Fwd: <nettime> World at War? Counter-revolution and Unbalanced Multipolarism

What is our life project? "* Forwarded conversation Subject: <nettime> World at War? Counter-revolution and Unbalanced Multipolarism ------------------------ From: *Alex Foti* <alex.foti(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Aug 26, 2014 at 5:25 PM To: nettime-l(a)kein.org dear 'timers, we are living in a William Gibson novel and it ain't pretty: hypermediatization, random cruelty, aberrant irrationality, political and ecological disintegration seem to rule the world. yet there is a simple hobbesian logic to this all - i propose a simple model to interpret the horrific events of 2014 based on two hypotheses - one that the counter-revolution is trying to gain the upper hand in the Middle East and elsewhere after the revolutionary wave of 2011 (let's call it the thermidorian hypothesis, incarnated by say Sisi and Netanyahu) and two that we have entered a geopolitical era based on a multipolar system which is unbalanced, i.e. where regional powers vie for influence and dominance in the various areas of the world and sectors of the global economy, augmenting the risk of war. Since the G20 was first convened in April 2009 to address the macroeconomic imbalances created by the financial crisis, it's clear that the West is no longer in control of the world, and emergent powers and sovereign funds increasingly call the shots. The reckless bid to global hegemony launched by bushism in Iraq and Afghanistan has failed miserably and marked an end to the post-cold-war world order of unipolar (and often unilateral) American power, the "hyperpuissance" as the French called it, of the 90s and 00s. The Arab Spring and its aftermath has further exposed the political and military weakness of the US and its EU allies. The intervention of the west was crucial only in Libya, and it was initiated by the French and only reluctantly Obama joined. Unfortunately, the overthrow and execution of Qaddafi (justified in my eyes) has not led to some rough kind of democracy but to civil war and a failed state in the former Italian colony. Only in Tunisia, the homeland of the revolution, there is no attempt to return to the status quo ante, as an uneasy dynamic has set in opposing the muslim majority in government and the secular urban young minorities who did the revolution, and especially women fighting for their rights against clerical interference. It was the same of dynamic (let's call it the muslim brothers vs black bloc hooligans for theatric effect) that was at work during Morsi's short democratic tenure, interrupted by the military coup at behest of Saudi Arabia, the true evil power of the region, possibly even more than Assad's murderous regime, in the light of the fact that it has spawned ISIS, the nightmare finally come true: a revolutionary army of ideological and sectarian fanatics loaded with weapons and cash, bent on establishing the Sunni Caliphate across Syria, Iraq, Kurdistan, and the whole Ummah. This is not the Al Qaeda beheaded by Obama, it's an open call to jihadists across the world to conquer muslim land unjustly apportioned by European powers after Versailles and slaughter the infidels, starting with Kurdish and especially Shia people, a confession for centuries dominated by Sunni despotism that is turning the tables of history favoring the rise of Iran and the power it built after the 1979 revolution, decidedly the year that the 21st century started (the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and Carter roasted himself to peanuts). Of course it is in Syria-Iraq, Gaza and Ukraine that the geopolitical fault-lines of multipolarism are exposing major volcanic activity, and the lava is engulfing thousands and thousands of innocent people killed remorselessly for dreams of great power and millennial territorial expansion. Let's see Syria first. Almost 200,000 people have died since Assad, like Qaddafi before him, started bombing his own people. Homs is an open-air cemetery, Aleppo, once the capital of the Umayyad empire (the mosque that testified their long-gone power was destroyed last year - an archeological crime against humanity just like Jonas' tomb destroyed by ISIS a few weeks ago, or the Banyan Buhddas by the talebans fifteen years ago) has been reduced to a mound of rubble. Since the US and the UK dithered over direct intervention and ultimately appeased Putin over Syria, ISIS has defeated all other (mostly Qatari-funded) islamist fighting organizations and become the most fearful enemy of Shias in the region and of the west in the world. Northern Iraq and Western Syria are theirs, while Kurdistan is threatened: this is the fearsome Islamic State. The Syrian war is a nest of ideological and geopolitical contradictions. Assad's Alawite (minor shia sect) army is helped by Hezbollah (the popular Lebanese shia miliatias which are fighting as proxies of Iran) against the islamist forces funded by Saudi