Fwd: [CommonGood] Relaunch of Global Social Justice
by Michel Bauwens 05 Dec '18

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Francine Mestrum <info(a)globalsocialjustice.eu> Date: Tue, Dec 4, 2018 at 9:24 AM Subject: [CommonGood] Relaunch of Global Social Justice To: <commongood(a)listi.jpberlin.de> Dear friend, We may be long time friends, or we may have met at some international conference or social forum. At any rate, you were on my list of people to contact as soon as the website of Global Social Justice was relaunched. This moment has now finally arrived: take a look at http://globalsocialjustice.info <https://globalsocialjustice.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4e78ad6c59c24…> You will notice the change of name: the old website still exists and has all old articles and research on it, but it has been irreparably damaged by repeated hacking. In case you do not know Global Social Justice: we are a global network, founded around 2005-2006 and have been steadily growing till around 500 members on all continents. Our work concerns social justice. We have been developing a concept of social protection that is emancipatory and transformative, that is a policy which contributes to system change. Because to us, the links between social protection, climate justice, macroeconomics, democracy and peace are very clear. Our aim is to identify the different elements that make up for these links and to achieve not only global social justice but also the social and political change our world needs so badly. We are therefore now launching this new website. It is closely linked to other initiatives that were taken these last years: a project around social commons, which is nothing else than a participatory and democratized version of a broad social protection. Most of all, we are proud to have launched a Global Charter for Social Protection Rights. It was adopted at the 12th Asia Europe People’s Forum end of September 2018 in Ghent, Belgium. At the international level as well a lot has happened. The ILO is very committed to promote its social protection floors, many ngo’s are working on the implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. And on the ground, more and more people and social movements are fighting against austerity policies, against privatisations, against the erosion of their economic and social rights. We continue to believe that the abovementioned international initiatives are very positive. If implemented, they would mean a tremendous progress for humanity. All the same, we think that social ,movements need to develop their own agenda, for several reasons. First, we should not only fight for things that have already been given to us. Social protection floors and sustainable development are urgently needed, but what these programmes say is exactly what the global dominant groups accept to give us, and not one point more. And we need more if we want to achieve social justice. Secondly, we should fight for the priorities of people on the ground, we need an agenda that comes from the grassroots so as to really respond to the needs of people. Thirdly, we should know who our enemies are, and they are not only the advocates of neoliberalism anymore. We are now also faced with right-wing populism and these people do want some kind of social protection, but not the kind we want. Whereas neoliberals will want to privatize and deregulate in order to achieve a social protection at the service of growth and markets, right-wing populists will want to defend so-called ‘traditional values’ and this does not lead to emancipatory policies. That is why we are very proud that at the 12th Asia Europe People’s Forum, end of September 2018 in Ghent, Belgium, we adopted a Global Charter for Social Protection Rights. This is not a binding text, but a kind of guideline for all people who want to work on social justice. It is a document with general principles that can give meaning to the specific needs of people, so as to build an emancipatory and transformative agenda. And what we mean by this is that people should be made free and contribute to the social change our world so urgently needs. We truly believe social protection can help to bring this about. These are also the points that we will work on in the future: develop the concept of social commons, which is nothing else than a participatory and democratized version of social protection; develop and identify the links from social protection to environmental policies, to democracy and peace, and certainly also to alternative macro-economics. It is a long-term agenda, but we have found in the Asia Europe People’s Forum and in the World Social Forum friends and allies who will work with us. This gives courage and is very motivating. *We do hope you are interested in the news we have to bring and the work we are doing. Please confirm by answering to this e-mail. If you, do not want to receive our messages, please also let us know.