately four months ago, we changed the release of the kernel package to have all our patches pre-applied. Why did we make this change? To speak bluntly, the competitive landscape has changed. Our competitors in the Enterprise Linux market have changed their commercial approach from building and competing on their own customized Linux distributions, to one where they directly approach our customers offering to support RHEL. Frankly, our response is to compete. Essential knowledge that our customers have relied on to support their RHEL environments will increasingly only be available under subscription. The itemization of kernel patches that correlate with articles in our knowledge base is no longer available to our competitors, but rather only to our customers who have recognized the value of RHEL and have thus indirectly funded Red Hat’s contributions to open source that will advance their business now and in the future. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Can We Make Electronics Without Factories?
by M. Fioretti 09 Mar '11

09 Mar '11

This should (haven't read it yet, must leave in a minute...) touch on the problems I wrote about 3 years ago on the P2P wiki: You focus on post-industrial [electronics] design. What exactly is that? Post-Industrial design is a play on words that tries to call out the inherent inadequacy of old-school industrial design techniques to create relevant products for a post-industrial world. Who really ever buys all new clothes? Instead, we modify a little at a time, replacing parts that wear out, of adding new pieces as our lifestyle changes. I needn't point out that clothing is one of the few products manufactured in a distributed way, across the US, by small designer/manufacturers. Why can't we have the same for electronics? How do we encourage designers to contribute to an ecosystem of pieces, rather than forcing users to buy entirely new clothes every few years? Are Mobile Apps Violating Open Source Licenses?
by Samuel Rose 09 Mar '11

09 Mar '11

http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/newss/7315/1/ =quote A new study from open source services vendor OpenLogic reports that 71 percent of Apple iOS and Google Android apps are not in compliance. OpenLogic scanned 635 apps, including both free and paid on the Apple App store and Google Android Marketplace. Of those 635 scanned apps, 52 apps include Apache licensed code while 16 included GPL/LGPL licensed code. Both the GPL/LGPL and the Apache open source licenses require developers to provide copies of the licenses. With the GPL/LGPL the license also requires that developers provide a means by which users can get the source code. OpenLogic has a scanning tool called, OSS Deep Discovery, which helps to identify when open source code is being used. "The lack of compliance was not all that surprising to us," Kim Weins, senior vp of products and marketing at OpenLogic, told InternetNews.com. "Developers and companies often don't have a complete picture of their open source usage or how to comply with the licenses." Wiens added that with mobile apps, there is an influx of non-technology companies who have now become software distributors. These companies may not have experience with the legal and licenses issues around open source compliance. Adding further insult to injury, OpenLogic's study found several apps that appeared to write their EULAs with no awareness that their app contained open source. "It is possible that the developers were aware of it, but the lawyers that drafted the EULAs were not," Weins said. "This is very common in companies that we work with -- often no one in the company has a complete picture of the open source being used." She added that happens because the companies often don't have the right processes and tools in place, or because they aren't even aware that it's an issue. "In addition, the nature of open source software, which often bundles other open source software under completely different licenses, means that even developers can miss some of the licenses for open source they are including in their code," Weins said. App stores all have some kind of evaluation process before an app is accepted. Weins noted that the app stores should take a lead in help in to facilitate awareness of open source compliance among the developers. "Although the developer agreement for an app store will discuss IP issues and may even reference open source code, there is very little information to help developers understand what the issues are and how to follow the rules," Weins said. "In addition, when an open source compliance issue is raised, it is likely to result in a takedown request for the app." OpenLogic sells a product called the OLEX App Store Edition which provides tooling that can be used by developers to do a self-service scan on their apps prior to submitting to the app store and by app stores to track open source compliance. Overall the goal of OpenLogic's study on open source license compliance for mobile apps is about raising awareness. "We will not be reporting or sharing any names of companies or apps that failed to comply," Weins said. "We will attempt to reach out to those companies and inform them, so that they can remediate the situation and come into compliance." end quote= -- -- Sam Rose Future Forward Institute and Forward Foundation Tel:+1(517) 639-1552 Cel: +1-(517)-974-6451 skype: samuelrose email: samuel.rose(a)gmail.com http://forwardfound.org http://futureforwardinstitute.org http://hollymeadcapital.com http://p2pfoundation.net http://socialmediaclassroom.com "The universe is not required to be in perfect harmony with human ambition." - Carl Sagan

