Everyone has been following the mobilizations going on in Brazil with strikes and demonstration by workers and popular organizations expressing their indignation about the World Cup with its astronomic costs and corruption, all in function of the interests of the multinational companies and FIFA. But at the same time people have been .putting forward their concrete struggles making demands for salaries, rights, housing, better public services. They have denounced repression and criminalization of dissent, etc. At this moment, the transit workers in Sao Paulo are in the fifth day of a strike which began last Thursday. The transport workers carry 4,000,000 passengers every day in the city where, next Thursday, June 12, the opening of the World Cup will take place. Because this strike is so important, the government has decided that it has to be defeated come what may. It is seeking to impose an end to the strike and also prevent the mobilizations from escalating in the coming days. Brazilian Justice, working hand in hand with the interests of the government, big business and FIFA declared the strike illegal today and demanded that the transit workers return to work immediately. It has established a daily fine of US$ 250,000 on their union for non-compliance. This decision by the Justice Ministry allows the government to dismiss the strikers, contravening all their legal and economic rights. We are counting on the support and solidarity of all the Brazilian union centrals that are organization initiatives in support of the strike (see note below) The Union and the workers have decided to continue the strike, despite the government’s orders, in order to defend their demands and also to defend their right to strike. We need your support and solidarity. Send messages to the e-mails below, post photos on social networks, broadcast this call on your lists and web sites Full support for the Sao Paulo Transit Workers Response to the demands of the transit sector In defence of the right to strike! No to repression, no punishment! Alckman negotiate! Photo by Victor Moriyama/Getty Images With the World Cup set to start in São Paulo on Thursday, Brazil’s largest city has been racked by work stoppages that have created an unprecedented crisis for the country’s already fragile labor system. After a Friday in which striking mass transit workers brought the city to a grinding halt <http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2014/06/06/transit_strike_brazil_sao…>, São Paulo’s labor court ruled on Sunday that the strikes were not legal, reports the AFP <https://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/24191404/court-rules-sao-paulo-subway-str…>. This was the first time in the history of the court that it had been opened on a Sunday to issue such a ruling, says labor judge Homero Batista Mateus da Silva. Homero works on São Paulo’s labor court, but in a different division than the one that decided the fate of the striking workers. “Everybody is afraid of waiting for Monday or Tuesday,” Homero, who is also a professor of labor law at the University of São Paulo, told me over email. “This is amazing and for us is a brand-new world.” "The court ruled the strike was abusive. We are going to have an assembly [this afternoon] and vote whether to continue the strike or not," said union spokesman Thiago Marcelino Pereira after the ruling was announced. Even though the court ruled against the strikers, enforcing the ruling may be a challenge. The subway union has already scoffed at $44,000 fines <http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/soccer/2014/06/05/brazil-metro-trains-…> levied by another judge for each day of full strikes. *(Update, June 9, 2014, 8:30 a.m. EST: On Sunday, the labor court increased the fine to $220,000 per day going forward. The subway workers voted to continue striking indefinitely <http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-27757619> despite the ruling.)* “The fines are not sufficient, nor respected,” said Homero. “They pay it five, 10 years after, so it is not effective.” A major problem is that the Brazilian legal system had not been set up to resolve public-sector labor disputes until last year when the Supreme Court ruled that a 1989 national labor law that had been restricted to private-sector employees was now applicable to public-sector ones. “This decision came as a huge surprise, since the Supreme Court has avoided it for a long time, but the huge silence from Congress for the past decades has forced the U-turn,” said Homero. Still, because the 1989 law was written with the private sector in mind, it is a poor mechanism for authorities to negotiate with public employees. Homero said that because public-sector employees have largely been unable to access the labor courts to resolve disputes via arbitration, “their strikes are much more violent, widespread and long” than in the private sector. Police unions have said that they may ignore a Supreme Court injunction <http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/06/07/subway-workers-strike-in-brazilian-…> not to strike during the World Cup. The government of Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff, who is facing re-election in October, has said it would call on the military to prevent protests from disrupting World Cup matches <http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/22/us-brazil-worldcup-protests-idUSB…> if it came to that. Brazilian police used tear gas, rubber bullets, and stun grenades <http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory/brazil-strikes-threat-smooth-world-c…> against subway workers during Friday’s strikes. “The absence of [strong public labor] laws is responsible for many problems,” Homero said. “As far as I know, some unions are not intimidated [by threats of military force]!” The subway workers were asking for a pay hike of 12.2 percent <http://online.wsj.com/articles/sao-paulo-subway-operator-says-all-lines-run…>, having rejected an offer from the state government company that runs the subway system for an 8.7 percent raise. The past two months have seen strikes from teachers unions, police unions, and bus unions. Federal police who had threatened to go on strike received a 16 percent raise <http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-27678013>, while striking bus drivers received a 10 percent pay increase <http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/06/06/319491937/striking-train-wor…> . Striking workers cite salaries that have suffered under inflation as a main cause for the stoppages, with government statistics released on Friday showing that the country’s consumer price index rose 6.37 percent in the last year. They also note the enormous bill—more than $11 billion <http://online.wsj.com/articles/labor-strikes-roil-brazil-ahead-of-world-cup…>—the country has footed to pay for the World Cup and wonder why more of that money hasn’t been spent on public employees. “[The] World Cup has turned out to be a tremendous opportunity for wages and better conditions efforts,” said Homero. “Even those who have been quiet for some years, as the buses and trains drivers, have awakened.” The subway system is supposed to be the main mode of transportation for fans planning to attend Thursday’s World Cup opener between Brazil and Croatia. The country’s labor minister, Manoel Dias, has described recent work stoppages as crass opportunism <http://online.wsj.com/articles/labor-strikes-roil-brazil-ahead-of-world-cup…>. "Many strikes are inexplicable," Dias said after a series of strikes two weeks ago. "Workers have had higher-than-inflation salary increases." Public-sector strikes in Brazil are not uncommon, and are beginning to frustrate citizens. “Ordinary Brazilian people are so tired and so disgusted that they do not count any more that the essential public services will be available the whole year,” says Homero. “Public teachers' strikes are on an annual basis, evolving from 30 to 90 days. Parents are used to seeing their children at home many working days a year.” The lack of ability by the political system to negotiate effectively with public-sector employees has partially to do with Brazil’s shoddy historical treatment of labor. Prior to the 1988 Constitution and the end of Brazil’s military dictatorship, strikes were treated as a “crime and then as an un-Brazilian activity,” according to Homero. “I have a feeling that the way Brazil has treated strikes during [its military dictatorship] has proved to be wrong and has backfired,” Homero said. “Any president or politician that dares to make a speech about the need of some rules are immediately considered right-wing or [an] enemy of the workers. That’s why civil servants (and the military included) have absolutely no rule concerning strikes. No rule at all. They can do whatever they want, whenever they want.” Homero said he empathizes with workers seeking better conditions, and that’s why he wishes that a better arbitration system were in place to resolve such disputes. Concerns about this World Cup had centered mainly on fears of a repeat of last year’s mass demonstrations, when millions of Brazilians took to the streets to protest the billions that were being spent to host the tournament instead of being spent on infrastructure needs <http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_spot/2014/05/20/paulo_ito_world_cup_a_brazil…> for the creaky education and health systems. The work stoppages that have taken place have involved many fewer participants, relatively speaking, but have still proved to be disruptive. A recent poll showed that a majority of Brazilians now view the nation’s decision to host the World Cup <http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_world_/2014/06/03/majority_of_brazilians_say…> as a bad one. The tournament kicks off this Thursday at São Paulo’s Arena Corinthians, which was still incomplete <http://www.npr.org/blogs/parallels/2014/06/05/318925781/as-brazil-barrels-t…> as of last week. The ‘smart city’ is promoted as its primary site of materialisation: the integration of computational systems with architectural design turns inefficient urban settings into smart cities that manifest as the penultimate value-extraction machines. Yet the contested history of this transformation, and much of its politics, remains largely unwritten. This workshop investigates the urban dimensions of ubiquitous computing and infrastructural organization at different scales – the home, the neighbourhood, the city, the region – which merge in a common, exchangeable currency of data. The workshop focuses specifically on the pre-history of ubiquitous computing, its status as media infrastructure, its complicity with logistics, as well as its virtual futures. Such an approach to smart urban environments is embedded in a theoretical trajectory which questions the accustomed self-descriptions