More than 4,500 people from 120 countries joined in the first three weeks. That probably makes the WEA already the world’s second largest association of economists. It shows how much demand there is for a truly international and inclusive professional association. Nearly 400 people have made donations. We are most grateful for these. They now total over £10,000, a sum which will enable us to set up a web infrastructure for the journals and conferences. Although our work at recruiting members continues, we are now focusing on getting the journals and conferences up and running. We are in the process of recruiting editorial boards for the World Economics Journal, Economic Thought and the Real-World Economics Review, as well as five-person editor teams for the first two. We aim to complete this process within a few weeks. We will let you know as soon as the journals and the associated discussion forums for working papers are operational, so that you can submit your papers. Guidelines on journals and conferences will be posted soon on http://worldeconomicsassociation.org/. We are also in the process of setting up the procedures for conferences. We will inform you when this is completed, when the first conference is scheduled and when members who want to organize a conference can submit their suggestions. We are also setting up an Ethics Committee to draw up a code of professional conduct for WEA members. Peter Radford, who is based in New York, will chair this committee. We very much welcome your suggestions and comments. Please send them to contact(a)worldeconomicsassociation.org But please understand that we are under-resourced at the moment. So it may take us a while to answer, and if mail volume should be high, we may not be able to answer all your emails. But we will certainly read all your comments and suggestions and think about them. We intend to bring the WEA membership up to a much higher number than it is already. After the new journals and conferences are operational, the number of members should increase spontaneously. But in the meantime, to maintain momentum and to attract attention from world media, we want to see the number of WEA members increasing month by month. This will depend primarily on you, the first WEA members, spreading the word. We will be emailing you from time to time. FeedBlitz, the emailing service that we are using, requires on this, our first email to you, the message which you will see below ours. It is an anti-spam measure. I have snuck our message inside of theirs (that is why there is that piece of code at the top) so that you receive only one email rather than two. On behalf of my co-organizers, Peter Radford, Norbert Häring, Grazia Ietto-Gillies, Vicki Harris, and Valerie Radford, I thank you for your leap of faith in joining the WEA in its first month of existence. Fwd: Complexity Demystified

perhaps of interest ... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Michelle Smith <admin(a)triarchypress.com> Date: Thu, Jun 9, 2011 at 8:04 PM Subject: Complexity Demystified To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Dear Michel, *"For every complex problem there is a solution * *that is simple, neat and wrong"* H.L.Mencken The word complexity gets used at every turn by politicians, policy-makers, managers, community leaders and so on, usually as an excuse for making a poor decision or for reaching only a partial solution to a problem. The trouble is: - By default, we tend to look for simple linear solutions to problems - Linear approches always reduce or avoid the complexity of an issue - Complexity, by its very nature, can't be *managed* or *solved* Management thinkers have turned to complexity theory for a new methodology that takes account of our interconnected and rapidly changing environment. * But,* *when it comes to putting the theory into practice, much of it can feel about as clear as mud*. According to Patrick Beautement and Christine Broenner, complexity practice isn't rocket science. By demystifying the theory, their practical Approach gives us the confidence to take *2 key steps*: *Step 1: to **embrace* complexity rather than try to solve or avoid it. *Step 2:* to understand and apply familiar terms like emergence, co-evolution, self-organisation, the edge of chaos, etc. in our work and daily lives. *Complexity Demystified*<http://www.triarchypress.com/pages/ComplexityDemystified.htm> presents a clear Framework for applying a range of complexity techniques. *Part 1 *of this 2-part Guide evaluates and explains: - the utility and limitations of academic complexity - how to be positioned, by design, to be adaptive and able to engage with constantly evolving situations - how to engage with dynamic phenomena on the fly - how to use their Approach and Framework for 'putting complexity to work' In *Part 2 *the practical application of the Approach is then considered in relation to six case studies. Each case study explains how to understand and work with the underlying complexity of that particular context. The book is written for managers, project managers, team leaders, 'change leaders', strategists, policy makers and concerned citizens as well as university students from a broad set of disciplines. Read more about *Complexity Demystified *and save £7.00 if you buy it.<http://www.triarchypress.com/pages/ComplexityDemystified.htm> Thanks for reading, Michelle Smith ========== *About Triarchy Press* Triarchy Press <http://www.triarchypress.co.uk/pages/triarchy.htm> is an independent publisher of books and pamphlets, focusing on organisations, how they work and the way we work in them. admin(a)triarchypress.com ~ www.triarchypress.com * <http://www.triarchypress.com/pages/ComplexityDemystified.htm>* *Foreword by* *Professor Brian Collins, Chief Scientific Advisor, Uk Department for Transport and Department for Business, Innovation and Skills* ... Practitioners who are engaged in dealing with complex issues across diverse domains and contexts will find this book illuminating, thought provoking and most of all useful - in guiding them to... understand and then exploit that understanding for greater purpose... It should be on the bookshelf of anyone seriously engaged with any complex issue." *Patrick Beautement has over 25 years experience of implementing innovative studies and high-profile evaluations for government, academia and commerce. He has been lead facilitator for a set of UK government sponsored workshops involving practitioners.* *Christine Broenner has worked with practitioners in many domains and in international research and educational institutions. Fwd: A Brief History of the Corporation: 1600 to 2100

I don't really get that article, so any summary of the main thesis would be most appreciated, Michel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tom Crowl <culturalengineer(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Jun 9, 2011 at 8:19 PM Subject: A Brief History of the Corporation: 1600 to 2100 To: A fabulous article! More than merely a well-researched overview of the history of the corporation... but an essential perspective for understanding current trends and where they are going. A Brief History of the Corporation: 1600 to 2100<http://www.ribbonfarm.com/2011/06/08/a-brief-history-of-the-corporation-160…> by VENKAT on JUNE 8, 2011 *From the piece*: * It will be the dawn of the age of Coasean growth. Adam Smith’s fundamental ideas helped explain the mechanics of Mercantile economics and the colonization of space. Joseph Schumpeter’s ides helped extend Smith’s ideas to cover Industrial economics and the colonization of time. Ronald Coase turned 100 in 2010. He is best known for his work on transaction costs, social costs and the nature of the firm. Where most classical economists have nothing much to say about the corporate form, for Coase, it has been the main focus of his life. Without realizing it, the hundreds of entrepreneurs, startup-studios and incubators, 4-hour-work-weekers and lifestyle designers around the world, experimenting with novel business structures and the attention mining technologies of social media, are collectively triggering the age of Coasean growth. * *And I'd add for consideration:* It's just possible that facilitating and unburdening the peer-to-peer micro-transaction (especially in certain areas) and its networking is an essential element for what is so aptly described here as Cosean growth? Particularly under some form of 'user-owned' utility rather than either a typical corporate or governmental structure. *Tom Crowl* (818) 363-0775 http://CulturalEngineer.blogspot.com -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

The Revolution Business - the staged "Arab Spring"
by David Rose 13 Jun '11

13 Jun '11

This new video about the staged nature of the "Arab Spring" looks interesting. I love the bit about the fake video game created by the CIA, on how to start a revolution. As the V/O says: "today, young people don't like to read books". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpXbA6yZY-8& http://www.journeyman.tv/ The Revolution Business "Democratic change has been demanded across the Middle East. But was what seems like a spontaneous revolution actually a strategically planned event, fabricated by 'revolution consultants' long in advance?"
