Dear Franco, this is a really important, in my view, 'must read' essay, even though from 2003, see http://p2pfoundation.net/Copyright,_Ethics_and_Theft COuld you serialize it on the p2p blog, in say 3 installments, starting on the first Monday after August 25? Fwd: “Harnessing Crowds: Mapping the Genome of Collective Intelligence“

http://cci.mit.edu/publications/CCIwp2009-01.pdf ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Aug 16, 2011 at 7:43 AM Subject: “Harnessing Crowds: Mapping the Genome of Collective Intelligence“ To: econowmix(a)googlegroups.com http://news.noahraford.com/?p=695 *large copied excerpts :* The MIT Center for Collective Intelligence <http://cci.mit.edu/> recently published an important overview of the theory and mechanisms behind successful crowdsourcing efforts. Their report, called “Harnessing Crowds: Mapping the Genome of Collective Intelligence<http://sloanreview.mit.edu/the-magazine/articles/2010/spring/51303/the-coll…>“, can be found here <http://cci.mit.edu/publications/CCIwp2009-01.pdf>. ( http://cci.mit.edu/publications/CCIwp2009-01.pdf ) ... According to the Center for Collective Intelligence, a good collective intelligence platform (CI) must address the following themes: ** 1. *Goals*, referring to the desired outcome; 2. *Incentives*, referring to the motivational factors; 3. *Structure/process*, referring to the business model and organizational structure to complete the task; and 4. *Staffing*, referring to the people required to support the business model and sustainability of CI within the organization. These four themes then translate into the following four questions: 1. *What is to be accomplished?* 2. *Why* should anyone help out? 3. *How* are they meant to contribute? 4. *Who* will perform the necessary work? *Figure 1*, below, illustrates how these four themes and questions interact to form the building blocks of any collective intelligence system. <http://news.noahraford.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Picture-1.png> Figure 1, the basic building blocks of a CI system *Developing a detailed decision tree* **This approach then asks a series of sequential, logical questions, the answers of which form specific guidelines for all CI systems: 1. Can activities be divided into pieces? Are necessary resources widely distributed or in unknown locations? 2. Are there adequate incentives to participate? 3. What kind of activity needs to be done? 4. Can the activity be divided into small, independent pieces? 5. Are only a few good (best) solutions needed? 6. Does the entire group need to abide by the same decision? 7. Are money or resources required to exchange hands or motivate decision? The answer to these questions comes in the form of specific “genetic” building blocks, such as the “Create” gene, the “Crowd” gene, or the “Decide” gene. The paper concludes with a detailed table listing these genes and how they interact with the questions above. In my own work developing online scenario planning systems<http://news.noahraford.com/?p=462>, I have found it useful to translate these questions into a flowchart that can be used to help navigate this process. This chart is presented in *Figure 2*, below, which presents each of these questions and possible answers in the form of a decision tree (full PDF by clicking on the image or downloading here <http://www.noahraford.com/files/CI_flowchart_raford.pdf>). <http://www.noahraford.com/files/CI_flowchart_raford.pdf> Figure 2, a flowchart for the design of any CI system -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Aug 16, 2011 at 7:44 AM Subject: "art of less" ? - list of all that guy has... To: aha ! I have less ;) But not necessarily better :-p Pasted below, approach I was interested in taking for myself, regarding gear ( though I wish to add documentation of its longevity - comfort - quality, ease or cost of repair, ... ) and that I found online from this guy : http://www.unv20.blogspot.com/ copy pasted from the page ... SATURDAY, 30 OCTOBER 2010 <http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7450/scan70003600px.jpg> I was featured in the Saturday Times Magazine today in an article entitled 'The Cult of Less". The author was writing about a few young people who are trying to live more minimal lifestyles. It was interesting to see how many different approches there are to this way of living, from living out of a suitcase and doing work online to simply enjoying minimalism as an entire way of life. I am trying to make all of my possessions fit into these two yellow crates. Some people, like this girl <http://minimalstudent.com/>, take the 100 things challenge<http://unclutterer.com/2007/08/08/the-100-thing-challenge/>, but I think it makes more sense to have a minimal lifestyle based on weight or volume. If you want to be able to move items in a car, make all of your possessions fit into the boot. If you want to live a nomadic lifestyle, make all of your possessions tally to a weight you can carry alone, like 30kg. The storage compartment in my microhouse is about 4ft square, so these two crates make a perfect volume for this storage space! Re: [P2P-F] Future of Free Cities conference
by Michel Bauwens 15 Aug '11

Thanks Amaia, there is interesting context in David De Ugarte's history of alt.sovereignities, at http://p2pfoundation.net/From_Nations_to_Networks Part two of the book has a fascinating history of 19th cy. Segregationist attempts, i.e. refusals of the nation-state such as Mormonism and alternative Zionisms, and of 20th cy. Libertarian and other microstates. Their common mistake is to want to ground alternative socialities in derivatives of imaginary nation-states. But early attempts at internet ‘societies’ like Freedonia are also failures, because they lack a viable shared economy, which coincides with the human network. Thus, after this vital and interesting history of post-national attempts, comes a very interesting passage: David de Ugarte et al.: “The Freedonia story represents the transition and continuity between the Randian segregationism and the new world of trans-national communities. The segregationist temptation appeared repeatedly in virtual networks in the second half of the nineties. It was the easiest option. When network life occupies the identitarian space and explains more about who we are and who we speak to than the nation, the immediate temptation is to replicate the national model, seeking a territory and building a customised micro-state. Segregationism was always there, underlying, inviting us to occupy a distant island or build a floating city where the real community can be accommodated and new forms of social organisation can be tried. And the myth of Mormon success is still powerful. But the 20th-century groups were no longer like 19th-century ones. Randian attempts are unlike those of the Mormons, a presential and real community. With their form of shareholders' society, Randian experiments resemble more the failed colonisation societies than John Smith's persecuted and cohesive religious parishes, where, despite their being more people, everyone knew each other, worked alongside each other, and personally trusted each other, generating, in so doing, an economic basis and emotional tries which were strong enough to support the gigantic efforts and sacrifices which proved to be necessary. Actually, when we think about it, Sealand, once the mythical layer of Cryptonomicon and Wired is stripped, is nothing but the adventure of a family of British squatters who kept some bad company. Freedonia, the first internet-era community that sought its own territoriality, was, in its naivety, both a forerunner and a frontier. Its scarcely 300 members led a real and intense political life. They built a conversation that provided them with an explanation and a meaning. They shared their daily lives and built a common identity which bound them together more than their respective national contexts. Briefly put, they constituted a trans-national community. But they never had an economic basis, a map, a common space between the conversation flows and their own way of making a living. It is true that a community can be based on collective conversation and the consequent political play. In an extended and interesting experiment51, Dutch ethologist Frans de Waal showed how a group of chimpanzees all whose members enjoyed unrestricted access to food not only preserved power structures, but experienced them more intensely than ever. Politics does not arise in politics as a result of scarcity: it is not only an organised struggle for the surplus, as Marx thought. It is there before and after abundance. But maintaining a conversation and social game does not equal supporting a human community. Beyond conversation, nothing generated the need or the possibility of a headquarters territory in Freedonia. There was no persecution forcing them to do so, not a prior economic activity among its members which justified their settling in a specific place. Randians likewise lacked both. That's why Freedonians and Randians sought their destiny from the settler's logic. Believing that the territory would generate its own economic structure, an economy hardly sketched out from libertarian principles which would ground a community which would not longer be trans-national or virtual but territorial. This is a mistake. … Segregationism fails. Without a shared economy, there is no human community which will endure in time. That's why unfaithfulness, transitoriness, and temporary alliances are, as Juan Urrutia points out52, common to all network conversational identities. After Freedonia, trans-national conversational communities evolved dramatically, both in number and in form. Some of them, like Second Life, included as an extra attraction a small parallel economy – which artificially produced scarcity – and a certain political space. But, for the time being at least, they are merely a game and a representation, a pastime and a simulation of a world which can already be intuited but which must come from elsewhere. New identities will only emerge when trans-national conversational spaces are superimposed onto economic spaces within a similar domain and they interact. On different scales, from the networks constituted by tens of thousands of Neonomadic individualists to the great corporate Venices, this is exactly what we are starting to see this decade, and what prefigures the forms of the great future postnational map.” (http://deugarte.com/gomi/Nations.pdf) On Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 8:58 AM, Amaia Arcos <amaia.arcos(a)googlemail.com>wrote: > https://freecity.ufm.edu/index.php/Videos_of_presentations > > I have no idea whether this is good or bad. Fwd: [fcforum] JessyCom, Draft III
