http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/announcement/view/22 You can win one of 20 copies of Christian Fuchs’ new book “OccupyMedia! The Occupy Movement and Social Media in Crisis Capitalism” http://fuchs.uti.at/books/occupymedia-the-occupy-movement-and-social-media-… by participating in tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique’s (http://www.triple-c.at) commonist social media contest: Send tripleC a self-made picture (jpg format) as well as a 500 word short text that symbolises and deals with the following two questions: What’s wrong with capitalism and capitalist social media such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, Weibo, etc. ? How would a commonist social media world look like? Send your picture (just one), text (500 words, not more), and postal address until Saturday Sep 27 to the tripleC office: office(a)triple-c.at The books will be given to the senders of the first 20 submissions (submissions affirmative of capitalism and opposed to commonism are excluded from winning because they contradict question #1). Only one submission per person is possible. By participating you agree that your picture and text will be published together with other submissions in a blog post on http://fuchs.uti.at/blog (if you don’t want to have your name mentioned, then say so in your submission) Zero Books will publish the book at the end of October 2014, so the winners will be among the first getting to read the book. About the book: The Occupy movement has emerged in a historical crisis of global capitalism. It struggles for the reappropriation of the commodified commons. Communications are part of the commons of society. Yet contemporary social media are ridden by an antagonism between private corporate control (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and self-managed, commons-based activist media. In this work, Christian Fuchs analyses the contradictory dialectic of social media in the Occupy movement. Drawing on a political economy framework and interpretation of the results of the OccupyMedia! Survey, in which more than 400 Occupy activists reported on their social media use, OccupyMedia! The Occupy Movement and Social Media in Crisis Capitalism shows how activists confront the contradictions of capitalism and communication in the age of crisis and social media. The book discusses the contradiction between commercial and alternative social media and argues that the existence of a surveillance-industrial complex expressed in the PRISM system shows the urgent necessity to create social media beyond Facebook and Google. Photograph: Bloomberg/Getty Images Ten years ago, when I first started reporting on China’s migrant labour force, they were not hard to spot. Peasant hairstyles, cheap clothes, corralled into concrete dormitories and marched, military style, into and out of the factory. But labour shortages, rising skill levels and better wages have changed the sociology of the Chinese factory. Now it’s spiky hair and, in their leisure time, fast fashion. Though many still live in dorms, taking most of their meals in the factory canteen, since the mid-2000s, many of the industrial districts have had estates of family apartments. This year, there has been a rash of strikes in the Chinese export industry – headlined by the strike of 30,000 shoe workers at Yue Yuen Industrial Holdings, in Dongguan, southern China. Two factors make conditions ripe. There is a labour shortage, with better jobs available in the service sector. At the same time, a slowing economy is forcing managers to try to claw back certain perks and benefits; at Yue Yuen, it was the underpayment of contributions to a retirement fund that sparked the trouble. But now there’s a third factor at work: the internet, which has exploded into Chinese life. Workers at Yue Yuen used two popular messaging apps to get each other out on strike. He Yuan-Chiang, a lawyer who represents workers in Shenzhen, talked me through the process: “They used QQ – an instant messaging service – to create numerous overlapping groups. These were quite diverse, and often contradicted each other, but everybody could join. But the real organising was done on Weixin.” Weixin is a mobile messaging service similar to WhatsApp in the west. It is zonal – so you can search for people you know nearby. But its attraction for the strikers was that theycould create invite-only groups there. “That’s where the core organisers were,” says He. On top of that, the strikers used Weibo – a service similar to Twitter – to disseminate news about the strike. Though the strike was settled, its significance has not been lost on China’s government. In an industrial landscape that often looks more like the 19th than the 21st century, the internet is rapidly changing workplace dynamics. In the late 2000s, internet penetration leapt from 10% to 30% in four years. Internet cafes with hundreds of screens opened up in the workers’ districts. Sociologists who interviewed the young migrant workers back then found them using the web for two things: to build connections with other workers from their home towns, and to let off steam by playing games. It’s hard to imagine, if you’ve not been inside the regimented and stressful atmosphere of a Chinese factory, what an internet cafe first felt like to someone who has only ever slept on a farm or in a factory dorm. “Our foreman is a tough guy. But when I meet him in the internet cafe I am not afraid of him,” one female worker told researchers in 2012. “He has no right to control me here. He is an internet user. So am I.” But that now feels like prehistory. We’ve got the mobile internet – which has been bigger than the desktop internet in China for two years and involves more than 600 million people. On top of that there is social media. With a combination of Weibo, QQ and Weixin you’ve got the atmosphere of the internet cafe in your pocket. The group messaging service allows you a better chance of hiding your already heavily coded and euphemistic strike calls behind a surge of information too big even for the thousands of internet police to find. Now, on top of technology and a changed economic situation, there is the example of Occupy Central. This peaceful mass movement for democracy in Chinese-administered Hong Kong has brought hundreds of thousands to the streets, mobilised different sections of society, and used the same tools – internet, social media and occupied space – as the horizontal movements in Europe and the US. “China is different”, the perennial excuse of Sinologists for the population’s failure to rebel against Communist party rule, looks hollow since Occupy Central began. It is not clear how much people inside mainland China know about Occupy Central. But at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong last year, students organised a mild, mainly cultural response to it – printing T-shirts with the slogan “Not only birds are free” and launching discussions around related issues. The students involved included some who had previously been factory workers – and who were now involved in advocacy work for factory workers in mainland China. At the very least, we can assume the worlds of Occupy