* We very much hope we can develop a long term relationship around social justice, especially starting in 2019 at the centenary of the ILO which stated in its Constitution of 1919 that ‘sustainable peace is not possible without social justice’. We think this message is as relevant today as in was one hundred years ago. Meanwhile, a great new episode of Team Human went up this morning <https://teamhuman.fm/episodes/ep-113-jamie-cohen-the-commodity-of-authentic…>, with Jamie Cohen talking about how Youtubers adapt themselves and manufacture authenticity to maximize views. My monologue on the show, about how we all became Russia's "useful idiots", was adapted into a piece on Medium and I've pasted it below. Please feel free to forward this email to others who may be interested in Team Human or my stuff. Thanks for caring! d *How We All Became Russia’s ‘Useful Idiots’* *Nationalism may have started as a side effect of fake news, but it’s quickly becoming the new American way* by Douglas Rushkoff The New York Times recently ran one of the most compelling and informative documentaries I’ve seen since Adam Curtis’ mind-blowing Century of the Self series. “Operation Infektion,” as it’s called, is a tragically, egregiously underpublicized and difficult to access trio of 15-minute videos — either lost to the ineptitude of the Times web staff or simply buried in the torrent of other daily news and treasonous revelations. The films chronicle the Russian effort to spread conspiracy theories in the United States since the 1980s, beginning with the planted story in an Indian newspaper about the AIDS virus being concocted in a U.S. military lab, right through the story about Hillary Clinton running a child sex ring out of the basement of a pizzeria — which turned out to have no basement. The movies show how 85 percent or more of Russian intelligence activity and budgeting went to promoting fake news stories in the United States. Intelligence agents’ yearly review focused primarily on how many ideas they came up with for conspiracies and how many they were able to get picked up by dupes, called “useful idiots,” such as Alex Jones and Sean Hannity. The possibility that a U.S. president would retweet such planted stories, or even repeat them in his speeches, was beyond their wildest hopes. For anyone confused about or, worse, still doubting the Russian exploitation of Donald Trump’s campaign to sow division in the United States or of the campaign’s infiltration by Russian operatives, from Marina Butina to Paul Manafort, the videos are must-see TV. But they’re less important for their indictment of Trump and the agents he hired than for how they expose the way we all continue to buy into this manufactured animosity. So, no, the liberal elite did not infuse the landscape with today’s more belligerent forms of identity politics. Neither did the far right invent the most contagious conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton or George Soros. They are the result of four decades and hundreds of millions of dollars of targeted disinformation by Russia. Even more damaging than the stories themselves is how they make us feel about the “other side,” who we believe has stooped to this level of shameful lying and rhetoric. (And, as the metrics indicate, those of us who are outraged by a sick tweet are just as likely to spread it as those who agree!) More important, though, is that this half-century Russian effort — and its embrace by the current administration — reveals more than a shared love for fake news. Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump also share the opinion that the United States’ influence over the world, and its attendant responsibilities, have become too great. Just as the Soviet Union fell in the 1980s under Mikhail Gorbachev and George H.W. Bush, Pax Americana should be dismantled under Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, or so goes the theory. >From the Russian perspective, it’s just tit for tat. The former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics collapsed in no small part due to economic and political pressure from United States throughout the Cold War. When the Soviet Union fell, George H.W. Bush was actually careful not to gloat. He likely understood that a vengeful Russia would be a dangerous Russia. For just as we helped break up the Soviet Union into Moldova, Estonia, Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, and so on, Russia had its eye on undermining the European Union, breaking up NATO, and leaving its member states isolated and beyond the influence and protection of the United States. Although Gorbachev was a moderate, the KGB under Putin continued its massive campaign to launch conspiracy theories in the West. As Putin rose to power, his efforts became better funded. It may have looked ridiculous at the time: The best that Russia could do to challenge the United States’ global power was to spread conspiracy theories on late-night radio? But Russia was playing a long game: Identify the existing disagreements and hot-button issues in the U.S. population and amplify them. Russia targeted like-minded communities — from gun owners and Christian fundamentalists to black activists and anti-war organizers — with extreme versions of their own beliefs and sensationalist lies about their opponents. With the advent of social media, it became even easier to speak to one community, enrage its base, and turn opponents into inhuman enemies. Many protests and counterprotests over the past year were actually convened not by domestic activists but by Russian bots. And all this effort had nothing to do with the issues at stake but were simply to get Americans to a place where we no longer know what to believe. In the words of one of the former KGB agents running the effort, the idea was “to change the perception of reality of every American to such an extent that despite an abundance of information, no one is able to come to a sensible conclusions in the interests of defending themselves, their families, their communities and their country.” All this effort was intended to divide the U.S. empire — the United States, Europe, and its various allies — back into separate, self-interested nations. In the resulting landscape of individual countries, Russia would be relatively bigger and more powerful. It worked even better than Russia planned. Not only is one of their most trustworthy conspiracy theorists in the White House, but also the United States is seriously considering isolationism as a national policy. Thanks at least in part to these campaigns, we have a president and a significant portion of the population who believe the United States is better off as a separate country, unencumbered by obligations to the alliances we established after World War II. It’s not simply that we are too busy fighting one another to defend ourselves from the rest of the world; we are now actively pursuing stronger boundaries and withdrawal from global pacts from the Paris climate agreement to the TPP and WTO. Rather than trace this isolationism back to the propaganda and fake news that spawned it, we must now engage with nationalism in its own right. This is the way many Americans (and, by the same process, Brexiters) now feel, and it almost doesn’t matter why or how they came to feel this way. A smaller, less influential United States is attractive in a lot of ways. It may not work so well for growth-based capitalism, which has always depended on expansion into new markets, but that could force positive changes in extractive corporatism. It also relieves the United States of the short-term expenses of protecting other people in other places. There’s a certain shame in standing by while people in China, Russia, Myanmar, or the Middle East are oppressed. But humanitarian crises are not the responsibility of a nation going it alone. “America first” doesn’t mean we can’t help other folks, just that we remove the plank from our own eye so we can see clearly enough to remove the speck from our brother’s. It would be nice to think that Putin is simply encouraging us to accept our place in a new brotherhood of equal nations. But the problem with the United States’ retreat from the global stage is that Putin is advancing. Sure, he wants us to be a divided, paranoid, and self-obsessed nation — but only so he can pursue his own expansion into Ukraine, Syria, Iran, and beyond. While the United States dismantles its global apparatus, Russia will restore its own. If the United States truly wants to adopt a less interventionist foreign policy, it should do so — but not for the wrong reasons. There’s a difference between empire and alliances. NATO and the United Nations are not extensions of the U.S. empire, but rather compromises made in the interest of a peaceful global order. If anything, maintaining a nation’s economic and military security without such alliances is harder and more expensive. Worse, if the United States really does retreat into nationalism, exit its trade blocs, and dismantle its strategic alliances, the rest of the world will be left to negotiate arrangements with Russia and China instead—countries that prefer domination over alliance. This is where our constant state of distraction and infighting may prove debilitating. We are so ready to see our domestic adversaries as Russia would paint them that we are losing sight of who is turning us against one another, how they want us to respond, and what they mean to do after that. -- Douglas Rushkoff http://rushkoff.com Founder, Laboratory of Digital Humanism and Professor of Media Theory and Digital Economics, CUNY/Queens Team Human <http://teamhuman.fm> - the podcast! Those willing to present their papers are invited to submit their proposals following the GUIDELINES FOR PRESENTER CANDIDATES described in the call for papers. The conference call for papers lasts from November 1, 2018 to January 31, 2019. The selected proposals will be communicated to their authors between December 2018 and February 2019. *INTRODUCTION* *The twenty-first century is emerging as the Asian century. During the first half of this century, the Asian region, extending from the Pacific Ocean to the Arabian Sea and northwards, to include Central Asia, is likely to establish itself as the new centre of the economic universe. This will draw to a conclusion three centuries of Western dominance over the world economic resources and for much of this time, its political spaces. This transformation in the world economic order will not be painless either for the East or for the West. Indeed, the transition has the potential for causing much grief to the world as no established order is likely to cede its hegemony without challenge.* *The significant point of departure during this phase of transition lies in the fact that the receding economic power of the West (also more broadly classified as the North), dominated by the United States (US), remains and is likely to remain in the immediate future the dominant military power. Historically, the dominant political power, whether it was Rome, Britain or the US was, within its own spheres of influence, also the dominant military as well as economic power. This erosion of the economic power of the West while retaining military dominance with the US and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies, does not bode well for an easy transition for the global order. * *[…]* *How the established powers of the West, led again by the US, will react to this changing balance of economic power towards Asia, which has narrowed their competitive space and domestic employment opportunities, remains a challenge for the leaders of the Western world. How far the hitherto dominant West will go to preserve