new eu research consortium on p2p research methodologies
by Michel Bauwens 21 Jan '14

who is interested to participate, as member of the p2p-f network, to the following potential EU grant: Kevin, thanks for spreading this via the p2p value mailing list: Project initiative on ‘Responsible Research and Innovation’ Request to express your interest as a potential consortium partner The Work Programme 2014-2015 of the European Commission contains some calls for the promotion of ‘responsible research and innovation’. See ‘ISSI.5.2014_2015 – Supporting structural change in research organisations to promote Responsible Research and Innovation’ and GARRI.1.2014 – Fostering RRI uptake in current research and innovation systems’ at http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/wp/2014_2015/main/…. I agree with Leif Thomas Olsen (see http://p2pfoundation.net/The_R2R_Research_Process_Protocol_Project) that, in order to define and perform responsible research and innovation, we need a new collaborative, commons-driven, research model. I would add to this process-like approach, that we also need a different substantial approach, i.e. we need to realise ‘glocal sustainability research’. Glocal sustainability research a) takes ‘strong sustainability’ as its normative starting point and takes this normative ambition as a standard against which to evaluate its performance, b) is transdisciplinary in nature, because it has to deal with the complexity of real life situations—emerging of an interplay between both global and local causes and reasons—and because it has to respond to the normative aspirations of a diversity of local and global, actual and future stakeholders, and c) is interactive or participatory action research because the results of common theoretical and practical actions cannot be forecasted and, hence, need ongoing monitoring and adjustment. The implementation of Responsible Research and Innovation in current research organisations and research and innovation systems asks for several structural transformations, e.g. regarding the definition of intellectual property regimes (i.e. the way diverse contributions to glocal sustainability research are remunerated and valorised), regarding the processes guiding the definition and performance of research agenda’s, -projects, and –teams, and regarding funding mechanisms for research. In my view, the calls on Responsible Research and Innovation offer an opportunity to further clarify, substantiate, and experiment with both the procedural and substantial challenges to implement responsible research and innovation both at the level of research organisations and of research and innovation systems. Therefore, my request to express your interest to contribute to this research initiative and to indicate the procedural or substantial kind of contribution you would like to provide.Project initiative on ‘Responsible Research and Innovation’ Request to express your interest as a potential consortium partner The Work Programme 2014-2015 of the European Commission contains some calls for the promotion of ‘responsible research and innovation’. Web Filters Blocking P2PFoundation.net
by Kevin Flanagan 21 Jan '14

21 Jan '14

Dear Friends, I was travelling home from Dublin to Galway by bus at the beginning of January and using the on board wifi when I discovered that our domain p2pfoundation.net was blocked. I emailed the tech support of the company who manage the wifi. They explained that we were categorised 'P2P' as in filesharing. I explained that this is not the case and within a week I received a response telling me that we have been unblocked and surely enough as I travelled on that bus today I was able to access P2PFoundation.net. Concerned that the site might be blocked on other services I asked the tech support to investigate. In the meantime I did my own investigation. The product used for the wifi service is called moovmanage by a company called http://www.icomera.com It turns out this company has clients all over Europe. Does this mean that P2PFoundation.net is blocked in other countries? Well I made a guess that Icomera get their blocklists from a thrid party. I looked into who might be offering such services and discovered OpenDNS. A quick search suggested the two companies were partners. I lodged a ticket with OpenDNS and just got a response confirming that P2PFoundation.net had been tagged ' P2P/File sharing' and that upon investigation they decided to remove us from this category and in turn all the services that use OpenDns categories to block content. http://domain.opendns.com/p2pfoundation.net Success :) Friends if you find our site blocked on public or private networks please take time to investigate and let us know. Also if you have any concerns about your own site being blocked it is easy to search with OpenDns and they were very helpful in correcting the situation. http://community.opendns.com/domaintagging/ If you know of other companies like OpenDNS that we should be checking do let us know. Best Kevin

Several libraries, at least in the US, using filters, block p2p-f for the same reason; I tried to change it in one case, but was unsuccessfull, the librarian didn't want to 'get' it Michel -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Dear Vasilis, thank you so much for publishing this greek newsitem on the p2p blog! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Silke Helfrich <silke.helfrich(a)gmx.de> Date: Tue, Jan 21, 2014 at 3:56 AM Subject: [Commoning] Fwd: A documentary in production about water struggles in Greece: Wa(te)rdrops To: commoning <commoning(a)lists.wissensallmende.de> -------- Original-Nachricht -------- Betreff: A documentary in production about water struggles in Greece: Wa(te)rdrops Datum: Sat, 18 Jan 2014 19:26:42 +0200 Von: Theodoros Karyotis <tkaryotis(a)gmail.com> An: undisclosed-recipients:; Dear friends, I would like to bring to your attention a great new documentary that is currently in production, documenting the water struggles around Greece. It is being filmed by a group of militant filmmakers coordinated by researcher Nelly Psarou. The same people did "Golfland?" a few years ago, a doc about the disastrous effect of golf course development on the environment and local communities. You can watch "Golfland?" online here: http://www.golfland.gr/en/golfland_movie.php *The working title of the new documentary is "Wa(te)rdrops", and it aims to present, through in-depth research and fieldwork, struggles concerning water around Greece, including the struggle against the privatization of Thessaloniki's water company (EYATH), against the gold mines in Chalkidiki and against local water reserve appropriation efforts in Volos and Crete.* You can see the visually appealling first few trailers in the documentary's web page, http://www.stagonesdoc.gr/en Thessaloniki: (http://stagonesdoc.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u= e70248f3209447b002b408bcf&id=2d5b4f8aa7&e=ebbc4c0854) Volos: (http://stagonesdoc.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u= e70248f3209447b002b408bcf&id=cd979dc02e&e=ebbc4c0854) Make sure you activate the subtitles (English or Spanish) on the top right corner of the player. It is a_proudly independent production_ relying on crowdfunding for its completion, and the outcome will be freely accessible under a creative commons license. *If you have the possibility, I suggest you contribute using the "Donate" button on the bottom of the documentary's webpage. Circulate to anyone that might be interested!* Thanks for your attention! I wish you a creative and militant 2014!
