To: amaia.arcos(a)gmail.com Do We Deserve -- or Even Want -- More Jobs? [ Read this editorial on the LAUNCH blog: http://www.launch.is/blog/do-we-deserve-or-even-want-more-jobs.html ] By Jason Calacanis I've been thinking about jobs and people's careers constantly for the past five years, and I started writing this piece when I was at the lake on vacation last week. Since Obama talked about jobs last night, I thought I would hit the publish key. There are three reasons I've become obsessed: 1. The sad state of employment in the United States. 2. The widening gap in work ethic between people of my generation (Gen-X) and that of the generation right behind me (millennials). 3. My drive to see the folks who work for me advance quickly in their careers. Coming up in the '90s, I heard baby boomers lament the work ethic of Gen-X. I'm self-aware enough to understand that I am, at 40 years old, doing the exact same thing to the generation after me. However, I think we are facing a three-generation trend in work ethic deterioration. When wondering why we don't have jobs in our country, perhaps we need to examine our work ethic. Here's the trend as I've witnessed it: a) Baby boomers were willing to dress up professionally, shut up and work hard provided they got paid really, really well. And, oh yeah, they wanted to retire early and do something fulfilling after 60. They would stick with their jobs for 10 or 20 years, as opposed to their parents who did so for 30-50 years (in other words, baby boomers had three or four jobs in a lifetime). b) We Gen-X members wanted to be compensated well, sure, but more importantly we want to be heard and respected. We wanted to be able to maintain our individuality with simple gestures like dressing how we wanted (we created casual Fridays and "Reality Bites"), and more importantly by defining how we accomplished the tasks we were given. We wanted to work hard. But we didn't want to be micromanaged. It was really about empowerment, controlling our destiny and recognition. We would stay with a job for three or four years (in other words, 10 jobs in a lifetime). c) Millennials are not all the same. In fact, 25% are indistinguishable from Gen-X: They want to get paid, do their thing, not be micromanaged and be recognized for their accomplishments once and a while. I call these Gen-XYs at the office, and I LOVE these types. They have a healthy ego, they want to make money, they want to have a career and they want to, most importantly, work hard and make good stuff. They have the perfect balance of self-interest and selflessness. The other 75% of millennials/Gen-Y are really interested in developing their friendships deeply and experiencing as much cool stuff as possible! They are willing to go to work to pay their bills, but they don't want their careers to get in the way of their friendships and experiences. They are looking to stay at a job as long as it's interesting to them and as long as they are getting a ton of praise. They are willing to work at a job for a year. Or less. They have no problem with a resume that has five jobs in two years. In fact, I've seen 25-year-olds with resumes with more jobs than I've had -- and I've been in the work force three times longer! Why Many Millennials Don't Want -- or Deserve -- Jobs -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Many millennials not only don't want jobs, they simply don't deserve them. They can't take even a tiny amount of criticism and they need constant adulation for amazing efforts like, ummmm, showing up for work. A frequent refrain I hear from these folks is, "I've been working here for almost six months and you haven't recognized the work I've put in!" Of course my reaction to this is "Oh, I'm sorry, please tell me what you've accomplished." That is usually a short conversation which includes that the person came in and worked for the hours in which they were paid to work. In other words, they want the participation trophy. They want credit for coming to work for the hours they've been paid. That's not how it works in my mind, but I decided to relent. I had a trophy made for participation. It reads "for excellence in showing up." We have a tradition at the office of putting it on people's desks when they are on vacation so that they when they come back it's waiting for them as a reward for "excellence in showing up." The fact is, thanks to massive technological and organizational advances, the "just show up" job is a seriously endangered species. Companies are getting so efficient that they've learned that they can make better and more profitable products and services with smaller teams. This chart from Safework Inc. (via BusinessInsider), shows that in the past decade the profit per employee has increased by -- wait for it -- 50%. What this chart tells us is that companies would rather hoard cash and increase their bottom lines by not hiring folks. Work-ethic erosion has sent a strong signal to the corner offices in corporate America: A large percentage of Americans are simply not worth the trouble. In