Cooperative Life in Chicago
by Steve Ediger 10 Oct '18

10 Oct '18

Hello, I'm writing to report on recent and future cooperative activities in Chicago. On August 25, almost 300 folks involved and interested in cooperation as economic mode gathered in Chicago, Illinois, USA for Chicago's 1st Cooperative Economy Summit. This website <http://www.chi-coop-summit.org> begins to document that event. As it turns out, many people have been working on the cooperative movement in relatively siloed conditions. This was the first time(barring a smaller, less broadly represented event in 2015, Cooperation2015), that such a broad set of folks interested in the cooperative and solidarity economies had gathered in Chicago. Almost all of the entities were local Chicago organizations, except three that brought a national credentials to the summit. In other words, we were working with local folks on local projects, projects in the dream phase, to those that have been in operation for decades. Cooperatives, cooperative support, and policy organizations participated, giving the summit an aura of holistic approaches. Panels - Better Than Roommates: Housing Coops of Cook County - Building & Sustaining Food Co-operatives - Building the Chicagoland Ecosystem: Advocating for the Policy Changes that We Need - Utility Coops of Cook County: What They Are & Can Be - Using Political Office To Increase The Cooperative Economy - Hacking Traditional Capitalist Financing Tools for Rapid Cooperative Growth - Building More Cooperation In Your Life *Discussion Breakout Groups* - Building a Culture of Cooperation in Chicago: Incorporating Solidarity Economy Principles into Our Organizations and Ourselves - Community Land Management - Collaborative Urban Food Systems - Interlinking the Cooperative Economy for Growth - People’s Workshop on Participatory Budgeting - Local Circular Economy Principles Additional organizations hosted tables to present their work. We were amply feed and given drink (including some great beer) by various food cooperatives and brewers. Various cooperatives contributed printing, translation and other services. Much discussion took place in hallways, the dining area and after the event at an after party. As a followup, we are meeting under the banner of Chicago Cooperative Ecosystem Coalition on October 17, 2018 <https://www.eventbrite.com/e/chicagoland-cooperative-ecosystem-coalition-cc…>. We hope form a long term coalition of all sorts of cooperatives at this meeting. We're inviting all folks interested and involved in cooperatives in the Chicagoland area to attend this seminal meeting and participate in growing a more genuine sharing economy.* If you are in the Chicagoland area and/or know folks interested in the cooperative or solidarity economies, please contact them and encourage them to RSVP at the above link and participate in forming this coalition. * Notwithstanding these encouraging events, the cooperative and solidarity economies face many hurdles in Chicago. Other US cities have fostered a much healthier cooperative culture and it shows. A decade ago, we lost the Hyde Park Food Cooperative, which had been around for at least four decades. Chicago needs a much more vibrant food cooperative sector. Housing cooperatives are in better shape, but hardly driving the housing economy. Utility cooperatives are not very present in the urban landscape. They have traditionally fared better and had federal support in rural areas. Chicago has quite a number of credit unions available to the general public. However credit unions have played only a very quiet role in the cooperative movement in the USA. Finally, even as we begin to come together in coalition, many agendas, spoken and unspoken, drive the planning. The meeting on October 17 will better inform us of the strengths and gaps with which we are dealing. Cheers, Steve Ediger

Its theme was "INFILTRATION: Challenging Supremacism" (Sept. 7-8, 2018). The photo and video documentation is now online! Please check it out! "The conference focused on the practice of political, investigative and activist infiltration as a form of better understanding aims, lifestyles and methods of right-wing extremist groups. What is the drive for young generations to join extremist groups? How can we analyse their dynamics from inside? What are the reasons of fascination of right-wing propaganda and supremacist outrage? With this conference, we advocate for a critical reflection on the subjects of populism, nationalism, right-wing extremism, and alt-right, to analyse the effects of such phenomena in art, media, politics and society." China’s goal, according to the sources and insiders, is to have long-term access to high-value corporate secrets and sensitive government networks. Since the products of those major companies are sold across the globe, the advantages are enormous for a worldwide secret data gathering for the Chinese state. If the claims are true, which this story claims they are. It