Fwd: [fcf_discussion] Why don’t more scientists contribute to Wikipedia?: Survey to find out
by Michel Bauwens 09 Mar '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Fuster, Mayo <Mayo.Fuster(a)eui.eu> Date: Wed, Mar 9, 2011 at 12:04 AM Subject: [fcf_discussion] Why don’t more scientists contribute to Wikipedia?: Survey to find out To: "fcforum_discussion(a)list.fcforum.net" < fcforum_discussion(a)list.fcforum.net> Why don’t more scientists contribute to Wikipedia? The Wikimedia Research Committee is trying to find out why scientists, academics and other experts don’t contribute to Wikipedia. >>>> Participate at a survey to find out: http://survey.nitens.org/?sid=21693 Dario Taraborelli outlines the situation: Last month, Wikipedia celebrated its 10th anniversary, which saw considerable coverage in mainstream media. A Chronicle article observed that, today, the project does not represent “the bottom layer of authority, nor the top, but in fact the highest layer without formal vetting” and, as such, it can serve as “an ideal bridge between the validated and unvalidated Web”. An increasing number of university students use Wikipedia for “pre-research”, as part of their course assignments or research projects. Yet many among academics, scientists and experts turn their noses up at the thought of contributing to Wikipedia, despite a growing number of calls from the scientific community to join the project. The Association for Psychological Science launched an initiative to get the scientific psychology community involved in improving the quality of articles in their field, while biomedical experts recently called upon their peers to help make public health information in Wikipedia rigorous and complete. These initiatives remain sporadic and most academics – despite goodwill to contribute – still perceive major barriers to participation, which typically include a general lack of time to contribute, but also barriers of a technical, social and cultural nature. These encompass the lack of incentives from the perspective of a professional career, the poor recognition of one’s expertise within Wikipedia, the widespread perception of Wikipedia as a non-authoritative source. In combination with the apparent anomaly of collaborative – and often anonymous – authorship and the resulting fluidity of Wikipedia articles, these factors create an environment that significantly differs from the ones experts are accustomed to. Now, the Wikimedia Research Committee has launched a survey to understand why scientists, academics and other experts do (or do not) contribute to Wikipedia, and whether individual motivation aligns with shared perceptions of Wikipedia within different communities of experts. The survey is anonymous and takes about 20 minutes to complete. Whether you are an active Wikipedia contributor or not, you can take the survey and help Wikipedia think of ways around barriers to expert participation. Fwd: [Commoning] Media Piracy in Emerging Economies - The Consumers Dilemma
by Michel Bauwens 09 Mar '11

09 Mar '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Becky Lentz, Dr. <roberta.lentz(a)mcgill.ca> Date: Wed, Mar 9, 2011 at 5:56 AM Subject: [Commoning] Media Piracy in Emerging Economies - The Consumers Dilemma To: "Becky Lentz, Dr." <roberta.lentz(a)mcgill.ca> Just released! http://piracy.ssrc.org/ Media Piracy in Emerging Economies is the first independent, large-scale study of music, film and software piracy in emerging economies, with a focus on Brazil, India, Russia, South Africa, Mexico and Bolivia. Based on three years of work by some thirty-five researchers, Media Piracy in Emerging Economies tells two overarching stories: ne tracing the explosive growth of piracy as digital technologies became cheap and ubiquitous around the world, and another following the growth of industry lobbies that have reshaped laws and law enforcement around copyright protection. The report argues that these efforts have largely failed, and that the problem of piracy is better conceived as a failure of affordable access to media in legal markets. ³The choice,² said Joe Karaganis, director of the project, ³isn¹t between high piracy and low piracy in most media markets. The choice, rather, is between high-piracy, high-price markets and high-piracy, low price markets. Our work shows that media businesses can survive in both environments, and that developing countries have a strong interest in promoting the latter. This problem has little to do with enforcement and a lot to do with fostering competition.² Major Findings * Prices are too high. High prices for media goods, low incomes, and cheap digital technologies are the main ingredients of global media piracy. Relative to local incomes in Brazil, Russia, or South Africa, the retail price of a CD, DVD, or copy of MS Office is five to ten times higher than in the US or Europe. Legal media markets are correspondingly tiny and underdeveloped. * Competition is good. The chief predictor of low prices in legal media markets is the presence of strong domestic companies that compete for local audiences and consumers. In the developing world, where global film, music, and software companies dominate the market, such conditions are largely absent. * Antipiracy education has failed. The authors find no significant stigma attached to piracy in any of the countries examined. Rather, piracy is part of the daily media practices of large and growing portions of the population. * Changing the law is easy. Changing the practice is hard. Industry lobbies have been very successful at changing laws to criminalize these practices, but largely unsuccessful at getting governments to apply them. There is, the authors argue, no realistic way to reconcile mass enforcement and due process, especially in countries with severely overburdened legal systems. * Criminals can¹t compete with free. The study finds no systematic links between media piracy and organized crime or terrorism in any of the countries examined. Today, commercial pirates and transnational smugglers face the same dilemma as the legal industry: how to compete with free. * Enforcement hasn¹t worked. After a decade of ramped up enforcement, the authors can find no impact on the overall supply of pirated goods. _______________________________________________ Commoning mailing list Commoning(a)lists.wissensallmende.de http://lists.wissensallmende.de/mailman/listinfo/commoning -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens
