Google / Motorola backed modular ( open ? ) phone hardware http://www.projectara.com/mdk/ https://plus.google.com/+GoogleATAP/posts/FmJ9Qb7Cqsw Announcing the Project Ara MDK v0.10 Today we're announcing the first release of the Project Ara Module Developers Kit (MDK) v0.10. You can download the release at projectara.com/mdk/. This is a very early version but our goals are to give the developer community an opportunity to provide feedback and input, and to help us ensure that the final MDK--anticipated at the end of 2014--is elegant, flexible, and complete. Next week, we're hosting the first Project Ara Developers Conference at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. We invite developers to attend in person (projectara.com/ara-developers-conference/) and provide feedback and input on the MDK. An online livestream option is also available. Registration closes tomorrow. Also, we're kicking off the Project Ara Module Developers forum and mailing list--check it out. We look forward to your feedback! On literature review and bibliograohic sources We already have a departing literature review we did among the partners to inform the research being developed when preparing the project application. See section B 1.2 Progress beyond the state of the art of the DoW ( https://drive.google.com/?tab=mo&authuser=0#folders/0B5YIAcu9WmaIcUE5QWpFUk…) It would be useful that those which did not participate in elaborating it - particularly Karthick that is very interested on literature - to read it and provide also a review of other literature that might be good to consider. In this line, Ignasi provided a doc with relevant literature references on peer production; surveys in FLOSS; and value in management: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y3rTjdR1e3Z7FmN6e34Xjhpz3DTB9xUETHeNnTN… Then, there is also the literature review on value done by Marco for argumenting the dimensions of value considered (See section on 2. Dimensions of value at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1g32DWkpVj-k7Dc1N3ByAmOSCVubrCEWNJ8_TaSE… ) Finally, the planning to share and cross references from each task: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ezn5YEv-tQRWQS7Sm2UY5aiHyHHOmE8DCY9sFE8… Cheers! Nigel Begin forwarded message: *From: *"l.rubinstein(a)uva.nl" <l.rubinstein(a)uva.nl> *Subject: **[Website feedback] MOOR: massive online open research* *Date: *28 March 2014 10:38:18 GMT *To: *"admin(a)p2pvalue.eu" <admin(a)p2pvalue.eu> Liza Rubinstein (l.rubinstein(a)uva.nl) sent a message using the contact form at http://www.p2pvalue.eu/contact. Dear P2P Value, We are emailing you to inform you of a project the University of Amsterdam is working on. Also, we would like to ask you if you know of similar projects or of parties that might be interested to learn more about our activities. MOOR (massive online open research) is a project which seeks to create software so that qualitative research can be performed open, online and collaboratively. Specifically, we are looking for ways to discuss and draw conclusions about data materials (such as text and imagery) collaboratively. The goals of the project are to work with large sets of data which are already available but cannot be processed with small research teams, to generate a broader perspective on this data by engaging a diverse set of people and to create a platform where people can learn about and contribute to this lesser known field of scientific research. As far as we know, there is no common based peer production software that allows to both discuss the content of primary documents ánd create overview/insight into the discussion. But we are curious to hear what you know of. As I think this description might be quite abstract let me give you an example of a project we would like to be able to perform: What does it mean when we talk about 'political trust'? This is a topic widely discussed in the Netherlands, but the way it is measured is quite poorly developed. The Netherlands Institute of Social Research has a dataset (text) available of people explaining what they mean by political trust. At the moment it is impossible to study all of this material: we do not have the human capacity and computer automated text analysis has not been developed sufficiently to do this task. What we envision is a common based peer production platform where everyone can stroll through the data and annotate or tag this data based on specific instructions. Simultaneously, people can choose to look through the tagged material and start to formulate conclusions of the different ways people think about political trust which will then be open for the other users to see and to discuss. Together, it might be possible to start understanding, collaboratively, what is meant by the term political trust. We hope to hear from you, kind regards, On behalf of the MOOR development team, Liza Rubinstein ________________________________________________________________ Professor Nigel Gilbert, ScD, FREng, AcSS, Professor of Sociology, University of Surrey, Guildford GU2 7XH, UK. +44 (0)1483 689173 -- *Please note an intrusion wiped out my inbox on February 8; I have no record of previous communication, proposals, etc ..* P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: [fcf_discussion] Data Retention: EU Court of Justice Denounces Mandatory Data Retention

