-- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: Silkroad how it was stopped, blocked article on facebook

- http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24371894 2 October 2013 Last updated at 21:31 GMT Share this pageEmailPrint 444 ShareFacebookTwitter Silk Road: How FBI closed in on suspect Ross Ulbricht By Dave Lee Technology reporter, BBC News FBI A lengthy investigation into internet communications lead the FBI to their suspect Continue reading the main story Related Stories FBI arrests Silk Road site suspect Dark web drug site hit by hacker US authorities believe that 29-year-old Ross William Ulbricht, arrested on Wednesday, is Dread Pirate Roberts (DPR) - the administrator of the notorious Silk Road online marketplace. It was an underground website where people from all over the world were able to buy drugs. In the months leading up to Mr Ulbricht's arrest, investigators undertook a painstaking process of piecing together the suspect's digital footprint, going back years into his history of communicating with others online. The detail of how the FBI has built its case was outlined in a court complaint document published on Wednesday. The search started with work from Agent-1, the codename given to the expert cited in the court documents, who undertook an "extensive search of the internet" that sifted through pages dating back to January 2011. The trail began with a post made on a web forum where users discussed the use of magic mushrooms. In a post titled "Anonymous market online?", a user nicknamed Altoid started publicising the site. Continue reading the main story What was the Silk Road? Silk Road took its name from the historic trade routes spanning Europe, Asia and parts of Africa. News reports and other internet chatter helped it become notorious. However, most users would not have been able to stumble upon the site as the service could only be accessed through a service called Tor - a facility that routes traffic through many separate encrypted layers of the net to hide data identifiers. Tor was invented by the US Naval Research Laboratory and has subsequently been used by journalists and free speech campaigners, among others, to safeguard people's anonymity. But it has also been used as a means to hide illegal activities, leading it to be dubbed "the dark web". Payments for goods on Silk Road were made with the virtual currency Bitcoin, which can be hard to monitor. Court documents from the FBI said the site had just under a million registered users, but investigators said they did not know how many were active. Earlier this year Carnegie Mellon University estimated that over $1.22m (£786,183) worth of trading took place on the Silk Road every month. "I came across this website called Silk Road," Altoid wrote. "Let me know what you think." The post contained a link to a site hosted by the popular blogging platform Wordpress. This provided another link to the Silk Road's location on the so-called "dark web". Records obtained by Agent-1 from Wordpress discovered, unsurprisingly, that the blog had been set up by an anonymous user who had hidden their location. But then Altoid appeared in another place: a discussion site about virtual currency, bitcointalk.org. Altoid - who the FBI claimed is Mr Ulbricht - was using "common online marketing" tactics. In other words, he was trying to make Silk Road go viral. Months later, in October, Altoid appeared again - but made a slip-up, granting investigators a major lead. In a post asking seeking to find an IT expert with knowledge of Bitcoin, he asked people to contact him via rossulbricht(a)gmail.com. With a Gmail address to hand, Agent-1 linked this address to accounts on the Google+ social network and YouTube video site. There he discovered some of Mr Ulbricht's interests. Among them, according viewing history, was economics. In particular, Mr Ulbricht's account had "favourited" several clips from the Ludwig von Mises Institute, a renowned Austrian school of economics. Years later, on the Silk Road discussion forums, Dread Pirate Roberts would make several references to the Mises Institute and its work. San Fran streets According to the court complaint document, it was the discovery of the rossulbricht(a)gmail.com email address that gave investigators a major boost in their search. Through records "obtained from Google", details of IP addresses - and therefore locations - used to log into Mr Ulbricht's account focused the search on San Francisco. Specifically, an internet cafe on Laguna Street. Furthermore, detailed analysis of Silk Road's source code highlighted a function that restricted who was able to log in to control the site, locking it down to just one IP address. As would be expected, Dread Pirate Roberts was using a VPN - virtual private network - to generate a "false" IP address, designed to cover his tracks. Google Streetview image of Hickory Street, San Francisco Mr Ulbricht said to have been running Silk Road from Hickory Street in San Francisco However, the provider of the VPN was subpoenaed by the FBI. While efforts had been made by DPR to delete data, the VPN server's records showed a user logged in from an internet cafe just 500 yards from an address on Hickory Street, known to be the home close friend of Mr Ulbricht's, and a location that had also been used to log into the Gmail account. At this point in the investigation, these clues, investigators concluded, were enough to suggest that Mr Ulbricht and DPR - if not the same person - were at the very least in the same location at the same time. Fake IDs The court complaint went into detail about further leads that followed. In July of this year, by coincidence, a routine border check of a package inbound from Canada discovered forged documents for several fake identities all containing photographs of the same person. Continue reading the main story How bitcoins work Bitcoin is often referred to as a new kind of currency. But it may be better to think of its units as being virtual tokens that have value because enough people believe they do and there is a finite number of them. Each of the 11 million Bitcoins currently in existence is represented by a unique online registration number. These numbers are created through a process called "mining", which involves a computer solving a difficult mathematical problem. Each time a problem is solved the computer's owner is rewarded with 25 Bitcoins. To receive a Bitcoin, a user must also have a Bitcoin address - a randomly generated string of 27 to 34 letters and numbers - which acts as a kind of virtual postbox to and from which the Bitcoins are sent. Since there is no registry of these addresses, people can use them to protect their anonymity when making a transaction. These addresses are in turn stored in Bitcoin wallets, which are used to manage savings. They operate like privately run bank accounts - with the proviso that if the data is lost, so are the Bitcoins contained. It was headed to San Francisco's 15th Street. Homeland security visited the address, and found the man in the photographs - Mr Ulbricht. He told officers that the people he lived with knew him simply as Josh - one housemate described him as being "always home in his room on the computer". Around the same time, investigators working on the Silk Road case later discovered, DPR had been communicating with users privately to ask for advice on obtaining fake IDs - needed in order to purchase more servers. Further activity attributed to Mr Ulbricht took place on Stack Overflow - a question and answer website for programmers - where a user named Frosty asked questions about intricate coding that later became part of the source code of Silk Road. In another apparent slip-up, one of Frosty's messages initially identified itself as being written by Ross Ulbricht - before being quickly corrected. "I believe that Ulbricht changed his username to 'frosty' in order to conceal his association with the message he had posted one minute before," lead prosecutor Christopher Tarbell wrote in court documents. "The posting was accessible to anyone on the internet and implicated him in operating a Tor hidden service." This presentation explores the special historic moment of our times, the transition to a world that works for all - and how we can participate in it’s emergence. Join us, for a challenging and inspiring exploration of the dynamics of what Joanna Macy has called “The Great Turning”. Civilization's transition mirrors that of many individuals: an old world falls apart and eventually we step into a new. As that happens, much that was once certain disintegrates, and our old ways of making choices and effecting change become obsolete. Vast new possibilities arise, even miraculous possibilities, yet we may also go through periods of loneliness and doubt. Let us ground ourselves more solidly in the new world, so that we may more fully believe -- and enact -- what we know in our hearts. Charles Eisenstein is a gifted teacher, speaker, and writer focusing on themes of civilization, consciousness, money, and human cultural evolution. Eisenstein is the author of such seminal and provocative books as "Sacred Economics: Money, Gift, and Society in the Age of Transition" and "The Ascent of Humanity: Civilization and the Human Sense of Self". His on-line writings have generated a vast following; he speaks frequently at conferences and other events, and gives numerous interviews on radio and podcasts. David Korten, author of "When Corporations Rule the World", called Eisenstein “one of the up-and-coming great minds of our time.” Eisenstein graduated from Yale University in 1989 with a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy, and spent the next ten years as a Chinese-English translator. Fwd: [Networkedlabour] CfP : Shared Machine Shops : Journal of Peer Production
by Michel Bauwens 01 Oct '13

01 Oct '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Johan Söderberg <johan.soderberg(a)sts.gu.se> Date: Tue, Oct 1, 2013 at 7:58 AM Subject: [Networkedlabour] CfP : Shared Machine Shops : Journal of Peer Production To: "networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org" <networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org > Apologies for multiple posts Call for Papers - Special issue of the Journal of Peer Production Shared Machine Shops: Beyond Local Prototyping and Manufacturing Deadline extended by two weeks - 15 October 2013 Editors: Maxigas (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya), Peter Troxler (International Fab Lab Association, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences) In the last years we have witnessed an incredible proliferation of shared machine shops in a confusing number of genres: hackerspaces, makerspaces, Fab Labs and their more commercial counterparts such as TechShops, co-working spaces, accelerators and incubators. These are currently "fringe phenomena" because they play a minor role in the production of wealth, knowledge, political consensus and the social organisation of life. Interestingly, however, they also experience the same core transformations as contemporary capitalism. That is, for the individual: the convergence of work, labour and other aspects of life. On a systemic level: the rapid development of algorithmically driven technical systems and their intensifying role in social organisation. Finally, as a corollary: the practical and legitimation crisis of modern institutions, echoed by renewed attempts at self-organisation. Arguably, hackers occupied such an ambiguous position since the beginning of hackerdom, but shared machine shops represent a new configuration. They appear as embodied communities organised in research and production units of physical and logical goods; they even appear to escape the subcultural ghetto as educational institutions, museums, and libraries start to integrate them into their ambit. They are eminent laboratories in both their practices and products: as experimental forms of social institutions, and as the developers of technological prototypes projecting new visions of the future. Industry actors, state authorities and policy makers have recognised such milieus as prolific grounds for recruitment and new organisational models, which in itself warrants critical attention. Inspired by all these developments, we dedicate the next special issue of the Journal of Peer Production to Fab Labs and similar places. Some of the questions we are interested in exploring: * What are the historical conditions and concrete genealogies which enabled the emergence of shared machine shops? (Can we talk about the renewed relevance of craftsmanship?) * Are rapid prototyping practices changing the relationships to technology, research and development, and innovation? (Are shared machine shops democratising knowledge and production or rather building a new maker elite?) * How do technologies cultivated in shared machine shops such as personal fabrication intervene in urban and rural geographies? (Is the time ripe for "global villages" or we have to adapt to "smart cities"?) * What new and old anthropologies and ethics are articulated in shared machine shops? (Who is the ?New Man? of Peer Production?) * Finally, how do shared machine shops interface with the political economy of contemporary capitalism and the military-industrial complex? (If the means of production are in the hands of the workers, is that free labour, a new form of outsourcing, or the germ for a next revolution?) Beyond local prototyping and manufacturing capability, what is the contribution of shared machine shops to critical practices of technology appropriation, to products, services and consumption patterns, to urban and rural geographies, and to practical political economy and ethics? Contributions are welcome from scholars and practitioners alike. Collaborative efforts are encouraged. We are mainly expecting academic papers on the one hand, and commented project documentations or narrative vignettes on the other hand, but anything that can be presented on a website could work. However, submitters are advised to keep in mind that the content should address questions of consequence to practitioners, based on realities on the ground, while at the same time they should be reflexive and consider their wider intellectual context. Submission proposals of up to 500 words due by October 15, 2013, and should be sent to fablabissue(a)peerproduction.net Submissions will be notified by October 30, 2013, and full papers and materials (research papers around 8,000 words, testimonies and documents around 3,000 words) are due by January 31st, 2014, for review. Final submission deadline is June 1st, 2014. The special issue is due to appear in early July 2014. Research papers are peer reviewed according to JoPP review policies. ====== _______________________________________________ Networkedlabour mailing list Networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Allan Sheahan argues that the path to ending poverty is a basic income guarantee (BIG)--an idea which we'd like to see debated again in the public arena. Unfortunately, neither the Obama Administration nor Democrats in Congress have put poverty on their agenda, so ideas about how to solve it are not even being discussed. It's time to change that!--Rabbi Michael Lerner *Jobs Are Not the Answer* by Allan Sheahen The current unemployment rate of 7.5% percent means close to 20 million Americans remain unemployed or underemployed. Nobody states the obvious truth: that the marketplace has changed and there will*never* again be enough jobs for everyone who wants one -- no matter who is in the White House or in Congress. Fifty years ago, economists predicted that automation and technology would displace thousands of workers a year. Now we even have robots doing human work. Job losses will only get worse as the 21st century progresses. Global capital will continue to move jobs to places on the planet that have the lowest labor costs. Technology will continue to improve, eliminating countless jobs. There is no evidence to back up the claim that we can create jobs for everyone who wants one. To rely on jobs and economic growth does not work. We have to get rid of the myth that "welfare-to-work" will solve the