for the asia lovers amongst us .. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: FlipFlop Productions <flipflop.productions(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Aug 18, 2011 at 4:04 AM Subject: something you may be interested in... To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> http://www.pinyin.info/chinese/crisis.html I got a note together on the topic too adding chaos and energy dynamics: Wēijī, Crisis and Chaos Please read the original article which was written by Victor Mair in reaction to misuse in economic theory of the Mandarin character for crisis and its misinterpretation of implying both 'danger' and 'opportunity'. You can find it here: http://www.pinyin.info/chinese/crisis.html I would like to draw attention to another angle on this case which ultimately poses some serious challenges. Wéi does indeed mean danger, and of Jí Mair wrote: "The jī of wēijī, in fact, means something like “incipient moment; crucial point (when something begins or changes).” Aside from the notion of “incipient moment” or “crucial point” discussed above, the graph for jī by itself indicates “quick-witted(ness); resourceful(ness)” and “machine; device....one might elaborate upon it as the dynamic of a situation's unfolding, when many elements are at play. In this sense, jī is neutral. This jī can either turn out for better or for wors" Secondary meanings were given as follows: ji: mechanism, inner workings (and by extension secrecy), germinal principle, pivotal juncture, crux, or a witty turn of thought. The approach taken here is from Chaos theory, or complexity theory: "Kellert (1993) defines chaos theory as "the qualitative study of unstable aperiodic behavior in deterministic nonlinear dynamical systems" (p. 2). Chaos theory was formulated during the 1960s. Its story is one of many people--scientists who dared to think along new and unsuspected channels. The name *chaos* was coined by Jim Yorke, an applied mathematician at the University of Maryland (Ruelle, 1991, p. 67)." According to " findings of modern chaos theory, seeds of order seem to be embedded in chaos, while seeds of chaos are apparently embedded in order. Systems that are stable in relation to their environment can become unstable. Systems that are unstable can return to stability. Another important finding is that the behavior of a system in stability and its behavior after becoming unstable are acausal." "In terms of systems, chaos is a state space (the condition of any system at a given time) where a system exhibits disorder, confusion, uncertainty, or instability" "The dictionary defines order as "a fixed or definite plan; system; law of arrangement." In terms of systems, order is a state space where a system exhibits clarity, certainty, or stability. Chaos and order can be considered polar opposites. We can go even farther here because, according to Çambel (1993), order and chaos, or determinism and chance, are like two sides of the same coin, and contrary to traditional thinking, there is no cause-and-effect relationship between the two." "Most dynamic systems, and all living systems, are open. Our body, for example, is an open system (Atkins, 1984, p. 179). Modern chaos theory addresses complex systems, which are systems with a large number of interrelated parts. It also addresses dynamic systems. There are two main types of dynamic systems: discrete and continuous. Every complex system, and especially every living system (living systems are ususally refered to as self-organizing systems) is also a dissipative structure. Ilya Prigogine won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1977 for his work on dissipative structures, which he defined as any structure that takes on and dissipates energy as it interacts with its environment. A dissipative system, unlike one that conserves energy, gives rise to irreversible processes (Nicolis & Prigogine, 1989). All systems that exhibit disequilibrium and self-organization are dissipative and have a dissipative structure (Briggs and Peat, 1989, p. 138). Thus, not only our physical body itself is such a structure, but every organ and cell as well. The term itself expresses a paradox, because * dissipative* suggests falling apart or chaos, while *structure* suggests organization and order. Dissipative systems are those which are able to maintain identity only because they are open to flows of energy, matter, or information from their environments (Prigogine and Stengers, 1984)." From http://www.schuelers.com/chaos/chaos1.htm One reinterpretation of the second law is as follows: " *If heat or energy is dissipated from a system such that a state-change reaction is provoked, the energy leaving the system and the corresponding decrease in internal motion will create a composite result, a more complex consequent comprised of a combination of once-simpler components. * *"* It is the realised position of many that we *are* in such a state change at all levels, these events we see in the forms of riots, revolutions, social, political, and economic unrest, all are mere surface signatures of a deep brewing.I would like to preclude the following with the following (;) Consciousness and concentration are of an amaterial form of energy whose conductivity is increased by connectivity. And so, like in the time after gutenbergs printing press, the renaissance , the unfolding of the enlightenment: the scientific method, the industrial revolution and so on as happened with the reverse archaeology of individuated conscious being, we now see the like happen again, there is an increase in said energy coursing through our shared system. In thermodynamics it is shown that when the energy flow animating a system is increased then the system must adapt new 'gradients' to dissipate the incoming energy. If the system does not do so it becomes hyper-chaotic and breaks down. And so back to our chinese character...there is danger; and if those who see it as opportunity are allowed to continue 'manning' the wheel things all will not be for the best. What is required to avoid the danger is JÍ: mechanism, inner workings, germinal principle, a witty turn of thought at this crux, this pivotal juncture. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: Understanding the Libyan Revolution: Aug. 24

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tikkun <rabbilerner(a)tikkun.org> Date: Wed, Aug 24, 2011 at 11:53 PM Subject: Understanding the Libyan Revolution: Aug. 24 To: Michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Tikkun<http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=rp%2FTUVSJJfHHih1Zuw…> to heal, repair and transform the world *A note from Rabbi Michael Lerner** * Join or Donate Now!<http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=BhV%2F9sitNBUPkGNYmQ…> Editor's note: *While Juan Cole's article may be a bit too quick to declare that the Libyan revolution has succeeded, it does provide us with a very useful analysis as well as a critique of those in the liberal or progressive world who dismissed the whole struggle as nothing but another example of Western imperialism. Sometimes even the Western powers can do good things, and a sophisticated spiritual progressive always seeks to understand the complexities rather than embracing one dimensional analyses. And this one could be wrong also! That's how we have to approach the world--with open heart, genuine caring about the well-being for others, and modesty about how much we know about the details of any given situation and how best to be helpful. That's why, in calling for the overthrow of another dictator, Asad of Syria, I placed that call within the framework of a commitment to non-violence, hoping that there could be in Syria a less violent resolution to the conflict than has happened so far in Libya, and Libya is not over yet!** --Rabbi Michael Lerner* Top Ten Myths About the Libya War by Juan Cole Posted on 08/22/2011 http://www.juancole.com/2011/08/top-ten-myths-about-the-libya-war.html The Libyan Revolution has largely succeeded, and this is a moment of celebration, not only for Libyans but for a youth generation in the Arab world that has pursued a political opening across the region. The secret of the uprising's final days of success lay in a popular revolt in the working-class districts of the capital, which did most of the hard work of throwing off the rule of secret police and military cliques. It succeeded so well that when revolutionary brigades entered the city from the west, many encountered little or no resistance, and they walked right into the center of the capital. Muammar Qaddafi was in hiding as I went to press, and three of his sons were in custody. Saif al-Islam Qaddafi had apparently been the de facto ruler of the country in recent years, so his capture signaled a checkmate. (Checkmate is a corruption of the Persian "shah maat," the "king is confounded," since chess came west from India via Iran). Checkmate. The end game, wherein the people of Tripoli overthrew the Qaddafis and joined the opposition Transitional National Council, is the best case scenario that I had suggested was the most likely denouement for the revolution. I have been making this argument for some time, and it evoked a certain amount of incredulity when I said it in a lecture in the Netherlands in mid-June, but it has all along been my best guess that things would end the way they have. I got it right where others did not because my premises turned out to be sounder, i.e., that Qaddafi had lost popular support across the board and was in power only through main force. Once enough of his heavy weapons capability was disrupted, and his fuel and ammunition supplies blocked, the underlying hostility of the common people to the regime could again manifest itself, as it had in February. I was moreover convinced that the generality of Libyans were attracted by the revolution and by the idea of a political opening, and that there was no great danger to national unity here. I do not mean to underestimate the challenges that still lie ahead- mopping up operations against regime loyalists, reestablishing law and order in cities that have seen popular revolutions, reconstituting police and the national army, moving the Transitional National Council to Tripoli, founding political parties, and building a new, parliamentary regime. Even in much more institutionalized and less clan-based societies such as Tunisia and Egypt, these tasks have proved anything but easy. But it would be wrong, in this moment of triumph for the Libyan Second Republic, to dwell on the difficulties to come. Libyans deserve a moment of exultation. I have taken a lot of heat for my support of the revolution and of the United Nations-authorized intervention by the Arab League and NATO that kept it from being crushed. I haven't taken nearly as much heat as the youth of Misrata who fought off Qaddafi's tank barrages, though, so it is OK. I hate war, having actually lived through one in Lebanon, and I hate the idea of people being killed. My critics who imagined me thrilling at NATO bombing raids were just being cruel. But here I agree with President Obama and his citation of Reinhold Niebuhr. You can't protect all victims of mass murder everywhere all the time. But where you can do some good, you should do it, even if you cannot do all good. I mourn the deaths of all the people who died in this revolution, especially since many of the Qaddafi brigades were clearly coerced (they deserted in large numbers as soon as they felt it safe). But it was clear to me that Qaddafi was not a man to compromise, and that his military machine would mow down the revolutionaries if it were allowed to. Moreover, those who question whether there were US interests in Libya seem to me a little blind. The US has an interest in there not being massacres of people for merely exercising their right to free assembly. The US has an interest in a lawful world order, and therefore in the United Nations Security Council resolution demanding that Libyans be protected from their murderous government. The US has an interest in its NATO alliance, and NATO allies France and Britain felt strongly about this intervention. The US has a deep interest in the fate of Egypt, and what happened in Libya would have affected Egypt (Qaddafi allegedly had high Egyptian officials on his payroll). Given the controversies about the revolution, it is worthwhile reviewing the myths about the Libyan Revolution that led so many observers to make so many fantastic or just mistaken assertions about it. 1. Qaddafi was a progressive in his domestic policies. While back in the 1970s, Qaddafi was probably more generous in sharing around the oil wealth with the population, buying tractors for farmers, etc., in the past couple of decades that policy changed. He became vindictive against tribes in the east and in the southwest that had crossed him politically, depriving them of their fair share in the country's resources. And in the past decade and a half, extreme corruption and the rise of post-Soviet-style oligarchs, including Qaddafi and his sons, have discouraged investment and blighted the economy. Workers were strictly controlled and unable to collectively bargain for improvements in their conditions. There was much more poverty and poor infrastructure in Libya than there should have been in an oil state. 2. Qaddafi was a progressive in his foreign policy. Again, he traded for decades on positions, or postures, he took in the 1970s. In contrast, in recent years he played a sinister role in Africa, bankrolling brutal dictators and helping foment ruinous wars. In 1996 the supposed champion of the Palestinian cause expelled 30,000 stateless Palestinians from the country. After he came in from the cold, ending European and US sanctions, he began buddying around with George W. Bush, Silvio Berlusconi and other right wing figures. Berlusconi has even said that he considered resigning as Italian prime minister once NATO began its intervention, given his close personal relationship to Qaddafi. Such a progressive. 3. It was only natural that Qaddafi sent his military against the protesters and revolutionaries; any country would have done the same. No, it wouldn't, and this is the argument of a moral cretin. In fact, the Tunisian officer corps refused to fire on Tunisian crowds for dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, and the Egyptian officer corps refused to fire on Egyptian crowds for Hosni Mubarak. The willingness of the Libyan officer corps to visit macabre violence on protesting crowds derived from the centrality of the Qaddafi sons and cronies at the top of the military hierarchy and from the lack of connection between the people and the professional soldiers and mercenaries. Deploying the military against non-combatants was a war crime, and doing so in a widespread and systematic way was a crime against humanity. Qaddafi and his sons will be tried for this crime, which is not "perfectly natural." 4. There was a long stalemate in the fighting between the revolutionaries and the Qaddafi military. There was not. This idea was fostered by the vantage point of many Western observers, in Benghazi. It is true that there was a long stalemate at Brega, which ended yesterday when the pro-Qaddafi troops there surrendered. But the two most active fronts in the war were Misrata and its environs, and the Western Mountain region. Misrata fought an epic, Stalingrad-style, struggle of self- defense against attacking Qaddafi armor and troops, finally proving victorious with NATO help, and then they gradually fought to the west toward Tripoli. The most dramatic battles and advances were in the largely Berber Western Mountain region, where, again, Qaddafi armored units relentlessly shelled small towns and villages but were fought off (with less help from NATO initially, which I think did not recognize the importance of this theater). It was the revolutionary volunteers from this region who eventually took Zawiya, with the help of the people of Zawiya, last Friday and who thereby cut Tripoli off from fuel and ammunition coming from Tunisia and made the fall of the capital possible. Any close observer of the war since April has seen constant movement, first at Misrata and then in the Western Mountains, and there was never an over-all stalemate. 