Fwd: [members] Testbed to develop P2P collaboration platform (P2Pvalue.cc)

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Wouter Tebbens <wouter(a)freeknowledge.eu> Date: Fri, Jul 11, 2014 at 2:33 PM Subject: [members] Testbed to develop P2P collaboration platform (P2Pvalue.cc) To: Discussions about the FTA <fta-discussion(a)freeknowledge.eu> Cc: members(a)lists.p2pvalue.eu Dear Free Knowledge Free Technology community, good friends of mine are developing an online platform that will help p2p communities help manage tasks, track reputation and real time collaborative authoring. It's architecture is a federated network based on the Apache Wave protocol, [1] (donated by Google some years ago). It's free software and based on open protocols. Privacy by design. Before they had developed the Kune.cc platform, but it has become too complex for the purpose so they've restarted development, trying to keep things as simple as possible. The prototype will be advancing this summer and they're interested to have feedback from interested communities. Also, they'll choose up to four communities that they'll provide with support and development to put our (if we want) desires into the platform, during the coming two years (they've got funding till 2016 from the EC). In the P2Pvalue project 300 commons based peer production communities have been researched to find out about legal, economical, social and technical aspects as well as their perceived value. Despite this being a prototype still, I think it might be a great opportunity to implement some of our ideas we discussed here to self-organise our community and in particular ideas we discussed in the context of the Free Technology Guild. We can benefit from this project and I think we can provide very useful inputs as well. BTW, they use Redmine to keep track of the development and work with 8 day development sprint cycles, see [2]. [1] https://incubator.apache.org/wave/ [2] http://grasia.fdi.ucm.es/p2pvalue/redmine/projects/p2p-value Below follows the invitation they wrote themselves. best, Wouter In the P2Pvalue project (*) we want to build a free/open source software web-tool that will facilitate the work of "commons-based peer production" communities... communities like yours. We will build it following a participatory design approach, i.e. we will select a few communities and we will build a web-tool that tries to fulfill their needs and facilitate their everyday work. The web-tool will grow and evolve depending on what the communities request, although we can already say that it follows a task-oriented approach (group task management), will be usable on mobile/tablet/desktop, and will enable collaborative writing. Other possible features may be scheduling, agreement follow-ups, activity organization, subgroups. You can see a very basic version at http://prototype.p2pvalue.eu Would your community be interested? This would imply that you would have the opportunity to shape the web-tool to fit your needs concerning collaborative work. The only request we make is that you provide feedback on how you find the tool, and possible improvements that you would make in order for it to fit your group better. We can have a meeting with you to resolve any doubts you may have before you make a commitment. (*) P2Pvalue is a European project funded by the European Commission and involves several European research groups, with the following aims: (1) Enhancing community sustainability by adopting the governance, legal, economic, and technical infrastructures that favour value creation and resilience; (2) Supporting the contributors with systems of reward that allow value to flow back to the creators; (3) Integrating the functionalities of online social networking services and collaborative software in a privacy-aware platform based on a decentralised architecture. dear willi, you accused me of being a cia agent, an austrian economist and other false and other undocumented things, which xabier took pains to reprint recently; even though you now refrain from it. I see many such routine false accusations, such as lately with allianza solidaria so, I apologize, but I don't want to engage with you; I don't see your culture as much different as that of the flok mgt, i.e. part of the problem , not part of the solution if others want to engage with you, and you refrain from unwarranted accusations here, that is fine; but I am not playing, just so you know, so don't expect me too (your emails are filtered, I don't see most of them) Michel -- *Please note an intrusion wiped out my inbox on February 8; I have no record of previous communication, proposals, etc ..* P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

