---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Krystian Woznicki via Commoning <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> Date: Wed, Jun 7, 2017 at 3:06 PM Subject: [commoning] SNOWDEN FILES AS ART + COMMONS > new BG book out now! To: commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org Dear commoners, four years ago the very first news about the @snowden files broke. The new Berliner Gazette book shows how artists have been working with them, transforming them into commons. More details below. Please re-tweet this: https://twitter.com/berlinergazette/status/871673242074968064 Please share this info on other social networks incl. the link: http://diamondpaper.net/title_26 --- A FIELD GUIDE TO THE SNOWDEN FILES Media, Arts, Archives 2013-2017 Ed. Magdalena Taube and Krystian Woznicki 168 pages, including images 21 × 29.7 cm, paperback, English Diamondpaper 2017 | ISBN 978-3-9817925-1-5 | 35 € A FIELD GUIDE TO THE SNOWDEN FILES is the first book to critically engage with artists responding to the NSA-files leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden. Considering the most relevant contexts in which the files have 'surfaced' (including media and archives), it reflects on how artists are deploying the files as raw material. Contributors include Zeljko Blace, Andrew Clement, Colnate Group, Naomi Colvin, Simon Denny, Corinna Haas, Christoph Hochhäusler, Evan Light, Geert Lovink, M.C. McGrath, Henrik Moltke, Deborah Natsios, Julian Oliver, Trevor Paglen, Laura Poitras, Norman Posselt, SAZAE bot, Stefan Tiron, University of the Phoenix, Andi Weiland, Maria Xynou and John Young. The book looks at the various civil society actors who have been appropriating the historic leak and orders their responses according to contexts in which the Snowden documents have been published: media, art and archives. The different approaches share the common goal of rendering the documents accessible – to both present and future audiences. Reaching out to the general public, they have also tasked themselves with reflecting on the complex political, social and technological realities that the Snowden documents have helped to uncover. The Snowden disclosures have triggered debates on democracy, civil rights, the internet and intelligence agencies all around the world. These debates have led to a number of political changes, including negative ones: e.g., consolidating the delusion of cyber-security. Meanwhile, the documents that triggered the debates remain arcane for the general public, as well as for many experts. And it is not ensured that the documents will be preserved for posterity or for those writing our history. The book takes this problem as its starting point and situates the historic leak in the context of civic appropriation. Foregrounded are artists who test the files as material and, by creating works, transform them into commons. A FIELD GUIDE TO THE SNOWDEN FILES has been conceived in the context of SIGNALS, a project by Berliner Gazette e. V. which was funded by the Capital Cultural Fund. The book is published in conjunction with SIGNALS. AN EXHIBITION OF THE SNOWDEN FILES IN ART, MEDIA AND ARCHIVES, September 12-26, 2017, at Diamondpaper Studio, curated by Magdalena Taube and Krystian Woznicki. Fwd: [Commons Transition] Sandstorm abandons "open core" and becomes a community supported project

I think this is a great thing for the project, and for the world. Sandstorm realised that they couldn’t build a commons-based business by selling stuff to “enterprise” (corporations). Even Enspiral are sometimes willing to use proprietary freeware (GITHub, Slack, Google Docs, Trello) rather than self-hosting libre replacements, despite the clash of values involved. Why would profit-centred companies spend money on a (partially) free code service when they can outsourcing their computing to The Stacks, and get a proprietary service gratis? The “open core” business model is the worst of both worlds, and it’s not the future of funding free code development. Sandstorm would be better off looking at paying for dev costs by collecting regular, small contributions for sysadmins running their software, and the end users. There are now a number of libre platforms for managing this, including Gratipay <https://www.loomio.org/ahoy/messages/OKJld9uXcEqzxzAtKMvybbaCOMfLWTnW/click…>, LiberaPay <https://www.loomio.org/ahoy/messages/OKJld9uXcEqzxzAtKMvybbaCOMfLWTnW/click…>, OpenCollective <https://www.loomio.org/ahoy/messages/OKJld9uXcEqzxzAtKMvybbaCOMfLWTnW/click…>, and Salt <https://www.loomio.org/ahoy/messages/OKJld9uXcEqzxzAtKMvybbaCOMfLWTnW/click…> (a BountrySource service). — Reply to this email directly or view it on www.loomio.org <https://www.loomio.org/ahoy/messages/OKJld9uXcEqzxzAtKMvybbaCOMfLWTnW/click…>. Digital Needs and the Commons under Informational Capitalism

Digital Needs and the Commons under Informational Capitalism A WIAS research seminar with talks by Sebastian Sevignani and Benjamin Birkinbine Tue, June 6, 18:00-20:00 309 Regent Street, W1B 2HW, London Boardroom Organised by the Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies (WIAS) Registration: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/digital-needs-and-the-commons-under-informat… How can we define informational “needs?” What type of information is necessary for human development, survival, and social progress? What is in this context the role of the information commons and digital commons? In what ways does capitalism restrict the fulfillment of these needs? In this seminar, Dr. Sebastian Sevignani reflects on what needs are, how they develop, and offers proposals for what informational needs might be. Dr. Benjamin Birkinbine focuses specifically on the informational commons as one way to provide for such needs, while highlighting the contradictions that these movements face under capitalism. The overall goal for this discussion is to work toward a critical theory of needs under informational capitalism. Benjamin J Birkinbine is Assistant Professor of Media Studies at University of Nevada, Reno. Whilst based at WIAS as international research fellow, he works towards a critical theory of the digital commons. Sebastian Sevignani is Assistant Professor at the Department for General Sociology and Sociological Theory, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. As WIAS international research fellow he works on foundations of a theory of digital needs. For updates, subscribe to WIAS-newsletter: https://www.westminster.ac.uk/newsletter