Central and the world of the Guangdong province factory workers are not hermetically separated. In the 1990s, when the Chinese government was still dealing with the remnants of an old, industrial, relatively privileged working class, concentrated in heavy industries, worker unrest was treated as tantamount to treason. The initial years of rapid expansion brought chaos and brutality. But before long, official Chinese unions began to organise the migrant workforce, and workers were given basic legal rights. This “normalisation” of labour relations is not threatened by the outbreak of strikes this year. But information technology injects a new dynamic. In the west, the phenomenon of the networked individual began in San Francisco and spread via the middle classes to the tech-savvy youth. Manual workers, and trade unions, were relatively late to the game. In China, you have a factory workforce with harsh, hierarchical conditions and very little free time, accessing their devices in toilet breaks or on the train home. The contrast between hierarchy at work and the relative freedom of the internet is stark. China is now experiencing 21st-century conflicts over what look like 19th-century issues: poverty, sweated labour, corrupt management. There is one bulletin board, for example, that specialises only in anonymously submitted photographs of Communist bureaucrats wearing luxury watches. If this was only about factory workers versus corrupt bosses, the implications would be interesting but not dramatic. But if you accept that the main faultline in the world is between networks and hierarchies, then China is sitting right on top of it. And China’s workers – who look like digital rebels, but analogue slaves – are right at the heart of the phenomenon. *Paul Mason is **economics editor at Channel 4 News* <http://blogs.channel4.com/paul-mason-blog/>*. Fwd: ZNet Commentary: Nadia Prupis: FBI Launches Facial Recognition Program

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: ZCommunications <no-reply(a)zcomm.org> Date: Thu, Sep 18, 2014 at 7:49 PM Subject: ZNet Commentary: Nadia Prupis: FBI Launches Facial Recognition Program To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>. Nadia Prupis: FBI Launches Facial Recognition ProgramZ Communications Daily Commentary The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced on Monday that its facial recognition software, Next Generation Identification (NGI), is “fully operational,” cementing the launch of a program that civil rights groups warn could risk turning innocent civilians into criminal suspects. “The IPS facial recognition service will provide the nation’s law enforcement community with an investigative tool that provides an image-searching capability of photographs associated with criminal identities,” the bureau said in a press release <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>. “This effort is a significant step forward for the criminal justice community in utilizing biometrics as an investigative enabler.” NGI was initially developed to expand the FBI’s biometric identification capabilities, but will eventually replace the bureau’s current fingerprinting system. The program’s database holds more than 100 million individual records that link fingerprints, iris scans and facial-recognition data with personal information, legal status, home addresses, and other private details, and will obtain 52 million facial recognition images by 2015. One individual may be linked to multiple images, including those that come from employment records, DMV photos, and background check databases. Civil rights and privacy watchdogs have criticized the program for its invasive—and inaccurate—tactics. The system, a billion-dollar investment that has been in development with Lockheed Martin for three years, was found to identify the wrong individual 20 percent of the time, a statistic which increases over time and as the database expands, the Electronic Frontier Foundation discovered <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>. Another report obtained by the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) found that the system had an 85 percent success rate <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> when searches were made among clear, front-facing images with no obstructions. By compiling mugshots and DMV photos in the same database, the bureau risks identifying citizens with no records as potential criminal suspects, EFF said, adding, “This is not how our system of justice was designed and should not be a system that Americans tacitly consent to move towards.” Sen. Al Franken (D-Minnesota), former chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law, said at a July 2012 congressional hearing on the facial recognition program that it “could be abused to not only identify protesters at political events and rallies, but to target them for selective jailing and prosecution.” “Data accumulation and sharing can be good for solving crimes across jurisdictions or borders, but can also perpetuate racial and ethnic profiling, social stigma, and inaccuracies throughout all systems and can allow for government tracking and surveillance on a level not before possible,” EFF said in a letter <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> (pdf) to Attorney General Eric Holder. The FBI defended itself by stating that NGI, which is used by law enforcement agencies throughout the country, was not meant to give accurate information, but rather to return a list of possible “candidates.” “The candidate list is an investigative lead not an identification,” the bureau told EFF, claiming that because the system does not single anyone out, “there is no false positive rate.” Jeramie Scott, National Security Counsel at EPIC, told *Common Dreams *that the FBI was “again moving forward with invasive surveillance technology without first fully addressing the privacy risks.” “Facial recognition, which enables the identification of individuals without consent, has far-reaching implications for personal privacy and presents a real risk of mass surveillance,” Scott said. “The E-Government Act of 2002 requires privacy assessments for technology that collects personal information, and over two years ago the FBI committed to a privacy assessment of its use of facial recognition technology. The FBI should suspend the use of facial recognition until the agency follows through with its commitment to assess and mitigate the privacy risks associated with facial recognition.” Privacy watchdogs also expressed concern over the individual features of the NGI program, such as Rap Back service, which EPIC said “equates to an ongoing, continual background check.” “It is not only used to monitor whether people under correctional supervision are arrested again, but to constantly monitor civilians in various trusted positions (e.g. teachers or banker tellers),” EPIC wrote in a blog post <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>. “Civilians under Rap Back monitoring must submit their fingerprints and potentially photos too as NGI now allow photo submissions for civilian entries.” There are currently no federal laws limiting the use of facial-recognition software.