all began with Amazon.com Inc. began evaluating a startup called Elemental Technologies to help with a major expansion of its streaming video service, Amazon Prime Video. Elemental produced software for compressing massive video files and formatting them for different devices. But their activity fitted also well with Amazon’s businesses with the U.S. government, such as the highly secure cloud that Amazon Web Services (AWS) was building for the CIA. To double-check Elemental for sensitive issues, Amazon recruited a third-party company to scrutinize Elemental’s security, and it soon was discovered that the there were some suspicious, tiny chips on the motherboards that were not part of their original design. Amazon reported the discovery to U.S. authorities, sending a shudder through the intelligence community. Elemental’s servers could be found in Department of Defense data centers, the CIA’s drone operations, and the onboard networks of Navy warships ... During the ensuing top-secret probe, which remains open more than three years later, investigators determined that the chips allowed the attackers to create a stealth doorway into any network that included the altered machines. Multiple people familiar with the matter say investigators found that the chips had been inserted at factories run by manufacturing subcontractors in China. So, here begins the story ... <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=Deep%20Espionage%3A%20How%20China%20U…> <https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30835283/www.facebook.com?p=eyJzIjoicmF…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/deep-espionage-how-china-…> <https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30835283/www.piqd.com?p=eyJzIjoiMUhwMV9…> Source: Jordan Robertson, Michael Riley | bloomberg.com on | Image: Scott Gelber the-big-hack-how-china-used-a-tiny-chip-to-infiltrate-america-s-top-companies Read article <https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30835283/www.piqd.com?p=eyJzIjoiMUhwMV9…> Your newsletter Not enough information in your newsletter? It is well-known that since the last presidential elections in the United States, Facebook is facing more and more pressure to prevent the spread of misinformation. However, last week Facebook said it would team up with two US non-profits to slow the global spread of fake news that could influence elections. It also acknowledged that fake news sites were still read by millions. But the two organizations are the International Republican Institute and the National Democratic Institute, and, of course, both of them have ties with the US government and the country's leading parties. For that reason, it should be obvious that they have their very own interests. They do not want to combat fake news "because it's a good thing". Often, the US government itself is spreading misinformation. I witnessed this myself countless times after covering US war crimes in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries. So I guess the only bad guys will be the Russians, Iranians and others while the US government itself will be sold as the presenter of the one and only truth. <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=Facebook%20Wants%20To%20Fight%20Propa…> <https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30835283/www.facebook.com?p=eyJzIjoiZUN…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/facebook-wants-to-fight-p…> <https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30835283/www.piqd.com?p=eyJzIjoicDBBR3R…> Source: Joseph Menn | reuters.com on 09/20/2018 | Language: EN Facebook expands fake election news fight, but falsehoods still... In his new article Jason Hickel asks us to rethink our current GDP dependency as the main metric for national economic success. Rather, he suggests exploring alternatives such as a genuine progress indicator (GPI). Using GPI would help us maximize socially good outcomes while minimizing ecologically bad ones. What do you think?: https://foreignpolicy.com/2018/09/12/why-growth-cant-be-green/ The significance of this article being published in Foreign Policy Magazine should not be overlooked, demonstrating that these ideas are slowly but surely entering mainstream discussions. Hickel refers to recent research that confirms what many of us have long felt: you can't look to the greening of economic growth as a way out of our limits to growth dilemma. Hickel emphasizes that ending growth doesn’t mean shutting down economic activity - it simply means that next year we can’t produce and consume more than we are doing this year. The boundary level of usable natural resources per year of 50 billion metric tons was breached in 2000. Once this was reached, pursuing any degree of economic growth drives resource use into the space beyond limits. #PostGrowthAlliance submission by: @therules.org h/t: @foreign.policy.magazine This email was sent to michel(a)p2pfoundation.net *why did I get this?* <https://postgrowthalliance.us2.list-manage.com/about?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5a…> unsubscribe from this list <https://postgrowthalliance.us2.list-manage.com/unsubscribe?u=dcc08996cc57fb…> update subscription preferences <https://postgrowthalliance.us2.list-manage.com/profile?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f…> Post Growth Institute · 1250 Siskiyou Boulevard · Ashland, OR 97520 · USA [image: Email Marketing Powered by MailChimp] <http://www.mailchimp.com/monkey-rewards/?utm_source=freemium_newsletter&utm…> -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Many states will have to grapple with hordes of residents seeking dry ground. But, as one expert says, ‘No state is unaffected by this’* *by Oliver Milman <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> Guardian UK 24 September 2018* After her house flooded for the third year in a row, Elizabeth Boineau was ready to flee. She packed her possessions into dozens of boxes, tried not to think of the mold and mildew-covered furniture and retreated to a second-floor condo that should be beyond the reach of pounding rains and swelling seas. Boineau is leaving behind a handsome, early 20th-century house in Charleston, South Carolina, the shutters painted in the city’s eponymous shade <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> of deep green. Last year, after Hurricane Irma introduced 8in of water into a home Boineau was still patching up from the last flood, local authorities agreed this historic slice of Charleston could be torn down. “I was sloshing through the water with my puppy dog, debris was everywhere,” she said. “I feel completely sunken. It would cost me around $500,000 to raise the house, demolish the first floor. I’m going to rent a place instead, on higher ground.” Millions of Americans will confront similarly hard choices as climate change conjures up brutal storms, flooding rains, receding coastlines and punishing heat. Many are already opting to shift to less perilous areas of the same city, or to havens in other states. Whole towns from Alaska to Louisiana are looking to relocate, in their entirety, to safer ground. *The era of climate migration is, virtually unheralded, already upon America. * The population shift gathering pace is so sprawling that it may rival anything in US history. “Including all climate impacts it isn’t too far-fetched to imagine something twice as large as the Dustbowl,” said Jesse Keenan, a climate adaptation expert at Harvard University, referencing the 1930s upheaval in which 2.5 million people moved from the dusty, drought-ridden plains to California. This enormous migration will probably take place over a longer period than the Dustbowl but its implications are both profound and opaque. It will plunge the US into an utterly alien reality. “It is very difficult to model human behaviour under such extreme and historically unprecedented circumstances,” Keenan admits. The closest analogue could be the Great Migration <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> – a period spanning a large chunk of the 20th century when about 6 million black people departed the Jim Crow south for cities in the north, midwest and west. By the end of this century, sea level rise alone could displace 13 million people, according to one study <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>, including 6 million in Florida. States including Louisiana, California, New York and New Jersey will also have to grapple with hordes of residents seeking dry ground. “There’s not a state unaffected by this,” said demographer Mat Hauer, lead author of the research, which is predicated on a severe 6ft sea level increase. There are established migration preferences for some places – south Florida to Georgia, New York to Colorado – but in many cases people would uproot to the closest inland city, if they have the means. “The Great Migration was out of the south into the industrialized north, whereas this is from every coastal place in the US to every other place in the US,” said Hauer. “Not everyone can afford to move, so we could end up with trapped populations that would be in a downward spiral. I have a hard time imagining what that future would be like.” Within just a few decades, hundreds of thousands of homes on US coasts will be chronically flooded <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>. By the end of the century, 6ft of sea level rise would redraw the coastline with familiar parts – such as southern Florida, chunks of North Carolina and Virginia, much of Boston, all but a sliver of New Orleans – missing. Warming temperatures will fuel monstrous hurricanes <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> – like the devastating triumvirate of Irma, Maria and Harvey in 2017, followed by Florence this year – that will scatter survivors in jarring, uncertain ways. The projections are starting to materialize in parts of the US, forming the contours of the climate