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Tue, Apr 8, 2014 at 10:52 AM Subject: [fcf_discussion] Data Retention: EU Court of Justice Denounces Mandatory Data Retention To: fcforum_discussion(a)list.fcforum.net Themes: COURT OF JUSTICE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION, DATA RETENTION, PRIVACY, SURVEILLANCE La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/data-retention-eu-court-of-justice-denounce… Data Retention: EU Court of Justice Denounces Mandatory Data Retention *** Paris, 8 April 2014 -- In a judgement [1] issued this morning, the Court of Justice of the European Union opposed itself to the bulk data retention of our online communications by ruling the 2006 European Data Retention Directive [2] invalid. In the midst of the ongoing debate on mass surveillance, this legal decision represents an important step towards regaining our fundamental right to respect for private life and to the protection of personal data. *** Since its adoption in 2006, the Data Retention Directive was heavily criticised by civil society organisations, Members of the European Parliament [3], European institutions [4] and the constitutional courts of several member states [5]. One of the most controversial sections in the Directive is the obligation on telcom operators and Internet access providers to ensure that their subscribers' data "are retained for periods of not less than six months and not more than two years from the date of the communication" in order "to ensure that those data are available for the purpose of the investigation, detection and prosecution of serious crime". These measures were so heavily criticised not least because effective alternative measures of data preservation, that are targeted and thus much more proportional, were already in place in dozens of countries. These measures call on technical intermediaries to preserve specific data and communicate technical data in their possession to authorities within the framework of an investigation [6]. The decision came in response to cases brought by the High Court of Ireland and the Austrian Verfassungsgerichtshof (constitutional court) requesting the Court of the European Union to examine the validity of the Data Retention Directive. In a press release [7], the Court stated today that in its opinion, "the directive interferes in a particularly serious manner with the fundamental rights to respect for private life and to the protection of personal data". This ruling has an erga omnes effect which means that the decision does not just rule on the cases of Ireland and Austria, but extends to all European countries thus obliging some member states to reform their national legislation in order to ensure that it complies with today's ruling. In France, this decision will directly affect the measures of data retention imposed on telecom operators [8] (specifically those measures contained in the "loi de programmation militaire") and those on hosting services [9]. "This landmark decision is a victory for all defenders of privacy who have been fighting mandatory data retention across Europe since 2006 against the bulk retention of communications. Following a year of intense debate on mass surveillance, the EU Court of Justice makes clear that laws adopted in the name of the war on terror have led to unacceptable violations of privacy. This ruling is an invitation for everyone to continue the fight against surveillance by all appropriate means, be they technical, political or legal. One legislative step at a time, our governments had drifted away from the rule of law and now is the time to remind them that fundamental rights are the cornerstones of our democracies and non-negotiable" concluded Félix Tréguer, co-founder of La Quadrature du Net. * References * 1. https://laquadrature.net/files/20140408_CJUE_Data%20retention_EN.pdf 2. http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/ALL/;jsessionid=2SfnTDLRf8JCyGn6Y… 3. The constitutional courts of Romania (2009), Germany (2010), Bulgaria (2010), Cyprus (2011) and the Czech Republic (2011) ruled the national transpositions of the Directive unconstitutional finding that the invasion of citizens' private life was unproportional. The New York Times cracked open a window for a change and let a little truth into their pages when they published an editorial by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, titled *Venezuela: A Call for Peace*<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=Y%2FzusK%2FAJHT0TI4pQZpn0Dx7b…>. However, since then they have refused to print *any *favorable letters in solidarity with the country's elected government. Rather, they have been printing attacks by such writers as House Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce, Senator Marco Rubio and Julio Borges of the US funded opposition group Primero Justicia. We need to flood the New York Times, both to get our letters published and, if that fails, to illustrate their bias.
