Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Only a Few Hours Left to Save the Internet!

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Wed, Apr 2, 2014 at 5:59 AM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Only a Few Hours Left to Save the Internet! To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Themes: NET NEUTRALITY, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, EUROPEAN SINGLE MARKET FOR ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS, PILAR DEL CASTILLO VERA, JENS ROHDE, CATHERINE TRAUTMANN, NEELIE KROES La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: http://www.laquadrature.net/en/only-a-few-hours-left-to-save-the-internet Only a Few Hours Left to Save the Internet! *** Brussels, 2 April 2014 -- In a few hours the European Parliament will vote on the regulation [1] concerning the European single market for electronic communications. This vote in plenary will be the most important vote on the rights and freedoms of citizens since the rejection of ACTA in July 2012. With the right amendments adopted, this text will put in place solid measures that protect Net Neutrality throughout the European Union. These have been tabled [2][3] but their adoption depends on a small number of votes, especially of those in the liberal group (ALDE). The outcome of the vote will either be the protection of competiton, innovation, users freedom of choice, and the freedom of expression and information or signal the end of the Internet as we know it. *** The number of parliamentarians in the groups that tabled the amendments adds to 372 [4] votes which almost represents an absolute majority in the 766-seat [5] European Parliament. With the support of independents [6] and some representatives from the centre-right EPP group, these amendments can therefore pass. Unfortunately, although ALDE tabled positive amendments, it is not certain that the whole group will vote in favour. Despite recommendations by civil society organisations, for instance those of La Quadrature du Net, parliamentarians, faced with important efforts by the lobby of big telecom and even by the European Commission, might be swayed to vote against the interest of the wider citizenry and small and medium entreprises [7]. In other words, every single vote is important tomorrow! This close to the European elections, parliamentarians are particularly receptive to citizens' messages - especially so as the vote tomorrow is recorded. Every call, email, fax could make the difference and lead to the real protection of the Internet and network neutrality. To your pi-phones [8] therefore to profit from the last remaining hours! * References * 1. http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?pubRef=-//EP//TEXT+REPORT+A7-… 2. https://www.laquadrature.net/wiki/Voting_List_1st_Plenary_Net_Neutrality 3. More specifically, it advocates for the adaptation of French and European legislations to respect the founding principles of the Internet, most notably the free circulation of knowledge. In addition to its advocacy work, the group also aims to foster a better understanding of legislative processes among citizens. Through specific and pertinent information and tools, La Quadrature du Net hopes to encourage citizens' participation in the public debate on rights and freedoms in the digital age. Fwd: New Unionism - Democratising Economics from the Workplace
by Michel Bauwens 02 Apr '14

