Re: [P2P-F] monbiot on prosperity without growth - Guardian article

hi amaia, I hope you don't mind I share your interesting missives with our list, I understand your frustation, but you need bridge people who precisely because they are later in understanding, are more in touch with the broader movements of opinion, and can connect more effectively and translate the pioneers' understandings ... Being too early is always a problem in terms of influencing current events ... I remember Vinay Gupta being happy that he seemed only a few months of the curve, after having been ahead a few years before .. He left london 2 months before the outbreak of the riots ... sensing something was rotten in the kingdom, Michel On Tue, Aug 23, 2011 at 3:58 PM, Amaia Arcos <amaia.arcos(a)googlemail.com>wrote: > I've assumed you would come across this article as people are bound to rave > about it, but just in case you are busy with other stuff > http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/aug/22/economic-growth-environ… > > Monbiot seems to get more and more popular lately. > > Either I, together with millions out there, are visionaries or we live in a > paralel reality or the world is crazier than I thought. Fwd: BREAKING: Bill McKibben sent to jail -- and how you can help.
by Michel Bauwens 23 Aug '11

23 Aug '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Will Bates - 350.org <organizers(a)350.org> Date: Tue, Aug 23, 2011 at 3:52 AM Subject: BREAKING: Bill McKibben sent to jail -- and how you can help. To: Bauwens Michel <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> Dear friends, *We thought you should know that as of today over 150 people, including 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben, have been arrested at the White House. * Bill is just getting out of prison after spending 48 hours in a tiny cell -- and here in DC spirits are high and resolve is strengthening with each passing hour. For the past three days, large groups of Americans have joined a non-violent civil disobedience action at the White House. The goal is to send President Obama a simple message: “Stop the Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline.” These protests will continue over the next two weeks -- and what the activists in DC need more than anything is the knowledge that there is a massive global movement backing them up. <http://act.350.org/go/127?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=1> * <http://act.350.org/go/127?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=2>*** *There are three ways that you can stand in solidarity from wherever you are:* ***1. Sign the petition to President Obama to reject the Keystone XL Pipeline <http://act.350.org/go/127?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=3>* -- we’ve already rocketed past our initial goal of 35,000 signatures and are hoping to add as many names as possible before we deliver it to White House officials on September 3rd. *2. Send in a solidarity message<http://act.350.org/go/248?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=4> * or photo to the people taking action at the White House. *3. Take part in Moving Planet<http://act.350.org/go/77?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=5> * -- a worldwide climate rally on September 24 -- and move beyond all fossil fuels in the loudest, most beautiful way possible. *You probably know that building the Keystone XL pipeline is a terrible idea.* The oil it will carry from Canada’s tar sands will travel all the way from northern Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico. Think: oil spilling all over America's heartland. Think: way more CO2 all over the atmosphere, since the tar sands are among the most carbon-intensive of all the fossil fuels. With so many strikes against the Keystone pipeline, it’s understandable that folks are so fired up and willing to put their bodies on the line to stop it. 350.org <http://act.350.org/go/19?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=6> isn’t organizing the action in DC, but there’s a separate website to find out more about the two weeks of daily sit-ins at the White House<http://act.350.org/go/250?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=7>(today was just day #3). When nominated for President in 2008, Barack Obama promised that his administration would ensure “the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.” It’s not a protest I feel like I’ve been watching unfold here in DC -- but a big and beautiful reminder of that vision. With rising hope from DC, Will Bates for the 350.org<http://act.350.org/go/19?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=8>Team P.S. Our friends in DC just made an beautiful video about Day 1 of the action in DC -- click here to watch it<http://act.350.org/go/251?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=9>and be sure to share it with your friends on Twitter <http://act.350.org/go/252?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=10> and Facebook <http://act.350.org/go/253?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=11>. P.P.S. For an extra dose of inspiration, check out a few of my favorite photos from the protest: *Standing Strong on Day 3! You can join 350.org on Facebook by becoming a fan of our page at facebook.com/350org and follow us on twitter by visiting twitter.com/350. To join our list (maybe a friend forwarded you this e-mail) visit www.350.org/signup. To support our work, donate securely online at 350.org/donate. * What is 350? *350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Scientists measure carbon dioxide in "parts per million" (ppm), so 350ppm is the number humanity needs to get below as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change. To get there, we need a different kind of PPM–a "people powered movement" that is made of people like you in every corner of the planet. -- You can unsubscribe from this mailing list at any time.<http://act.350.org/cms/unsubscribe/unsubscribe/?akid=1200.360134.P-EW5M&t=1> -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: [Higher Education in the Global Age] Higher Education in the Global Age:
by Michel Bauwens 23 Aug '11

Daniel, feel free to also post in our ning blog, for further spreading of the word ... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Daniel Araya <notification+pjiidwm(a)facebookmail.com> Date: Tue, Aug 23, 2011 at 7:13 AM Subject: [Higher Education in the Global Age] Higher Education in the Global Age: To: Higher Education in the Global Age <261634263861149(a)groups.facebook.com> ** Daniel Araya posted in Higher Education in the Global Age<http://www.facebook.com/n/?groups%2F261634263861149%2F&view=permalink&id=26…> . [image: Higher Education in the Global Age: Education Policy and Emerging Societies Editors: DANIEL ARAYA & PETER MARBER Word length: 85,000-90,000 words. Description While globalization has been studied on many fronts, one less-researched aspect has been its impact on higher education. It is no coincidence that rising formal education has paralleled the expansion of the global economy. World supply chains have become increasingly dependent on communication technologies and skilled labor. As wealth has spread globally, more people have begun enrolling in colleges and universities than ever before, with record numbers crossing borders to study abroad. In advanced countries, universities are devising global strategies to attract foreign students and expand their reach. This includes overseas campuses, joint-venture partnerships and cross-border online education. In developing countries, policymakers are racing to produce world-class institutions to increase economic competitiveness. China and India, in particular, are strongly investing in education: Asia is already producing twice as many engineers as America and Europe together. The paradox of the economic boom in many industrializing countries, however, is that it has benefited a super-elite most of all. In the last few decades, many of the most classless societies in the global South have become increasingly polarized between the world's richest and poorest citizens. As part of the Routledge Studies in Emerging Societies series, this edited volume focuses on the rapid growth of emerging economies in the context of globalization and education. How are universities contributing to these trends? Are they helping to make emerging societies more egalitarian, or are they simply fostering an elite superclass? What should the role of higher education play in a globalizing world? How might information and communication technologies support education? And what might the university look like in the future? Part One Mapping Higher Education Part One examines the contours of higher education in a global age, mapping new educational configurations across emerging societies and the global South. Part Two Public Policy and Economic Shift Part Two considers the complex relationship between public policy and economic growth in the context of globalization and education policy. Part Three The Global University Part Three explores changes in the “Western” notion of the university in light of globalization and the growing importance of emerging economies. Deadline Essays submitted for the collection should be no more than 7000 words and submitted by March 1, 2012. It is essential that an Abstract (100-200 words) be provided with each essay. The author's name and affiliation should appear at the beginning of the article, together with full mailing and email addresses. in the context of the referral of Amaia, I wonder if you could not use pearltrees collectively, as opposed to my and our personal bookmark collections, for example, we could do a 'pearltree of the week' and embed it in our blog, agreeing on a common topic, we could have a rule of at least 3 people volunteering, before launching a pearltree on a particular topic? see http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/pearltrees_web_curation_made_sexy_with… -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens
