---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Orsan Senalp <orsan1234(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 8:58 PM Subject: [Networkedlabour] Another text from Peter To: networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org Just discovered another, older, highly relevant and living text from Peter, on emerging forms of new labor (self)organising. What I thought as 'social network unionism' is being masterfully decribed in the text. I reposted here and gave link to Global Solidairty Dialogue site, where I found it: http://snuproject.wordpress.com/2013/08/12/the-new-social-unionism-a-new-un… Emergence of p2p onilne networks and rapid scaling up p2p as dynamic of social relationships and cumminication within newest social justice movements / networks makes the text very relevant. The latesr events happenings and developments I argue moves the term Peter coined 'new social movement unionism' towards term I like better 'social networks unionism'. Enjoy reading, and would be looking forward your reactions. in global solidairty, orsan _______________________________________________ Networkedlabour mailing list Networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Thanks Sol, and sorry for late reply. Yes indeed ther are many spaces of solidairty have built and they are growing, All these spaces, ties, links ad nodes the ideas and aprroaches they put forward in order to alter the world radically and build new ones which are just, inspiring, based on eqality, sharing, caring and solidairty are valuable. And also we need to connecte and contribute to converge them. That would be great if you can make it on the 222nd and invite others from your networks. in golbal solidairty, orsan On 6 August 2013 17:30, Sol Trumbo Vila <soltrumbovila(a)tni.org> wrote: > Thank you Orsam for the update. > > There are indeed many initiatives going on worldwide, with huge potential to > converge. > > The actions for 15O look promising, there is need for new and innovative > forms of actions where the broad public can engage. > > I also wonder what are the specific political demands we aim to achieve, we > have not had deep discussions in this regard. Fwd: [Networkedlabour] Another world is possible, yes, of course, but why build it?
by Michel Bauwens 11 Aug '13

11 Aug '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jakob Rigi <rigij(a)ceu.hu> Date: Sun, Aug 11, 2013 at 11:38 PM Subject: Re: [Networkedlabour] Another world is possible, yes, of course, but why build it? To: eulab(a)hyperlinker.com, networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org A very interesting reflection. As matter of fact "Another World is Possible: is very vague slogan and has different meanings for different activists. For Susan George and all Statist reformists it means the revival of the welfare state of the post-war period. Their enemy is the neoliberal capitalism not capitalism in general. They want capitalism plus the post-war social contract between labor and capital mediated by the state. Against this reformist camp we have revolutionary trends who mean by another world a world free from capital. I myself belong to this second camp. We, the revolutionary camp suffer from lacking a vision on how this alternative world look like. Revolutionary Leninists, Maosts, and Trotskists have the old model of transitory period of dictatorship of proletariat leading to a stateless society. On the other hand we have many anarchist groups who have the practice of prefiguration, beautifully described in Marianne`s Michelbergs book the Will of Many. This practice which is ultimately reformist claim if we organize our political actions demcratically and horizontally, this will lead to an alternative society. I think we should combine good elements of these two revolutionary trend. Peer production prefigures the alternative to capitalism. Another world is the world of peer producer. Here, production is considered in the broadest sense. It is not only the production of goods and services but also of culture, meaning, life and social relation. But, we cannot establish a fully fledged peer to peer producing society without transforming strategic resources, i.e. the earth , the air, knowledge, and major technical infrastructure into commons that are available to the whole humanity. This is not possible without a social revolution that takes away these strategic resources from capitalists. So Anther world is possible if: We expropriate capitalists through a social revolution, and replace it by peer production, not in hundred years, but here and now. Now, western activists avoid the question of revolution and the overthrow of capitalism, therefore the slogan Another World is Possible has become a cliche. bets Jakob >>> "Laboratorio Eudemonia" <eulab(a)hyperlinker.com> 08/11/13 4:18 PM >>> ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE! ----------------------------------- yes, of course, but why build it? For decades we hear people invoking something OTHER than the existing. First hoards of new parties alternated themselves, clearly without a progress. When the repulsion for parties became too strong, the political associations arrived to be electoral collectors. When also the disgust for the associations overflowed, came forward the social forums. What changed? Absolutely nothing. The same inspiring saying: "another world is possible" showed immediately the possibility, even the ease, of the change, but also their firm decision to leave the world as it is. The only thing that has always been pursued is a different DIVISION of the existing, not a real CHANGE of it. In that paradoxical way in which life expresses itself, when we meet guys who boast of being something, we can be sure that they are the exact opposite. Also in this case, who feels a strong desire for a world different from this, and wish approach who seems a friend and companion in this adventure, would discover that even the social forums are full of the usual STATE figures who quarrel with their antagonists PRIVATE to carve up the world. The ORIGINAL HUMAN BEING, not compromised by a conflict of interest, rather properly disgusted at the idea of an ECONOMIC STATUS that reduces him to a human subspecies, of a job that imprisons him for all his life preventing him from living a rich and varied reality, fed up of the eternal contrasts between the OWNERS of the STATE and the OWNERS of the PRIVATE, determined to build a world in which the STATE be shared among citizens and in which the PRIVATE cannot overdo thanks to a DEMOCRATIC STATE, it is yet to be discovered and developed. Yet only this NATURAL HUMAN BEING, able to maintain a detached inner core, his own objectivity avulsed from the FORCES of the lobbies of the STATE and of the PRIVATE, only who will have the courage to not make common cause and clique with others, who will not impose a group's will, who instead will lead a solitary political research, who will prioritize the POWER of TRUTH to the force of a majority addicted to any lie and omission, will enjoy the hope of making that world RIGHT, HONEST, TRUTHFUL capable of being EQUAL and FAIR. Whoever you are, let this be known. ANOTHER WORLD can not remain equal to this. ANOTHER WORLD can born only by informing the Earth's peoples that, once occurred the democracies, the primary collective resources of the public roles should have started to be all participated by TEMPORARY assignments. The hoarders that inherited them from previous regimes have instead taken advantage of the positions of power to keep the undue privileges of the tyrannical era. ANOTHER WORLD will be build only when the Public Jobs of the various Countries will be assigned at FIXED TIME in order to create that OPERATING DEMOCRACY able to allow to citizens to re-organize and conduct the public activities and services in the way they believe, day after day, more appropriate. In order to transform the present ROYAL PALACES of the PUBLIC CAREERISTS in a strong, fair and inclusive, basic economy. Who are they? Yesterday Dave gave us an overview of the ITUC, the WFTU, the Global Union Federations and the ETUC. There are also other international, regional and sub-regional organizations lurking in the underbrush, but for now let us mention just one very important development:* * * *Recent efforts to organize informal workers have created new international organizations, principally StreetNet, representing street and market vendors, and the International Domestic Workers' Network (IDWN). Both work with GUFs: StreetNet with UNI and the IDWN with the IUF. Home based workers have organized at regional level in South-East Europe and in Asia.* * * *From this quick overview, the political challenge becomes obvious. We are dealing with a highly fragmented movement.* * * *What all these organisations have in common, is that they are workers' organisations. You would expect that they would have largely common policies, reflecting a common class interest. Why is this not the case?* * * *This may be the most important question we have to face because the onslaught of capital is world-wide and unified, and that requires a much greater practical unity in action than we have today.* * * *I believe that our main problem is not so much the fragmentation among different organizations than the fragmentation of our political perception, of our understanding of society, of our interpretation of what is happening in society and therefore of what needs to be done. The organizational fragmentation is a consequence of the loss of a common understanding, not a cause.* * * *The reason is two-fold: one, and this is a paradox, is a consequence of our movement's own success. The international trade union movement is now truly world-wide and spans a far greater range of societies and cultures than at any previous time in its history, and consequently it is also exposed to and affected by a much greater diversity of cultures. * * * *The second reason is that at the same time, its leading organisations, mainly in the industrialised countries, have become largely de-politicised. This has been the outcome of a long process starting at the end of World War II, when a weakened trade union movement in Europe became increasingly dependent on the State and, in the context of capitalist reconstruction and the Cold War, retreated to what it believed to be its core business (collective bargaining), abandoning the goal of a socialist transformation of society and leaving society to the State.* * * *In that context, the merger between the ICFTU and the WCL in 2006 was acquired by erasing the last vestiges of social-democratic politics that had survived in the ICFTU. Not much has remained of what were at one time progressive elements of WCL ideology either, basically liberation theology. This was a merger based on the lowest political denominator, with the result that the ITUC today is adrift with no recognizable politics at all.* * * *This has deprived the workers of the world of a universal and common narrative about society: what it is, and how to change it – like for example the democratic socialist narrative which still existed in the pre-World War II movement, and which today survives only in some Global Union Federations, and of course in many unions at national level. * * * *The loss of a universal narrative that we share in common is a critical problem: it weakens international class consciousness and abandons political consciousness to widely different perceptions of society, shaped by local or regional realities.* * * *For example, the ETUC, which is politically and financially dependent on the European Union, is deliberately and sometimes aggressively eurocentric, and, even more than the ITUC, subscribes to an ideology of "social partnership" which has long since been discarded by the presumed "social partners".* * * *The Latin American unions, acutely sensitive to the dangers of American imperialism, have been far less aware or concerned about what happened to the workers for seventy years in the USSR and for forty years of Stalinism in the Eastern European countries under its domination.* * * *Much the same applies to the South African unions, with politics shaped by the anti-apartheid struggle. Their physical, intellectual and emotional remoteness from really existing Stalinism has enabled the WFTU to gain some undeserved credibility. "Socialism", by its Stalinist definition, seems an attractive option – at a safe distance in time and place. * * * *The unions in the former Soviet bloc, emerging from the wreckage of a society where all forms of independent labour organisation were suppressed for decades, have for the most part no ideology at all. Their main problem has been to repudiate the so-called "socialism" which, by its Stalinist definition, was the ideology of their rulers, the ideology of a police State. Some unions have embraced the neo-liberal ideology of their natural enemies. Some more radical elements have been attracted to revolutionary syndicalism, because its class struggle politics are less tainted with the vocabulary of their enemies.* * * *Not having experienced apartheid, they would be totally unable to understand how the political hegemony of the SACP over the South African labour movement came about – and what would make the WFTU appear as an attractive option to some South African trade unionists.* * * *Polish Solidarity, a movement of 10 million members at its peak in 1981, with a strong left-wing component, has since been hijacked by Catholic conservatives, endorsed neo-liberal policies, invited Margaret Thatcher to its congress and is down to less than 1m members.* * * *China, the largest nation on earth, has a trade union structure inherited from the Soviet model, The government has embraced capitalism, but has maintained a trade union structure designed to control the working class rather than represent it. While the ITUC and others are cosying up to it, workers throughout China are daily revolting against it, and against the system. Which side are we on? * * * *I could go on like this with many more examples.* * * *The present labour movement resembles far too much the blind men in the parable trying to find out what an elephant is like and coming up with incompatible answers.* * * *So our challenge is to reconstitute the full view of the elephant.* * * *How do we do this?* * * *The trade union movement, such as it is, is what we have, and that has to be our point of departure. Our task is to recover the politics which are naturally ours, the politics of our class, and reconstitute our identity as a movement of our class.* * * *We must recover a common understanding, recover our common narrative about our history and about society.* * * *All of us need to rise above and reach out beyond our own experience, which is of necessity only one part of reality, open up to the experience of others, always critically, but always with patience and respect, rebuilding the movement from below, always remembering that we are part of one world working class. We must become internationalists. * * * *Socialism remains our goal but, instructed by experience, we know that the meaning of socialism must be radical democracy: real power, democratically exercised, by real people, at every level, not by any substitutes, no vanguard parties, no so-called "progressive" authoritarians. We cannot delegate the fight for the emancipation of labour to anyone else.* * * *Finally, we must always keep in mind that we are part of society, and that our goals are no different from the general interest of society. We are not a "special interest group" as our enemies would have it, we are at one with society.* * * *Therefore we need to remain aware that there are many social movements not directly linked to labour, but sharing many of our objectives, who are or should be, our allies. Many have filled the void left by the labour movement when it retreated to business unionism and the administration of post-war capitalism, then known as the "social market economy". We need them as allies to build a the broad world-wide political coalition that will eventually liberate mankind from capitalism.