Dear Chris, at page 40+something, you'll see the article on Democracy Village, is there a chance you could scribd it, embed in a blog sept 20 or after, and I would then write an intro to it? see http://www.radicalanthropologygroup.org/old/journal_04.pdf I strongly recommend this journal to all people interested in an anthropological basis for p2p, Michel -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

two comments on internet and spirituality
by Michel Bauwens 10 Sep '11

via the nextnet mailing list, reacting on previous commentary at NextNet: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Sep 09 08:38AM +0700 ^<#13250fb0e9a0f971_digest_top> Though I'm quite critique of Ken Wilber (google my name and his for my critiques), I still like the concept of the three eyes ... Paraphrased of what I remember, the eye of matter is how the mind looks at material phenomena, and deals with the area of science; the eye of mind, looks at the human production of minds (and requires the rules of mind, logic, philosophy, novels, theatre), i.e. the humanities and the social sciences, hermeneutics, in short the 'sciences' of meaning. The eye of spirit looks at the production of 'events' when we are in meditation or 'witnessing mode', i.e. when we leave the area of language to directly experience the numimous ... Obviously, the eye of mind is the great mediator, since we always come back to our mind and the medation of language, and equally obviously, mind and spirit can be examined with the eye of matter as well, but just as it is reductionist to explain say human love exclusively through chemistry, it would just be as reductionist to explain away mystical and gnostic numinous experiences through the brain mapping of its chemistries ... The direct experiencing of what is beyond language deserves its own respect. I think that Richard's notion of scientism could easily encompass those two dangers of reductionism. John Heron's spiritual inquiry, or Jorge Ferrer's approach allow for spiritual explorations that are completely compatible with reason and science. Modern human beings need the skills to navigate easily to and from the different realms, respecting the rules of each .. when experiencing the numinous, poetry, mystical language, direct visual expression of what has been seen, is the most appropriate; when discerning it's meaning, we use hermeneutics, when examining its material basis, the sciences of matter (neurobiology etc..) Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Sep 09 07:26PM +0700 ^<#13250fb0e9a0f971_digest_top> Another thing I would like to see about this, and which is quite different from the approach taken by Richard, especially at the end of the article. There, Richard seems to assume a total opposition between rational and magical thinking, but is that really so? Is there a rational way to produce art and poetry, or isn't art and poetry produced by different epistemological functionings. In other words, reason is just one epistemological mode, not an exclusive one. If we take an integral approach, then it is perfectly possible to explore and use both magical and mythological modes. Sometimes, a-rational modes can produce very useful knowledge. Just to illustrate, two studies I remember, but cannot reference, but I can assure you I did see them. One was a study comparing the medical effectiveness of traditionally trained acupuncturists with western trained acupuruntists, showing the traditional ones to be more effective ... this is so despite acupuncture not really making any scientific sense within the western paradigm the other was a longitudinal study in the netherlands, about the effectiveness of various forms of therapy. TO the great despair of the researchers, reincarnation therapy came out on top ... That doesn't make it true, but makes it worth engaging with it. In general, spiritual techniques such as concentration, meditation, yoga, tantra, orthodox prayer techniques, tibetan visualisation techniques, etc. .. will disclose human potentials that are simply not offered by secular science. And this is just a general argument, it is really useful to engage with other people's perspectives, ontologies and epistemologies, and to understand them from within, without prejudging them. There are thousands of years of intensely engaging with the 'inner world', which leave proven biophysical effects on the bodymind, and it would be really a shame to ignore them. Is it really the animistic/shamanistic tribes that are destroying the biosphere, the scientists, embedded as they are in the capitalist and industrial power system? The answer shows that it would not be wise to reject a 'magical thinking' which sees life and awareness everywhere, and therefore respects it much more deeply than a science which sees only dead objects. An integral, rather than oppositional attitude, would be more productive in allowing us to critically engage with other perspectives, which are also valid ways of being and seeing the world. Especially at the end of the article, where you assume that people that use magical thinking are purposely dishonest, is really in my opinion a travesty of the truth. It is simply their vision and lifeworld. Fwd: Post Monetary Economics on Quora
by Michel Bauwens 09 Sep '11

09 Sep '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Sep 8, 2011 at 3:33 PM Subject: Post Monetary Economics on Quora To: econowmix(a)googlegroups.com http://www.quora.com/Post-Monetary-Economics Flemming Funch <http://www.quora.com/Flemming-Funch>, Futurist *7* votes by Sean Owczarek <http://www.quora.com/Sean-Owczarek>, Dan Loewenherz <http://www.quora.com/Dan-Loewenherz>, Curtis Faith<http://www.quora.com/Curtis-Faith> , (more<http://www.quora.com/Post-Monetary-Economics/How-could-and-should-a-resourc…> ) Surprisingly, the best way of implementing a resource-based economy might well be a truly free market. First, notice that you'd be hard pressed to find any free market on this planet at this time. You might be used to the double-speak that equates free markets with capitalism, but the truth is really quite the opposite. Capitalism involves a monopoly on money creation in the hands of banks. The way of doing really well in capitalism, if one isn't the bank itself, is to maneuver oneself into a monopoly position in some other field, where people are more or less forced to pay whatever one asks, because there's no competition. Often this is because one has bribed politicians to secure one's position, or because one has "intellectual property," or because one's multi-national corporation can operate outside the law of most jurisdictions, but still act as a legal "person" within them. This all has nothing to do with free markets. The ideal in free market economics is that perfectly informed participants will make perfect decisions about value. When something is valuable, there's more incentive to produce more of it, because one will be rewarded for doing so. When something is not found valuable, production of it would decrease. The ideal vision that many economists hold is that there's a collective intelligence that emerges from the informed value decisions of many individuals, even if those decisions are made in a "selfish" way. One might choose an activity based simply on it increasing in perceived value, and one therefore being likely to be well rewarded. If the value was correctly determined, it doesn't matter. It will contribute to a self-adjusting mechanism that is good for the whole. There's an "invisible hand" which optimizes everything. The thing is, this isn't crazy at all. Ironically, this vision is as much a socialist utopia as it is a libertarian one. Centralized planning of vast resources has traditionally worked badly. That's what they did in the Soviet Union. The result was that everybody has a place to live and a job, but it was only barely above poverty level, and there was only a few hours of work to do per day, because nobody really cared, and personal initiative and motivation had been taken totally out of the equation (where they really should be key ingredients). * What is needed is a self-organizing bottom-up network of very well-informed, free individuals working together to solve the problems at hand. * Each individual is the closest to make judgments about what they find important and valuable in their local area. They can see what needs to be done, and go work on it. They can see what is missing, and look for where that might be found. *If everybody indeed is very well-informed, they will (of course) choose to work on the most important things there are to work on, which they're capable of and interested in doing.* And they will (of course) acquire the very best products, the very best methods, and the very best partners. If some product is crappy or unnecessarily expensive, nobody will use it. If some person acts like a selfish asshole, nobody will work with him. If they're well-informed, that is. If society is transparent and correct information is available, correct decisions in the small will tend to scale into correct decisions at bigger levels. *A complex, self-organizing system can operate at a much higher degree of synergy and efficiency than a simplistic, centralized system.* The key component of a resource-based economy is a collaborative information system that can't be tampered with. You see some of the elements of this on the Internet today. For example, instead of relying on what an ad says about a product, you might find a website that compares all the products in that category in great detail and tells you which one is best, based on the input from thousands of people who have tried them. This isn't yet perfect, as you can also find mountains of mis-information on the Internet (and people can game the system with fake reviews, etc.), but you get the idea. *What is needed is an information system that can be shared by millions of people, capable of aggregating the available information and decisions from all participants, showing patterns in this information. Critically, in an incorruptible manner. A system that can't be tricked or bought or threatened or legislated into spreading lies.* Most likely, to truly get there, *the rules will first need to be changed so that multi-national mega corporations are no longer possible, corporate personhood revoked, intellectual property abolished, and privately-owned central banking abandoned.* But even if none of those happen first, a sufficiently sophisticated shared information system can help gradually remove all of those, if it would become visible what these institutions actually do and what their real value is and isn't. To summarize: the resource-based economy will be driven by a distributed information system. It will be a market economy, an informed interaction between free participants, not any centrally planned dictatorship. It will allow everybody to make meaningful decisions and to contribute to the collective value, in part by maximizing the productive use of all available resources. Our lawyer answered all their questions precisely, pointing out Facebook's vulnerability (the website did not have any anti-scraping protection for years), the inconsistency of the accusations of criminal violations (we didn't break security measures) and our right to document our art project on the website face-to-facebook.net. The letter ends: "Moreover, given the recent controversy and questions regarding the legality of Facebook's own "facial recognition" software ("Facebook 'Face Recognition' Feature Draws Privacy Scrutiny", Bloomberg News, July 8 2011), we are surprised that Facebook would continue to aggressively pursue a nonprofit conceptual art project that illustrated the risks of sharing data on social networking websites and wrapped up long ago." *The social experiment (new documents):* We published the personal reactions that we have received so far. Human Oratorio”, Victoria Gallery, part of 4th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, Moscow (RU), 25/09/11, 8 pm http://4th.moscowbiennale.ru/en/program/special_projects/afgan_en.html Document 9, Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow (UK) 21/10/11, 8 pm; followed by a Q & A session with O. Ressler, led by Katarzyna Kosmala http://documentfilmfestival.org The 2-channel video installation “Socialism Failed, Capitalism is Bankrupt. What comes Next?” is currently presented in the exhibition: “The Workers” MASS MoCA – Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams (USA) till Mar 15, 2012 http://www.massmoca.org/event_details.php?id=631 “Socialism Failed, Capitalism is Bankrupt. What comes Next?” focuses on the political and economic situation in the Republic of Armenia, one of the successor states of the Soviet Union. The film was recorded in summer 2010 in Yerevan’s largest bazaar, called “Bangladesh”. Every day more than 1000 people try to survive as traders in the “Bangladesh” bazaar, where an average vendor does not earn more than 100 to 250 Euros per month. In the film, the market’s traders talk about their struggles to survive during crises in a post-socialist state that closed most Soviet-era factories and dissolved social safety nets. The market’s traders, primarily former factory-workers, describe how their living conditions worsened after the end of the Soviet Union; they speak about their hopes and expectations for social change. While they live in misery, a small but highly influential class of corrupt politicians and super-rich oligarchs team up with international corporations in order to fill their pockets with profits from transferring state property and licenses for mining. A former mathematics professor Levon Yeremyan, who now survives by trading in the “Bangladesh” bazaar, notes, “95 per cent of people work and get the minimum wage, which is ridiculously low by European standards, and 5 per cent live like Arab sheikhs.” Most people would definitely agree with his description of the wide gap between the impoverished masses and the oligarchs in Armenia. This deep divide contradicts the official flattering data. Concept, camera, sound recording, video editing and production: Oliver Ressler Interviews, translation and editing assistance: Arpineh Galfayan Audio mix and color correction: Rudi Gottsberger The project was done during a residency in Yerevan in the framework of the project “Eat and Work”, directed by Anna Barseghian, supported by Utopiana and BM:UKK.