Fwd: Pixelache Helsinki 2017 Festival Announcement: Local & Decentralised, 22-24.9. at Suvilahti cultural complex.
by Michel Bauwens 02 Jun '17

02 Jun '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: andrew gryf paterson <agryfp(a)gmail.com> andrew --------------------------------------- LOCAL & DECENTRALISED Pixelache Festival in Suvilahti cultural complex, Helsinki, 22nd-24th September 2017 After the 2015 festival that travelled through Living Spaces, and the 2016 festival delving deep into Interfaces for Empathy, Pixelache festival 2017 gathers stories of Local & Decentralised governance. Tapping in to the shift from centralised -capital based economies to de-centralised -peer based resource distribution, we offer the festival as a meeting point for local initiatives working on similar experiences. The festival is titled Local & Decentralised and it happens from 22.9 to 24.9 in Suvilahti, Helsinki. Local and decentralised governance seems to happen when collective design and a tangible group effort come together. In order to decentralise temporally the festival and to materialize the festival theme itself, reflecting perhaps on the current edification of Helsinki, from the 15.9 to 21.9 Suvilahti hosts a model construction site by teams participating in the Recycling Olympic Games, who build the main venue of the festival. These new spatial configurations along with existing DIY area such as the skate-park coagulate together with the festival participants to create fluid places where knowledge can emerge and where it can be applied. Pre-festival and festival activities will happen also at Oranssi premises from 18.9 to 24.9. The role of Oranssi organisation, of Suvilahti permanent tenants and of Pixelache members' contributions as part of the main program, is an important element for the identity of Local & Decentralised. Major developments of decentralization can and do occur: currency, energy, resources, and feelings are being decentralised and distributed. These developments bring about problems that cannot be solved on a purely conceptual level; they need to be embodied and lived through for a shift to yet different models. Thus fear of the unforeseen and unpredictable must also be addressed. >From the festival activities stories emerge that depict how governance functions between civil society, individual initiatives and government, and also how citizens themselves coagulate into structures where governance happens locally, and where we can come to terms with inefficiencies, passivity, interests, time, jargon. How is it possible to express a multiplicity of will, is the present practice of a State effective enough to convey it? Often the movements towards local and decentralised structures are related to privatisation in economical models, how can diverse collective interest meet on economical terms? Can we be local and decentralised and yet be connected globally, micro-organisms breathing within a vast complex macro system? Local & Decentralised festival does not let you down, it will be your local event to differentiate consensus from silence: talking of ecological issues, promoting visual culture as a shield against pessimism, presenting how democracy benefits from digital media -or not, playing games to prove that we are as connected as we are, offering workshops to learn again the pleasure of learning things together, finding music and contemporary art that make sense more than science, and divulging science as creative as drama. The festival is free entrance and suitable for families. Fwd: "Climate Risking the Trump Brand"
by Michel Bauwens 02 Jun '17

02 Jun '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Hazel Henderson <hazel.henderson(a)ethicalmarkets.com> Date: Thu, Jun 1, 2017 at 9:17 PM Subject: "Climate Risking the Trump Brand" Backing out of the U S Commitment to the 2015 UN Climate Accords signed in Paris by 195 nations, Trump himself risks derailing his own brand and Trump-branded properties worldwide. This additional unforced error, warned against by his top advisors, from Rex Tillerson, Gary Cohn and a host of corporate chiefs to Ivanka and Jared Kushner. Trump seems influenced by the Breitbart alumni in the White House, Steve Bannon, Jeff Session's henchman Stephen Miller, Sebastian Gorka and others. Breitbart's fake news operation and the Trump campaign, funded by Renaissance Technologies boss Robert Mercer, also serves as an outlet for RT and other Russian propaganda. Trump's backsliding on the UN Climate deal has revealed the extent of these perverse influences on the foreign policy of the USA. We may see resignations of some of his still respected team: Secretary of Defense General Mattis, National Security Advisor General McMasters and General Kelly at Homeland Security. Even Chief Economic advisor Gary Cohn may be embarrassed enough to return to his top post at Goldman Sachs. The 200 nations still committed to the climate agreement are ranged against the 3 defectors, Syria, Nicaragua and the USA. This seems to be the last global stand of the fossilized Industrial Era sectors and their cheerleaders in the USA, OPEC, Russia, Saudi Arabia and other oil states, shale frackers, their foolish financiers and coal interests around the world. Meanwhile as we have forecast in our 2017 Green Transition Scoreboard <http://4a5qvh23tbek30e0mg42uq87.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/…> ® tracking private investments as green sectors worldwide since 2007----now a cumulative $8.1 trillion----the cleaner green transition to inclusive renewable energy and circular resource-using economies is unstoppable. Even the Financial Times <https://thinkprogress.org/renewable-energy-is-unstoppable-declares-financia…> agrees along with the Economist. So a Trump unforced error in pulling out of the climate deal simply hurts the US position and cedes the competitive advantage in the race to complete the global green transition to China, Europe, Latin America and the solar-rich countries of Africa and Asia. The 3 million jobs already powering the US green transition will continue growing, but more will be created elsewhere----so far with 8.5 million worldwide. While the White House is consumed by the Russian and financial scandals and the Republican dominated Congress is laying low, the millions of voters who opposed Trump are re-grouping and a small band of citizens has an appeal at the Supreme Court to appoint a "Special Master" to investigate the Russian hacking of the US, in addition to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. Meanwhile the growing group of medical and psychological experts continue to call for closer examination of Trump's medical records, to assess whether he is capable of continuing to exercise the responsibilities of his office. As an immigrant, naturalized as a US citizen in 1963, I pray for my beloved adopted country. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens
