USi will be represented across every social media stream from Weibo to YouTube to Facebook to Google+ to Twitter - and many more. The focal point of our multimedia activities will be our website <http://usilive.org/wp-content/plugins/civicrm/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=458&…> which will deliver news, information and campaigns from a trade union perspective. Central to our efforts is working with trade unions and aligned organisations to provide a service that delivers a trade union message and facilitates the power of social media to augment organising efforts at a ground level. USi’s new platform will result in *millions* of people visiting our streams every year. USi Ireland is building solidarity by creating a space for workers and communities to share their issues and dreams while sharing stories of resistance to neo-liberalism. USi News UK is reporting the news from a trade union perspective across the UK, and USiLive continues to strengthen internationalism using the latest technology and social media. The activities of the project are not restricted to driving change via online platforms. USi launched the Blood Bricks campaign, working to end modern day slavery and unionise thousands of workers in the brick kilns of India. We supported Ruins <http://usilive.org/wp-content/plugins/civicrm/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=460&…>, the Greek human rights documentary exposing the far rightwing attempts to demonise the vulnerable and marginalised. It will be a central part of our work to campaign for trade union and human rights around the world. USi also provides a number of services to the global trade union community: - USi delivers an online campaigning & social media course expertise on location and virtually. - Creation of an “Organising Network <http://usilive.org/wp-content/plugins/civicrm/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=461&…>"to privately and securely share information, research and campaign documents. - In-built web conference facility where we assist with the running of union events online including live streaming and other technical expertise. - Recording, editing and publishing of events for circulation to a global audience. - In partnership with global unions we are pioneering audio multi-lingual conferencing. Fwd: [Networkedlabour] Holidays for the Unemployed n Austria: The protest continues

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Martin Mair <mm(a)mediaweb.at> Date: Thu, Sep 11, 2014 at 1:48 AM Subject: [Networkedlabour] Holidays for the Unemployed n Austria: The protest continues To: networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org Maybe a little bit off topic, but i dont share many international mailinglists at the moment ... Please support and share! We are also looking for contacts to groups of unemployed in other countries to set up an international network. We are building up an international newsletter/press release list. Who is interested to get it, please send an email to international(a)aktive-arbeitslose.at We are also looking for interantional newsletter / internet plattforms to spread our infos (we are just at labourstart) Unemployed of the world unite! Martin Mair Chairman "Active Unemployed Austria" Holidays for the Unemployed: The protest continues „Aktive Arbeitslose Österreich“ (Austrian Active Unemployed) are starting an international online petition Download picture in high resolution <http://www.aktive-arbeitslose.at/bilder/news/Urlaub_fuer_Arbeitslose.jpg> (Vienna 2014-08-27) A Flash Mob on the 8th of August in the city at „Wiener Graben“ was a great success. About 20 unemployed people were sunbathing at the Graben, in front of the Erste Bank and socialised with guest from all over the world. This was a protest, that in Austria unemployed cant leave their without loosing benefits and social insurance. 50 picture postcards to the social services minister, where international guest demanded the right to holidays for the unemployed. More of those picture post cards can be either ordered at „Active Unemployed Austria“ or can be downloaded as a copy. The organisation „Active Unemployed Austria“ has started now an online petition. Their first one both in German and English for attracting international supporters. So it should be drawn international attention, that compared with those of other countries the Austrian unemployed insurance is a rigid one. Even in Germany for unemployed people, which are recipients of the Social benefit called Hartz IV, it is possible to go on holiday abroad up to 3 weeks, but as agreed upon to the Job Centre. With this online petition "Active Unemployed Austria" wants to foster the international intercommunication of unemployed people abroad. Fort the next year the 8th of August should be proclaimed as an international action day for the right of recreational holiday and family holiday. Because the unemployment is not caused by the unemployed itself but by the globalized capitalism. Therefore this problem must be combatted worldwide. Further Queries: Mag. Ing. Unemployment and the search for a new work, further often useless coercive measures of the work agency and the daily fight against against bureaucracy are very exhausting. For the partner or the whole family this situation is very demanding. Both financially and psychically. Unlike many other industrialised countries, in Austria unemployed people lose unemployment benefit and health insurance if they go abroad. Even family members living abroad cannot be visited. First of all the families and the children of the unemployed are suffering of this situation. Even though the unemployed paid their unemployment insurance over many years. They even are not responsible, that there are not enough jobs. But the government is restricting the human rights to family life and free movement. Aggravating this situation there is a lack of money, why, for example a German left wing party called “Die Linke” demand a holiday pay for the poor. Leave arrangements in other countries (first research findings) - Germany: 21 day holiday for the recipients of Hartz-IV http://www.gegen-hartz.de/nachrichtenueberhartziv/hartz-iv-ihr-anspruch-auf… - Ireland: two weeks of holiday, pensioners and invalidity pensioners can go abroad entirely http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/irish_social_welfare_sy… - Switzerland: 5 days of paid holidays after 60 days of unemployment under control http://www.vol.be.ch/vol/de/index/arbeit/arbeitslosigkeit/vorgehen_arbeitsl… If You have information about other countries, please send it to kontakt(a)aktive-arbeitslsoe.at Related Actions to the topic „Holidays for Unemployed“: - Does everyone have a right to a summer holiday? Lauren McCauley: Research Shows Frightening Correlation Between Fracking and Rates of IllnessZ Communications Daily Commentary People who live in close proximity to natural gas drilling sites are significantly more likely to report skin and respiratory problems than those who live further away, according to the largest survey to-date of the reported health effects of people exposed to fracking. The study, “*Proximity to Natural Gas Wells and Reported Health Status <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>*,”(pdf) published Wednesday in the journal *Environmental Health Perspectives* surveyed households with ground-fed water wells located in the Marcellus shale region in southwestern Pennsylvania. Researchers found that 39 percent of households located less than one kilometer from an active natural gas well reported upper respiratory problems, compared with 18 percent located more than 2 kilometers away. Further, 13 percent of respondents who live within a kilometer of a well said they had rashes and other skin irritations, compared with just 3 percent who live more than 2 kilometers away. Of the 624 active natural gas wells located in Pennsylvania’s Washington County, 95 percent were fracked — or injected with millions of gallons of water, sand, and a largely-unknown toxic mix of chemicals in order to extract gas from the shale deposits. Despite assurances by the drilling industry and numerous government officials that fracking chemicals do not pose a risk to nearby populations, scientists and environmentalists have repeatedly voiced concern over the high volume of chemicals used in the process and the potential for both groundwater and airborne contamination. Further, the drilling industry has long-fought efforts to reveal the particular chemicals used in fracking, claiming that the combination of toxins fall under “proprietary information.” The Yale-based research team notes that they did not collect data on whether individuals were receiving financial compensation for gas well drilling on their property, which they acknowledge “could have affected their willingness to report symptoms.” Based on the findings of the survey, the researchers conclude that “airborne irritant exposures” related to natural gas extraction activities, including the flaring of gas wells and exhaust from diesel equipment, “could be playing a role” in the increased reporting of respiratory symptoms among people living in close proximity to the wells. Possible explanations for the increase in reported skin irritations also include exposure to air pollutants, as well as possible well water contamination due to “breaks in the gas well casing or other underground communication between ground water supplies and fracking activities.” Because of the relative newness of the wells (5-6 years), the researchers were unable to test for a correlation between drilling activities and more long-term health impacts, such as cancer. However, the team says that their findings underscores the need for further research on the possible health impacts of fracking activities, including longitudinal studies on chronically exposed populations. For the most part, the emphasis has been on the steady weakening of trade unions and on excavating why union officials have been unwilling to attempt new forms of resistance. In such a context, discussions of workers control of the means of production—how it might look, what about it has succeeded and failed in the past, its relationship to revolutionary change—may seem a stretch. But maybe not. For perhaps what the U.S. working class needs as much as anything is to explore alternatives not only to neoliberalism but to traditional unionism, even that of the social movement type. *Ours to Master and to Own: Workers Control from the Commune to the Present* edited by Immanuel Ness and Dario Azzellini goes a long way in assisting us in that exploration. Ness and Azzellini are well-positioned to put together such an important work; both have long radical histories as writers, teachers and activists. The result of their efforts is a rich collection of stories of workers seizing control of production in different epochs under a vast array of circumstances in numerous countries. Councils, in a nutshell, are self- management organizations established by workers to administer production, usually in periods of great tumult. They may take shape in a single plant, in an entire industry or, in a revolutionary situation, in many plants and industries simultaneously. Through them, workers oversee all aspects of production including those which, under capitalism, are done by owners and bosses. The forms differ greatly but the common thread is that those who do the work should decide how it’s done. There are two important themes that emerge as one reads through the cases collected by Ness and Azzellini. One is that many workers across time and around the world have understood better than any revolutionary theoretician that the working class controlling its own work is the way it should be. Second is that councils, apart from any trade union or vanguard party, develop spontaneously and organically as the system of private ownership slips into crisis. As detailed in the book, this development occurs so frequently in such instances as to be almost a natural phenomenon. *Ours to Master and to Own* begins with four overview essays and follows with groups of analytical chapters in four categories. Significantly, stories of the global South are well-represented. Though far less industrialized than the North (and perhaps precisely for that reason), countries like Argentina and Venezuela are home to some of the most important contemporary experiments in workers control. With upheaval rocking much of the Middle East and Latin America, these case histories, together with those where councils were an integral part of anti-colonial insurgencies in Indonesia and Algeria, take on an additional timeliness. *Ours to Master and to Own* also includes a number of familiar cases. Perhaps the three best known occurred in revolutionary (or at least what were perceived by some of the participants as revolutionary) situations: the soviets in Russia leading up to and immediately after 1917; the councils in Germany during World War I up to the unsuccessful uprising of 1919; and the anarchist and anarcho-syndicalist movements in Spain in the 1930s and earlier. Each of these chapters is highly instructive, with nuanced analyses of the wide array of challenges the different groups faced. For the most part, each of these council movements failed simply because the forces aligned against them were too strong. However, there are valuable lessons within each that the contributing authors do an excellent job of mining. Equally important are more recent cases such as Argentina during the economic crisis of 2001, compellingly summarized by Marina Kabat. Initially a response to neo-liberalism, the factory takeovers that helped topple President Fernando de la Rua took on a life of their own. As the takeovers evolved, workers grappled with how best to affect a degree of control within a capitalist society. No easy feat that, and many efforts failed or were coopted. As with the uprisings in the early 20th century, however, there is much in the experience of value. As Kabat writes of the takeovers, “an objective study of their characteristics and shortcomings will help remove obstacles and develop their complete potential for the future,” especially since “[t]he reprise of the economic crisis has opened new horizons for the taken factories.” Other chapters of note are two from Eastern Europe—one on Yugoslavia by Goran Music and one on Poland by Zbiginew Marcin Kowalewski. Both document ongoing struggles for autonomy in societies purported to be workers’ states. The class conflict that surfaced quite dramatically in Poland in 1980 with the formation of Solidarity, for example, was the culmination of decades’ worth of work, rather than a brand new phenomenon. In Yugoslavia, Music relates the continuous contention between workers and the state over the form of self-management that lasted until the collapse of 1989. Then there’s a fascinating case in India authored by Arup Kumar Sen where workers in a variety of work- places went head to head with a Communist state government within a capitalist society. Events unfolded much as those in other cases, and workers there faced many of the same obstacles. It would seem from so many examples that vanguardists are right in one thing and that is the revolutionary potential of the working class. That they often fear it and have frequently been—from Lenin and Trotsky forward—as hostile to it as any capitalist is one of the most important lessons of this volume. Trade unions, including ones of the left, have also frequently opposed working class autonomy in the form of councils, especially at times of great upheaval. The period when fascism in Portugal was overthrown in 1974-75 is a prime example. As related by Peter Robinson, the alliance the Socialist unions forged with liberal military officials checked the possibility that the Revolutionary Councils of Workers, Soldiers and Sailors might expand their influence right at a point when something besides corporate liberalism was a possibility. Again, as we examine what was, we are left to wonder what might have been. Still, the tone of *Ours To Master and To Own* is decidedly positive. In chapter after chapter, we can practically see workers contending with the most fundamental of revolutionary questions: what should the kind of society we want look like? How do we best get there? Again and again, as events unfold, great emphasis is placed on process. In fact, in case after case, a successful outcome, however else that is measured, is inseparable from process. Workers went forward as often as not without deeply elaborated theories, but with a highly attuned sense that each was responsible to one another as well as to the future. There is also much strategic discussion that is of immense value. In a revolutionary situation, for example, do councils pre-figure a working class state? Or does their consolidation mark the beginning of the end of the state? If the former, what should the relationship of the councils be to the state? Although some of the contributors put forward more decisive answers than others, the overall tone of the book is that these are still open questions to be answered with greater experience. Inclusion of at least a few chapters authored by workers might have added another dimension to the book. Workers are quoted throughout and