5. The Libyan Revolution was a civil war. It was not, if by that is meant a fight between two big groups within the body politic. There was nothing like the vicious sectarian civilian-on-civilian fighting in Baghdad in 2006. The revolution began as peaceful public protests, and only when the urban crowds were subjected to artillery, tank, mortar and cluster bomb barrages did the revolutionaries begin arming themselves. When fighting began, it was volunteer combatants representing their city quarters taking on trained regular army troops and mercenaries. That is a revolution, not a civil war. Only in a few small pockets of territory, such as Sirte and its environs, did pro-Qaddafi civilians oppose the revolutionaries, but it would be wrong to magnify a handful of skirmishes of that sort into a civil war. Qaddafi's support was too limited, too thin, and too centered in the professional military, to allow us to speak of a civil war. 6. Libya is not a real country and could have been partitioned between east and west. Alexander Cockburn wrote, "It requites no great prescience to see that this will all end up badly. Qaddafi's failure to collapse on schedule is prompting increasing pressure to start a ground war, since the NATO operation is, in terms of prestige, like the banks Obama has bailed out, Too Big to Fail. Libya will probably be balkanized." I don't understand the propensity of Western analysts to keep pronouncing nations in the global south "artificial" and on the verge of splitting up. It is a kind of Orientalism. All nations are artificial. Benedict Anderson dates the nation-state to the late 1700s, and even if it were a bit earlier, it is a new thing in history. Moreover, most nation-states are multi-ethnic, and many long-established ones have sub- nationalisms that threaten their unity. Thus, the Catalans and Basque are uneasy inside Spain, the Scottish may bolt Britain any moment, etc., etc. In contrast, Libya does not have any well-organized, popular separatist movements. It does have tribal divisions, but these are not the basis for nationalist separatism, and tribal alliances and fissures are more fluid than ethnicity (which is itself less fixed than people assume). Everyone speaks Arabic, though for Berbers it is the public language; Berbers were among the central Libyan heroes of the revolution, and will be rewarded with a more pluralist Libya. This generation of young Libyans, who waged the revolution, have mostly been through state schools and have a strong allegiance to the idea of Libya. Throughout the revolution, the people of Benghazi insisted that Tripoli was and would remain the capital. Westerners looking for break-ups after dictatorships are fixated on the Balkan events after 1989, but there most often isn't an exact analogue to those in the contemporary Arab world. 7. There had to be NATO infantry brigades on the ground for the revolution to succeed. Everyone from Cockburn to Max Boot (scary when those two agree) put forward this idea. But there are not any foreign infantry brigades in Libya, and there are unlikely to be any. Libyans are very nationalistic and they made this clear from the beginning. Likewise the Arab League. NATO had some intelligence assets on the ground, but they were small in number, were requested behind the scenes for liaison and spotting by the revolutionaries, and did not amount to an invasion force. The Libyan people never needed foreign ground brigades to succeed in their revolution. 8. The United States led the charge to war. There is no evidence for this allegation whatsoever. When I asked Glenn Greenwald whether a US refusal to join France and Britain in a NATO united front might not have destroyed NATO, he replied that NATO would never have gone forward unless the US had plumped for the intervention in the first place. I fear that answer was less fact-based and more doctrinaire than we are accustomed to hearing from Mr. Greenwald, whose research and analysis on domestic issues is generally first-rate. As someone not a stranger to diplomatic history, and who has actually heard briefings in Europe from foreign ministries and officers of NATO members, I'm offended at the glibness of an answer given with no more substantiation than an idee fixe. The excellent McClatchy wire service reported on the reasons for which then Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, the Pentagon, and Obama himself were extremely reluctant to become involved in yet another war in the Muslim world. It is obvious that the French and the British led the charge on this intervention, likely because they believed that a protracted struggle over years between the opposition and Qaddafi in Libya would radicalize it and give an opening to al-Qaeda and so pose various threats to Europe. French President Nicolas Sarkozy had been politically mauled, as well, by the offer of his defense minister, Michèle Alliot-Marie, to send French troops to assist Ben Ali in Tunisia (Alliot-Marie had been Ben Ali's guest on fancy vacations), and may have wanted to restore traditional French cachet in the Arab world as well as to look decisive to his electorate. Whatever Western Europe's motivations, they were the decisive ones, and the Obama administration clearly came along as a junior partner (something Sen. John McCain is complaining bitterly about). 9. Qaddafi would not have killed or imprisoned large numbers of dissidents in Benghazi, Derna, al-Bayda and Tobruk if he had been allowed to pursue his March Blitzkrieg toward the eastern cities that had defied him. But we have real-world examples of how he would have behaved, in Zawiya, Tawargha, Misrata and elsewhere. His indiscriminate shelling of Misrata had already killed between 1000 and 2000 by last April,, and it continued all summer. At least one Qaddafi mass grave with 150 bodies in it has been discovered. And the full story of the horrors in Zawiya and elsewhere in the west has yet to emerge, but it will not be pretty. The opposition claims Qaddafi's forces killed tens of thousands. Public health studies may eventually settle this issue, but we know definitively what Qaddafi was capable of. 10. This was a war for Libya's oil. That is daft. Libya was already integrated into the international oil markets, and had done billions of deals with BP, ENI, etc., etc. None of those companies would have wanted to endanger their contracts by getting rid of the ruler who had signed them. They had often already had the trauma of having to compete for post-war Iraqi contracts, a process in which many did less well than they would have liked. ENI's profits were hurt by the Libyan revolution, as were those of Total SA. and Repsol. Moreover, taking Libyan oil off the market through a NATO military intervention could have been foreseen to put up oil prices, which no Western elected leader would have wanted to see, especially Barack Obama, with the danger that a spike in energy prices could prolong the economic doldrums. An economic argument for imperialism is fine if it makes sense, but this one does not, and there is no good evidence for it (that Qaddafi was erratic is not enough), and is therefore just a conspiracy theory. Movie CONNECTED
by Michel Bauwens 12 Sep '11

12 Sep '11

Dear Chris, This intro text (my chosen excerpt first, full text below) to the film Connected seems worth sharing, Could you publish this excerpt, with embedded trailer, to the p2p blog? any time after sept 23? Michel The concept of interdependence isn’t new; it’s been around since the dawn of humanity. For two-hundred-thousand years, we’ve been connecting through networks both natural and technological. Interdependence has long been a tenet of Eastern philosophy and indigenous cosmologies. But the recent addition of the Internet has added a new layer, which connects us in a fresh way, giving the world a new type of central nervous system. Something happens in one place, and we can see it, feel it, and do something about it almost instantaneously. *Safety copy below the line (original URL is inconsistent)* Technology is clearly changing us, especially the way we connect with our friends, families, and the world around us. It has this huge potential. But technology has also led to some of the biggest problems of our day. It’s accelerating our connectedness in ways we can’t even predict or be completely aware of. Take the honeybees and their well-documented disappearance. Albert Einstein predicted that if honeybees were to disappear, humanity would be gone in four years. Several theories explain why the honeybees are disappearing—toxic chemicals being the most likely cause—but the impacts of an entirely new grid of human-induced electromagnetic energy has also been proposed as the culprit. New books such as Nicholas Carr’s *The Shallows* and Sherry Turkle’s *Alone Together *highlight studies that show how our behaviors and brains are negatively affected by a 24/7 digitally connected world. The sociopolitical warnings in Eli Pariser’s *The Filter Bubble* and Evgeny Mozrozov’s *The Net Delusion* are another concern. My father, Leonard Shlain, loved to quote Sophocles: “Nothing vast enters the life of mortals without a curse.” From the beginning of time, every new technological advancement has brought with it a complex mix of positive and negative repercussions as well as unintended consequences. I set out to make a film that addresses the potential of our twenty-first-century technologies and the importance of harnessing their powers. I also wanted to examine what can happen when these new technologies take over and sometimes overwhelm our personal lives. What does it mean to be *connected* in the twenty-first century? How can we use the power of all these connections to turn things around for the better? I titled the film *Connected: **An Autoblogography about Love, Death, and Technology*, and I asked my father to cowrite the project with me. *Connected | Official Trailer | In Theaters 9/16 [HD]*<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUBjnk_9n8Y&feature=player_embedded#%21> [2 minutes 31 seconds] *Overlooking the Personal* My dad was a surgeon but also a pioneer in writing about the connections between science, consciousness, the human brain, art, and civilization. His best-selling books include *The Alphabet Versus the Goddess*;* Sex, Time, and Power*; and* Art and Physics. *He was an incredible visionary who had a wonderful knowledge of history, and I felt he would make an enormous contribution to the film. He was one of the people who taught me to look for connections in the first place. He searched for patterns that gave insight into why we do what we do. His first book, *Art and Physics*, drew parallels between breakthroughs in art and breakthroughs in science. He found examples of this throughout history—such as the way Cubism challenged viewers’ notions about space and time right before Einstein published his theory about space and time and the way the artist Seurat started to paint with tiny dots around the same time that scientists were theorizing the existence of molecules. In *The Alphabet Versus the Goddess*, he presented evidence that showed whenever the alphabet and literacy were introduced into a society, they overstimulated the analytic left hemisphere of the brain and shifted the balance of power between men and women to favor patriarchal models. He traced this pattern throughout the centuries, finding links between the onset of literacy and the oppression of women throughout the world. For years he and I talked about making a film together, so when I started researching all these connections and how we could use them to help solve our problems, it was natural to ask him to be on the team. We were researching and writing and sharing drafts, and then one day, when I called to talk to him about the movie, he didn’t pick up. It turns out he had been rushed to the hospital after suffering a stroke. He was diagnosed with stage IV brain cancer and given nine months to live. All of a sudden, I was asking lots of new questions. I quickly realized that here I was, writing about all these interrelationships, and the one great connection I had overlooked was the emotional one. That’s when I began the difficult process of rewriting the film to include my personal story of connection, which I wove into the bigger story of connection throughout history and where I think we are heading. *Technology’s Seduction—and Potential* When I was twenty-one, I attempted my first feature film, *Zoli’s Brain*. I used magic surrealism to tell a story about the brain. It was my first big failure and, as I look back, one of the most important experiences of my life. It clearly reflected my interest in the brain. Now, almost twenty years later, there’s so much we still don’t know about the human brain. It’s one of the most complex biological systems on earth, consisting of 100 billion neurons and processing 70,000 thoughts a day. We do know that the brain is designed to seek connection with others. I am especially interested in the relationship between our brains and the addictive force of the new technologies. I found clues about this relationship in my reading about the hormone *oxytocin*, which the brain releases when humans connect with each other. Oxytocin decreases fear and anxiety; creates empathy, trust, and cooperation; and reinforces our urge to connect. The human brain is also designed to seek pleasure because of a hormone called *dopamine*. Researchers now know that the brain releases dopamine when new information is received. So every click, search, text, or Tweet has the potential to stimulate the same hormonal rush as sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll. But an interesting thing happens with dopamine—we never feel fully satiated. It’s called an *infinite dopamine loop*, which leaves us constantly wanting more. The combined release of oxytocin and dopamine when we are plugged into cyberspace helps explain humans’ insatiable hunger for knowledge, approval, and being constantly connected. [See David Rock’s *Your Brain at Work*.] It also explains my sneaking off to the bathroom to e-mail and Tweet when I’m having lunch with a friend! Technology is vast and has so much potential, but it’s also a curse. Our attention is pulled in so many directions that connecting widely can sometimes cost us the opportunity to connect deeply. So how do we prioritize our attention—know when to plug in mindfully and when to unplug—because we can’t escape these technologies? [See Matthew Gilbert’s article “A Twittering of Consciousness<http://noetic.org/blog/twittering-consciousness-part-ii/> .”] I’ve started practicing what I call “technology Shabbats” with my family. Every Friday at sundown, our whole family disconnects until Saturday night. No cell phones, no Internet, no television, no iPads, no multitasking. We disconnect completely—or should I say we connect completely with ourselves and one another. I am learning that turning off technology is just as powerful as turning it on, and that our society needs both. Technology can be so enticing and overwhelming, but we also need to remember how important it is both to be fully present with the people we love and to be alone and present to ourselves. The potential of technology, globally and personally, is exponential, but we also need to know where the off switch is. During the poignant time of making my film, I was reading my father’s new manuscript on Leonardo da Vinci. He proposes that in every species an occasional genetic mutation occurs that offers a unique glimpse into where the species might be headed. He believed da Vinci himself offered that glimpse, showing us what human beings can achieve when they