* * * *I am thinking of organisations like the Clean Clothes Campaign, which has done more to support garment workers around the world than their own International ever could, or WIEGO, which has been instrumental in helping informal women workers getting organized, other women's movements, movements to defend the environment, human rights organisations, even political parties of the Left where they still support us.* * * *Comrades:* * * *This Summer School has a lot to do with meeting our political challenge. We have created a free space for discussion and action, and that free space is expanding – use it, and keep using it. We are creating an invisible International. We have no bureaucratic structures, we do not aspire to any sort of bureaucratic hegemony. We are a free network of autonomous and self-determined trade union activists, working together, and with others, with a common purpose: help rebuild the international movement that the workers of the world need and deserve.* * * -- - *EBook (co-editor), February 2013: World Social Forum: Critical Explorations http://www.into-ebooks.com/book/world_social_forum/ ** * - ***EBook, November 2012: Recovering Internationalism<http://www.into-ebooks.com/book/recovering_internationalism/>. *[Now *free *in two download formats]<http://www.into-ebooks.com/book/world_social_forum/> * <http://www.into-ebooks.com/book/world_social_forum/>* - *Interface Journal Special (co-editor), November 2012: **For the Global Emancipation of Labour <http://www.interfacejournal.net/current/>* - *Blog:** http://www.unionbook.org/profile/peterwaterman. * - *EBook 2011, Under, Against, Beyond (Compilation 1980s-90s) http://www.into-ebooks.com/book/under-against-beyond/* - *Paper 2012:** The 2nd Coming of the World Federation of Trade Unions <http://www.unionbook.org/profiles/blogs/peter-waterman-the-second-coming-of…> * - * <http://www.unionbook.org/profiles/blogs/peter-waterman-the-second-coming-of…>Paper 2012: Marikana, South Africa, The March of the Undead<http://www.unionbook.org/profiles/blogs/marikana-south-africa-elsewhere-the…> * - *Chapter, 2013. Greetings from Pyhäjoki, Northern Finland! Below is an event that currently goes on now which involves many commoning strategies and practices within the mix of art-activism-research related to environmental-energy issues within a small rural community and transnational energy-power context. Best regards, Andrew .. casepyhajoki.info * facebook.com/casepyhajoki * twitter #casepyhajoki Case Pyhäjoki – Artistic reflections on nuclear influence is a trans-disciplinary expedition and production workshop in Pyhäjoki, Northern Finland 1. - 11.8.2013. The sixth nuclear power plant of the country is planned to be build in Pyhäjoki. Participants of Case Pyhäjoki are for example artists, researchers and activists. The programme has consisted of lectures, meeting local people and expeditions of different kinds to get to know the area, nuclear power as phenomenon, and what the power plant means to people. It reaches from the local to national and global. What is artist's role in the changes in the area and wider? How can we develop methods of creative work in a complex and contested place of social tragedy and distress? How can we communicate this through to wider networks? As well as talking, thinking and research, there is also time for action. The participants have created different types of engagements, prototype events and experiments, reaching from a large 'thank you' sign for those who refuse to sell their land to the nuclear power company, to the design of a 'power sports day', a local fairytale, aswell as a mural painting with local youth, a special karaoke playlist, and a DIY geiger counter building workshop. The contributing presentations, workshops, expeditions and reflections are documented online at casepyhajoki.info and facebook.com/casepyhajoki See also links to the broadcasted lectures on the website. The final 'show & tell' day is on Sunday at 14.00 in the local Parhalahti School, close to the location of Hanhikivi, the actual site for the planned nuclear power plant. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Stefan Meretz <stefan(a)meretz.de> Date: Fri, Aug 9, 2013 at 4:53 AM Subject: [Commoning] Rosa Luxemburg Foundation gets active on the commons To: commoning <commoning(a)lists.wissensallmende.de> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 [Please spread] Dear all, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (from the German Left Party) is preparing some interesting meetings on the commons and around. First is an international workshop "Beyond Ostrom", 8.-11. November 2013 in Berlin: http://beyondostrom.blog.rosalux.de/ Second is a call for contributions (deadline 1st of december 2013) concerning the 100th Anniversary of Luxemburg's “The Accumulation of Capital: A Contribution to an Economic Explanation of Imperialism”. In this work she developed the figure of "land grabbing" (Landnahme) as a continuous precondition for capitalist surplus production, whereby "land grabbing" can be understood more generally as "enclosure of the commons". These texts will be used as the basis for an international workshop to be held on 7.- 9. March 2014, in Berlin.
