Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Or take the time and read some very old documented evidence available at a library near you= but you may need to stay there awhile on microfiche. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Janssen Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:39 PM To: P2P Foundation mailing list Subject: Re: [P2P-F] Fw: Info On Sun, Oct 23, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Natalie Golovin <10natalie(a)cox.net> wrote: > The European Tribes treated the Natives no worse than they treated each > other. Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. Sorry.... marcos _______________________________________________ P2P Foundation - Mailing list http://www.p2pfoundation.net https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation

Fwd: [CommonGood] political strategy
by Michel Bauwens 30 Jun '17

30 Jun '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Birgit Daiber <bir.dai(a)hotmail.com> Date: Fri, Jun 30, 2017 at 12:08 PM Subject: [CommonGood] political strategy To: "commongood(a)listi.jpberlin.de" <commongood(a)listi.jpberlin.de> Dear Friends and Colleagues, I had the opportunity to participate in a very inspiring meeting of the Transform-Europe-Working Group on Commons. Together with Fundació Alternativa (Barcelona) the Working Group organised a preparatory meeting in Barcelona on June 16 to discuss political strategies for the implementation of „Commons as an new political practice and concept to decommodify and transform society“. The participants decided to concentrate on the political and strategic context of Commons as a complex political vision for the transformation of society. The working group will address two essential dimensions: 1) Politics, institutions and Common 2) Property, right of use and Common The working group will prepare a paper and present it to the Conference the European Left is organising on Nov. 10/11 in Marseille. The aim is to motivate EL to take a clear standpoint on Commons in their programme for the next European elections. Furthermore a kind of checklist for candidates could be developed to test how far they respond to the needs of the Commons-communities. In their initial text for the Barcelona-meeting the working group pointed out: *“Commons as political subject* In recent times, we have been witnessing a redefinition of the battle against privatization and the dismantling of the public sector, ranging from the re-municipalisation of water, transport, education and energy, to the defence of the territory against environmental degradation. This battle is premised on our ability to shed light on the greed of neoliberalism and on its depredation of everything that has been collectively built or defended up until today and considered of public interest to our countries. This is the reason why in Italy, just as in Cochabamba and Ireland, the defence of public water has become a symbol of revolt against the interests of multinationals and financial speculation, bringing forward a notion that is becoming increasingly widespread: the notion of the commons. Over and above its historical definition and the pre-modern laws that recognized its utility and importance, this term’s significance for our day resides in its capacity to redefine the terrain of the political battle for a democratic transformation and bring forward new subjects involved in this transformation. For this reason, alongside the Marxist analysis of the conflict between capital and labour, which remains valuable insofar as it has production as its focal point, recent historical developments necessitate new tools and approaches, which enable us to interpret the passage of history in order to build effective responses. Globalized capitalism entails the dismantling of state control, and with it the democratic relations that, to a certain degree, prevailed until a few decades ago. The struggle for democratic control and the protection of collective interest have found in the notion of the commons a valuable tool of analysis for the re-composition of this interest. As transform! Europe we have been following the evolution of the idea of the commons since its very beginning. Through our participation in relevant debates within the left, we have realised that is very difficult to reach conclusions that are unified and harmonious on this subject matter. Although many single-issue movements have developed on a national and international level, these rarely see themselves as a unified movement; their many battles, big and small, are, more often than not, conditioned by their local or thematic context. This is the reason why we have begun to explore ways of weaving theoretical and practical approaches to the commons into a wider struggle for social change. This is a process which aims to rethink the “class composition”, which in the past developed around the workers’ movement, but should now be re-examined in the light of the new forms of production and reproduction that have emerged in the last few decades. After the first meeting in Paris in 2014, we met again in Rome in 2016 to examine the phenomenon of the recuperated factories (self-management) and the social re-appropriation processes that have been emerging, also in the field of labour, in countries affected by delocalization and the dismantling of the productive infrastructure.” Other good news: Ive Ivsic reported on the success of their “Zagreb in common” initiative, creating a common list with participants from the left, trade unions and local commons-initiatives, being able to win seats in the local elections, both, on municipal level (8%) and district-level. Elisabetta Cangelosi could report a similar sucess from “Sinistra Comune” at local elections in Palermo (7%). And colleagues from “Fundació Alternativa” gave a report on the conference “Cities without fear” in Barcelona just one week before the working group’s meeting with participants from more than 150 cities organised by “Barcelone en Comú”, their slogan was: Democracy was born on local level, and that’s where we can win it back”. TNI’s annual State of Power reports have, since their launch in 2012, become an important reference point for citizens, activists and academics concerned with understanding the nature of power in our globalised world in order to inform struggles for justice. With a mixture of compelling infographics and insightful essays, State of Power has examined dimensions of power (economic, political, social, cultural), exposed the key players who control power, and highlighted movements of counter-power seeking to transform our world. Last year’s State of Power <http://www.tni.org/stateofpower2017> was widely praised for its amazing thought-provoking essays and brilliant art. This year's seventh edition will focus on counter-power. Counter-power As we mark in 2018 the 50th anniversary of the 1968 uprisings, the world is experiencing a new wave of protests and resistance by social movements. This visible rise of popular mobilisation has emerged in the context of major social and ecological upheaval and political and economic uncertainty. Today’s movements of counter-power must contend with the rise of dangerous demagogic leaders, using a language of hate and politics of fear, as well as the challenge of confronting the unprecedented concentration of power in the hands of transnational corporations and a small elite. Many movements are also going beyond resistance, seeking to build transformative practices, particularly at local level, that can reflect values of solidarity and cooperation, rather than competition and greed. But what is the nature of this counter-power? What is needed for it to work? What blocks effective counter-power? And how can it be best harnessed not just for resistance but also long-term transformation? Becoming-common. City administrations as practitioners of the commons in Europe
by Michel Bauwens 29 Jun '17

29 Jun '17

-- Practitioners’ Lab chaired by Ana Méndez de Andés: *Becoming-common. City administrations as practitioners of the commons in Europe* This is more or less the same group of people that we brought together for ‘Innovative Citymakers meeting’ during ECF’s 2017 Idea Camp in Madrid past March: http://www.culturalfoundation.eu/idea-camp-2017/ This Practitioners Lab presents different practices developed by local governments in the production and management of public resources that are understood as commons. By looking at projects that incorporate the active involvement of the city inhabitants in the definition and management of public resources such as cultural spaces, city budgeting or administrative structures, we would like to start a deliberation about the role the public administrations as pro-active practitioners of the commons. We aim, at the same time, to illustrate how this becoming-common of the public requires a paradigm shift and the incorporation of a new set of social and administrative practices. Our Practitioner's Lab has been scheduled for Friday July 14, 14:00-15:30, Academiegebouw, Belle van Zuylenzaal (ground floor) [Session 13-N] Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Laurence -- *Peter Waterman obituary* *Laurence Cox* My friend Peter Waterman, who has died aged 81, lived many lives, as a communist activist, labour studies academic and global justice networker, among others. He was born in the East End of London. His father, Alec, was a Polish Jew who changed his name from Nasibirski to Wasserman, then Waterman; the family of his mother, Ray, had used the surnames Shatistky and Gold. Alec worked in many trades before managing Collet’s bookshop and selling homeware. Ray was a secretary and author of two semi-autobiographical novels. After attending local schools and joining a journalism course at Regent Street Polytechnic (now part of the University of Westminster) in 1954, Peter became English editor and chief subeditor of World Student News for the International Union of Students in Prague (1955-58). Following national service he married Ruthie Kupferschmidt whom he met on an Aldermaston march. The couple had two children and settled in Oxford. Peter took an Oxford University diploma at Ruskin College and a degree in philosophy, politics and economics, supporting his family with a year’s truck-driving in between. He returned to Prague to work for the World Federation of Trade Unions <http://www.wftucentral.org/> (1966-69), but after witnessing the Soviet crushing of the Prague Spring, he “left both the communist world and the world of communism”. Peter then took a master’s degree in social science, undertaking West African studies at the University of Birmingham, with a thesis on the Nigerian trade union movement. He worked at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria (1970-72) before moving to the Hague, where he worked until he retired as a senior lecturer at the Institute of Social Studies <https://www.iss.nl/>, specialising in unions of the developing world and other social movements. Ruthie worked as a Montessori teacher and, later, an artist. The couple separated in 1986 and Peter decided to engage seriously with feminism. In 1990 he began a relationship with the international feminist writer and activist Virginia (Gina) Vargas, and Peru <https://www.theguardian.com/world/peru> became his second home. Retiring in 1998, Peter remained involved with global labour solidarity initiatives. An early enthusiast for the internet and its possibilities for activist communication, he made most of his writing available free online. His work has also been published in 10 languages and he was invited to speak at activist and academic events around the world. Peter and Gina married in 2012 and he published his autobiography in 2014. In recent years Peter was active in the social movement journal Interface, with the Indian Institute for Critical Action-Centre in Movement <http://www.cacim.net/twiki/tiki-index.php?page=AboutUs>, the Global Labour Journal <https://escarpmentpress.org/globallabour>, and Democracia Global, in Peru, among others. He was independent-minded and provocative, but always funny and charming. Peter is survived by Gina, his children Danny and Tamara, and his grandchildren, Joëlle and Nick. ________________________________________ ** Inspired by the World Social Forum, WSMDiscuss – the successor to a list named ‘WSFDiscuss’ started in 2005 - is an open, unmoderated, and self-organising forum for the exchange of information and views on the experience, practice, and theory of social and political movement at any level (local, national, regional, and global), including the World Social Forum. That’s why EDA is focusing on both “community-building and empirical research in the protection of declining resources,” says renowned economist James Quilligan in his groundbreaking work on the earth’s “carrying capacity” (included in this issue). “We want to see carrying capacity — *the maximum number of people which can be supported by the resources available within an environment* — become a practical and enduring foundation for social policy,” says James. We have set up a team that will develop a roadmap for the steps that we believe need to be taken. We’ll be sharing this with you soon and inviting you to participate in its development. A clear statement of what will be expected of committee members and background reading material will be included. Thanks to all who have responded so far! *CARRYING CAPACITY: WE NO LONGER HAVE THE LUXURY OF TIME* BY JAMES QUILLIGAN *OUR PLANET IS IN ECOLOGICAL OVERSHOOT* Earth is exceeding its ability to replenish its own resources. Each year, human beings consume our natural stocks at about 160% of their sustainable yield. Obviously, we cannot continue to use resources faster than the planet can replenish them without serious ecological and socioeconomic consequences. *Economic Democracy Advocates* recognizes that the next economy will have to balance the needs of Earth’s expanding population with the shrinking level of resources which are available to everyone. This dynamic equilibrium is called *carrying capacity*. It is a middle path between the faster, geometric growth rates of human population, individual consumption and economic production, and the slower, arithmetic replenishment rates of water, food and fossil fuels. *WHY THE 'MARKET MYTH' IS ENDING IN ECOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL CHAOS* Historical records, from the Indus Valley and Mesopotamia to early civilizations in the North and South Americas, provide numerous examples of carrying capacity practiced successfully by people in local settings over long periods. Yet, as towns developed and began to control the raw materials and labor of their countrysides, profitable strategies for resource extraction, production and trade gradually displaced the agrarian customs of living sustainably within the cycles of nature. During the past five centuries, these same methods for social control — enclosing the commons, devising unequal trade and enforcing those restrictions through the armed might of governments — were scaled up to the global level. Following the earlier pattern, imperial centers of capital controlled the resource- and labor-rich fringes of their rural empires through iron-handed colonialism. The latest chapter in this saga — of enterprising groups claiming exclusive property rights over those who live and work amid nature’s capital — is harder to see, but still deeply inequitable. Everywhere now in the world, decentralized communities struggle to reclaim the social ownership and natural wealth of their commons from centralized corporations and their shareholders, who produce and trade these same commodities virtually unnoticed across vast distances. There are no easy or familiar solutions for these non-regenerative, structural imbalances. Except for small groups of indigenous peoples, farmers and land planners from whom we still can learn, *carrying capacity has never been a core part of our conventional economic system. *Somehow, civilization neglected to measure the differences between the needs of an increasing population and the diminishing resources available for each person. Somewhere along the line, we forgot how to inventory and quantify our commons and plan for the long-term future. *WE ARE WHAT WE MEASURE* This is why EDA employs the metrics of carrying capacity to prevent renewable and non-renewable resources from being consumed beyond their maximum sustainable yield. *The goal is for renewable resources to be harvested or used at the same rate at which they replenish themselves, and for non-renewable resources to be extracted and consumed by the present generation at a significantly slower rate to preserve these commons for future generations. * PHOTOGRAPH BY RANDY SARVIS Many people today are reconsidering the self-sufficiency and sustainability of their own neighborhoods. There’s renewed interest in the re-localization of resources and avid curiosity about the democratic, cooperative management of local and regional commons. Particularly as climate change creates the possibility of extreme storms, wildfires, floods, rising sea levels, drought, crop failures and other economic uncertainties, people want to know how to make the living systems on which they depend more resilient in the face of such risks. *'SUPPLY AND DEMAND' IS NOT AN ORGANIC CYCLE* Regrettably, unlike any previous era in history, when new ideas for resource management might be tested over long centuries or even millennia, *humanity no longer has the luxury of time.* What we know now — by comparing present water, food and energy yields with their availability for the world’s population — is stunning. *The next three or four generations represent our last chance to safeguard the Earth’s essential hydrological, nitrogen and carbon cycles from the destructive business cycle of production, trade and consumption.* By the end of this century, it will be nearly impossible for the human race to transform this failed system of resource extraction and predatory exchange, and embark on an ecological path which is not plagued by economic scarcity and social unrest. *NEED MEASURED IS NEED MET* This is why EDA is dedicated to both community-building and empirical research in the protection of declining resources. We’re measuring the sustainable yields of American counties and bioregions as a way to define, apportion and distribute what every person needs, and ensure that the commons are healthy and accessible for future generations. At the same time, EDA is introducing this evidence-based framework to a broad constituency across the United States through research, education, training, advocacy and legislation. We want to see carrying capacity — computing the maximum number of people which can be supported by the resources available within an environment — become a practical and enduring foundation for social policy. Please join Economic Democracy Advocates and assist us in this important work. We urge you to learn about the opportunities available and to engage according to your own level of interest. *Contact the EDA Carrying Capacity Team:* Patti Ellis: PattiE(a)EconomicDemocracyAdvocates.org James Quilligan: JamesQ(a)EconomicDemocracyAdvocates.org <http://economicdemocracyadvocates.us14.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=acd14…> The days of reliance on fossil fuel for our energy source are quickly coming to an end. And, as a result, we’re beginning to see a huge push in research efforts to explore innovations that can make an impact on energy creation and distribution. The five clean energy innovations that are outlined in this post are in various stages of commercial development, but each gives us an idea of the kinds of things that researchers are working to bring to the world. It is an interesting time to be alive, as these new technologies are introduced every day, and their potential for making an impact on the world in the future are coming a little closer. *Read more* <http://economicdemocracyadvocates.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acd145…> <http://economicdemocracyadvocates.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acd145…> The United States of America now finds itself in some pretty unusually company joining only Syria and Nicaragua in declining involvement in the Paris Climate Agreement. This withdrawal which President Trump claimed to benefit the American worker is extremely short-sighted. The opportunities for American workers in new alternative technologies offer new jobs at an ever-increasing rate. In California, green jobs are providing the state hundreds of thousands of new jobs as it moves toward an aggressive goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045. New jobs and renewable energy are bolstering California’s economy while President Trump focuses on old practices that produced elevated carbon emissions and fewer jobs. *Read more* <http://economicdemocracyadvocates.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acd145…> <http://economicdemocracyadvocates.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acd145…> Communities of Columbus, Ohio are using urban agriculture to promote sustainable development and increase access to locally grown food. We simply turn on the faucet in our sinks, and as if by magic, out flows our water – clean and ready for a drink. This article helps us to remove some of that magic by giving us a clear picture of how water is transported from its source to the tap. The example we’re provided with is Lake Mead water delivered to Las Vegas. It’s really a remarkable trip – worth following – and makes us appreciate how much goes on to serve us every day in delivering this vital resource. *Read more* <http://economicdemocracyadvocates.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acd145…> [image: image] <http://economicdemocracyadvocates.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acd145…> [image: image] <http://economicdemocracyadvocates.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acd145…> [image: image] <your(a)email.com> *Copyright © 2017 Economic Democracy Advocates, All rights reserved.* *Our mailing address is:* Economic Democracy Advocates 1187 Coast Village Rd.
