Announcement of Camp Pixelache 2014: The Commons, Vartiosaari, eastern Helsinki, 6-8th June
by andrew paterson 28 Jan '14

28 Jan '14

[plain text version] Pixelache Helsinki 2014 will be an international 2-day trans-disciplinary event focusing on the theme of "The Commons", including bio-, urban culture and knowledge commons topics. Adding a new island to its logbook after Suomenlinna (2011) and Naissaar (2013), Camp Pixelache will take up residence in Vartiosaari, a nature island surrounded by eastern suburbs of Helsinki, during 6-8th June 2014. http://pixelache.ac/camp-2014 Camp Pixelache Based on previous Camp Pixelache experiments, the event is designed around two main unconference days. Except for keynote lectures planned in advance, typically at unconferences the agenda will be shaped and confirmed by the attendees at the beginning of the event. Anyone who wants to initiate a discussion on a commons-related topic can claim a time and a space. The event is free of charge. Several events will be organized around the main Camp Pixelache days, including a programme of participatory workshops. Background According to Michel Bauwens, "the Commons consist of any common resource that is available to all, and as such there are many type of Commons but basically two: physical resources or man-made. The Commons is also a series of specific institutional formats used to manage such common resources." On the local Commons.fi web-presence, the following examples of Commons are also given: Shared natural resources, free software, open data, p2p networks, co-operatives, co-cultures, talkoots, street art, as well as many other commonly-known past, present and future manifestations." Pixelache already has a long history of engaging with collaborative digital media and particularly with knowledge-sharing and Free/Libre Open Source culture. Early in Pixelache Helsinki's development, a social science paper by Katri Halonen, correctly identified the strong co-relations between open-source ideology, and the influencing thematic and organizational structure of the festival. Pixelache Festival 2014 engages further in Commons issues, specifically from the angle of educational and cultural production strategies and sustainability. As a trans-disciplinary cultural festival, we believe in the necessity to develop trans-disciplinary capacities to tackle together issues of the Commons, such as environmental protection and sustainable nature-resource utilization/management, as well as resisting privatizing forces on all aspects of life. Vartiosaari Camp Pixelache's main venue Vartiosaari demonstrates many aspects of the Commons as an undeveloped nature and recreation island in the middle of suburban city sprawl, which hosts numerous social and association-run wooden summer-villa retreats and special features. The island is currently under-threat of full-scale residential development by Helsinki City Planning Department, and there is a grassroots campaign to protect it's particular qualities, in which artists & cultural practitioners are involved. We are hoping that the occasion of Camp Pixelache can also provide a discussion forum around Helsinki-Commons issues. http://kaupunginosat.net/vartiosaari Suggestions of sub-themes / Seeded contributions * Open-Sourcing Festivals (in the context of EU-Grundtvig 'Open Learning Steps & Open-sourcing Festivals' project). How does an organization open-source their cultural festival? Can we share the process for organizing a festival, so that other groups can use it themselves? How do organizations support activities and events throughout the year? Can we share the process for sustaining ongoing programs, so that other groups can do this too? These are the questions that five experimental art, design and technology organizations from the Pixelache Network are asking themselves and others, and exploring, through a mobile circuit of workshops and seminars organized across Europe during 2013-2015. Open Source and Free/Libre culture, spreading from software and hardware, to urban space and organizational issues, unites the partners. http://www.pixelache.ac/blog/2014/open-sourcing-festivals/ * The Bio-Commons in collaboration with Finnish Society of Bioart The topic of Camp Pixelache 2014 are the commons in general, the cultural and natural resources accessible to all members of a society, including natural materials such as air, water, and a habitable earth. Biotechnological developments show that some of the biological commons are endangered by rigorous attempts of patenting natural biological resources for their utilization in biotechnology. The biohacking scene as well as the DIY Biology movement is working in keeping biology and biotechnology in the commons. The Finnish Society of Bioart will organize a biohacker and DIY Biology sub-theme related to the commons for Camp Pixelache 2014. http://bioartsociety.fi/ * Helsinki-Commons as a continuation of the collaboration with Aalto co-p2p SIG, Open cities working group (Open Knowledge Foundation Finland) and Pixelache. Going from mapping towards the ways (methods) that Commons can be made.. A 'Designing the Commons' how-to resource could be developed (what works, why, a la Elinor Ostrom's '8 Principles for Managing a Commmons'), or at least initiated during the Camp Pixelache days. http://co-p2p.mlog.taik.fi/ Get Involved! If you would like to get involved, please contact office [-at-] pixelache.ac We will make an open call for participation in February.

Fwd: SHIFT Magazine - Issue 1

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Daryl Taylor <taylor.daryl.r(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Jan 27, 2014 at 7:40 PM Subject: Fwd: SHIFT Magazine - Issue 1 To: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> SHIFT Magazine - Issue 1 http://www.sustainabilitysc.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/SHIFT-MAG-I1-sma… SHIFT magazine launched in January 2014, and is available every second month thereafter. [image: pull-up banner - shift, outlined]<http://www.sustainabilitysc.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/pull-up-banner-s…>The Story of SHIFT SHIFT magazine is a project of Sustainability Showcase, an Australia-based registered charity whose aim is to help society prepare for the converging crises of ecological and economic decline, and post-peak resources. The SHIFT team is a coalition of volunteers who share a passion for free and honest public discourse, and the need for media that addresses society’s issues of greatest concern. Disappointed by the misdirected attention of the mainstream media, and much of the alternative media, the team decided to embark on a mission to sow some seeds for a more honest, engaging and empowering discourse. As Global Citizens it’s about time we stopped whinging about the meager offerings of the mainstream media, and reclaimed the public discourse for ourselves. SHIFT encourages readers to submit their own contributions and participate actively in determining a new cultural discourse. SHIFT magazine is produced by an all-volunteer team, and all contributors to SHIFT do so on a voluntary donor basis. SHIFT is resolutely non-commercial, so contains no advertising – only the stuff our readers want to read. SHIFT can be enjoyed in various formats to suit various needs, from hard copies delivered to your door to minimal ecological footprint e-readers, to browsing online. Where is SHIFT taking us? Speaking honestly and compassionately about the converging crises of ecological and economic collapse and peak resources, SHIFT aims to deliver not just food for thought, but inspiration to practical action. This no-holds-barred magazine minces no words in portraying our planetary predicament for what it is, and engages some of the sharpest minds and open hearts of the sustainability movement in communicating the stories we need to hear. From growthbusting Dave Gardner, to arch-collapsik Guy McPherson, to psychological resilience educator Carolyn Baker, SHIFT covers all areas of a culture in decline. SHIFT aims to inspire practical action among readers – action to preserve our vital ecosystems, action to build community resilience, and action to powerdown our way of life for a pathway to sustainability. On this journey, we are in good company. SHIFT is everything the name suggests – from paradigm shift, through downshifting, to just shifting your bum off the couch – it’s all about the shift. How SHIFT Works Our core production team consists of editing team Kari McGregor and Sean Crawley, and web-development, graphic design and publishing duo Ben Matei and David Zwolski. Thought-provoking content is sourced from both regular contributors and guest writers. Every issue of SHIFT will be released online with a selection of articles available for free viewing. SHIFT can be enjoyed in various formats via subscription or single issue purchase, and back-issues are easily accessible for browsing or purchase. Please note that the magazine is sold at cost of production and delivery only, with any marginal surplus being used to pay for website hosting. With no advertising revenue to subsidise our work the cost is fully borne by the purchaser. This means that the *SHIFT *team can proudly say we include only the content our readers wish to receive, and do not fill our pages with wasteful commercial advertising. question about corporate crowdfunding

can anyone respond to this: 3) Are you aware of any peer production type projects focused on social development in which either a private corporation has actively participated or it can participate and engage in a mutually beneficial relation with the stakeholders? -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

commons / market / currency questions by Mike Riddell
by Michel Bauwens 27 Jan '14