Arabia (ISIS) and Qatar (Islamic Front), as well as other formations and other emirates. The Free Syrian Army seems to count as much as the Iraqi army, which melted at the sight of thousands of black-flagged and black-clad jihadists on gun-toting pick-up trucks. The incredible number of victims and refugees of the Syrian war mostly belong to the civilian sunni majority of Syria. Rising Iran and the decline of the House of Saud (source of that wahabbism that has infected the Middle East and the world) are the trends that have driven the political dynamic of the region in the last three decades. They face each other in Syria and in Baghdad. But now the creation of the Islamic State (on the 4th of July!) has become too destabilizing. The violently intolerant jihadists have taken Mosul, ancient Ninive, and its oil fields. Its giant dam is being fought over by the Peshmerga, the fighters of autonomous Kurdistan, pretty much the only positive force in a dark hell of ethnic cleansing and violent misogyny. An independent Kurdish state is bound to emerge from this war if ISIS is defeated. Although Erbil has been seriously threatened, the Kurds have taken Kirkuk, which they regard as their Jerusalem, and its oil fields. A rump Iraq based on a uneasy truce between the shias of the south and the sunnis in the north brokered by the US (and its limited military intervention against ISIS) is possible, but unlikely to be stable, and would further veer the country toward Iran, which is already exerting much influence there through Al-Sistani and has now sent its own revolutionary army, the Pasdaran, to directly fight the Islamic State, which is now turning its ferocity back to Syria (it has just captured its main air force base), to the point that Assad has extended a hand to the US. I think the west should oppose such offer at all costs and instead find an agreement with Iran, which albeit theocratic and repressive, is definitely a modernist form of islam favoring popular participation and tolerating a higher degree of anti-conformism (unless it turns into a green revolution;) with respect to the Gulf petrocracies, especially for what concerns women's rights. An increasingly right-wing Israel opposes such rapprochement with all its energies, and Netanyahu has callously seized the opportunity of US attention caught by Ukraine and Iraq and start its own destabilization of the region by bombing the people of Gaza, invading the city with tanks, and pointlessly trying to eradicate Hamas from the strip. If anything I think Meshal now stands a better chance of becoming the president of a future Palestinian state (if it ever sees the light). Thousand of kids have been mercilessly butchered by the Israeli military, with appalling popular approval at home. Israel has become an ethnic democracy intolerant of the Arab element in its midst. Rabid nationalism is stronger there than in France, Denmark or Greece. It's an apartheid state, but unlike South Africa, the majority is in charge. Unless the US decides to break with the Israel lobby at home and suspends its military aid, no progress will be made there, although American Jews and Americans in general seem to disapprove of Israel's actions to an unprecedented degree. Putin's Russia, which had been on the defensive since 2011, went on the offensive after the euromaidan forces seized power in Ukraine, shifting the country from the Russian to the European (German) sphere of influence. I have already written of how he seized Crimea with blitzkrieg speed and destabilized Eastern Ukraine. From a realist point of view, a country that has already lost a piece of its territory will try to defend what it has left with all the military resources at its disposal. And it's precisely what Poroshenko is doing by hammering the Donetsk republic with all it has and inflicting horrific civilian losses but also accepting high military casualties, since the secession is militarily equipped and trained by the Kremlin: whatever you think of these guys, they have tanks, they are no partisan or guerrilla fighters. The war will end when Merkel and Putin will find an understanding over the status of Ukraine that doesn't compromise energy supplies and eurorussian business ventures, but Russia has lost the Cold War, not won it, Poland and the Baltic members of the EU object to the old eurocore. So it will be a careful game for anemic European diplomacy to navigate between Russian aggressiveness and an unstable Maghreb: as for the Middle East, it is a nasty game best left to the once protective Americans; what is sure is that Sykes-Picot is history for good. In Ukraine, American and European interests seem to diverge. For all the tension built in East Asia by signs of Chinese expansionism and Japanese militarism, with the downing of the (second) Malaysian passenger jet, it is Ukraine that is sending the shivers down the spine of the global economy. But the real threat to an already imbalanced multipolar