migration to come. “I don’t see the slightest evidence that anyone is seriously thinking about what to do with the future climate refugee stream,” said Orrin Pilkey, professor emeritus of coastal geology at Duke University. “It boggles the mind to see crowds of climate refugees arriving in town and looking for work and food.” Pilkey’s new book – Sea Level Rise Along Americas Shores: The Slow Tsunami – envisions apocalyptic scenes where millions of people, largely from south Florida, will become “a stream of refugees moving to higher ground”. “They will not be the bedraggled families carrying their few possessions on their backs as we have seen in countless photos of people fleeing wars and ethnic cleansing, most recently in Myanmar and Syria,” Pilkey states in his book. “Instead, they will be well-off Americans driving to a new life in their cars, with moving trucks behind, carrying a lifetime of memories and possessions.” Dejected with frigid New York winters, Chase Twichell and her husband purchased a four-bedroom apartment in Miami Beach in 2011, with the plan of spending at least a decade basking in the sunshine. At first, keeping a pair of flip-flops on hand to deal with the flooded streets seemed an acceptable quirk, until the magnitude of the encroaching seas became apparent when the city spent $400m to elevate streets <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> near Twichell’s abode. Twichell began to notice water pumps were spewing plastic bags, condoms and chip packets into the bay. Friends’ balconies started getting submerged. Twichell, a poet, found apocalyptic themes creeping into her work. Last year, she sold the apartment to a French businessman and moved back to upstate New York. “It was like end of the world stuff,” she said. “It was crazy for us to have such a big investment in such a dangerous situation.” Her neighbours initially scolded her but now several are also selling up, fretting that the real estate and insurance markets for properties like theirs will seize up. “It was horrible but fascinating to see it,” Twichell said. “It’s like we got to see the future and it wasn’t pretty. It’s like a movie where there’s a terrible volcano that is destroying everything, only it’s much slower than that.” A sense of fatalism is also starting to grip some local officials. Philip Stoddard, mayor of South Miami, has seen a colleague, spooked by sea level rise, move to California and some neighbours sell their houses before an expected slump in prices. Stoddard and his wife regularly discuss buying a fallback property, perhaps in Washington DC. “Most people will wait for the problem to be bad to take action, that’s what I worry about,” he said. “We can buy a lot of time, but in the end we lose. The sea level will go over the tops of our buildings.” Sanitation is an immediate preoccupation for Stoddard, given the large proportion of residents who aren’t served by sewage works. “If you’re using a septic tank and your toilet starts to overflow into your bathroom because of water inundation, that’s a basis-of-civilization problem,” he said. “A medieval city wasn’t a nice smelling place and they had a lot of diseases.” Those living near the coasts will face pressures of the gradual (sea level rise) as well as dramatic (storms) nature but people inland will also be harried to move by climate change. Farming techniques and technology have improved immeasurably since the Dustbowl but rising temperatures are still expected <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> to diminish yields for crops such as maize, soybeans and wheat, prompting the departure <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> of younger people from farming. By 2050, Texas county, the largest <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> wheat-producing county in Oklahoma, could spend an extra 40 days a year above 90F (32C) compared with now. A study published last year <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> found that the economies of the southern states, along with parts of the west, will suffer disproportionately as temperatures rise. In what researchers called potentially one of the largest transfers of wealth in US history, the poorest third of counties are expected to lose up to 20% of their income unless greenhouse gas emissions are severely curtailed. Wealth, and potentially people, are expected to shift north and west. Meanwhile, cities already struggling with heat will see wealthy residents head for cooler climes. Last year, 155 people died in Phoenix due to a particularly fierce summer. Increasing heat will start testing the durability of the populace, even those shielded by air conditioning. In the western states, wildfires are getting larger, razing homes in ever more spectacular ways and choking thousands of people with carcinogenic smoke <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> . Further to the south, at the border, there are suggestions <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> that people from Central America are being nudged towards the US because of drought and hurricanes in their homelands, part of a trend that will see as many as <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> 300 million climate refugees worldwide by 2050. “People will get very grumpy and upset with very hot temperatures,” said Amir Jina, an environmental economist at the University of Chicago who co-authored the research on economic losses. “Even if you have air conditioning, some areas start to look less habitable. By the middle of the century parts of the south-west and south-east won’t look attractive to live in. “That insidious climate migration is the one we should worry about. The big disasters such as hurricanes will be obvious. It’s the pressures we don’t know or understand that will reshape population in the 21st century.” Prodded to name refuges in the US, researchers will point to Washington and Oregon in the Pacific north-west, where temperatures will remain bearable and disasters unlikely to strike. Areas close to the Great Lakes and in New England are also expected to prove increasingly attractive to those looking to move. By 2065, southern states are expected <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> to lose 8% of their US population share, while the north-east will increase by 9%. A recent study forecast that the population in the western half of the US will increase by more than 10% <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> over the next 50 years due to climate migration, largely from the south and midwest. But these population shifts are uncertain and are bound by a tangle of other factors and caveats. People will still largely follow paths guided by nearby family or suitable jobs. Even those who do want to move may find favoured locations too expensive. Some will just grimly hang on. “With property rights as strong as they are in the US, some people may choose to go down with the ship,” said Harvard’s Keenan. “The question is whether they have the means and the options to do anything else.” “People can usually cope with being a little less comfortable, but if you see repeated storms or severe damage to crops, that will trigger change,” said Solomon Hsiang, who researches how climate change will affect society at the University of California. “There will be pressure to move a little north. It won’t be everyone, though, it won’t be like the great migration of wildebeest in Africa. Whole cities picking up and moving would be hugely expensive.” Smaller towns are giving relocation a go, however. In 2016, the community of Isle de Jean Charles in Louisiana was the first place to be given federal money <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> to replant itself. The population, situated on an island being eaten away by the sea, is looking to move to a former sugar cane farm 30 miles inland. “We are called climate refugees but I hate that term,” said Chantal Comardelle, who grew up in the Isle de Jean Charles community. “We will be the first ones to face this in the modern US but we won’t be the last. It’s important for us to get it right so other communities know that they can do it, too.” About a dozen coastal towns in Alaska are also looking to relocate, as diminishing sea ice exposes them to storms and rising temperatures thaw the very ground beneath them. One, Newtok, has identified a new site and has some federal funding <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> to begin uprooting itself. A buyout of damaged and at-risk homes has already occurred in New York City’s Staten Island in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, while certain flood-prone houses in Houston, pummeled by Hurricane Harvey last year, are also being purchased and razed. But the cost of doing this for all at-risk Americans would be eye-watering. Estimates range from $200,000 to $1m per person to undertake a relocation. If 13 million people do have to move, it seems fantastical to imagine $13tn, or even a significant fraction of this amount, being spent by governments to ease the way. “As a country we aren’t set up to deal with slow-moving disasters like this, so people around the country are on their own,” said Joel Clement, a former Department of the Interior official who worked on the relocation of Alaskan towns. “In the Arctic I’m concerned we’ve left it too late. Younger people have left because they know the places are doomed. These towns won’t be relocated within five years and I’m sure there will be a catastrophic storm up there. My hope is no lives will be lost.” Ultimately, the US will have to choose what it wants to defend and hope its ingenuity outstrips the environmental changes ranged against it. Not everyone will be able to shelter behind fortifications like the ‘big U <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>’ planned to defend lower Manhattan. Wrenching decisions will have to be made as to what and where will be sacrificed. “We won’t see whole areas abandoned but neighborhoods will get sparse and wild looking, the tax base will start to crumble,” said Stoddard, mayor of South Miami. “We don’t have the laws to deal with that sort of piecemeal retreat. It’s magical thinking to think someone else will buy out your property. “We need a plan as to what will be defended because at the moment the approach is that some kid in a garage will come with a solution. There isn’t going to be a mop and bucket big enough for this problem.” Original Article Link <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Straight Talk* *Let’s call it: 30 years of above average temperatures means the climate has changed* <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Disaster Relief Call* *Drought puts over 10-million children in East Africa at risk of malnutrition and disease* <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *"It is easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism." * *- Anonymous* *Copyright © 2018 Rainbow Warriors International, All rights reserved.* Because we have borrowed this earth from our children... *Our mailing address is:* Rainbow Warriors International 151 Lower Main Road Observatory Cape Town, Western Cape 7925 South Africa Add us to your address book <//facebook.us8.list-manage.com/vcard?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef312&id=1691503663> Want to change how you receive these emails? Fwd: FROM RAJANI: INTERVIEW WITH MCPHERSON, RESENT TO CORRECT OMISSION

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: r kanth <involutegandhian(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Sep 21, 2018 at 5:05 AM Subject: FROM RAJANI: INTERVIEW WITH MCPHERSON, RESENT TO CORRECT OMISSION To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> *IDEAS FOR OUR TIMES *(4) *On Imminent Human Extinction* *An Interview with Dr Guy McPherson* * This is the Fourth in a series of interviews exploring New Ideas that may, * * perhaps, serve as salves for our troubled times**.* [*Interviewed by Professor Rajani Kanth]* **the italicised emphases* *are the Interviewer’s* *1. **Please explain the environmental threat to human existence you perceive that has brought you much notoriety in recent times.* First, a little perspective. As with all other species in planetary history, except the few remaining, our species will go extinct. We are in the midst of the Sixth Mass Extinction. As with the five prior such events, most species on Earth will be driven to extinction in a relatively short period of time. The post-Permian mass extinction caused the extinction of more than 90% of the species on Earth about 252 million years ago. It was the worst of the prior mass extinction events. As with all five of the prior mass extinction events, Earth’s recovery required several million years to become vibrant, verdant, and characterized by an abundance of multicellular organisms. The current event is underlain by atmospheric carbon emissions about 10 times faster than those during the post-Permian event. It is no surprise that the ongoing Sixth Mass Extinction is proceeding an order of magnitude faster the post-Permian mass extinction. According to an August 2010 report from the United Nations, an estimated 150-200 species are driven to extinction every day. The actual figure exceeds 200 species daily during the last few years. In my case, the notoriety comes from my prediction that *Homo sapiens* will go extinct by 2026. Thus will we join the six other species within the genus *Homo* that have already gone extinct. *Specifically, I predict that there will be no humans on Earth by 2026* , based on projections of near-term planetary temperature rise and the demise of myriad species that support our own existence. *2. **How does that differ from more mainstream views of climate change extant today?* My view differs from the conventional, conservative view only with respect to *timing.* Every conservation biologist knows our species will join others in extinction when we lose habitat that supports our species. Yet, doubtless due to a combination of personal and professional reasons, few other scientists are willing to connect the dots leading to our imminent demise. Among the personal reasons are parenthood. Amongst the professional reasons are the loss of support for one’s privileged position. *3. **How, and when, and why, did you come to believe in this thesis?* My lifelong pursuit of evidence, combined with my knowledge of conservation biology, lead me to believe we face extinction in the near future. Conservation biology rests on the pillars of speciation (when and with what predecessors a species comes into existence), extinction (when the last member of a species dies), and habitat (the many factors necessary to support the populations of a species, including clean air, potable water, healthy food, and the means to maintain body temperature within a narrow range). As with other species, human animals depend upon* habitat* for our survival. More than 15 years ago, I reached the conclusion that the last member of*Homo sapiens* would die by 2030. I was co-editing a book about climate change at the time, and the evidence overwhelmed me. The conclusion was so disconcerting, I did not write or talk about the subject for a few years. Less than two years after reaching the conclusion about near-term human extinction, I discovered the “hail Mary” pass that I believed would ward off extinction for a few more generations: global peak oil, or net energy decline. Alas, passing the global peak for conventional oil in 2005 or 2006 did not cause the collapse necessary to turn off the heat engine of civilization. And our contemporary knowledge of global dimming, reported in the journal literature only since December 2011, indicates that collapse will actually accelerate human extinction relative to maintaining the omnicidal heat engine of civilization. More than a decade ago, I began speaking publicly about human extinction. For a few years, I adhered to the conventional notion that our species will go extinct in about 100 years. As evidence accumulated, I shifted the timeline back to 2050, 2035, 2030, and ultimately 2025 for human extinction. Our species will lose global habitat before 2025, thus marking the point of functional extinction. A few members of our species will persist beyond this loss of habitat for a few years, and the final members of*Homo sapiens* will die lonely, hungry, thirsty, and confused. *4. **What scientific evidence, either from your own research or from others, have you drawn this conclusion from (in layman’s terms if possible)?* I routinely describe *two paradoxes*, and the fact that we are in the midst of the Sixth Mass Extinction. First , the paradoxes. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded in their vaunted fifth assessment that nearly all scenarios between now and 2100 require large-scale sequestration and storage of atmospheric carbon dioxide. This “geoengineering” must be accomplished at a tremendous scale if we are to survive. There is no known technology by which such an effort can be conducted, as pointed out by the National Academy of Sciences of the United States and a European body of similar stature. In short, fantasy technology is required. The second paradox combines our knowledge of greenhouse gases and the aerosol masking effect (aka global dimming). As indicated by the Laws of Thermodynamics, civilization is a heat engine, even if civilization is underlain by “renewable” technology. Yet, turning off the heat engine of civilization heats the planet even faster as a result of the aerosol masking effect. Industrial activity pours particulates into the atmosphere, and these particulates – notably sulfates produced by burning coal – act as an “umbrella” to keep incoming sunlight from striking the surface of the planet. These particulates are constantly falling out of the atmosphere, and industrial activity is constantly adding them. While the greenhouse gases produced by industrialization are acting as “blankets” to hold in the heat, the particulates produced by industrialization are acting as “umbrellas” to keep the heat from striking Earth. *Damned if we do, and damned if we don’t,* civilization is simultaneously destroying most life on Earth while also serving as a shield to protect most life on Earth. The abrupt rise in temperature resulting from the near-term demise of industrial civilization will proceed too rapidly for most species to “keep up” with the rate of change. The plants that feed us cannot move. We cannot move them fast enough, and they depend upon unique environmental conditions (e.g., temperature and precipitation regime, extant soil, co-dependent species). As if two paradoxes are not enough, we are in the midst of the Sixth Mass Extinction on Earth. Destroying habitat for the species that keep us alive will cause our extinction, too. The ongoing loss of habitat for human animals will accelerate, thus leading to our near-term demise. I have provided supporting details within a long essay at Nature Bats Last ( https://guymcpherson.com/climate-chaos/climate-change-summary-and-update/) This long essay barely mentions the likelihood and consequences of an ice-free Arctic Ocean. As Finland’s President Niinistö has been pointing out for more than a year, an ice-free Arctic will lead quickly to loss of habitat for humans on Earth (e.g., http://finlandtoday.fi/president-niinisto-in-north-russia-if-we-lose-the-ar…) The near-term blue-ocean event was projected to occur in 2016 *+* 3 years by a paper in the 2012 edition of*Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences*( https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/suppl/10.1146/annurev-earth-042711-105345 ). *5. **If so, how is it that most of your fellow-scientists have missed what is so ap* -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens
