We also critiqued the copyright policy of the Maharashtra government as a step backward in providing accessible education. We welcome your comments and feedback. Best wishes, Sunil Abraham Executive Director Highlights - Balbharati – the Maharashtra state bureau of textbook production and curriculum research – has issued a copyright policy that forces all publishers, digital educational-content creators, and coaching classes to obtain expensive licenses for developing material directly or indirectly relating to Balbharati’s content. More to come. Please tell your friends about TeamHuman, and feel free to forward this email to anyone interested in human intervention in the machine. Here's my monologue from today's episode of Team Human <https://teamhuman.fm/episodes/ep-91-adah-parris-the-art-of-conversation/>, with special guest Adah Parris. *Don't Have to Look Like a Refugee * Whenever you’re confused by something Trump is doing, remember: he’s less a politician than a propagandist. Don’t look to the policy for the logic driving his actions - look at the pictures. This week, progressives are confused and outraged by the imagery coming out of Texas showing immigrant children being separated from their parents and held in detention centers. Babies crying, chain-link fence, mothers restrained by ICE agents, teens warehoused in decommissioned Walmarts. Surely this is enough to bring down the Trump administration, or lead evangelicals and others to appreciate the hard-heartedness of his treatment of the huddled masses. But despite the outrage, despite the round-the-clock coverage, despite the YouTube videos, and despite the rush of the horrified, truth-based media to the scene of the Mexican border - or even because of it - Trump’s propaganda is coming through loud and clear: America is being invaded by something less than human beings. On the surface level, at least to those already sympathetic to Trump, the immigrant children are not victims of the US Department of Homeland Security but victims of their own parents. Smuggle your kid over an international border into a country where you’re not welcome, and guess what? You’re going to risk being separated from your kid. Like driving drunk, or leaving your kid in the parking lot while you do grocery shopping, illegal immigration puts one’s children at risk. The images of weeping children are meant as warnings to those thinking of setting out tomorrow or next week or next month for a stealthy border crossing into America: the risks are greater. And Trump manages to generate all this fear and deterrence without shooting or electrocuting anybody. Better yet, he can blame the democrats for not having made a deal with him on the Dream Act. You want this horror show to stop? Accept my terms for a wall. But to understand the longterm propaganda strategy, we have to focus less on the words than the pictures. It’s not about who is to blame for what. It’s about recasting the immigrants as refugees, and refugees as animals, prisoners, vermin, and potential terrorists. Photos of teen boys in detention centers, sectioned off by chainlink fence, are meant to evoke reform schools or prison cells. These are the would-be members of the notorious MS-13 gang. Pictures of children of color, huddled together under rescue blankets, recall those of Syrian refugees fleeing war for the relative safety of Europe. As if to make these comparisons explicit, Trump proclaims that “the United States will not be a migrant camp. It will not be a refugee holding facility. You see what’s going on in Europe and around the world and it’s not going to happen here. Not on my watch.” He’s not just calling them “poisonous snakes” or “animals,” but creating a situation that - however painful to watch - slowly recontextualizes human beings from America’s south as animals. With enough time, our brains reconcile the images with an imaginary reality: if these people are in cages like animals, then they must be animals. It’s the same strategy used to undermine the humanity of immigrants for ages, whether it’s the media treatment of Albanians fleeing to Italy in the 1990’s, made to appear like an invading army of rodents, or the Biblical Pharaoh framing his Israelite slaves as fast-replicating insects. It plays to the darkest, fear-based construction of our primitive psyche: us or them. Forget the reality - that Mexicans are actually emigrating from the US back to Mexico: there’s a net decrease. That more immigrants come from China and India than the south. The only way to understand the Trump administration’s proposed wall is as a safety play for global warming. Instead of admitting there’s an environmental crisis underway and reducing carbon emissions, just accept the inevitable climate crisis, and barricade the nation from the inevitable flow of refugees from the south. Whatever we’re doing now is simply priming the American public for the inhumanity to come. The one thing this photographic strategy doesn’t take into account is the sound <https://www.thecut.com/2018/06/immigrant-children-separated-parents-familie…>. Photography emphasizes distance and objectivity. It’s evidence. Human faces shrunk down to the size of thumbprints, frozen in time. The sounds of the crying children reach a different part of our psyche. The cries resonate in our bodies as surely as if the suffering children were in the same room. Sound is intimate. That’s why I do radio and podcast: the sound connects us, retrieving a pre-internet, pre-printing press, pre-scribal sense of community. The net has encouraged us to use our eyes to understand the world. Pictures and text. Memes. That may be great to promote ridicule and provoke fear. But it’s time to get beyond the images we’re fed before we accept the fake news they’re trying to disseminate. If it takes the sounds of crying children to wake us up from this nightmare of nativist superiority, so be it. *This has been adapted from today's monologue on Douglas Rushkoff's podcast, Team Human <http://teamhuman.fm>. * ---- This is RushkoffList, a monthlyish update and advance look at work in progress. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Neal Gorenflo <neal(a)shareable.net> Date: Fri, Jun 29, 2018 at 11:00 PM Subject: Thank you & a bonus gift To: Michael Bouwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> <https://www.sharingcities.net/r?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.shareable.net%2F&e=cece…> Dear Michael, Thank you for being part of Shareable's community, reading our coverage of the latest sharing innovations, and hearing us out over the last few weeks about Shareable work empowering people to share during our *June fundraising campaign* <https://www.sharingcities.net/r?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdonatenow.networkforgood.or…> . I kicked the campaign off by sharing our 2018 strategy to diversify our coverage, increase reader involvement in our work, and our experiments with multimedia. My colleague Tom Llewellyn shared his work on our upcoming Disaster Collectivism Podcast and the impact of Shareable's global, crowdsourced book tour for, "Sharing Cities: Activating the Urban Commons <https://www.sharingcities.net/r?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.shareable.net%2Fsharing…> ." Our lead editor Ambika Kandasamy shared an example of the new, collaborative way we're doing our reporting to bring readers into the process, help them learn from each other, and increase the quality and impact of our work. The good news is you're part of Shareable's story of impact. Our just completed reader survey showed that *73% of readers changed their life in a positive way due to reading Shareable*. And that many of you on this e-newsletter list care enough about the positive changes we catalyze in people's lives and communities to support us financially. We also had about a dozen people contribute in other ways, like committing to write a story for Shareable. So I want to thank you for becoming part of our work. If you haven't joined in yet, I invite you to join others who've supported us by making a *tax-deductible donation to Shareable* <https://www.sharingcities.net/r?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdonatenow.networkforgood.or…>. We greatly value and need your support to do our work. *BONUS GIFT*: If you gave in June, we'll also thank you by sending you an e-book version of "Sharing Cities: Activating the Urban Commons." And if you haven't given yet in June, we'll do the same for you if *click here* <https://www.sharingcities.net/r?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdonatenow.networkforgood.or…> to make a donation of $10 or more today. Here, *Glamour* magazine shines that light on nine women involved in the world of cryptocurrency. Morgan Peck explains why so few women have thus far been spotlighted as major players in the blockchain/crypto scenes: “This new financial world started out much like the old one did: male and white.” Meet Connie Gallippi, who founded BitGive—a way to donate to charity using cryptocurrencies. Meet Tavonia Evans, whose coin $GUAP is “specifically designed to serve black consumers” and support businesses that are black-owned. Just being aware that there is space for (non-white!) women in tech can be enough encouragement for other women to get involved. In its current state, many find crypto communities exclusive and opaque—but the barriers to entry can be lowered the more people self-educate and the more media attention is given to those making strides like the people on this list. This new realm of tech is powerful and representation matters. <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=A%20Listicle%20That%20Matters%3A%20Wo…> <https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30835283/www.facebook.com?p=eyJzIjoiUnV…> <https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30835283/www.piqd.com?p=eyJzIjoidTU5RGN…> <https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30835283/www.piqd.com?p=eyJzIjoiajRETGp…> Source: Morgen Peck | glamour.com on 04/24/2018 | Language: EN Cryptocurrency Is Not Just a Boys' Club Read article <https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30835283/www.piqd.com?p=eyJzIjoiajRETGp…> Your newsletter Not enough information in your newsletter? It's a long shot, but could produce some significant consequences. *Some state lawmakers are targeting Trump for not releasing his tax returns.* *Credit: Saul Loeb/AFP/* Lawmakers in at least 25 states have introduced bills that would require presidential candidates to release their tax returns <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> to appear on the 2020 ballot in that state — a clear swipe at President Trump, the only modern president who’s refused to release his personal tax returns. *Why it matters:* In theory, Trump could be blocked from the ballot in any state where the new requirement became law. But not a single state has enacted it so far, and the governors of California and New Jersey have vetoed it after it passed both state chambers. It’s more interesting as a way for state Democrats to troll Trump than as an actual re-election threat. *Where it stands: *Rhode Island is the latest state to pass this measure through its state Senate, according to the Providence Journal <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…>, and Maryland’s state Senate passed a bill <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> in May.
