Fwd: The Pirate Who Wasn't: Inventor of P2P Gnutella Network

Unlike Fanning, he got his payday early in the game. In 1999, after WinAmp hit it big, AOL bought both it and Frankel's company, Nullsoft, for something in the neighborhood of $100 million. That made Frankel a very rich 20-year-old. It also made him an AOL employee. It wasn't a great match. With Nullsoft, Frankel's modus operandi had been to write the best software he could, then give it away for nothing. At AOL the business of selling software threatened to overwhelm the software itself. "The products that I worked on, it was very much like, We want to make *this * money out of this. We're doing this deal with *these* other companies, and so the product is going to do *this* as a result," he remembers. "No one cared about how users actually experienced it." Meanwhile, Frankel was writing Gnutella in his spare time. It was a brilliant hack: unlike Napster, it was genuinely distributed, with no central server and therefore no off button for the lawyers to push. He posted it online in March 2000 with a note: "See? AOL can bring you good things!" But reinventing Napster did not endear Frankel to AOL, a huge Internet company that was trying to merge with a major media company, Time Warner, that was in the middle of suing Napster. He left AOL in 2004. Then he did something funny: instead of glorying in the success of his creations, he walked away. He doesn't use Gnutella, and he never made a dime off it, even though 10 years later, LimeWire — the most popular Gnutella client — still claims 50 million users. "When I wrote it, it was primarily as a sort of, This is proof of what is possible. Let's not all go profit from it," he says. "So it made sense to not even have anything to do with it. It was more of a concept." Frankel, who recently moved from San Francisco to New York City, now works full time at his company, Cockos (don't ask), which is focused on an audio-production suite called Reaper. He constantly improves it, and he stays in close touch with his customers, who number in the tens of thousands rather than the millions.* "There's no goal of growing a certain amount or having an exit strategy," he says. "It's just about enjoying the process and doing the right thing." *He would certainly never describe himself as the world's most dangerous geek, as *Rolling Stone* did in 2004. "I don't see piracy as really being that dangerous," he says. "Ultimately, people who have business models that depend on strong controls for everything — those are flawed models. And I say that as a software developer, where there's a certain level of piracy." Gnutella is ancient history to him. "Digital piracy: Has it destroyed the music industry? No. Has the music industry had to adapt? Sure, and many would say for the better. You have people focusing more on quality, smaller bands, things like that." "As far as the big business of hits and pop music, did that suffer?" he continues. He shrugs and laughs. "I hope so." *Links* jTella, Gnutella for Java: http://sourceforge.net/projects/jtella/ FrostWire, Gnutella + Bittorrent App: http://www.frostwire.com/ gtk-gnutella, Gnutella for C++: http://gtk-gnutella.sourceforge.net/ *See Also* http://evolvingtrends.wordpress.com/2011/08/11/open-letter-to-anonymous-lul… ╭━━╮━━╮━━╮━━╮┏┓┄┏╮ ┃╭╮┃╭╮┃╭╮┃╭╮┃┃┃┄┃┃ ┃┃┃┃┃┃┃┃┃┃┃┃┃┃╰━╯┃ ┃┗┛┃┃┃┃┃┃┃┃┃┃┗━━┓┃ ┃┄┄┃┃┃┃╰╯┃┃┃┃╭━━╯┃ ┗┛┗┛┛╰╰━━╯╯┗┛┗━━━╯ #ANONYMOUS #TwitterArt ✔❤☼ http://idibidiart.com -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Introducing the T-corporation
by Kevin Carson 12 Aug '11

12 Aug '11

Sent to you by Kevin Carson via Google Reader: Introducing the T-corporation via In defense of anagorism by n8chz on 8/4/11 T as in transparent. How transparent? Transparent enough to satisfy Transparency Extremist: Every ledger, every account, every transaction held or made by a transparent corporation should be open and auditable by the world. Commercial confidentiality be damned: we have a right to know. I propose a “soft anagorist” approach, making this level of disclosure voluntary rather than mandatory, since mandates violate other cherished principles. For this purpose, we need only invent a new category of business—a new paradigm in organizational design—which we’ll call the transparent corporation, or T-corporation. An example of such a planned paradigm shift is the B-corporation, or for-benefit corporation. The purpose of the B-corporation appears to be to serve as a platform for triple bottom line accounting. The purpose I am proposing for the T-corporation is absolutely maxing out financial disclosure, all the way down to the transaction level, and disclosure thereof not only to stakeholders, but to the world at large; the public record. One obvious casualty is even the pretense of privacy. I myself consider privacy a lost cause, but when introducing new ideas, objections must be overcome. To that end, I propose a minor kludge in the interface from the journals to the public record. For journal entries documenting cash flows to or from individuals, the name of the party is overwritten with the designation “an individual.” These individuals will not be numbered or otherwise differentiated in the public version, to allay fears of probabilistically inferring the identity of unnamed individuals through pattern recognition. In summary statements derived from the public journals, perhaps the sum total of transactions with individuals could be labeled as transfers to and/or from the “social domain,” which is to say, the world of humans. An example of this concept minus the “privacy policy” would be the OpenBusiness license as proposed by ixnaum. OpenBusiness might be a good way for those of us who are informational exhibitionists to volunteer information. Once a T-corporation or OpenBusiness has been established, it might adopt a standard operating procedure of seeking out others of its kind and preferentially doing business with them. This incorporates the “closure seeking” property of Angel Economics. With a sufficiently large and sufficiently “tight” network of T-corporations and OpenBusinesses, it should be possible to shed some serious light on large portions of the supply chain. There are a number of ways in which the establishment of several T-corporations might serve the cause of anagorism. One is by putting the strong efficiency hypothesis to the empirical test, particularly expanding its application to the world of tangible goods, rather than the sterile world of the markets in commercial paper. If price signals are anywhere near as strong an attractor as is claimed, there should be about the same amount of variation in prices among deeply transparent vendors as among conventional enterprises. Even if the results of that experiment turn out not looking good for anagorism, perhaps the cause of agorism can be advanced. If the obliteration, at least locally, of information asymmetry (pdf!) can be effective, the market economy should in theory be more competitive; closer to the agorist ideal. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Chris McPhee <chris.mcphee(a)osbr.ca> Date: Wed, Aug 3, 2011 at 10:21 PM Subject: August Issue of OSBR Available + Important Announcement To: Chris McPhee <chris.mcphee(a)osbr.ca> Dear Readers, The August 2011 issue of the OSBR is now available at osbr.ca. For this issue of the OSBR, we issued a general invitation to authors to submit articles on the topics of open source business and the growth of early-stage technology companies. Anthony Casson and Leslie Hawthorn from Oregon State University describe the Open Source Lab, which is home to many of the world's leading open source projects. They describe the benefits the lab provides to the projects it supports and the real-word experiences and educational opportunities it provides to its student employees. Tyler Mitchell, Executive Director of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo), examines social interoperability as a parallel capability to technical interoperability. Using OSGeo as a case study, he highlights the importance of effective communication and relationships in enabling innovation within open source projects. Sandro Groganz, Co-Founder of Age of Peers, shares insights into the structures and relationships of vendor-led open source ecosystems to highlight the business strategies available to partners. Tony Wacheski, CEO of Anystone Technologies, shares the lessons he and his co-founder learned during their first year as entrepreneurs. He describes the company's first applications and the valuable development, marketing, and sales experience they provided. In the final article, I look back at four years of the OSBR and describe upcoming changes that will see the publication become the Technology Innovation Management Review starting in September. I describe how the OSBR started in July 2007, the knowledge gap it hoped to fill, and the diversity of topics and authors that filled its pages over 50 issues. Finally, I describe the new publication's broader scope, which formalizes a shift that has been gradually occurring over the four years of the OSBR. In September, we look forward to the first issue of the Technology Innovation Management Review. We welcome your feedback and invite you to submit articles on the topics of managing innovation, entrepreneurship, open source business, economic development, or the growth of early-stage technology companies. Please contact me (chris.mcphee(a)osbr.ca) if you are interested in submitting an article for the August issue. Kind regards, Chris McPhee Editor, Open Source Business Resource http://www.osbr.ca If you no longer wish to receive email notifications from the OSBR, please send your request by email and I will unsubscribe you. ________________________________________________________________________ Open Source Business Resource http://www.osbr.ca/ojs/index.php/osbr -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Sloterdijk and P2P Urbanism
by Geo Scripcariu 11 Aug '11

11 Aug '11

Hi All, Does anyone know any possible link between Peter Sloterdijk's (relatively recent) trilogy ("Spheres") and P2P Urbanism? Best regards, Geo P.S. I had a chance to interview recently Radu Radoslav in Timisoara (Western Romania). I was greatly impressed by the fact that Radu had one of the books of Alexander placed in front of him, like a sort of guide. Many thanks, again, to Michael for suggesting me to get in touch with Radu. I will try to translate in English my interview with him, in case any of you is interested. He asked me to convey to the group his greetings and his kind request to be accepted as member (raduradoslav(a)gmail.com) Michael, could you kindly let me know who your other friends of yours -- acquainted with the work of Alexander -- from Cluj and Bucharest are? -- Geo Scripcariu PhD Student Open Source Urbanism UAUIM Bucharest Mobil: +40745-09.61.91 Direct: +4031-401.29.42 Tel/Fax: +4021-410.54.15 E-mail: geo.scripcariu(a)gmail.com Str.Sabinelor 123 Bl. 119 Suite 16 Bucuresti-5 050854 Romania