geopolitical system (historically the most war-prone, think the Napoleonic era or Belle Epoque) is ISIS apocalyptic aggressiveness (uniting popes and ayatollahs in their hostility to it), its mix of media sophistication and barbaric determination something that seems to occur on a different historical time-scale different than the one we normally use to make sense of modernity. And this is occurring in the world's Heartland, where the historical destinies of empires have been decided since the times of Tamerlane. In the end, Realpolitik and the radical democratic aspirations unleashed by the Revolution will clash, as they have always had in the past. War is a way to normalize revolution, to discipline its wild outcomes. Historically, war has also been the tool of choice for every expansionary ideology. For ISIS to lose, Assad, Sisi, and Erdogan can't win. # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: http://mx.kein.org/mailman/listinfo/nettime-l # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: nettime(a)kein.org ---------- From: *Brian Holmes* <bhcontinentaldrift(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, Aug 31, 2014 at 3:17 PM To: nettime-l(a)mail.kein.org Alex, it's always great to read your all-embracing visions (though actually what we are living through now is more like a Bruce Sterling novel than a William Gibson one). Anyway, I would like to go a little further with the closing points: In Ukraine, American and European interests seem to diverge. For > all the tension built in East Asia by signs of Chinese expansionism > and Japanese militarism, with the downing of the (second) Malaysian > passenger jet, it is Ukraine that is sending the shivers down the > spine of the global economy. > Since 2008, and above all, since the euro-crisis came online and never went off, what's happening is - for the 90s generation anyway - THE UNTHINKABLE: the end of the predominance of the economy as such. Globalization was the globalization of money, period. Even the Revolution in Military Affairs was a sales pitch for new technology, and the Iraq invasion of 2003 was a business plan for the extractive industries. Since 2008 growth in the West has been radically stalled, the US recovery is a mirage, the German miracle is unsustainable in a devastated EU, and the chatter of web 2.0 can't hide the ravages of technological unemployment. Brad DeLong, who was a Clinton economist, now talks of the Greater Depression instead of the Great Recession. For Euro-American neoliberalism this is an anthropological change. The idea that a kid from the neighborhood can't score a million with a killer app or a new real-estate scheme is the end of an era, the fall of homo delirius. In the void, all interests diverge and entirely new forms of human motivation start vying for some space in the ideological vacuum that human nature abhors. But the real threat to an already imbalanced multipolar geopolitical > system (historically the most war-prone, think the Napoleonic > era or Belle Epoque) is ISIS apocalyptic aggressiveness (uniting > popes and ayatollahs in their hostility to it), its mix of media > sophistication and barbaric determination something that seems to > occur on a different historical time-scale different than the one we > normally use to make sense of modernity. > In the twilight of the universal equivalent (Dollardammerung) the question of a life-project becomes the huge overriding existential issue, on which the tattered left is almost totally silent after the cocaine and cynicism of the long credit-boom. Multipolar eras are all about grabbing territory, but the real-estate of the heart is just as important. Western intellectuals and political-artistic vanguards are paralyzed by our impotence in the face of both oligarchical control and climate change, while the ISIS jihadis are storming heaven. In the Former West right now I only see two beacons: Podemos in Spain and the Negro Summer of Ferguson, Missouri. But we need a sunrise, not a fire in the night. In the end, Realpolitik and the radical democratic aspirations > unleashed by the Revolution will clash, as they have always had in > the past. War is a way to normalize revolution, to discipline its > wild outcomes. Historically, war has also been the tool of choice > for every expansionary ideology. For ISIS to lose, Assad, Sisi, and > Erdogan can't win. > Yeah, we on the radical left have seen the ways that war neutralizes and normalizes revolution, no question about it. Right now Kerry is calling for a global coalition against ISIS. Reboot the global war machine, empire-style. But who would pay for it? The Saudis of course, the same way that Japan paid for the Grand Coalition of the first Gulf War, the one that opened up the era of neoliberal globalization. Let's hope it doesn't happen, because then Assad, Sisi and Erdogan do win. The spectacular religious barbarism of ISIS is a dart to the heart of the disenfranchised militants and intellectuals here in the Former West. What is our answer to multipolar chaos? What is our life project? restlessly yours, Brian -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