27 Jan '14

questions from Mike Riddell and a very first reply by me MIKE RIDDELL Michel – as you know, with colleagues I am developing a software platform that I hope in the end will help protect and defend the commons. So in the context of good OS design theory where i know you are hard to beat, i have some questions the answers of which will me improve what I’m working on. By the way, if what I’m doing is a mad idea it’s a mad idea that’s funded which is important in the sense that it’s an idea whose time has come. My questions: 1. “A commons isn’t just a marketplace”. What other key functional components would you expect? A currency? An accounting system? A payments mechanism? A social network? 2. “Contribution to the common pool”. You say an institution should be created to protect the value. I think that ‘value’ is personal information (and that this personal information is the new commons). Imagine if this information were stored “all in one place” and kept under lock and key by this institution acting on behalf of the community so that business and govt couldn’t get their hands on it without first paying for it, what constitution would this institution need to have in order to satisfy your requirements? Would a co-op model work? 3. “market exchange excludes people without market power”. Imagine for a moment that the system was designed to reward inclusiveness, so in other words the more users that were connected, sharing and trading the more valuable the system (and thus the community) became, and the healthier, wealthier and happier it’s users/inhabitants became. And if the only way to bring about such a utopian dream were via the markets, would that turn you against such a system? (You’ve got to remember here, I’m from Manchester – the home of Free Trade!!!) 4. “Bitcoin doesn’t solve any social problems”. Imagine if in your community, people agreed the terms upon which they would give each other credit and the terms of issuance were something along the lines of “you only get credit from us the community for activities that contribute to the common good”. Imagine if a network of connected community hubs had an unlimited supply of such credits, and were able to issue them to members of the community in exchange for a measured contribution to the common good. Imagine then that such credits could be stored somewhere safely before being exchanged in the community’s marketplace, then wouldn’t this flow of credit – this current – represent the community’s currency? And imagine that because this currency was very sustainable, very purposeful and very inclusive, that because of its ability to make the community a better place, demand to join the community increased and so its stock began to rise. Then because the stock was rising, speculators from New York City started buying the stock off individuals that were willing to exchange it for $$$$US. Wouldn’t it then be the case that the inflow of $US would increase demand for the community credit, thus producing demand for contribution to the community’s common good? And wouldn’t the suited and booted pin-striped swindlers be happy with the fact that (a) they’ve made a good $financial return for the time they’ve held the stock (b) demonstrated (because the credits are a unit of account) to their own stock-holders that rather than being sleazy speculators in it for a quick buck, they are in fact sustainable, purposeful, inclusive long-term investors that produce a social dividend that can be measured, and (c) the currency is an asset class all of its own – a ‘safe-haven’ that’s better than Switzerland becuase the community currency isn’t prone to inflation (it’s only ever earned into existence for contribution to the common good) nor deflation (the supply of the currency is only limited by the community’s willingness to earn more of it). So if you’ve imagined all that – have you not just imagined a social stock exchange where individuals can sell their credit to investors for real world $cash? In other words – A Bitcoin for Good? Sorry if this is a bit long but i do appreciate your perspective on such issues and promise not to waste your time! Thanks, Mike. MICHEL BAUWENS response dear Mike, I reposted your questions for the broader community to reply to, on February 3. In the meantime, I start responding to the first question, and feel free to prompt me to continue the conversation. You ask: "1. “A commons isn’t just a marketplace”. What other key functional components would you expect? A currency? An accounting system? A payments mechanism? A social network?" But that is to my mind a wrong quesiton. A commons is NOT a marketplace. A commons is either a local scarce resource that doesn't want to be a market, managed by the community a la Ostrom; or a abundant digital resource which by definition does not need and can't have market dynamics. But a commons, a core abundant resources, can be linked to a market. For example, the Linux code commons can be linked to a market for services that build scarce value on top of the abundant commons. That marketplace may be a capitalist market (IBM, Red Hat), or could be a fair and ethical marketplace that is more structurally linked to the market.