This support is crucial: it is thanks to you that we can strive for: - A real protection of Net Neutrality [2] and non-discrimination of data; - The protection of privacy [3] against the surveillance of governments and corporations; - The adaptation of copyright [4] to current cultural practices and the legalisation of non-commercial sharing of digital works among individuals; - Freedom of expression [5] against censorship; - The exclusion of clauses that jeopardise our fundamental rights from international agreements [6] (TAFTA, CETA, TISA, ACTA, etc); - The involvement [7] of everyone in the democratic life and the public debate; - The defense of the Internet that we love and that respects us <3 La Quadrature du Net aims to develop citizen awareness and empowerement. We do not want to be fighting for you from afar but we want to fight all together for all of us by involving [8] you at the heart of our campaigns and projects. This is why any way you support La Quadrature du Net is essential, whether it's financial, moral, active, volunteer, or on a daily-basis. That's why we are counting on you and continued support and donations. This past year has shown us that, more than ever, (citizen) mobilisation is crucial to protect and extend our liberties: against the massive and global surveillance carried out without any legal framework revealed by Edward Snowden (in France, the military program law voted in December works towards legalising such surveillance), with crucial stakes in the legal definition of Net neutrality at the European level, against the numerous attempts to extend private censorship, against the dispositions concerning our fundamental rights from international agreements such as TAFTA, CETA and the EU data retention directive, we must be vigilant and work as hard as possible with as many tools and means possible. background to Gordon's report

dear Gordon, it would be better to try to keep a more civil tone, even if you and others have been subjected to character assasination and disinformation campaigns and feel justififiably angry. For example, instead of writing "xabier is a totally unprincipled liar', you could factually say, 'Xabier's charges are untrue', and just give a rundown of the facts from p2p-es, I think I understood that xabier tried to join this list but was unable too ? my understanding is this list is based on self-registration. Thanks for anyone who can help. we've really tried over the years to keep a civil tone here, though I profoundly disgagree with the technique of character assasination and disinformation that was so generic to the flok mgt style, I want to re-iterate that we did not purposefully exclude anyone from joining the list here, of course, such practices have no place in p2p culture and a list such as here, which is why it is so important not to emulate here but let's keep it here to facts and arguments, and avoid direct personal attacks, Michel -- *Please note an intrusion wiped out my inbox on February 8; I have no record of previous communication, proposals, etc ..* P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Acoustic Space, Vol. 12 Edited by Rasa Smite, Armin Medosch and Raitis Smits ISBN-13: 978-9934843419 312 pages (English edition) Techno-ecological perspectives have become now one of the key directions in contemporary discourses and are part of a larger paradigm shift from new media to post-media art. A range of practices which were once subsumed under terms such as media art, digital art, art and technology or art and science, have experienced such growth and diversification that no single term can work as as a label any more. Traditionally separated domains are brought together to become contextual seedbeds for ideas and practices that aim to overcome the crisis of the present and to invent new avenues for future developments. This is the 2nd volume in the Acoustic Space series that continues to build a 'techno-ecological' perspective whereby new artistic practices are discussed that combine ecological, social, scientific and artistic inquiries. Edited and published in the context of the exhibition Fields, it makes a perspective its own that sees art as a catalyst for change and transformations. This volume gives various insights into research tactics and strategies which form the larger context of the FIELDS exhibition which takes place in Riga, Latvia, The Arsenals Exhibition Hall of the Latvian National Museum of Art (May 15 - August 3, 2014, http://fields.rixc.lv) while the texts included here are mainly contributions from two earlier conferences - Media Art Histories 2013: RENEW, the 5th International Conference on the Histories of Media Art, Science and Technology held in Riga, Latvia, October 8-11, 2013, and the Art+Communication 2012 festival conference Art of Resilience , Riga, Latvia, October 5-6, 2012. background to Gordon's report
by Michel Bauwens 10 Jul '14