problems of unemployment, poverty, and homelessness. "Work" and jobs are not the answer to ending poverty. This has been the hardest concept for us to understand. It's the hardest concept to sell to citizens and policy makers. To end poverty and to achieve true economic freedom, we need to break the link between work and income. Job creation is a completely wrong approach because the world doesn't need everyone to have a job in order to produce what is needed for us to live a decent, comfortable life. We need to re-think the whole concept of having a job. When we say we need more jobs, what we really mean is we need is more money to live on. *Basic Income Guarantee* One answer is to establish a basic income guarantee (BIG), enough at least to get by on -- just above the poverty level -- for everyone. Each of us could then try to find work to earn more. A basic income would provide economic freedom and income security to everyone. We'd have the freedom to work less if we wanted to, or work the same amount and save or spend that money. It would provide a direct stimulus to the economy, which would help create more jobs. In 1972, Democratic Presidential candidate and Senator George McGovern knew the economy was changing. He proposed a $1000 annual "demogrant" for every American. The grant would act as a kind of cushion against the loss of a job or other misfortune. We could pay for a Basic Income Guarantee by eliminating most of the 20th-century programs like unemployment insurance, welfare, Social Security, Section 8 housing, etc., and by having the wealthy pay their fair share in taxes. Billionaire Warren Buffett admits he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. Mitt Romney said he paid only 13.9 percent in federal income tax in 2010, despite earning $22 million. Average-income Americans pay about 20 percent. A BIG would be cheaper than a jobs program. President Obama's 2009 stimulus plan promised to create 3 to 4 million jobs at a cost of $862 billion. That's over $200,000 per job. Such a basic income would recognize that with productivity as high as it is today, too many workers get in each other's way. Those who don't have to work shouldn't be required to do so. Instead, they can create, do volunteer service, or work at low-paying jobs which are still socially needed, such as teaching or the arts. Think of it as the opposite of trickle-down economics, where we give huge tax breaks to the rich in the false hope that something will trickle down to the rest of us. *Not a New Idea* Basic income is not a new idea. It's been debated among policymakers in several nations since the 1970s. Economist Milton Friedman said: "We should replace the ragbag of specific welfare programs with a single comprehensive program of income supplements in cash -- a negative income tax." The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., said: "I am convinced that the simplest solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by a guaranteed income." BIG's most recent American advocate is welfare critic Charles Murray. In his book: *In Our Hands,* Murray agrees with Friedman and King, and proposes a $10,000 yearly grant paid to every adult. Murray and others argue it would save money. There would be no bureaucracy to support and no red tape to manage. Opponents claim we shouldn't pay people not to work. But the duty to pursue work is based on the mistaken assumption that there is work to be had. In the post-industrial age, the USA will provide ever fewer opportunities for low-skilled workers. Policies in pursuit of full employment make no sense. *Basic Income Can Work* In 1982, the state of Alaska began distributing money from state oil revenues to every resident. The Alaska Permanent Fund gives about $1000 to $2000 each year to every man, woman, and child in the state. In 2012, the amount fell to $878. There are no work requirements. The grant has reduced poverty and the inequality of income in Alaska. A 10-year, 7800-family, U.S. government test of a basic income in the 1970s found that most people would continue to work, even when their incomes were guaranteed. A test in Manitoba, Canada produced similar results. In 2005, Brazil created a basic income for the most needy. When fully implemented, the plan will ensure that all Brazilians, regardless of their origin, race, sex, age, social or economic status, will have a monetary income enough to meet their basic needs. A two-year, basic income pilot program just concluded in Otjivero, Namibia. Each of 930 villagers received 1000 Namibian dollars (US$12.40) each month. Malnutritition rates of children under five fell from 42% to zero. Droupout rates at the school fell from 40% to almost zero. It led to an increase in small businesses. Most Americans are six months from poverty. Middle-class people who worked all their lives, then lost their jobs and saw their unemployment benefits expire, are now sleeping in parks and under bridges. America hasn't seen full employment in decades. Even a full-time job at the minimum wage can't lift a family of three from poverty. Millions of Americans -- children, the aged, the disabled -- are unable to work. A basic income guarantee would be like an insurance policy. It would give each of us the assurance that, no matter what happened, we and our families wouldn't starve. *Allan Sheahen is the author of the new book,* Basic Income Guarantee: Your Right to Economic Security*.