synthesize the left and the right hemispheres of the brain. I loved this idea. All of a sudden, the answer to how we might use our increasing connectedness to tackle our problems became clearer. Five hundred years after da Vinci, the Internet might be giving us a glimpse into the future of our species. Even in its infancy, the Internet is helping each of us to synthesize the two hemispheres of our brain. Clicking through the explosion of textual information activates the left hemisphere, while linking from page to page and video to video stimulates the right hemisphere. I believe that the Internet is literally changing the way we think, moving us through a constantly evolving landscape of words and images at the touch of a keystroke, which synthesizes the two hemispheres of our brain. If this rewiring is happening on an individual level to each person who uses the web, imagine the cumulative global effect of this synthesis. Today there are close to 2 billion people online. What would the world look like if everyone on the planet could be online? It’s not that far away. There are already 5 billion cell phones on the planet! *The Era of Interdependence* It’s time to shift our perspective. In many ways, we as a species are mirroring the way we each develop as individual humans. We come into the world completely dependent on our parents. As we grow up, we evolve into independent adults; we live on our own, get our own jobs, and provide for our families. But this independence brings us to a new realization of how connected we are to family, friends, and community. I think that as a species we are evolving to understand our interdependence. Perhaps all these new tools we’re creating for collaborating through the Internet are leading us to this understanding, or perhaps the understanding is driving us to create these tools. Regardless of what’s propelling it, thinking and living *interdependently* will actually change our consciousness and help us create real transformation worldwide. To demonstrate this interdependence, I’ve created a new project—*Let it Ripple*—that picks up where *Connected *leaves off. This will be a series of six short films linked together by the overall theme of connectedness. The first film, *A Declaration of Interdependence, *is based on the United States’ Declaration of Independence. My colleagues and I posted and Tweeted our new declaration <http://connectedthefilm.com/interdependence/> on July 4, inviting people across the world to submit videos of themselves—whether from their cell phones, laptops, or whatever was handy—in which they read the declaration in their native language. We also asked graphic designers and artists to interpret the words creatively and to submit their artwork. The submissions are blowing me away. It’s interdependence in action. The film will be made up entirely of these submissions, edited down to a three-minute clip and tied together by our animator, Stefan Nadelman, and music by one of my favorite sound artists, Moby. *A Declaration of Interdependence *will premiere on September 12—Interdependence Day—at a special event near Ground Zero in New York. We are also distributing this film for free, allowing organizations and nonprofits to put their own call-to-action at the end of it. In sharing these messages of connectedness and interdependence, I believe there will be a positive ripple effect—sparks that will help turn what we’re talking about into action. It’s all about connection—connecting ideas, data, and cultures from millions of brains into a global thinking structure with infinite possibilities. Every text, hyperlink, and Tweet is like a neural synapse firing out to everyone we’re connected to. And with each connection, we get a surge of oxytocin, as if the Internet were creating a global network for oxytocin to flow. It will make us more empathetic, inclined to share, collaborate, and connect even more. The Internet is rewiring our brains to think interdependently, changing the way we connect to the world, online and offline. I remember what my mother taught me when she was studying psychology—emotional connection drives everything we do. So if we can just channel that emotional connection, we will be compelled to work together to solve the problems we face and take humanity to the next level. We’re at the beginning of a participatory revolution, in which people’s ideas are free to interact, reproduce, and cross-pollinate instantaneously, creating new hybrid ideas that combine perspectives from all over the world. As we become more connected, we’ll be able to see the cause and effect of our actions in real time—what we buy, donate, eat, and throw away. We’re just starting to unlock and share information about the trillions of things that we’ve made in this world. Once we understand the supply chains and see the links in our actions, we’ll be more thoughtful and conscious of our behavior. I believe in our innate ability to change for the better. Look at the end of slavery and apartheid, the women’s rights and civil rights movements, and other political and social transformative movements in the last few hundred years, and you can see that we are indeed evolving. Two things make me optimistic: human beings are curious, and we have a deep desire to connect. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Robert Steele <robert.david.steele.vivas(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Sep 12, 2011 at 4:43 PM Subject: Phi Beta Iota Post, Movie CONNECTED To: Douglas Rushkoff <rushkoff(a)gmail.com> Cc: Venessa Miemis <venessamiemis(a)gmail.com>, Michel Bauwens < michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> Berto Jongman: The Emerging Global Mind<http://www.phibetaiota.net/2011/09/berto-jongman-the-emerging-global-mind/> Categories: 11 Society<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/policies/11-society/> ,Advanced Cyber/IO<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/information-operations-io/advan…> ,Autonomous Internet<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/information-operations-io/auton…> ,Civil Society<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/communities/civil-journal/> ,Collective Intelligence<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/collaboration/collintel-collabo…> ,Cultural Intelligence<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/collaboration/culturalintel/> ,Earth Intelligence<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/collaboration/earthintel/> ,Gift Intelligence<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/collaboration/giftintel/> ,IO Deeds of Peace<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/information-operations-io/io-pe…> ,Methods & Process<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/training/methods/> ,Peace Intelligence<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/collaboration/peaceintel/> ,Strategy<http://www.phibetaiota.net/category/journal/training/strategy-reader/> <http://www.phibetaiota.net/2009/11/contributing-editor-berto-jongman/> Berto Jongman Recommends... Featured Article *The Emerging Global Mind*<http://noetic.org/noetic/issue-fourteen-september/the-emerging-global-mind/> *Noetic Now*, Issue Fourteen, September 2011<http://noetic.org/noetic/issue-fourteen-september/> by Tiffany Shlain Fifteen years ago I founded the Webby Awards <http://www.webbyawards.com/>. I was fascinated by how the Internet was connecting people all over the world in new and unexpected ways. I have also been struck by the many conversations about the problems of our day that view them as separate challenges—whether the environment, women’s rights, poverty, or social justice. It has become increasingly apparent to me that when you perceive everything as connected, it radically shapes your perspective. The concept of interdependence isn’t new; it’s been around since the dawn of humanity. This is based on a lecture at the RSA (www.theRSA.org) http://boingboing.net/2010/07/04/econopocalypse-the-m.html Marxist sociologist David Harvey gave a great presentation analyzing the econopocalypse in Marxist terms at London's Royal Society for the Arts. The talk is animated with high-speed whiteboard doodles from Cognitive Media<http://cognitivemedia.co.uk/>, a treatment that is really a top notch of augmenting complex lectures (I was so impressed with it, in fact, that I just stumped up for another year's membership at the RSA). -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: [open-government] Standard Parliament transcript format?

Question expressed in thread below : *"Does anyone know of any standard or spec covering the formatting and structure of transcripts of sessions of Parliament? "* answers given : http://www.theyworkforyou.com/ (UK Parliament transcripts site) has this format http://ukparse.kforge.net/parlparse/ This is used throughout the world in other Parliaments; http://theyworkforyou.co.nz/ http://www.openaustralia.org/ http://www.kildarestreet.com/ // [0] - http://www.akomantoso.org/ http://www.akomantoso.org/akoma-ntoso-in-detail/what-is-it There's Akoma Ntoso[0], which I've heard good things about but never got familiar with, let alone used. I believe it was originally developed for African parliaments and courts to exchange information via XML, but is designed to have wider usage. Hope this helps. * * Forwarded conversation Subject: [open-government] Standard Parliament transcript format? ------------------------ From: *ricardo lafuente* <bollecs(a)sollec.org> Date: Sun, Sep 11, 2011 at 8:41 PM To: open-government(a)lists.okfn.org Hi, Does anyone know of any standard or spec covering the formatting and structure of transcripts of sessions of Parliament? We've searched for quite some time without success. This is something that we have been discussing here in Portugal and believe it would be a great step to open yet another avenue where open data standards can make a difference. There are naturally hurdles in the process (e.g. country-specific rules), but it's a goal worth aiming for. If there's not anything being worked on, we'd love to begin drafting such a specification, and would welcome any advice or help in this effort. Anyone? :r ______________________________**_________________ open-government mailing list open-government(a)lists.okfn.org http://lists.okfn.org/mailman/**listinfo/open-government<http://lists.okfn.org/mailman/listinfo/open-government> ---------- From: *James Forrester* <jdforrester(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, Sep 11, 2011 at 11:17 PM To: open-government(a)lists.okfn.org There's Akoma Ntoso[0], which I've heard good things about but never got familiar with, let alone used.