10 Jul '14

This is a reponse to what Xabier writes about Gordon's report. Pardon, demasiado complicado para escribir en espagnol. let me first say that I agree that Gordon's report is biased, but that does not make it untrue. It is biased because once he had been deceived three times in a row, publicly threatened with censorship and non-payment, and subject to an intense campaign of disinformation and lies, which continues to this day, he got understandably angry and started looking for negative information to explain what had happened to him. But that doesn't make the chargnes in the document untrue, it just means they are unbalanced. For balance, and for the record. Gordon Cook was promised $4k for a report. This was then unilaterally changed to $3500 on condition that he would come to the summit. Gordon Cook informed that with a spinal operation, it was impossible for him to travel economy in cramped conditions. I was physically present twice when this agreement and promise was made to him, by Daniel Vazquez. When Gordon was informed this promise would not be kept, he was publicly threatened with censorship and non-payment. But in fact, since he could not attend without a business class ticket, and he could not be paid without attendance, this effectively meant he would not be payed in effect. Now of course, Daniel denies making promise, and I could have been in a mental state of confusion twice, but given the rather systematic non-keeping of engagements, which I can document extensively, I would say occam's razors dictate that a change of mind is the easier explanation. Note that there was no obligation to change that decision, it was a pragmatic decision to spend the money differently, as admitted by DV. Gordon was accused of the following things and apologies if they charges sound ridiculous, because of course they are. These charges were leveled internally and privately by DV, and relayed publicly and repeatedly by Bernardo Gutierrez, who continued levelling them even after being informed of facts to the contrary. This is why I wrote the 'parting with bernardo Gutierrez' letter, because it is one thing to spread disinformation out of igorance, or privately, but another thing to continue even when you are aware of the facts. 1) Gordon Cook did not exist. Obviously false, since I met him <g> 2) Gordon Cook is CIA .. not a shred of evidence 3) Gordon Cook was a front for Robert Steele .. well , what can you say ?? 4) Gordon Cook is a neocon : demonstrably false, read gordon's reporting on progressive telecom and internet infrastructure reform Particularly nefarious was the internal disinformation, in which we were told that Gordon's report was an adolescent rant. As we had 15 reports to review, this pushed gordon's to the end. Only to discover then that it was rather excellent and took just two afternoons of back and forth to make it into a fine report. I have no idea why Gordon Cook was singled out for this particular treatment; why so many lies, why such a systematic breaking of engagements. But the background is the following: 1) as research team we were systematically subjected to such broken engagements, not once, but repeatedly, which is why most of us did not invite our networks to the Summit 2) everyone who was scapegoated in the project was subjected to minor forms of the same treatment. Whether Bethany Horne, Andres Delgado, Gordon Cook or perhaps even others, it was not possible to leave the project without being thoroughly trashed, and subject to character assisination, defamation, and disinformation campaigns. I was myself violently attacked without about 99% false accusations by PDS, who subsequently proceeded to wreck the 'urban mesa' and faced a general revolt there; obviously the attacks on my character were kept indoors, but if I had not been protected by my reputation and network, I have little doubt I would be subjected to the same treatment. In fact, I was, and Bernardo Gutierrez, after publicly threatening to publish my private emails, also publicly spread false information. For example that I 'defend fora do eixo because I am getting a free PhD from Ivana Bentes'. Though the accusations were mostly ridiculous, they are nevertheless symptomatic of a particular 'paranoid' state of mind. So, while Cook's report may be one-sided, his charges are mostly well documented, as acknowledged by Xabier (screenshots, citations); so they may be one-sided, but since they are documented, they are not defamatory, despite xabier's claim. But the undocumented and unproven charges to Gordon, which I outlined above, were definitely defamatory and contrary to truth. By treating Gordon so systematically in a dishonourable way, the flok mgt has created a monster that will haunt them forever. All the other reports by Gordon, such as the ones on Guifi.net, are well documented and well written and recommended reading. His FLOK report is mostly interesting as an anthropological account of a particular management style. Let's hope it stays confined to Ecuador, but Bernardo's public threats would indicate that there is a danger there is an attempt to export them. However, I don't think it will be successful. My recommendation to the flok mgt is: stop trashing Gordon, it will backfire. You will be judged, not how you treat your friends, but how you treat your enemies. and there is something particularly shameful about systematically mistreating an old man with severe health problems and not paying someone for 3 months of research work even though you had the money to do it. Other researchers, be warned. Please note that despite repeated promises, not one charge of Gordon Cook has been refuted, and probably because they can't (disclaimer: i have only read the summary and scanned the full report); this is why they attack Gordon as a person. The critique that Gordon may have published private emails, is particularly unreceivable given Bernardo's public threat to publish my own private emails. [en] I have repeatedly said that I will not get to appreciate the defamatorypseudo-report Gordon Cook. I think anyone who tries to read its over 100 pages is going to realize how biased that is: screenshots, private information disclosed without permission, includingimages, etc.. not to mention it's completely biased pseudo-interviews, who gives voice and who does not, how, etc.. All Cook Report are copyright restrictive (business model based consultancies), except this, but is yet to put either thefine the copyleft and is arguably before the law. In any case, the suspicion of bias arise in anyone document minimally informed and aware of the world that is copyleft, commons etc. In short, do not waste time with that because that Bernardoreport undermines itself. Although I subscribe to 100% whichyou comment. As things lived, Gordon Cook caught a fat reboundbecause he could not afford the trip he needed. From therestarted a merciless war. So that sad I have lived. -- *Please note an intrusion wiped out my inbox on February 8; I have no record of previous communication, proposals, etc ..* P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Re: [P2P-F] an evaluation of the flok
by Michel Bauwens 10 Jul '14

10 Jul '14

Thanks for the first spate of reactions: orsan, willi, Kevin First thing, yes Orsan, the hard politics of p2p transition in the existing context of capital-state-polity-policy-funding-culture.. that is the key issue we have to deal with, and I hope to add my own efforts to this, as soon as my homecoming fever is over .. Willi and Kevin, you both pose the specific problem of the Partner State. I think there are really big misunderstandings if the relative failure of Ecuador is interpreted to mean that it means the failure of the Partner State. The Ecuadorian state is not a partner state, it's a market state, though different from the neoliberal one. I interpret as a state that wants to rebalance the market state towards local sovereignity and the local bourgeoisie. It represented a different type of class alliance that wanted to strengthen the local state to tame international capital for its own ends. After a more radical phase after 2007, it is now slowly retreating and seeking a new accomodation with Empire. The results are a mixed bag of very strong social justice results, but a disempowering of civil society as a collective force. It is remarkable that after meeting more than 70 different civic groups, I could not find a single one that supported the government, and even the ones that one did, are now alienated from it. The Ecuadorian state is technocratic, 'knows best' and dislikes participation. They dislike indepedent civic groups as much as, if not more, than neoliberal capital. So-called neosocialism is a statist approach to make Ecuador fit for a socially better kind of capitalism. It's mostly better than what existed before (though quite a few civic groups disagree and say they have less freedom now), but it's neither socialism nor p2p nor participatory. The second important point is that while we can never idealize the state, the big and central question remains: 1) is it possible to imagine a class society without a state ? My answer is no, as who would stop the homeless of going into empty houses, or elite paramilitaries to take away the land of the farmers ... While failed states are possible, they are generally worse. I am not aware of big migrations to Somalia, nor of colombian urban dwellers to the lands of the paramilitaries, but am only aware of the opposite. People able to vote with their feet, flee stateless regions 2) is it possible to imagine abolishing class society by fiat. My answer is no. Therefore in any transition period, there will be a state to defend the mass of the people and their democracy against attempts at restoration. Thus the state is simply unavoidable. So the question becomes, what kind of state. My answer is the partner state, a state where the people themselves are the state, and the historical precedents are of course the greek polis and the free medieval city states described by the anarchist Kropotkin. If you agree, I don't care what other name you use for it, that is the partner state we are talking about, nothing else can be it. The third question is: what do we do in the meantime. My answer is 1) build autonomous social organisation 2) engage with the state to fight bad legislation and promote good legislation 3) create prefigurative partner state policies where the people's forces have majorities. So back the question: does the relative failure of flok prove anything about the failure of the partner state concept ? My answer is: the opposite. Ecuador shows that anything but a partner state approach is relatively doomed. It wasn't a partner state, we thought a prefigurative experiment was possible, and it wasn't. But micro-experiments, like in Sigchos, are still possible, and worth fighting for. Retrouvez l’article original ici : The Politics of Pachamama : Natural Resource Extraction vs. Indigenous Rights and the Environment in Latin America De bon matin, il y a de cela plus de dix ans, j’avais interviewé Evo Morales à Cochabamba, en Bolivie.