of a mediated society – as a new infrastructure of living and dwelling. Town-planning has, since the early 20th century, relied on ecological concepts of environmental transformations. By drawing a line from these early urban development plans to todays digital infrastructures, it becomes evident that the current condition of smart cities has to be understood as part of a transition of environments from natural habitats to objects of planning, management and control. Yet what are the operational logics of this infrastructure? Pervaded by visible and invisible networks, the city becomes a playground for global corporations to play and experiment with technologies of surveillance, big data and endless feedback loops, continuously improving the passageways of commerce. The smartness here is that of technical systems that render urbanites into subjects of cybernetic management, supposedly empowered by their involvement in perfectly organised urban environments, whether it be in terms of efficiency or sustainability. Logistics is what defines not only the internal flows of the city but what links them up. Where the smart city expands, is duplicated and traded in a protocological fashion, logistical infrastructure - transport and software - connects the smart cities in an intelligent web that only knows its own protocological rules and limits. Logistics reveals the logic of smart cities as that of trade and circulation: of data, things and people. The coincidence between the smart city and logistics implies a certain foreclosure of its possibilities and virtual futures. Many accounts of smart cities recognise the historical coincidence of cybernetic control and neoliberal capital. Even where it is machines which process the vast amounts of data produced by the city so much so that the ruling and managerial classes disappear from view, it is usually the logic of capital that steers the flows of data, people and things. Yet what other futures of the city may be possible within the smart city, what collective intelligence may it bring forth? Can one fathom the possible others of the logistical city e.g. in the visions of the cybernetic revolutionaries of Project Cybersyn or the cyberpunks of the 1990s? What other historical or contemporary examples of resistances to or alternative visions of ubiquitous computing in city could one draw on? Boik To: michel(a)p2pfoundation.net new book "Economic Direct Democracy" by John C. Boik Dear friends and colleagues, I am happy to announce that my new book "Economic Direct Democracy: A Framework to End Poverty and Maximize Well-Being" has just been published. A free PDF version can be downloaded from the Principled Societies Project website (www.PrincipledSocietiesProject.org <http://principledsocietiesproject.org/lists/lt.php?id=ehhTSAYaBw9XAg>). The book can also be purchased from Amazon and other outlets in paperback and Kindle formats. In brief, the book describes a new, local economic framework that could help cities and regions increase wages, reduce income inequality, reduce unemployment, improve well-being, and raise funds for infrastructure repair, climate change, and other important issues. Nonprofits and schools also benefit from the new source of funding. I invite you to visit the website, view information, and download the book. Fwd: Arts and Culture: Integral to Transition

[image: Kosmos Newsletter] <http://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c14…> JUNE 10, 2014 NEWSLETTER Arts and Culture: Integral to Transition By now, most people are acutely aware of the need for change. Yet cultural change comes slowly. How will we shift the values of people and institutions quickly enough to avert the ecological and economic disasters we hear predicted daily. Can it be done in one generation? Two? Where will the inspiration for global transformation come from? This week, the full moon on Thursday marks World Invocation Day, a day of prayer and meditation for a growing network of servers and seekers. The Great Invocation <http://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c14…> is a world prayer translated into 70 languages and dialects -a call for the spiritual direction needed to create right relationships on earth. It coincides with the start on Friday of the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Peace on September 21st, themed: The People’s Right to Peace. We know that prayer alone will not actualize radical change. Political activism alone is not enough either. We must, in fact, use every means available to turn hearts and minds toward the principles of peace and sharing. In this newsletter we share some interesting ideas about the role the Arts can play in changing cultural mindsets. Alain Ruche, a Kosmos Global Ambassador, writes in the current edition of *Kosmos Journal* about the role artists play grounding our essential humanity: “Artists have never been more integral to the functioning of society. Artists are vibrant actors in street life, home life, interactions between people, between people and objects, and maybe soon, also between machines. Artists can explore what it means to be human at a time when people and machines are becoming integrated.” In *A New Theory of Growth*, a brilliant essay by Esko Kilpi Oy, we are reminded that artists are not isolated actors; creativity and innovation occurs only in the context of cultural connection. “The sociocultural context matters because creativity is a systemic rather than an individual phenomenon. Workable new solutions to our most pressing concerns will not appear by themselves as isolated ideas of independent people. Creativity is born in connections and in enriching interaction.” Artists have been bearing witness and in many ways even influencing revolutionary events in Ukraine these past four months. Read *Icons on the Barricades: Ukrainian Protest Art.