by Michel Bauwens 15 Aug '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dmytri Kleiner <dk(a)telekommunisten.net> Date: Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 8:49 PM Subject: [fcforum] JessyCom, Draft III To: fcforum(a)list.fcforum.net Hey, I'd love to have comments and feedback on this current Telekommunisten project: JessyCom, a community mobilization platform. Some of us may remember our parents being part of a calling tree or phone tree while we where in school. Each Parent would have a list of a few other parents, when the school had a message, they would call the parents on top of the tree, who would then call the other parents on their list and so on, until the entire community got the message. Cory Doctorow, quoted by Becky Hogge in "Barefoot into Cyberspace," notes that "The main job of activist organizers prior to 1995 or so was stuffing envelopes and setting up phone trees [...] Mailman and Apache took 95% of the heavy lifting of the shoulders of activists" The JessyCom system is something like Calling Tree 2.0. The system was inspired by the fact that many residence of the Jessy Cohen neighborhood, where the system was launched, have infrequent internet access and little or no calling credit. JessyCom implements a variation on the "Random Phone Call" broadcast model to efficiently enable a community to share information by having the system call people and connect them to each other on the phone, creating an ad-hoc Phone Tree. For social movements operating in underprivileged or peripheral communities participation is made possible by the fact that only a phone that is able to receive incoming calls is needed, calling credit is not required in most countries where inbound calls are free. Internet access is not required. The mobile phone is by far the most ubiquitous technology on the planet, no other platform can hope to reach as many people. Conservative estimate of mobile phone usage indicate that 1 in 6 people globally have a mobile phone, while internet access is available to less than half that number. And yet, despite it's accessibility, a calling tree is not inefficient. Each tier of the tree grows exponentially from the size of the previous one, it remains a very fast and efficient system for getting information out to a lot of people. Since people often answer phone calls right away, but may not read email for some time, a community can be mobilized a lot faster. People also generally answer the phone far more often then they read bulk email, even when it comes from a wanted source. One of the applications that military organizations have used calling trees for is the rapid deployment of reserve troops. Social movements, also, could benefit from a system that can quickly deploy engaged supporters. When people of think of Flashmobs or Smart Mobs they generally imagine people using microblogging or SMS texting to organize, but telephone conversations facilitate such mobilizations even more efficiently. The impersonal nature of the email and web pages delivered by Mailman and Apache, results in more superficial and weaker links within movements. Supporters become more inclined to simply forward generic texts and links, and not often actually engage with each other to discuss and spread statements and calls to action. Participants becoming more focused on a nucleus of movement leaders, rather than each other. While Cory's claim that internet based organization eliminated 95% of the work of activists may well be correct. It also removed ways in which people could actually connect and engage with a movement. So movements have less people actively involved and more people passively involved. There is quite a large difference in focus and engagement between passing on a call to action by actually talking to a real person about it as a part of phone tree, vs quickly clicking "like" on a Facebook status update and hoping your friends will notice it. The JessyCom network broadcast model is based on conversations between real people. Feedback allows the person delivering the message to correct misunderstanding, etc, and even receive information from the personal they are calling. Relationships among people who have talked to each other are naturally stronger than among those email address is simply included on the same distribution list. Telekommunisten will continue to work with the Digital Art Lab to take the prototype developed as part of the Jessy Cohen Project and bring the platform to other communities looking for ways to engage and mobilize. Such communities are welcome to contact us to get involved. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Peter Koenig <pkconsulting(a)hotmail.com> Date: Mon, Aug 15, 2011 at 7:16 PM Subject: Money Seminar Peter Konig in Amsterdam, the Netherlands To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> Peter Koenig Enterprises Dear Michael, It's a few years since we were last in contact. You may recall, my approach to money is a little different to others interested in systems reform insofar as it sees the evolution of consciousness as the key element to advance these systems; and the transormative exploration of the relation to money as the key element to accelerate this evolution. Early next month I've been invited by Cees de Bruin to run a Money Seminar in Amsterdam for his meaningful-relations network. See http://www.moneyseminar.nl Although the seminar is primarily for this network it's open to interested others, so feel free to join if you wish and/or send the information on to any kindred spirits you think might feel drawn to join us. Very best to you, Peter PS. Very much enjoy the Innotribe video you took part in last October with the young people! Based on my extremely positive experience with the Zurich event, I have arranged for the money seminar to be held in our beautiful and historic location 'Amsterdams Welvaren<http://www.amsterdamswelvaren.org>' on September 3rd and 4th. It will be in English and I have invited many of my friends and their friends to join in. So, if any or all of you want to combine a trip to the Netherlands with a useful reenforcement of 'Peter's principle', you and/or those you care for are very welcome to join. (I will trow in a Cook Kai Thai meal as a bonus ;o)) In case you are tempted, go to www.moneyseminar.nl for more information. I trust you can appreciate the invitation and hope to see you again, either in Amsterdam in September or any time in the future.