fact, what I've learned -- and I know many of my contemporaries have too -- is that many folks simply don’t want a job. If a large percentage of folks don’t want to work hard and would rather be hiking around Machu Picchu, well, perhaps we shouldn’t worry about 10 or 20% unemployment. Maybe the future of America is that half our citizens don’t have jobs by choice? The "Four Hour Work Week" is a huge hit for a reason: it plays off the classic device of getting more by doing less. Tim Ferris is a frackin’ genius. Instead of fighting the trend like I am, he’s indulging it into a hundred million dollar franchise. When interviewing young folks starting their careers I always ask: “Is there something else you would rather be doing than working here with us?” They look to me as if to ask “do you want me to answer that?” When they give me that look I say, “It’s okay, I won’t take it personally... you can tell me. What would you rather be doing?” This of course is me trying to get a read on folks. There is only one correct answer to this question when you are interviewing for a job: “No, there is nothing I’d rather being doing than helping you build a great company Jason!” {1} Most, however, take the bait. Their response is usually that they want to mountain bike across China’s Great Wall, or hike to Machu Picchu. I respect that, I would like to see those things I guess. Given the choice, however, I’d rather make history than simply take it in and post it to Instagram with a grainy old-fashion filter. The Gen-Y losers in this country want to explore and revel in the greatest accomplishments of mankind’s glorious history -- they just don’t want to try to participate in making history themselves. In Conclusion -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- If you want to work four hours a week and work on some cause-based project, go for it. Just realize that while you’re spending your 20s mooching off the little value left in mom and dad’s house, which is massively underwater, you’re going to be screwed in 20 years. Your parents are going to be broke, 80 years old and burning off the last of their savings in a retirement home. You’re going to be fighting for work and taking care of them. You will be sitting with $100K in student loans for a graduate degree no one cares about and a resume that reads worse than a migrant worker’s while you read the "Four Hour Retirement" at the four-hour line at the unemployment office. The person I do feel sorry for? The 29-year-old John, with two kids, who came to read my gas meter today. His union just lost the fight against installing gas meters with cellular phones in them that automatically send readings to the home office. He and 799 other gas readers are going to be installing these new meters in Los Angeles in 2013, and after that their jobs disappear. They are to be reassigned to other parts of the company and then those jobs will be gone. I’m fairly certain the city is lying to them and will simply lay them off during the next budget crisis. Those folks are desperate to have a pay check and could care less about seeing some decaying artifact from a dying culture. Those are the folks I’m worried about because they are going to be really pissed off and with good reason: they work hard, believe in the system and just want to provide for their families. When a person can’t provide for their family, they get reasonably creative -- and sadly in some cases desperate. Those folks aren’t begging mommy to advance their monthly stipend so they can ship $10K to Tim Ferris to hear how they can teach folks how to succeed with their new tomb, “The 40-Minute Work Week.” Did I mention I’m working on a new book called “The Four Minute Work Week”? In it I describe how you wait for a rich person to walk out of the Apple store to their car and put a horizontally aimed Glock in their face and say “Give me your f@#$%king Macbook Air beeeyotch!” http://www.cultofmac.com/armed-robbers-follow-houston-apple-store-buyers-ho… A permanent 20% employment situation could result in serious civil unrest. It might drive people to create a movement where people want to stop paying taxes http://theweek.com/article/index/200866/michele-bachmann-dont-pay-taxes , shut down the government, arm themselves to the hilt with weapons that are designed strictly for mass killings of other human beings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGfmVsmcHkE and obsess over immigration. I blame it all on Tim Ferris. Seriously. best, Jason For further fun watching and reading: My Gen-Y Rant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpuAggEyHfk A response to my Gen-Y rant from a member of Gen-Y http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHb7FoN7yXE {1} Note: there are multiple suitable interview responses. Some examples drawn from recent hires: "There’s only one thing actually. I would rather be working to serve you rather than working with you." "Well, if there is a way I could be put in a time machine and advance five years from now when you’re taking over the planet, I guess I would consider doing that. However, I’m torn because I really want to be part of fighting the good fight with you for the next five years." Re: [P2P-F] Automenta vs "The World Game" + Networks of Open Reciprocal Production

Dear Eric, I'm excerpting your fascinating discussion here below on our blog on the 20th, but it is not clear to me what netention is and a google search delivers a few competing, or at least not completely similar, pointers, would be nice if I could point to what you guys mean when using netention, Open Reciprocal Production, Resource-based economics and the World Game<http://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?p=19390> Tags: [empty] [image: photo of Michel Bauwens] Michel Bauwens 20th September 2011 *Eric Hunting* dives into the history of resource-based economics, in an online email to Dante Monson: *“The idea of netention systems, and especially the extension of that into that Global Survival System, seems a very promising and ambitious attempt to reduce to software the principles of Buckminster Fuller’s World Game and Jacque Fresco’s Cybernation. * *This notion has emerged a lot in contemporary Singular/Post-Singularity science fiction. The root concept is the elimination of financial paradigms in economic systems in favor of a demand-driven resource-based economics that is rooted in productivity and functional need and desire rather than a simplistic model of cost vrs. price. In the case of The World Game, Fuller was proposing a kind of mutualist gaming model; a game of poker where everybody wins. He developed this originally as an educational platform for global systems management and once proposed a university based on it. His Biosphere geodesic sphere built as the American Pavilion exhibit in Montreal for the ’67 World’s Fair was actually intended to be a World Game arena where the principles of The World Game would be explained and demonstrated in a live televised exposition. But no one in American government could even remotely grasp such an alien concept as resource based economics, and so The World Game was dropped from the expo proposal.* *Fresco re-imagined The World Game in the context of a kind of expert system software of massive scale. Fuller -in his 1950-60s context, imagined the role of computers in The World Game as data loggers, gathering a series of digital counters of world statistics. Early in the history of the Web there was an attempt to put The World Game on-line and the start of the project was a set of live digital counters for statistics about the world that were intended to be become ‘widgets’ people could ad to their own web sites. The project self-destructed because, shortly after Fuller’s death, idiots at the Buckminster Fuller Institute sold rights to all software based versions of The World Game to a fledging company seeking to make a touring show of it for schools. Fresco, aware of the early work in artificial intelligence, imagined a more autonomous system where a vast network of data gathering would feed global information to a massive expert system running on a central supercomputer whose adaptive rulebase would crafted by committees of scientists and constantly self-optimized in application on real world info and people’s needs. * *Dubbed Cybernation, this system would treat human demand for goods as the ‘currency’ in a resource distribution management that learns to anticipate and balance human and environmental needs and generates a plan for production and resource communication. Eventually it would be capable of managing and manufacturing by itself as production and transportation became increasingly networked and automated. Still, this is a somewhat anachronistic notion based on the 60′s era idea of centralized data processing on massive supercomputers tended to by a systems management priesthood trusted to employ scientific reason to the rulebase. Fresco may be right in considering science more rational than politics but he is too trusting of the intentions of scientists as a community. It’s by no means monolithic and exclusively rational. * *Curiously, the concept of Cybernation is the core of Fresco’s vision of a Post-Industrial economy but probably fewer than 10% of the members of The Venus Project or the recent Zeitgeist fandom have any notion of what this is exactly or how it would work or be created.* *In recent years a variety of science fiction writers have adopted the notion of cashless future cultures where social networking evolves into a replacement for financial and market systems. The basic idea is that a social credit system develops where one’s situation in the society – basically a dynamic metric of social worth based on accumulating reputation- determines one’s access to goods and resources above a dynamic common baseline defining the common reasonable standard of living. This is intended not to enable access to luxuries but as some sort of prize but rather to justify the access to goods and resources for individual and group projects and activities deemed of some value to the larger society. Like Fresco’s Cybernation, the suggestion here is of total automation and total resource awareness in an increasingly intelligent software platform. But instead of a system hosted on some old fashioned central computer, this takes the form of a network of distributed systems which, through social networks, permeate the fabric of people’s lives as well as the fabric of resource communication and planetary environmental sensing. So the result isn’t so much a single computer program as it is an Internet of Things with a very sophisticated but passive artificial intelligence. A neural network for the civilization.* *In my writings on this subject, particularly with P2P<http://p2pfoundation.net/ContactCon?title=Special%3ASearch&redirs=0&search=…>and in The Millennial Project 2.0, I talk about the establishment of networks of Open Reciprocal Production originating at a community level, running in parallel to old market systems at first, and merging into a progressively larger and eventually global network. The idea is of the technologies of independent manufacturing enabling and leveraging proclivity-inspired production and productivity on a model akin to publicly accessed web servers and Open Software projects which employ the Internet as a medium of demand-currency communication. This derives from P.M.’s notion of open production within the discrete community context. Because planned communities are hard to pull-off in a world dominated by the existing market hegemonies (tending to be marginalized and hampered in standard of living by being ostracized from urban/suburban areas and pushed to the edge of wilderness -particularly in the US), I’ve taken this to a kind of ‘insurgent virtual community’ where an Internet of Things can be established as a location-independent participatory infrastructure for individual life support that can supplement and whittle-away at market systems. * *Instead of an illegal Black Market, an insurgent Anti-Market or Alter-Market. One of the functions of the CIC concept in TMP2 is as a corporate ‘firewall’ between the outside market and the alternative economy within the collective communities of TMP which leverages the power of automated industrial scale exploitation of renewables -solar energy through OTEC and food through polyspecies mariculture- as a means to support its subsistence in its nascent stages of development. Basically, you’re creating -in the TMP context- this massive multinational corporation that looks to the outside world like any other giant corporation producing energy, food, and many other things but, within its communities and among its resident-shareholders, is cultivating an alter-economy as a social convenience.* *I find this Netention concept very interesting because this looks like a very deliberate attempt to create the kind of networked passive AI that would be the basis of this neural network of a civilization independent of any established production infrastructure. At some point that must be implemented, but here we’re seeing an attempt at a Semantic Web of Living developing in the social networking context that could become a foundation for a production/resource oriented Internet of Things, which in turn becomes the foundation of an Open Reciprocal Production network. And hence we would get that passive intelligent wholesale management of resources and production linked to the awareness of human beings as individuals. It’s sort of like having a globe-spanning Jeeves -a genius butler- integrated into/distributed throughout the built habitat that would obsolesce the contrivances of economics by its total passive awareness of needs, wants, and sustainable limitations and self-optimizing predictive abilities. It’s a breathtaking possibility.”* On Thu, Aug 25, 2011 at 4:33 PM, Dante-Gabryell Monson < dante.monson(a)gmail.com> wrote: > Following Thomas , then now Eric ( see mail below, which I briefly comment > ), mentioning it, > > I feel like sharing references to Buckminster Fuller's concept of > "The World Game"<http://www.google.be/search?sourceid=chrome&client=ubuntu&channel=cs&ie=UTF…> > : > > Role Play - Simulation Game > > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njoyT2EB9ow > > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8up1F_fpZ9g > > *Note* : I would like to include "Alternative Complementary Currencies" > into this game - or alternative hybrid transaction contracts which > themselves enable the visibility and further choice within various > relational dynamics emerging out of the various economic networks of > transaction contracts, hence enabling choices regarding resource allocation > and relational dynamics one wishes to support along directions in which to > orient interdependent economic networks : > > http://sharewiki.org/en/Transaction_Graphs > > http://p2pfoundation.net/Relational_Model_Typology_-_Fiske > > * > > These models are" : > > - Communal Sharing > > > - Authority Ranking > > > - Equality Matching > > > - Market Pricing > > * > > > /// > > I feel like bringing up some elements of Eric's interesting reply ( see > below ), > reply with which I feel my current approaches and intentional > strategies resonate with. > > including ( when applied to housing ) > http://tmp2.wikia.com/wiki/Utilihab_Project > > More below, via Eric > > ps : longer video with Fuller : > > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYtQ_-rpAUo ) > > ---------- Forwarded message ---------- > From: Eric Hunting <erichunting(a)gmail.com> > Date: Thu, Aug 25, 2011 at 6:13 AM > Subject: Re: Hi Eric - Ongoing Micro Housing Experimentation Projects ? > To: dante.monson(a)gmail.com > > > Please, feel free to share that info with anyone you think might find it of > interest. > > The idea of netention systems, and especially the extension of that into > that Global Survival System, seems a very promising and ambitious attempt to > reduce to software the principles of Buckminster Fuller's World Game and > Jacque Fresco's Cybernation. PUBLIC In a city, where myriad interests are often in competition at any given spot, “public engagement” is a slippery term that raises the important and oft-ignored question: Which public? Before the evaluation of urban tactics can begin, one must define the group or groups of people they are working to engage. As architects and designers develop tactics to address specific sites and conditions, how are they deciding which groups to orient their projects toward? Beyond that, how can various factors—demographics, geography, politics, et al.—change the way that different publics view and engage with different tactics? 2. EVALUATION In recent years tactical urbanism has moved from the fringe of architectural and urban design practice to the center. However, because these works often skirt the edges of activist art and nonprofit community organizing it is difficult to determine a project’s success in relationship to design, outreach, and influence over policy. As tactical practices shift to the mainstream, how do we evaluate and critique this diverse range of architectural actions and urban interventions? What belongs on a post-occupancy punchlist for best tactical practices? 3. TACTICS AND THE DESIGN PROFESSIONS As global political and social changes pressure how designers work, many practices are using their design skills to tactically confront environmental, political, and economic issues at all scales. Some of these tactical practices break with traditional disciplinary boundaries and expand the role of the designer. How is practice changing to tactically address environmental, social, and political issues in the built environment? What further changes are necessary to tackle these large problems with ever-decreasing funding? What steps should the profession take to address these contemporary pressures? 4. FAILURE Where does the notion of failure come from and why is it rearing its head again now? While failure might work in software and startups, what happens when we apply that ethic to interventions at the scale of buildings and cities? How can the fail-early-fail-often tactic be used for urban change—such as hackathons, or pilot programs like San Francisco’s parklets? Is failure related to the temporary or the long term? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "P2P-Urbanism World Atlas" group. to register to the group http://cityleft.blogspot.com/ To post to this group, send email to p2p-urbanism-world-atlas(a)googlegroups.com For more options, visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/p2p-urbanism-world-atlas?hl=en -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Arno And below is an review. My premimilary comment would first be that the concluding sections reference to the Western scientific reductionism indirectly points to the Western non-reductionist traditions. Secondly, the Western "universal values" of freedom, democracy, rule of law and free trade seems to me to be more than mythology. They may well have mascaraded an imperial pursuit, but that does not preclude their intrinsic values - both for the individual and as economic forces as such - for instance regarding anti corruptionary checks and balances, and as forgers of innovation. Best wishes! Arno http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t243048.html**** http://epublications.bond.edu.au/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1098&context=c… Review of John M. Hobson The Eastern Origins of Western Civilization, N.Y., Cambridge University Press, 2004, reviewed by Reg Little. Are we about to return to a global order similar to that which existed for most of the past two millennia, when Chinese civilization led the world - administratively, economically, technologically and medically? Is it possible that Confucian-Daoist, rather than Judeo-Christian, cultural norms will prove best suited to overseeing a global knowledge economy? In other words, will the period of Western leadership - or, more accurately of Anglo-American empire - prove to be but a brief 200 year historical interlude before China returns to a more traditional role? Is China likely to be again at the centre of the global trading system? Will China again produce an array of high quality products that Europe and America struggle to pay for through the value of their own production"? Will the West's universal values - democracy, rule of law and free trade - come to be seen as little more than the opportunistic, and rather hypocritical, inventions of a past imperial order? John M. Hobson's The Eastern Origins of Western Civilization offers many reasons, which are only marginally related to the contemporary rise of China and East Asia, to ask these questions. Simply put, history as it has been understood in the West has largely been a political invention. Andre Gunder Frank's 1998 publication, ReOrient: Global Economy in the Asian Age, which preceded Hobson's work by six years, sums up a variety of evidence, including the path-breaking work of a Japanese researcher, in the following terms: Thus, we can and should make an even stronger case than Hama$hita does: the entire world economic order was - literally - Sinocentric. Christopher Colombus and after him many Europeans up until Adam Smith knew that. It was only the nineteenth-century Europeans who literally rewrote this history from their new Eurocentric perspective. As Braudel observed, Europe invented historians and then put them to good use in their own interests and not those of historical accuracy or objectivity. The Eastern Origins of Western Civilization complements and builds on the insights of Frank, Braudel and others to illustrate in great detail both how substantial China's historical achievement has been and how much the West has distorted history to serve the purpose of its imperial civilizing mission: .....the Enlightenment was 'schizophrenic'. For its greatest paradox was that while it borrowed and assimilated Eastern (mainly Chinese) ideas these were then crafted into a body of knowledge that imagined the East as uncivilized and, in turn, led on to the imperial civilizing mission and the repression of the East..... The discourse created (largely unwittingly) a kind of intellectual apartheid regime in which the West was fundamentally segregated from the East by an imaginary borderline that stretched back in time to Ancient Greece. John Hobson's work is important because the West's deliberately distorted understanding of history and civilization may now play a role in its own marginalisation. How well placed are Western nations to adjust to a genuine cultural renaissance in the Confucian-Daoist world of East Asia? At almost all times in recent millennia China has had more people organized in one coherent, administrative order than any other political entity. Hobson shows how only in recent centuries has the West produced the wealth necessary to trade seriously with China. It was the later discovery of precious metals in the Americas by Europe that provided the West with sufficient wealth to begin to trade seriously with China. Indeed, without the formal institutional structures that are now seen as essential to international commerce, China was central to a global trading system that serviced large areas of the world until the early decades of the 19th century. While the European Enlightenment, as well as the European industrial and agricultural revolutions, learnt much from the Chinese example prior to the 19th Century, over the past two hundred years the imperial civilizing mission has ensured that many of the more profound aspects of Chinese civilization were, and continue to be, poorly understood in the West. The past two hundred years of vast material power in the West may come to be seen as a period also of tragic lost opportunity Many Chinese innovations and ideas, such as examinations and bureaucracy, were absorbed and legitimised before the 19th Century and became a tool for extending empire. What failed to make it in time was put beyond the reach of self-respecting, mainstream society and institutions. All recognition of Asia's contribution to Europe's transformation was constrained by the imperial civilizing mission's intellectual apartheid, which effectively ruled further intellectual exploration and discovery attributed to Asian sources to be politically incorrect. In a very important sense, this has led to the failure of the European Enlightenment, condemning it to forms of knowledge, science, industry and medicine that are beginning to prove both uncompetitive and unsustainable. The Eastern Origins of Western Civilization suggests both the brilliance and limits of the achievement of the Enlightenment. This work, which could almost be described as a chronicle of the persuasiveness and perfidy of European, or more accurately of Anglo-American, historians, clearly identifies 19th Century Britain as a 'newly industrializing country' or a 'late developer'. A chapter titled: 'The Chinese origins of British industrialization: Britain as a derivative late developer, 1700-1846' concludes with the words: In short, my global-historical-cumulative perspective of industrialization suggests that the conventional emphasis on the British industrial