* The compelling ability of images to tell the story of the new civilization inspires our dedication to filling Kosmos Journal with transformative beauty. We are re-sharing one of our favorite artist portfolios, *A Soft Gaze into the Natural World, *sheer painted fabric veils that inspired activists on a 60 mile walk for clean energy from Ripton to Burlington, Vermont with Bill McKibben. And there is even more to share – beautiful words and works by Martin Hill and Dana Lynne Andersen. Enjoy it all with our deepest gratitude and care. May we be the change we wish to see. *Kosmos* ------------------------------ <http://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> Subscribe to Kosmos Journal Become a subscriber to Kosmos Journal today. Culture has been described as the social programming of minds. Recent collective and global transformative events have expanded participation in public and cultural activities to include interactions among individuals, non-profit organizations, corporations and many other entities. Many are calling this phenomenon international cultural engagement. Culture has always been present in international relations. Reciprocal gifts between ancient rulers aimed to show who they and their people were, to demonstrate power and to build lasting relationships. Culture became a component of soft power when states began to appear. During the Cold War, culture became a symbol of West-East confrontation. In the current foreign policy rapidly invaded by realpolitik, culture is regarded as desirable but not essential. However, in emerging countries, the cultural component of soft power is increasing. The center of Kyiv became a battlefield, with smoke from burning tires drifting overhead. Police bullets and gas grenades were met by Molotov cocktails and paving stones. During the last days of the month, while the street battle raged, masked and helmeted protesters and police in full riot gear saw a surreal sight. Seemingly oblivious of the chaos surrounding him, a young man set up an easel between the opposing forces and worked furiously for a few hours on an oil sketch of the city in revolt. The artist, Maksim Vegera, said later that he couldn’t resist the call of history. In the tradition of Delacroix or Daumier, he found inspiration on the barricades. He wasn’t the only one. >From the earliest days of the Ukrainian protests, artists have been at the center of events. We switched our views as we began to understand how the world worked. Whether this will help the human race or cause its downfall is debatable. But it would help if we realized the responsibility that comes with the new role. Our future is tied to human creativity. You would think that given its importance, creativity would have a very high priority among our concerns, but we face a disturbing reality if we look at what is really going on today. The arts are seen as dispensable luxuries and instead of exploring creative new solutions, cutting expenses is the approach of most managers trying to deal with global competition. What holds true for the arts and the economy, also applies to education. The models of mass society and mass production still prevail in the world of mass education. The industrial society is re-born daily at the expense of a different sociocultural context that would embrace creativity. Humans have been deeply rooted in ecology and totally dependent on local climate and food sources for ninety percent of the time we have existed on earth.I think the need for direct connection with the natural world is dialed into our genes. Disconnection is making us dysfunctional. Science has been telling us for some time that our way of life is threatening all forms of life including our own; unless we change direction we will end up where we are now heading—creating irreversible climate change, mass species extinctions and a collision with the natural limits of the planet. While art can reflect the tawdry realities and bitter truths of the world around it, it can also imagine a world beyond the obstacles, and in doing so inspire the solutions. Art can offer the despair of nihilism or the hope of inspiring vision. Art Can Uplift humanity The noble purpose of art is to uplift the consciousness of both its creator and viewer. Art has the power to nurture the heart, inspire the Soul, and awaken the dormant higher capacities which propel the evolution of humanity. Art has the power to bring hope and vision to the world. I just watched the following video about smartphones and their human cost. Warning, it's shocking. http://sharepowered.com/see-the-human-cost-of-your-iphone-and-it-will-shock… I wondered, how feasible is it to: - create a global professionally managed p2p brand (here: for smartphones, e.g. urphone.net) - fabricate "clean" (whatever is possible here) smart phones in regional fablabs or even hackerspaces under that brand - profits shared all over the brand I apologize for my impulsive post, it may be pure nonsense, but I wonder