their insights are meaningful parts of a number of the analyses. Still, hearing summaries and perhaps some tentative conclusions from on-the-ground participants could have provided a larger understanding of the subject at hand. The specific experiences of women in worker councils are also largely invisible in these accounts, perhaps because industrial work has been the domain of men and the councils largely the domain of the industrial work- force. Still, it would have been beneficial to hear about the role of women in at least a few of the case studies. Though it is difficult to imagine any popular movement, working class-centered or otherwise, in which women would not play a prominent role, much of the work women do remains below the surface. It is for this reason that councils of the present and the future, at least those that are the most inclusive, may be influenced by cooperative economics with its emphasis on the citizenry at all levels—worker, domestic laborer, and consumer. At the same time, analysis that assumes the special role of women may bring into being more inclusive council formations. The value of *Ours to Master and to Own* is that its contributors collectively wrestle with these kinds of big questions. Who should decide and which factors must be weighed in the deciding—are not questions with easy answers, after all. Ness, Azzellini, and all of the contributors have made a valuable contribution to our understanding of how to go forward. All the better that a second volume is in the works. *Andy Piascik is a long-time activist and award-winning author who writes for Z Magazine, Counterpunch, The Indypendent and many other publications and websites. Fwd: ZNet Commentary: Paul Street: Deadly Drums of War and Oil
by Michel Bauwens 12 Sep '14

12 Sep '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: ZCommunications <no-reply(a)zcomm.org> Date: Thu, Sep 11, 2014 at 8:37 PM Subject: ZNet Commentary: Paul Street: Deadly Drums of War and Oil To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>. Paul Street: Deadly Drums of War and OilZ Communications Daily Commentary The nation and world are in dire straits as US president Barack Obama prepares to address “the homeland” (a revealingly imperial term) tonight (I am writing on the morning of Wednesday, September 10, 2014). As Obama acknowledged on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos,” 95% of the nation’s income gains went to the nation’s top 1% <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> between 2009 and 2012. The nation’s *median household income has dropped* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> by more than $4000 since 2000. Between 1983 and 2010, the Economic Policy Institut <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>e has calculated, 74% of the gains in wealth in the U.S. went to the richest 5%, while the bottom 60% suffered a decline. All of this and more feeds the United States’ status as by far and away the industrialized world’s most unequal and poverty-ridden nation – a curious designation for the self-described Land of Opportunity (LOO), home to what Obama called in 2006 <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> “a prosperity that’s unmatched in human history” (a “prosperity” the future president attributed to the United States’ embrace of “private property” and “the logic of the marketplace”). As than *16 million children – 22% of all US children* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> *–* languish below the federal government’s inadequate poverty level, the US top 1% owns more wealth than the bottom 90% <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> (and a probably comparable share of the nation’s “democratically elected” officials). *Six Walmart heirs* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> have more wealth between them than the bottom 40%. One in seven US citizens *rely on food banks* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> (half of those people are employed, incidentally) while a small US minority enjoys radical opulence in heavily guarded mansions and luxurious apartments and suites at home and abroad. Former New York State Tax Commissioner *James Wezler* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> worries, with reason, that the US is becoming “a plutocratic dystopia characterized by wealth inequality approaching that of *ancien régime* France.” These terrible facts reflect more than three decades of *deliberately engineered upward wealth and income distribution:* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> a ruthless state-capitalist concentration of riches and power that has brought us to a New Gilded Age of *abject oligarchy* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> and (more on this below) the *brink of environmental catastrophe* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> . Economic inequality, the first of what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., called “the triple evils that are interrelated <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>,” is alive and well. It has, in fact, thrived over the four-plus decades since King’s assassination (or execution). It doesn’t help that the US accounts for nearly half the world’s military spending <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>. It uses vast taxpayer largesse to pay for giant cost-plus “defense” contracts with high-tech US corporations and maintain more than 1000 military installations spread across more than 100 “sovereign” nations. The US deploys Special Forces in 134 countries <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>, one of many Pentagon expenditures that help keep the United States’ much bemoaned (by the right) “welfare state” among the weakest in the industrialized world. One does not have to wonder long what Dr. King – a bust of whom sits in Orwellian irony behind Kill List Obama in the Oval Office <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> – would think. Exactly one year before his assassination (or execution) in Memphis, Tennessee King warned <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> that “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.” As the Ferguson. Missouri police shooting and popular rebellion ought to remind us, the nation’s savage inequalities are still heavily racialized. Racist structures and practices remain insidiously prevalent across the far-from “color blind” and “post-racial” United States. Democratic Party shill and civil rights charlatan Al Sharpton told mourners in Ferguson <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> that legitimate Black protest should be about “*how *we gonna police in the United States.” The more fundamental question is *what* government authorities (“we”?) police in the United States. And what they police and enforce is, among other things, persistent harsh racial segregation <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> and intimately related harsh *racial inequality* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>*. *The *median wealth of white US households is 22 times higher than the median wealth of black US households* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> *.* This stark disparity both reflects and feeds a four-decades-long *campaign of racially disparate hyper-incarceration and criminal marking* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> *.* More than *40 percent* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> of the nation’s *2.4 million prisoners* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> are Black. One in three black adult males carries the crippling lifelong stigma (what law professor Michelle Alexander has famously termed “the New Jim Crow”) of a felony record. Racism was the second of Dr. King’s “triple evils that are interrelated.” It lives on, with special cover from the existence of some “Black faces in high places” (including the oval office) in the Age of Oprah and Obama. Meanwhile there’s the question of whether there’ll be anything left for police or anyone else to “serve and protect” in the not-so-distant future. As Noam Chomsky notes <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> in a recent brilliant if depressing and possibly paralyzing reflection: “The likely end of the era of civilization is foreshadowed in a new draft report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the generally conservative monitor of what is happening to the physical world….The report concludes that increasing greenhouse gas emissions risk ‘severe, pervasive and irreversible impacts for people and ecosystems’ over the coming decades. The world is nearing the temperature when loss of the vast ice sheet over Greenland will be unstoppable. Along with melting Antarctic ice, that could raise sea levels to inundate major cities as well as coastal plains… The IPCC report reaffirms that the ‘vast majority’ of known fuel reserves must be left in the ground to avert intolerable risks to future generations. Meanwhile the major energy corporations make no secret of their goal of exploiting these reserves and discovering new ones…A day before its summary of the IPCC conclusions, *The New York Times* reported that huge Midwestern grain stocks are rotting so that the products of the North Dakota oil boom can be shipped by rail to Asia and Europe.” Chomsky could have deepened his dark case by referencing leading left oil and empire analyst Karl Klare’s observation <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> that “ U.S. oil consumption is on an upward trajectory, climbing by <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> 400,000 barrels per day in 2013 alone — and, if current trends persist, it should rise again <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> both this year and next.” As Klare elaborates: “….oil is back. Big time….Despite what you may think, Americans, on average, are driving more miles <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> every day, not fewer, filling ever more fuel tanks with ever more gasoline, and evidently feeling ever less bad about it. The stigma of buying new gas-guzzling SUVs, for instance, seems to have vanished; according to <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> CNN Money, nearly one out of three vehicles sold today is an SUV. As a result of all this, America’s demand for oil grew <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> more than China’s in 2013, the first time that’s happened since 1999.” “Accompanying all this is a little noticed but crucial shift in White House rhetoric. While President Obama once spoke of the necessity of eliminating our reliance on petroleum as a major source of energy, he now brags about rising U.S. oil output and touts his efforts to further boost production.” The once widespread expectation that the US would be moving quickly on the path to a post-petroleum economy (one of the early promises of the Obama candidacy of 2007-2008) have been swept for now into history’s proverbial dustbin – with consequences that are terrible to contemplate. If Dr. King were alive today (he’d be 85), he would certainly add Ecocide – itself intimately related to economic inequality (capitalism, essentially) – to his list of the “evils that are interrelated.” Smart people like Rachel Carson and Barry Commoner were warning about the danger in his lifetime. Half a century later the risk is shockingly imminent; it has overtaken nuclear war as the leading threat to human survival. Surely, then, “our” left (according to the FOX News and talk radio empire and cohort) and “progressive” (some liberals still insist on believing against all evidence both before <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> and since Obama’s first White House election) president is going to try to rescue his frankly failed presidency <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> by getting real about how We the People can meaningfully confront and overcome poverty, mass joblessness, savage economic inequality, ferocious racial disparity, and climate change/ecocide with bold and progressive policy and politics. Surely he is going to honor the memory of Dr. King by calling for: a significant downward distribution of wealth and income; measures to roll back abject plutocracy; the re-building and expansion of the social safety net; the empowerment of worker organizing; a serious confrontation with persistent US racism (deeply and institutionally understood); de-incarceration; the de-militarization of local police, the massive transference of resources from the spiritually fatal war and empire machine to a giant Green Jobs program – a Green New Deal that will put millions to millions to remunerative and socially useful and ecologically (and existentially) essential work: the building of a post-fossil fuel social energy infrastructure relying on wind, water, and solar…an epic, Life-saving reconversion of the US political economy. Get real. Nope. Obama is addressing the nation tonight to make the case for the US to intensify its commitment to the third of Dr. King’s “triple evils” – militarism – in the Middle East. He will inveigh against the reprehensible barbarism – including videotaped beheadings of US journalists – of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). He will proclaim “America’s” well-intentioned devotion to civilized values: human rights, freedom, and democracy – all those good “American” things that dastardly pre-modern Islamists irrationally hate. He will say nothing about the United States’ brazenly petro-imperial and, well, barbarian, mass-murderous role in the Middle East and the Muslim world. (Beginnings on this topic can start by Googling up “Fallujah 2004,” “Abu Ghraib and torture,” “Bagram Air Force and enhanced interrogation,” “Highway of Death,” “Madeline Albright and 500,000 Iraqi children,” “Nisour Square and Wikileaks,” “Bola Boluk 2009,” “Jeremy Scahill and Dirty Wars” and “Nir Rosen and Death of Iraq.”) He’ll make no reference to the United States’ long oil-driven history of backing brutally repressive and despotic regimes in the region. He won’t mention the beheadings that are regularly carried out by authorities in Saudi Arabia, a key US ally that is home to the most reactionary government on Earth. He won’t mention longstanding US support for Israel’s recurrent murder of Palestinians in Gaza and for Israel’s regime of savage racist apartheid and oppression (which kills and maims on a regular basis between period episodes of IDF “lawn mowing”). He won’t talk about how US interventions, occupations, alliances, murders and neoliberal policies in the region have long pushed Arabs and Muslims into fundamentalism and violence. He won’t acknowledge how US military escalation always fuels jihadist recruitment and rage. He won’t admit the United States’ direct role in building up ISIS in Syria, part of Washington’s campaigns against the Assad regime and Shia Iran. He won’t mention the older role of the US and its allies Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in the building up of al Qaeda, of which ISIS is an offshoot. He won’t mention the price that millions of disproportionately Black poor US children pay for the giant systemic diversion of US taxpayer dollars from social uplift at home to US Empire abroad. He won’t mention the social, public, democratic, and environmental needs that go vastly unmet as the US transfers billions to corporate war masters. He won’t note that the US Empire is dedicated to maintaining US control over a global oil spigot whose output places humanity at ever more imminent risk of self-liquidation. He won’t admit that he is banging the drums of war so that the Washington can try to protect its control over the filling of the deadly drums of oil. There’s a word for all this: Evil <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>. And there’s only one “solution” – popular organization for revolutionary change, for what Dr. King called near the end of his life “the real issue to be faced” beyond “superficial” matters (like the skin color or gender of a Wall Street-backed political candidate): “the radical reconstruction of society itself.” Awareness that this radical project – quite do-able, for what it’s worth – is now urgently required to preserve chances for a decent future, for survival, might light a fire in the hearts and minds of those who are serious about saving the US, the world, and (dare I say) themselves from spiritual as well as material death. *Paul Street’s latest book is **They Rule: The 1% v. New book announcement
by Vasilis Kostakis 09 Sep '14

09 Sep '14

Dear all, This is to announce the publication of the book "Network Society & Future Scenarios for a Collaborative Economy" authored by Michel and myself. The book can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/ldl3e7r (free "draft" version) or bought here: http://tinyurl.com/ptvhg9b . As happens with the majority of the scholarly books it is overpriced. Therefore, if anyone wants to buy it, he/she might contact me for a lower price (using my author discount -40%). Hopefully the pdf, which we do not have, will somehow leak :-) Best, Vasilis -- Dr. Vasilis Kostakis Research Fellow Ragnar Nurkse School of Innovation and Governance Research Director P2P Lab: http://p2plab.org
