I'm going to be sharing my weekly Team Human monologues here, but in print form. I hope you enjoy them. They top-of-mind, most honest ruminations. This is me being vulnerable. DO WE NEED A NEW MYTH, OR NO MYTH? This is the true, biggest challenge I’m facing as a writer and thinker. Myth: Do we need a new one, or do we need to dispense with them altogether? I used to direct theater. I left the theater because I got increasingly dissatisfied with its reliance on stories with clear beginnings, middles, and ends. Aristotle's narrative arc with its rising tension, crisis, and catharsis wasn't just predictable, but dangerously limiting. Things look bad, but as long as you accept the hero's solution, everything gets solved and you can go back to sleep. Crisis, climax, and sleep - the much-too-male approach to everything from sex to religion, capitalism to communism. I left theater for the net, which seemed to offer a more open-ended, connected form of sense-making. So I wrote about that, and the possibilities this opened for everything from economics to society. In my books, I usually tried crashing a set of myths - but then usually offer some alternative at the end. So in my religion book I smashed the myth of apocalypse and salvation, but offered an alternative path toward consensus, progressive collaboration. In another, I exposed the fallacy of hand-me-down truths, but then offered an alternative of collective reality creation. In a graphic novel, I undermined the authority of the storyteller (me) and then have a character hand a pencil to the reader as if through the page. In a book on Judaism, I smashed the idolatry that infected Judaism, but promote a new, provisional mythology of communal sense making. In my books on economics, I crash the cynically devised mythologies of capitalism and corporatism, but offer a new one of circular economics and sharing. In my Team Human podcast, I regularly crash the myth of the survival of the fittest individual, but offer a new evolutionary history of interspecies cooperation. Better myths, like cultural operating systems, should yield better results. But if they are all myths, are they all ultimately destructive? Even science falls into the trap. We get an idea - say, that agriculture was a wrong turn - and then “see” evidence that hunter-gatherers worked fewer hours than we did after the invention of agriculture. I have even quoted this ‘fact’ from neuorscientist/sociologist Robert Sapolsky, and others, before realizing it’s based not on science but a story. People and institutions come to me to help develop a new myth for 21st Century, for digital times. But mythology feels more like the product of a television media environment - imagery and hallucination. The digital media environment is about fact. Memory. It all takes place on memory. That’s why we’re fighting less over who believes what, than what really happened. Where did humans come from? Are things getting better or worse? And the myths are no longer adequate. The stories are not up to the task. I think Team Human’s job may be to find ways to work together without an overriding mythological construct. We should do something in a new way because it’s just better, on an experiential, practical, or scientific level. Growing food in a certain way - not because it’s connected to Mother Gaia, but because it keeps the soil alive. Not a metaphor. Reality. If we are destined to think and communicate in myths - if that’s our nature - then we can at least accept that we all use stories to understand the world. Understanding another person means listening to their story - and sharing one’s own - but accepting that both are just stories. Myths are ways of connecting the dots between the moments of human experience. They create a sense of continuity and purpose, even though there may be none. Or myths may help each of us trace a path of cause-and-effect through a maze of reality that is so interconnected it would just overwhelm us to comprehend it in its entirety. We each make our own myth to explain the journey we happened to take. But it's more of a convenience than a reality. And we can look back on our lives, and come up with a new myth to explain it. The myth is not for someone else, it's for ourselves. Of course we can still listen to one another’s perceptions and sense-making - and then gain some empathy for why they’re thinking and acting the way they do - without necessary believing any of it. And, maybe more importantly, without trying to get them to exchange their mythology for ours. Understanding other people's myths, unconditionally and without being threatened by them, has helped keep me sane during this particularly tumultuous cultural moment. So what’s Team Human’s job: to come up w a new myth? Or break them all? Whatever we decide, it should be a conscious choice. This essay started as a monologue on TeamHuman.fm. It began during the First World War, and really came to form after the Second World War. It's far from perfect but as human treaty networks go over the course of history, it has worked pretty well. We are watching it now come unravelled because of a man who, if he is not a Russian agent, might as well be, because he has been protecting and advancing the geopolitical goals of Vladimir Putin since the day he was sworn into office. Indeed, that's how got into office. And here's the important thing: 87% of Republicans support him. We have a fifth column in the United States either through ignorance, stupidity, racism, or fear, that did vote, and is prepared to vote again for Donald Trump. I don't think the Democratic Party is competent to thwart what is happening; this gets down to the citizen level. The only effective response to stop this is overwhelming vote against the Republican Party. They must be cleaned out of government, and men and women committed to wellbeing ahead of profit must be elected. *The G 7 Meeting* President Donald Trump said Saturday that his relationships with other Western leaders are perfect, but an acrimonious end to the G7 summit showed how the transatlantic alliance has never been so split. A fragile show of unity at the meeting in Quebec was blown apart, with the group’s most powerful member, the United States, isolated from the rest of the world’s most industrialized democracies after Trump pulled support for a common communique blaming what he said were “false statements” by Canada’s leader. “PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, ‘US Tariffs were kind of insulting’ and he ‘will not be pushed around.’ Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!’ Trump tweeted from Air Force One — hours after he left the summit for Singapore. Trump had earlier angrily hit back at suggestions that he had thrown the West into turmoil at the summit, <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> branding a question over any downturn in relations as “fake news.” Yet Trump showed up late and left early from a meeting that highlighted gaping divides within … Read in browser » <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Post Comment <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: share on Twitter] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: Like Trump plunges West into crisis over summit spat on Facebook] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Inequality Has Been Growing in the US, and the Trump Administration Is Making It Much Worse <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> *on Jun 10, 2018 02:34 am* Lauren Carasik - Reader Supported News/ Al Jazeera Wealth inequity is one of the manifestations of Neo-Feudalism. This report describes how it is being created. America is a deep trouble; we are in very real danger of losing our democracy. Children in East Baltimore. Credit: Patrick Semansk/AP On June 1, Phillip Alston, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, released a report <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> on the United States. It outlined his searing critique of the Trump administration’s policies, arguing that they are deepening entrenched inequality and increasing misery. Alston painted a grim picture of the country’s current circumstances and its likely trajectory, not only for those at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder but for American society itself. The report presents a withering appraisal of American exceptionalism. As Alston observes, “the United States is alone among developed countries in insisting that, while human rights are of fundamental importance, they do not include rights that guard against dying of hunger, dying from a lack of access to healthcare or growing up in a context of total deprivation.” The high rates of child and youth poverty are particularly alarming, since they “perpetuate the intergenerational transmission of poverty very effectively, and ensure that the American dream is rapidly becoming the American illusion”. While people outside the US might be shocked by the conclusions of the report, for many Americans they are painfully clear. Aspects of the US political system and long-term … Read in browser » <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Post Comment <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: share on Twitter] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: Like Inequality Has Been Growing in the US, and the Trump Administration Is Making It Much Worse on Facebook] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Trump’s tariff on Canadian newsprint is killing US newspapers, Republicans warn <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> *on Jun 10, 2018 02:33 am* Pete Kasperowicz - The Washington Examiner Underneath the chaff of the headlines is where to look to see what is actually going on. That's what I try to put into SR. I believe our democracy is under a coherent and well-funded assault. Much of it involves subtle changes remarked on by few, except those affected. This report is an example on what I mean. Small town papers where the Trump voter lives are being strangled, replaced by Fox and Sinclair. Basically using the private sector so that the people trying to craft this transition make great profit, a state media has been created. There is the potential of some good news in this though as the lede paragraph spells out. This is how Neo-feudalism is being constructed. It will allow the appearance of democracy while, in fact, controlling it, through a mix of voter suppression, gerrymandering, manipulation of media, and the legal bribery Citizens United permits. A chain of think tanks, institutes, and the funding of professors who advance the model, is providing the intellectual justification for what is happening. The newsprint tariffs are being collected, but they are not finalized yet. The Commerce Department is set to finalize its decision by August. Credit: Maurico Palos/Bloomberg A dozen House lawmakers have introduced legislation to remove President Trump’s tariffs on Canadian newsprint so a study can be done on how much those tariffs are crushing local newspapers around the country. The bill, introduced by Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D., is a response to the 22 percent tariff that the Trump administration has imposed on some Canadian newsprint since the beginning of this year. Noem said that tariff has led to rising costs for local newspapers, and are a threat to their survival. “In recent years, new tariffs on Canadian newsprint have increased paper prices by 20 to 30 percent,” Noem said in a statement. “That’s significant. A paper that services around 20,000 customers, for instance, could see paper costs rise by about a quarter-million dollars annually, threatening the newspaper’s survival.” Local papers have been complaining this year about rising costs, and Noem and her colleagues are hoping to give them at least a temporary break from the cost hike. Under her bill, U.S. tariffs on newsprint would be put on hold until … Read in browser » <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Post Comment <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: share on Twitter] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: Like Trump’s tariff on Canadian newsprint is killing US newspapers, Republicans warn on Facebook] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Brzezinski says Trump complains he can’t watch porn in White House <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> *on Jun 10, 2018 02:32 am* ARIS FOLLEY - The Hill I'll just let this story speak for itself. *Pastors from the Las Vegas area pray with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during the election campaign in 2016.* *Credit: Evan Vucci/AP* MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski accused President Trump <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> on Thursday of complaining that he can’t watch porn in the White House. Brzezinski, who has been in a vicious feud with Trump for most of his presidency, made the extraordinary charge while appearing on “MSNBC Live with Stephanie Ruhle,” citing “someone who spoke” to Trump about his life in the White House. The comments came up after Ruhle interviewed Michael Avenatti, the attorney for adult-film actress Stormy Daniels, over remarks by Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani about his client. Giuliani attacked the credibility of Daniels, saying that “if you’re going to sell your body for money, you just don’t have a reputation.” “The hypocrisy is astounding,” Brzezinski said of Giuliani’s remarks about Daniels, who says that she slept with Trump and was paid to keep quiet. “Because I know someone who spoke to Donald Trump recently about life in the White House,” Brzezinski continued, “and Donald Trump’s biggest complaint was that he’s not allowed to watch porn in the White House.” As Ruhle broke into laugher, Brzezinski said, “So there you … Read in browser » <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Post Comment <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: share on Twitter] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: Like Brzezinski says Trump complains he can’t watch porn in White House on Facebook] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> *How Do I Respond? Fwd: 🔴 NEW STUDY: Global Study on Youth Cooperative Entrepreneurship

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: CICOPA <cicopa(a)cicopa.coop> Date: Wed, Jun 6, 2018 at 5:15 PM Subject: 🔴 NEW STUDY: Global Study on Youth Cooperative Entrepreneurship To: michel(a)p2pfoundation.net In a changing world of work, cooperatives provide security and meaningful jobs to young people, new study shows View this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/cicopa.coop/new-study-global-study-on-youth-cooperative-…> In a changing world of work, cooperatives provide security and meaningful jobs to young people, new study shows <https://cicopa.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&…>Brussels, 6 June 2018 –* CICOPA*, the international organisation of industrial and service cooperatives, has published today a new “*Global Study on Youth Cooperative Entrepreneurship* <https://cicopa.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&…>”, as part of its campaign “*We own it! The future of work is ours <https://cicopa.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&…>* ”. The study is based on desk research and on an online survey involving 64 youth cooperatives in the five continents, and shows how – in a world of work deeply reshaped by demographic changes, globalization, technological innovations and youth unemployment – *cooperatives can be a concrete tool in the hands of young people for improving their work and entrepreneurship conditions.* The study reveals a quite fresh and dynamic picture of youth cooperatives who took part in the survey. They are primarily active in the service sector, and are highly involved in activities requiring a certain degree of training, specialized knowledge and skills (e.g. telecommunications and information technologies, programming, legal and accounting activities, management, consultancy, research, marketing…). In most cases, they are micro or small-sized enterprises and have reported a positive economic performance and increasing or stable trends in job creation in recent years. They reveal gender equity in management positions and are extremely keen to implement new organizational methods in their business practices (e.g. workplace organisation and governance practices). Their cooperative choice is justified by a mix of value-based and pragmatic motivations: *meaningful work (to “work differently”), experience and values-related aspirations, but also concrete need for stable jobs, career opportunities and protection*. This picture, albeit partial, strongly suggests that youth cooperatives are riding the wave of changes and represent a valuable and secure option for young entrepreneurs. The global study also shows how cooperatives can play a crucial role in responding to new challenges introduced by recent work and economic transformations affecting new generations. For example*, they can “inject” democracy and participation inside the digital economy, by giving ownership and control of power to the people who use and work through on-line platforms*. Through their participatory governance, they are a laboratory in the hands of young people for the experimentation of innovative and sustainable forms of work management. However, concludes the study, cooperatives cannot be considered a panacea. Besides the important and increasing involvement coming from the cooperative movement to answer to youth needs, *cooperatives are only able to display their full potential if a favorable institutional environment surrounds them*. This is particularly true when it comes to providing quality employment and entrepreneurship, which is highly dependent on the institutional frameworks regulating cooperatives, the legal status of young workers and worker-members, but also access to financial resources and user-friendly bureaucracy. Fwd: Help us test the Algorithm Observatory prototype

The Algorithm Observatory <https://oswego-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/Redirect?ukey=1jmq29v1I4-Dtq2ipqG…> prototype is ready for testing, and I was hoping you could help us. Part media literacy project and part citizen science experiment, Algorithm Observatory can help us understand how algorithms categorize us. This version is only a prototype with limited functionality that works with Facebook ads. But eventually, Algorithm Observatory will allow anyone to study any social computing algorithm. Our hope is that educators can use it as a learning environment. Right now, you can help us in two ways: First, feel free to test it by submitting reports. It's really simple. All you need to do is fill out a survey and then upload screen captures of Facebook ads. If you encounter any bugs, please let me know. Second, tell your friends about Algorithm Observatory! The more people we can get to test it, the better. Thank you for your support. Ulises A.