It's called "*The Big Disconnect: Why the Internet Hasn't Transformed Politics (Yet) <http://techpresident.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8b4022bd4853e5600d5f…>*." I hope you'll check it out. But that's not why I'm writing you this email. A number of folks have been asking me why *The Big Disconnect* isn't available on Amazon (yet). Here's why: I want to support independent publishing, which isn't an easy thing to do in the Age of Amazon. My publisher, OR Books, is a small but successful four-year-old press that works closely with each of its authors. Since it isn't publishing hundreds of books a year, it can give each book real attention. An OR book is like a artisanal tomato from a nearby farm, rather than a homogenized product from a giant agribusiness. OR Books is also working hard to support and sustain a community of engaged readers. So each time OR publishes a new book, it starts by only selling it from its website, direct to you the reader. That way, when you buy a book from them, they can get to know you. (Amazon keeps all of that kind of customer data to itself, by contrast.) I also like that OR has been developing a rich and diverse line of books on technology and politics. How many other publishers treat "The Internet <http://techpresident.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=8b4022bd4853e5600d5…>" as a key part of their catalog? People like Julian Assange, Jacob Applebaum, Jeremie Zimmerman, Douglas Rushkoff, Laura Flanders, David Moon, Patrick Ruffini, and David Segal have also done books with them. So, right now, my new book is only available online from OR Books. I get that Amazon is really convenient, but it's just as easy to get books directly from OR. (They also sell DRM-free e-book versions that will happily work with your Kindle, iPad, Nook or Sony reader.) Eventually, we'll put *The Big Disconnect* up on Amazon. But just not yet. Apologies if you have already received a notice. All the best, Vinny To the Cloud: Big Data in a Turbulent World Vincent Mosco Paradigm Publishers: http://bit.ly/1igH8rT Amazon: http://amzn.to/QGu6YE Paperback ISBN: 978-1-61205-616-6 Hardcover ISBN: 978-1-61205-615-9 Book interview podcast: http://bit.ly/1kOPDdr In the wake of revelations about National Security Agency activities many of which occur in the cloud this book offers both enlightenment and a critical view. Cloud computing and big data are arguably the most significant forces in information technology today. In clear prose, To the Cloud explores where the cloud originated, what it means, and how important it is for business, government, and citizens. It describes the intense competition among cloud companies like Amazon and Google, the spread of the cloud to government agencies like the controversial NSA, and the astounding growth of entire cloud cities in China. From advertising to trade shows, the cloud and big data are furiously marketed to the world, even as dark clouds loom over environmental, privacy, and employment issues that arise from the cloud. Is the cloud the long-promised information utility that will solve many of the world s economic and social problems? Or is it just marketing hype? To the Cloud provides the first thorough analysis of the potential and the problems of a technology that may very well disrupt the world. Vincent Mosco (Ph.D. Harvard University) is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Queen’s University, where he held the Canada Research Chair in Communication and Society. Dr. Mosco is the author of numerous books and articles on the media and information technology, including The Political Economy of Communication and The Digital Sublime: Myth, Power, and Cyberspace. "Once again, Vinny Mosco is way ahead of the pack in understanding the great communication phenomena of our times. To the Cloud shines a powerful light on cloud computing, educating us all and providing critical analysis, nuance, and context. In the process, Mosco provides an indispensable resource for making sense of the digital age." --Robert W. McChesney, author of Digital Disconnect: How Capitalism Is Turning the Internet against Democracy "A towering figure in the political economy of communications, Vincent Mosco has taught generations of media scholars how to drill below the surface of corporate hype and decipher the sharp realities underlying apparently nebulous developments. Now he turns his formidable intelligence to the analysis of the cloud. This landmark publication is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the next phase of digital capitalism." --Ursula Huws, University of Hertfordshire Business School "Vincent Mosco has brilliantly demystified cloud computing and big data. He looks through the clouds to ask critical questions about how these new systems are being used, who controls them, and what the consequences are. To the Cloud brings us back down to earth and is an essential source for understanding these important new developments." --Janet Wasko, University of Oregon Table of Contents • The Cloud Ate My Homework • From the Computer Utility to Cloud Computing • Selling the Cloud Sublime • Dark Clouds • Big Data and Cloud Culture __________________ Vincent Mosco Professor Emeritus Queen's University www.queensu.ca/sociology/people/emeritusfaculty/mosco.html www.facebook.com/vincent.mosco https://twitter.com/VMosco -- 1. *EBook, November 2012: Recovering Internationalism <http://www.into-ebooks.com/book/recovering_internationalism/>.