02 Apr '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Peter Hall-Jones <phj(a)newunionism.net> Date: Mon, Mar 31, 2014 at 9:39 PM Subject: New Unionism - Democratising Economics from the Workplace To: newunionism(a)gmail.com March 2014 *Work in Progress* This newsletter is produced by the *New Unionism Network*<http://www.newunionism.net>to promote workplace democracy, organizing, internationalism and creative thinking in the union movement. You are most welcome to pass it on. Better still, find out about joining us *here*<http://www.newunionism.net/join.htm> . *Putting OCCUPATION back into unionism *[image: Guilds]Industrial unions replaced guilds and friendly societies during the first wave of new unionism - starting towards the end of the 19th century. Perhaps we lost something important along the way? Look at the way people talk about their work: we *do* jobs; but we *are* occupations. In our final paper on building global unionism, *Guy Standing* argues: *"what we do and seek to do is more important than who we do it for."* In fact, a revived focus on occupation within unionism might help us address some of our most difficult problems: » How do we organize and bargain across borders in an age of globalization? » How do we organize "the precariat", who come and go from workplaces before we can reach them? » How do we rebuilt influence whilst struggling to survive? What's more, an occupational layer might not require any major change to the underlying structure of industrial unions. This is an idea you need to think about! *More <http://newunionism.wordpress.com/2014/02/11/global-unionism-the-occupationa…>** <http://newunionism.wordpress.com/2014/02/11/global-unionism-the-occupationa…>* *A new strategic alliance? *[image: Fair Work Union Made]"Fair Trade" has been quietly changing the face of retail. In fact, sales have been increasing by almost 30% per year. So what about *Fair Work*? Strangely enough, such a label does not exist. Yet an alliance of consumers and producers could offer huge benefits to both. A recent article by *Conor Cradden* proposes the creation of a new international sustainability standard: "Fair Work, Union Made". Such a label would certify that *"wages and working conditions are set through ongoing processes of good faith collective bargaining"*. While such a standard would not substitute for collective and individual labour law, says Cradden, it would be an effective means of promoting collective industrial relations. You can find out more about the idea here: *http://goo.gl/hEDmOg <http://goo.gl/hEDmOg>*. And if you are interested in being part of a small team to take the idea further, contact *communications(a)newunionism.net <communications(a)newunionism.net>*. *Development-led economics *[image: invisible hands]Is export-led development the only way to a brighter future for poor countries? Or is it just a convenient way for a small group of people in these countries (and their counterparts in the global north) to make a lot of money? An alternative strategy - focusing on expanding domestic demand - has been shown to produce more in the way of social and economic benefits. However, development-led economics is a strategy that is being kept off the agenda. Could this be because it requires involving workers in decisions about pay and conditions? We take a serious look at this question with the help of a critical and widely-overlooked UNCTAD paper *here <http://newunionism.wordpress.com/2013/12/03/collective-industrial-relations…>*. *Reasons to be cheerful *[image: ILO]Employers’ representatives at the ILO have recently started worrying that freedom of association and collective bargaining rights might mean more than offering workers a seat at the table and then proceeding to ignore them. They seem to have finally realised that the *point* of freedom of association is to allow workers to challenge unilateral managerial control over business costs and organization. For the last couple of years they've battled to ensure this right means as little as possible in practice. However, a new report from the ILO’s independent legal advisory body - the Committee of Experts - suggests the battle is not going their way. It seems that ILO workers' representatives have employers on the back foot over the thorny issue of the right to strike. *More» <http://newunionism.wordpress.com/2014/03/17/ilo-workers-representatives-cal…>* *Reframing trade: Unions vs GATS *[image: Reframing]Network member *Mike Waghorne* has written in to recommend Donna McGuire's recent book: "Re-framing Trade: union mobilisation against the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS)". The book is derived from McGuire's thesis, in which she looked at the work of two of the biggest global union federations: Public Services International (PSI) and Education International (EI). She includes extensive case studies on union campaigns in Australia and South Africa. Not only does McGuire look at the successes achieved, she also looks at various campaign failures -- something not often found in work on union campaigns! *More» <http://newunionism.wordpress.com/2013/11/28/re-framing-trade-union-mobilisa…>* *Looking for TWELVE volunteers *[image: Looking within]There are about 1,000 of us in the New Unionism Network. Among us, can we find TWELVE people who would be willing to spend a month each as Guest Editor? We need your ideas, your energies, your perspectives and your networks. Fwd: URI's , QR codes, Western Philosophy, and "Artifactualization"

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Apr 1, 2014 at 8:16 PM Subject: URI's , QR codes, Western Philosophy, and "Artifactualization" To: "econowmix(a)googlegroups.com" <econowmix(a)googlegroups.com>, " op-n-m(a)googlegroups.com" <op-n-m(a)googlegroups.com> Excerpts : http://www.ppls.ed.ac.uk/ppig/documents/Philosophy%20of%20the%20Web%20as%20… *What the Web does to philosophy is what we call "artifactualization". A process where * *concepts become "embodied" in materiality* - with lasting consequences for this discipline. What happens when logical proper names take the form of URIs or when entities become resources with the mediation of the Web? The paradox is that while for the first time some philosophical concepts now exist in a concrete, material form, at the same time, this process tends to lend them some radically new characteristics, largely transforming them into something else. Heidegger posited a filiation between technology [Technik] and metaphysics (considered as the essence of modern technology). This takes a whole new sense now that technology realizes the Western metaphysical project by inscribing its categories directly into concrete matter. https://www.academia.edu/1788972/The_Artifactualization_of_Reference_and_Su… URIs are especially interesting for philosophers. Likeproper names, a concept central both to the philosophy oflanguage and metaphysics, they seem to refer to an object. Ifthe architecture of the Web retains some of their characteristics, then philosophers are no longer facing a terra incognita butrather a familiar landscape. Unlike proper names, however,URIs also give access to Web contents. As such, they betokenan important change, from a symbolical dimension, whereproper names are bestowed certain functions and used to solvephilosophical conundrums regarding identity, to a technologicalone, to quote the late German media theorist Friedrich Kittler, where they earn new functionalities and act as the pillar of a world-wide information system. 2 This shift is what we call artifactualization , 3 the becoming-artifact of philosophical concepts -- *Please note an intrusion wiped out my inbox on February 8; I have no record of previous communication, proposals, etc ..* P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
