Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Internet Needs an Uncompromising "Marco Civil" in Brazil!
by Michel Bauwens 28 Oct '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <jz(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Mon, Oct 28, 2013 at 12:11 PM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Internet Needs an Uncompromising "Marco Civil" in Brazil! To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Themes: FREEDOMS ONLINE, MARCO CIVIL, INTERNET, BRAZIL, INTERNATIONAL, OPEN LETTER La Quadrature du Net – For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/internet-needs-an-uncompromising-marco-civi… Internet Needs an Uncompromising "Marco Civil" in Brazil! *** Paris, 28 October 2013 — Major organizations from all around the world, defending free speech and freedoms online, signed this open letter initiated by La Quadrature du Net. It encourages for a swift adoption, in Brazil, of an uncompromising "Marco Civil de Internet" [1] that would truly guarantee freedoms online. The vote is scheduled on Tuesday. *** ** Internet Needs an Uncompromising “Marco Civil” in Brazil! ** The “Marco Civil da Internet” is a remarkably progressive legislative text to protect Internet and fundamental rights online in Brazil. It has been drafted through an unprecedented collaborative effort involving citizens. But for the past 3 years, it has remained stuck in Parliament, under heavy pressure by industry – mostly telecom – lobbies. Recent revelations of massive illegal spying by the US on citizens worldwide, as well as on companies such as Petrobras, urged the president of Brazil Dilma Roussef to put “Marco Civil” back on track in Parliament, in an emergency procedure. The “Marco Civil”, guaranteeing Net Neutrality, protecting privacy and freedom of publication online, is more necessary than ever. If adopted, this law will be a model of what citizens and their representatives in all countries can do together to enable the development of a free and open Internet and protect freedoms online. A corporate takeover of the text such as on the questions of copyright (paragraph 2 of art.15) would amount to empty the text of its meaning. Provisions aiming at protecting privacy and preventing surveillance should be added and all measures which risk harming the possibility for citizens to collaborate on an international scale should be removed. We encourage Brazilian citizens and Members of the Parliament to work towards adopting swiftly an uncompromising “Marco Civil”, consistent with its initial spirit, free from corporate influence, and that would truly guarantee freedoms online. You can count on our support as such a law would be of global importance for the Internet! More specifically, it advocates for the adaptation of French and European legislations to respect the founding principles of the Internet, most notably the free circulation of knowledge. In addition to its advocacy work, the group also aims to foster a better understanding of legislative processes among citizens. Through specific and pertinent information and tools, La Quadrature du Net hopes to encourage citizens' participation in the public debate on rights and freedoms in the digital age. Fwd: Breaking social class solidarity via bias ? : "characteristics of the political and social landscape of post-socialist countries" ?

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat, Oct 26, 2013 at 3:26 PM Subject: Breaking social class solidarity via bias ? : "characteristics of the political and social landscape of post-socialist countries" ? To: "econowmix(a)googlegroups.com" <econowmix(a)googlegroups.com> Mariya Ivancheva (Central European University, Sociology and Social Anthropology) just uploaded a paper on Academia.edu: *The Bulgarian protest wave of 2012-2013 * *http://www.academia.edu/4888291/The_Bulgarian_protest_wave_of_2012-2013 " I show a number of characteristics of the political and social landscape of post-socialist Bulgaria, which have made the anti-neoliberal or anti-capitalist framing of the protests in- creasingly difficult. I claim that a reason for this has been a few mutually reinforcing characteristics of the Bulgarian protests, typical not only for Bulgaria, but also for other post-socialist countries. First, the recurrence or persistence of a strong neo-liberal capitalist party in power – which draws on the symbolic legacy of state socialism but fervently destroys socialist welfare institutions – perpetuates a strong ‘anti-communist’ framing of the protests. Second, the trope of the ‘hard-working middle class’ – a main slogan of the transition to liberal democracy and free-market capitalism since 1989 – has made in- ter-class alliances between the economically vulnerable low- and high-skilled workers impossible. Last, but not least, given the decades of creation of neo-liberal hegemony in the country, ‘smoothly functioning capitalism’ has been seen as a solution to, and not the cause of, impoverishment, indebtedness, and pre- carity. These three motives, which are all present in the Bulgarian case, make it impossible to frame protests in an anti-neoliberal and anti-capitalist way. They also draw a line between parallel but not coin- ciding waves of social protests around the world: a demarcation that might turn out to be a frontline in emergent mobilization for global social change. Dear Kevin, thanks for doing something with the announcement, and the pdf, for the p2p blog, Michel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: David Bollier <david(a)bollier.org> Date: Sat, Oct 26, 2013 at 6:23 PM Subject: Report/summary of Economics and Commons Conference To: Saki Bailey <sbailey(a)iuctorino.it> Dear Friends of the Commons,**** ** ** We hope that you are still feasting on the knowledge and insights that you picked up at the Economics and the Commons Conference in Berlin! If not, we are pleased to announce the release of an 80-page report / summary of the conference that you can download as a pdf file here: http://www.boell.de/sites/default/files/ecc_report_final.pdf ****** **The report consists of abbreviated versions of all of the ten keynote talks; brief summaries of the stream discussions; short overviews of each of the side events (with contact information for the hosts); a guide to the wiki resources on commons and economics; and an account of the Francophone network of commoners.**** ** ** Let us also call your attention to the remarkable collection of video interviews that Remix the Commons shot at the ECC. The videos -- recently posted at the Remix website, http://www.remixthecommons.org/en -- provide another vivid perspective on the conference. They include dozens of commoners giving their definitions of the commons and participating in roundtable interviews. The videos will be posted on the Remix playlists progressively as they are finalized. ** ** At the end of the ECC Report, the Commons Strategies Group offers some final reflections on the event’s significance for the commons movement. We look back at the 2010 International Commons Conference and consider some of the ways in which our efforts have matured, and some of the challenges that we face in the years ahead.**** ** ** Please feel free to share this report with friends and colleagues, or the post it on your websites. We hope that this synthesis of the ECC will refresh your memory of some of the powerful statements and themes presented there. May it also stimulate the thinking of those who could not attend Please be aware that several websites will continue to act as repositories for content generated by the ECC:.**** · The ECC webpages maintained by the Böll Foundation: http://www.boell.de/en/economics-and-commons · The Communications Platform that was used at the ECC: http://commonsandeconomics.org · The commons and economics webpages on the P2P Foundation wiki: See links on p. 73 of the ECC report **** **** ** ** Again, we wish to thank everyone for helping to make the ECC such a thought-provoking, energizing event! ( Japanese games ) To: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24614830 *This girlfriend is actually a Nintendo computer game called Love Plus, which comes as a small portable tablet. * Nurikan and Yuge take their girlfriends, Rinko and Ne-ne, on actual dates to the park, and buy them cakes to celebrate their birthdays. Nurikan says he keeps Rinko a secret from his wife, and hopes he never has to choose between them. ... They are a generation of geeks who have grown up through 20 years of economic stagnation and have chosen to tune out and immerse themselves in their own fantasy worlds. It seems they no longer have the ambition of the post-war alpha males who made Japan such an economic powerhouse and no interest in joining a company and becoming a salary man. They have taken on a mole-like existence and, worryingly, withdrawn from relationships with the opposite sex. A survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in 2010 found 36% of Japanese males aged 16 to 19 had no interest in sex - a figure that had doubled in the space of two years. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