This restructuring of supply chains involves the interaction of a range of different public and private, local and global actors, including companies involved in ‘knowledge-based’ activities as well as those producing and shipping material goods. Both intellectual and manual labour are implicated in these processes of consolidation and acceleration and feel the squeeze: in intensification of work, the precarisation of working conditions and the fragmentation of the workforce, raising challenges for the organisation and representation of labour. This volume brings together accounts of what is happening to logistical labour along global supply chains with theoretical discussions of the problematic relationship between the ‘knowledge-based’ and real economies, and material and immaterial labour. It also presents research on other dimensions of labour precariousness, with contributions from Europe, Asia and the Americas. It's a first version (and in the meantime we've been working on semantic web tools as well), and a "dynamic" tool, that is made to change and be enriched, adapted and adopted... Two additional details: In the next two weeks (by August 11), please send me a short bio of yourself. We will compile everyone's bio into a single document and distribute it shortly before our workshop as a way to help us get to know each other more easily. Also, if you have any particularly relevant books, reports or articles that you wish to bring to the attention of others, we will set up a side table to display these materials so that participants can learn about some great literature out there! Fwd: What to Do about ISIS
by Michel Bauwens 02 Sep '14

02 Sep '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tikkun <magazine(a)tikkun.org> Date: Mon, Sep 1, 2014 at 6:25 PM Subject: What to Do about ISIS To: Michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Editor's Note: *Tikkun* seeks to present a range of views that you wouldn't hear in the mainstream media, without necessarily endorsing those perspectives. Please remember that *Tikkun*'s own position is articulated only in our editorials. In my view, the important article by David Swanson that I’m sharing below may be underestimating the venality and murderous nature of the ISIS coalition that he describes. Unlike Hamas and unlike the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, ISIS appears to have genocidal intent toward Christians and Shia Muslims (and possibly also toward Sunnis who don't share their perspective and almost certainly toward Jews). On the other hand, I know that I don't know who they really are or even what they are really doing. I've read enough lies about previous run-up to wars in the Western media to know not to believe anything I read, but only to consider that the media's account is one possible way of viewing the reality. I also know that the gruesome accounts of murders committed by ISIS are shocking to a U.S. audience in part because the far greater number of people killed by the U.S. interventions in the Middle East, South East Asia, Central and South America have never been presented in an honest way to the American people. Most of us have not heard the gruesome details or stories of the families that have lost loved ones as a result of U.S. military and CIA actions. Accounts of how ISIS members used waterboarding on their captives have been told in a way that dramatizes the inhumanity of a tactic that was used on many, many of those held by the United States in Guantanamo and in more secret detention and torture facilities run by or contacted by the United States around the world. Yet U.S. feelings of rage about waterboarding were never directed at those who perpetrated and those who approved that torture, so people like George W. Bush and former vice president Cheney and the many under them in the chain of command who carried out these outrageous acts have never been brought to trial. When it's ISIS that commits these abuses, we are encouraged to think of their actions as reasons for war; when it's our U.S. leaders who commit the same abuses, we don't even think it sufficient reason to put them in prison! *On the other hand*, my outrage at acts that we in the U.S. have committed does not diminish my outrage at what ISIS is doing, if the media accounts are even partially correct, and my desire to want to stop them before more people are murdered. But how? Not in a way that will have even worse consequences, in the way that the U.S. ouster of Saddam Hussein’s (who should have spent the rest of his life in prison) led to the growth of ISIS. Our inclination always at *Tikkun* is to ask the following question of any group espousing hateful ideas (including haters among Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist fundamentalist movements; followers of secular right-wing or fascist groups; and those who adhere to the ultra-nationalistic, ultra-militaristic tendencies within American and Israeli nationalism, as well as any other kind of nationalism): *What are the underlying needs that these movements are speaking to that might be legitimate needs of the people who respond to them? And how do we then develop strategies to separate those legitimate needs from the fascistic, racist, or irrational ways that people seek to meet those needs through these hateful and sometimes violent movements?* These are the questions that I've answered in some detail in my books *The Politics of Meaning*,* Spirit Matters*, and *The Left Hand of God: Taking Back our Country from the Religious Right*. The goal is not to excuse outrageous and murderous acts, but to figure out how to disempower the murderers, whether they be American, Iraqi, Chinese, Russian, Israeli, or from Hamas. The goal is to ensure that their followers don't move on to some other equally terrible movement or murderous sect or religion or nationalism once these particular murderers are gone. If you read those books you'll see why I’m inclined to think that Swanson is moving in a good direction but lacks some of the psychological and spiritual tools necessary to make his strategy successful. One of those tools is a Global Marshall Plan (please download it at tikkun.org/GMP <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=5wxAwC4J5F3umCAEJL6jhFlYUFiz8M…> and read the full 32-page brochure). The problem with mentioning the GMP is that people immediately think it's primarily about giving money. But it's not. It is predicated on a strategy of showing respect and genuine caring for the well-being of all people on the planet. This caring would be conveyed partly through money, but more importantly through a fundamental transformation brought about by the Western world in adopting the New Bottom Line laid out in detail at tikkun.org/covenant <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=sYYPojvg2x4yQDHCqYDQS4PdJffS3F…> . Without that approach, the United States will have no tools for dealing with ISIS, and so inevitably the people of this country will fall back onto violence and war making. “Fine,” you may say, “but what are we supposed to do NOW? Don't you realize that these people are a real menace?” That may be true, but the reason it’s true is because people always go to that formulation—the one that led us into a war to overthrow Saddam Hussein in the first place without having any idea of what could replace him. Without that alternative, Swanson's point is that we created the preconditions for the rise of ISIS. So, truth is, I don’t know what we should do with ISIS in the short run, except to follow some of the steps that Swanson proposes, other steps that are defined in the Global Marshall Plan and in the Network of Spiritual Progressives' Spiritual Covenant at spiritualprogressives.org <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=Nn5Keqe%2FMLCgttmEXbWsyVlYUFiz…>, and yet others that I'll propose in a subsequent article within the next few weeks. While these steps may not be sufficient, I know for sure that taking any other path that doesn't *also* include these steps is bound to simply recreate the set of circumstances that have led us into the current mess. The one thing I'm sure about: if some kind of intervention is justified, and I think it may be, it should be genuinely led by the United Nations and *not* by the United States. And it should not occur solely at the initiative of the United States. If the people of the world are ready to take some action, let us follow their leadership rather than intervene alone—U.S. hands are, as they say in law, “dirty hands” and hence not able to provide ethically credible leadership. So please do read Swanson’s insightful article. And then please also read David Sylvester’s post on Tikkun Daily <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=w9g3j9Ahy4au9Fg7aToJ0VlYUFiz8M…> with its call for the Abrahamic religions to lead an international summit of religious forces to develop a response to the increasingly murderous realities we face. *Meanwhile, have a joyous Labor Day 2014! Wouldn’t it be great if this year working people used this day off to figure out how to take back control of our country from the super-rich and powerful so that we too could participate in the discussions that the elite have about which wars to drag us into? Maybe next year?* —Rabbi Michael Lerner (RabbiLerner.tikkun(a)gmail.com) ------------------------------ *What to Do About ISIS* *by David Swanson* *Originally published on warisacrime.org <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=TmQfep66DHMWpy%2Fi5c2vr1lYUFiz…>* Start by recognizing where ISIS came from. The U.S. and its junior partners destroyed Iraq, left a sectarian division, poverty, desperation, and an illegitimate government in Baghdad that did not represent Sunnis or other groups. Then the U.S. armed and trained ISIS and allied groups in Syria, while continuing to prop up the Baghdad government, providing Hellfire missiles with which to attack Iraqis in Fallujah and elsewhere. ISIS has religious adherents but also opportunistic supporters who see it as the force resisting an unwanted rule from Baghdad and who increasingly see it as resisting the United States. It is in possession of U.S. weaponry provided directly to it in Syria and seized from the Iraqi government. At last count by the U.S. government, 79 percent of weapons transferred to Middle Eastern governments come from the United States, not counting transfers to groups like ISIS, and not counting weapons in the possession of the United States. So, the first thing to do differently going forward: stop bombing nations into ruins, and stop shipping weapons into the area you've left in chaos. Libya is of course another example of the disasters that U.S. wars leave behind them—a war, by the way, with U.S. weapons used on both sides, and a war launched on the pretext of a claim well documented to have been false that Gaddafi was threatening to massacre civilians. So, here's the next thing to do: be very skeptical of humanitarian claims. The U.S. bombing around Erbil to protect Kurdish and U.S. oil interests was initially justified as bombing to protect people on a mountain. But most of those people on the mountain were in no need of rescue, and that justification has now been set aside, just as Benghazi was. Recall also that Obama was forced to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq when he couldn't get the Iraqi government to give them immunity for crimes they commit. He has now obtained that immunity and back in they go, the crimes preceding them in the form of 500-pound bombs. While trying to rescue hostages and discovering an empty house, and racing to a mountain to save 30,000 people but finding 3,000 and most of those not wanting to leave, the U.S. claims to know exactly whom the 500-pound bombs are killing. But whomever they are killing, they are generating more enemies, and they are building support for ISIS, not diminishing it. So, now the U.S. finds itself on the opposite side of the war in Syria, so what does it do? Flip sides! Now the great moral imperative is not to bomb Assad but to bomb in defense of Assad, the only consistent point being that "something must be done" and the only conceivable something is to pick some party and bomb it. But why is that the only conceivable thing to be done? I can think of some others: 1. Apologize for brutalizing the leader of ISIS in Abu Ghraib and to every other prisoner victimized under U.S. occupation. 2. Apologize for destroying the nation of Iraq and to every family there. 3. Begin making restitution by delivering aid (not "military aid" but actual aid, food, medicine) to the entire nation of Iraq. 4. Apologize for role in war in Syria. 5. Begin making restitution by delivering actual aid to Syria. 6. Announce a commitment not to provide weapons to Iraq or Syria or Israel or Jordan or Egypt or Bahrain or any other nation anywhere on earth and to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from foreign territories and seas, including Afghanistan. (The U.S. Coast Guard in the Persian Gulf has clearly forgotten where the coast of the U.S. is!) 7. Announce a commitment to invest heavily in solar, wind, and other green energy and to provide the same to democratic representative governments. 8. Begin providing Iran with free wind and solar technologies -- at much lower cost of course than what it is costing the U.S. and Israel to threaten Iran over a nonexistent nuclear weapons program. 9. End economic sanctions. 10. Send diplomats to Baghdad and Damascus to negotiate aid and to encourage serious reforms. 11. Send journalists, aid workers, peace workers, human shields, and negotiators into crisis zones, understanding that this means risking lives, but fewer lives than further militarization risks. 12. Empower people with agricultural assistance, education, cameras, and internet access. 13. Launch a communications campaign in the United States to replace military recruitment campaigns, focused on building sympathy and desire to serve as critical aid workers, persuading doctors and engineers to volunteer their time to travel to and visit these areas of crisis. 14. Work through the United Nations on all of this. 15. Sign the United States on to the International Criminal Court and voluntarily propose the prosecution of top U.S. officials of this and the preceding regimes for their crimes. <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=6rn3w%2FLU7QEzzF5oOIoT2VlYUFiz…> ------------------------------ Click here to unsubscribe <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=7zkCqRbUxbJ4r4sTgh8iPFlYUFiz8M…> if you are having trouble unsubscribing Click here <kay(a)tikkun.org> Copyright 2014 Tikkun Magazine.