revolution as the place where, to quote Rostow, 'it all began', can now be seen as the product of a parochial Eurocentric mindset. We could, therefore, do little better than close with the words of Eric Jones: Once upon a time it seemed we had a definite event to learn about. Growth began with an industrial revolution in late eighteenth century Britain. Now we know quite surely that the event was really a process, smaller, far less British (and far more Eastern), infinitely less abrupt, part of a (world-historical) continuum, taking much more time to run. The above passages from Hobson's work more or less sum up his conclusions and sketch out some of their implications. Hobson has, however, explored in considerable detail the past fifteen hundred years. He shows the East as the early developer in a comparatively benign oriental globalization from 500 to 1800, the invention of Christendom as a medieval, reactive European response, and the mythology of the Europe's civilizing, universal values as little more than a necessary invention to market the West's determined imperial strategies. Hobson does not deny the remarkable character of this achievement but no more does he pull his punches in describing a British imperial project built on national protectionism, regressive taxation, interventionism, despotism and militarism. This leads up to a passage headed 'Racism, Industrialization and the moral contradiction of the British Imperial civilizing mission', which is followed by other headings such as 'The contradictions of imperial free trade: containment verses cultural conversion' and 'Racism and the commodification of the East: the Afro-Asian origins of British industrialization'. The latter explains the critical role of the slave trade and the empire's slave labour plantations in generating further wealth and capital resources that led on to advances in Asia. Of course, it would be naïve to indulge for a moment the thought that a grand empire could be built through the enlightenment of other people with democracy, the rule of law and free trade. Hobson does not make the case that the British empire was bloodier or more brutal than other empires. He does remind us, however, that it is the victors who get to write history and that that history is valid only so long as they remain victors. With this in mind the timing the work of Hobson, and before him Frank, takes on its true importance. After only a few years of the third millennium, a growing body of evidence suggests that the leader of the West, and contemporary globalism or Anglo-American empire, the United States, is under mounting challenge from East Asia in general and from China in particular. An abstract of an article in the July-August 2004 edition of the authoritative American policy journal, Foreign Affairs by James F Hoge and titled "A Global Power Shift in the Making" reads: The transfer of power from West to East is gathering pace and will dramatically change the context for dealing with international challenges. Many in the West are already aware of Asia's growing strength. This awareness, however has not yet translated into preparedness. Articles in the January-February 2005 Foreign Policy and the 24 February 2005 British Financial Times and books like Oded Shenkar's The Chinese Century: The Rising Chinese Economy and its Impact on the Global Economy The Balance of Power and Your Job and Ted C Fishman's China, Inc.: How the Rise of the Next Superpower Challenges America and the World, together with many others, have all explored related themes and reflect a growing preoccupation with this concern and an intensifying debate about responses to such a challenge. Moreover, Joshua Cooper Ramo has written a paper titled The Beijing Consensus, which highlights the fact that China is taking a path that makes it an attractive alternative leader for developing economies that have become disillusioned with the exploitative economic doctrines of the Washington Consensus. Hobson's work is valuable because it provides a timely reminder that there is nothing exotic or threatening about a world where China resides in 'inscrutable' authority at the centre. That, in fact, has been the reality for much of humanity's recorded history. The inscrutability has largely been a product of Anglo-American imperial disinformation and intellectual apartheid. In reality, the universal values - democracy, the rule of law, free trade - that have been marketed to the global community in recent decades are simply the political tools of an Anglo-American empire that is now threatened with decline after two hundred years of inventive expansion. The viability of such universal values remains dependent on the continuing authority of Anglo-American leadership. Hobson's concluding passages, titled 'The oriental West verses the Eurocentric myth of the West', poses the dilemma now confronting the West generally and Anglo-American empire in particular. The mythologies that are powerful weapons in the construction of an empire and its foundation beliefs also can become a source of vulnerability when history moves on and exposes the true character of those mythologies. Today, every time a serious commentator, like James F Hoge, raises questions about a major shift of power from the West to Asia, it should be understood immediately that this should also be an exploration of whether this goes beyond a simple shift in economic and political power. Does it foreshadow also a fundamental shift in dominant perceptions of mythological constructs, historical truth, cultural values and even scientific paradigms? Although Hobson does not directly address the issue, a return of the centre of the global trading system to China and East Asia might well involve a shift from the West's mechanical and reductionist sciences, which have so ravaged physical and human ecologies, to the East's more organic and holistic approach to science, which after all led the world prior to the 19th Century. Hobson's illuminating review of history does, however, remind the reader that the Anglo-American empire was constructed, like most earlier empires, on an aggressive spirit of conquest, over both humanity and nature. It also reminds us of the fact that China preserved a position at the centre of a global trading system for a long period, without the free trade subversions and assertions of the Opium Wars with which Britain undermined China's then political order. Reflections of this character are prompted by Hobson's revelations, even though they go beyond the scope of his book. The true value of The Eastern Origins of Western Civilization resides in its capacity to reveal the manner in which politically expedient mythology has distorted Western understanding of both history and culture. There will be a need for many more such exploratory books, if Western peoples and governments are not to totally misunderstand processes at work in today's global community and are not to allow sheer ignorance to disadvantage and harm them in times of difficult, but perhaps healthy, transition. After all, prior to the British use of the opium trade to undermine traditional authority, Chinese thought and behaviour had been characterised for more than a thousand years by a profound search for a disciplined, balanced, peaceful sense of political and human order. Indeed, for more than half of the past seven hundred years Chinese civilization was able to evolve, prosper and grow ever more resilient under foreign rulers - first the Mongols and then the Manchu. __._,_.___ Reply to sender<[email protected]?subject=Re%3A%20The%20Eastern%20Origins%20of%20Western%20Civilization%2Epdf>| Reply to group<[email protected]?subject=Re%3A%20The%20Eastern%20Origins%20of%20Western%20Civilization%2Epdf>| Reply via web post<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gang8/post;_ylc=X3oDMTJxNnFrN3JhBF9TAzk3MzU5N…>| Start a New Topic<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gang8/post;_ylc=X3oDMTJlbmtodjVzBF9TAzk3MzU5N…> Messages in this topic<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gang8/message/16147;_ylc=X3oDMTM2dHJvNnEwBF9T…>( 1) Recent Activity: - New Members<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gang8/members;_ylc=X3oDMTJmYzNqbzlrBF9TAzk3Mz…> 1 Visit Your Group<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gang8;_ylc=X3oDMTJlMjc0OHBtBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BG…> The gang8 list is devoted to Creditary Economics. (an appeal to better understand the) Institutional ecology of open hardware
by Michel Bauwens 11 Sep '11

Dear friends, Over the years it has been fairly easy to find material on the institutional set-up of free software and open content production, which usually combines a community with commons, a for-benefit association, and a enterpreneurial coalition as very common and identifiable structure However, even though I have watched the open hardware field, and there is some material on its business models ( http://p2pfoundation.net/Category:Business_Models) I feel there is a real dearth of material on the institutional setups .. So, we know there are productive communities and firms, but what about the equivalent of FLOSS Foundations? To put this in perspective, this area represents approximately 10% of the area devoted to growing soya in the US. Biohydrogen reactors use a method of photobiological water splitting which is done in a closed photobioreactor based on the production of hydrogen by algae. Algae produce hydrogen under certain conditions. thanks for responding to this question also via: http://p2pfoundation.net/Special:RecentChanges?title=Talk:Complete_Guide_To… Johannes asks: Regarding "*There’s a critical distinction here and that is that your code is out there and anyone can start a company to commercialize this code. Though I would prefer the donation model (instead of selling), because it offers the opportunity, that more people may use the software. In consequence the percentage of people willing to give can be lower to achieve a comparable earning. My question is: *are there examples of open code harvested by commercial developers*?