their hegemony over their economic order remains critical in determining whether the Asian century will evolve peacefully or through a process of turmoil. *(Rehman Sobhan, *”The Political Economy of the Asian Century”* in Manoranjan Mohanty, Vinod C. Khana, Biswajit Dhar (eds.) with a foreword of Boutros-Boutros Ghali, *Building a Just World. Essays in Honour of Muchkund Dubey,* Inde, New Delhi, Orient Black Swan, 2015, pp. 144-161). The quotation above raises many questions : will military powers continue to determine the future of the world ? Can military forces establish a world order based on peace, justice and non-violence ? Does economic development entail military development ? Is economic power equal with military power ? Is there any other force than military that may rule the world locally and globally ? Do the weak, the poor, the marginalized, the dominated, the discriminated, the oppressed, the disadvantaged have any chance to change their state of being in a non-violent way ? It is to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi that the questions of world order based on peace, justice and non-violence are chosen to be the main subject of presentation and discussion of the third edition of The Rise of Asia Conference Series. It encourages the participation of scholars from a wide range of scientific disciplines (area studies, cultural studies, ecology, economics, geography, history, humanities, languages, management, political and social sciences…) and practitioners from diverse professional fields (business, civil society, education, enterprise, government, management, parliament, public policy, social and solidarity movements…), based in diverse geographical areas (Africa, North and South America, Australia, Asia, Europe, Pacific…). *SPECIAL SEANCES / ROUNDTABLES / WORKSHOPS *Special sessions/Roundtables/Workshops will be organised if there is enough number of proposals on the following topics: Asia-Africa Asia-Asia Asia-Eastern Europe Asia-Latin America Asia-Middle East-North Africa Asia-North America Asia-Pacific-Oceania Asia-Western Europe Asia-World System BRICS-World Order Culture-Literature -Religion-Spirituality Ecology-Architecture-Urbanism Gender-Women Issues Fwd: "LET’S TRAIN HUMANS FIRST….BEFORE WE TRAIN MACHINES"
by Michel Bauwens 01 Dec '18

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Hazel Henderson <hazel.henderson(a)ethicalmarkets.com> Date: Fri, Nov 30, 2018 at 9:40 PM Subject: "LET’S TRAIN HUMANS FIRST….BEFORE WE TRAIN MACHINES" To: Ethical Markets <gogreen(a)ethicalmarkets.com> Dear Esteemed global Advisory Board and Judges Panel, Please see the below article, recently published in SeekingAlpha <https://seekingalpha.com/instablog/244947-hazel-henderson/5242818-let-s-tra…> . Your feedback would be appreciated. Thank you, Hazel [image: Hazel Henderson] <https://seekingalpha.com/author/hazel-henderson/instablogs> Hazel Henderson's Blog <https://seekingalpha.com/author/hazel-henderson/instablogs> | Ethical Markets <http://www.ethicalmarkets.com> Please Note: Blog posts are not selected, edited or screened by Seeking Alpha editors. *"LET’S TRAIN HUMANS FIRST….BEFORE WE TRAIN MACHINES"* Nov. 30, 2018 3:19 PM ET Hazel Henderson© 2018 We humans are at the absurd stage in our technological evolution when we seem to have abandoned our common sense. Billions are spent by governments, corporations and investors in training computer-based algorithms (i.e. computer programs) in today’s mindless rush to create so-called "artificial" intelligence, widely advertised as AI. Meanwhile, training our children and their brains (already superior to computer algorithms) is under-funded, schools are dilapidated, sited in run-down, often polluted areas while our teachers are poorly paid and need greater respect. How did our national priorities get so skewed? In reality, there is nothing artificial about these algorithms or their intelligence, and the term "AI" is a mystification! The term that describes the reality is "Human-Trained Machine Learning", in today’s mad scramble to train these algorithms to mimic human intelligence and brain functioning. In the techie magazine WIRED, October 2018, we meet a pioneering computer scientist, Fei-Fei LI, testifying at a Congressional hearing, who underlines this truth. She said, "Humans train these algorithms" and she talked about the horrendous mistakes these machines make in mis-identifying people, using the term "bias in—bias out" updating the old computer saying, "garbage in—garbage out". Professor LI described how we are ceding our authority to these algorithms to judge who gets hired, who goes to jail, who gets a loan, a mortgage or good insurance rates --- and how these machines code our behavior, change our rules and our lives. She is now back at Stanford University after a time as an ethicist at Google and has started a foundation to promote the truth about AI, since she feels responsible for her role in inventing some of these algorithms herself. As a celebrated pioneer of this field, Professor LI says "There’s nothing artificial about AI. It’s inspired by people, it’s created by people and more importantly, it impacts people". So how did Silicon Valley invade our culture and worldwide technology programs with its short-term, money -obsessed values: "move fast and break things"; disrupt the current systems while rushing to scale and cash out with an IPO? These values are discussed by two insiders in shocking detail, by Antonio G. Martinez in "Chaos Monkeys" <http://www.ethicalmarkets.com/book-review-chaos-monkeys-and-the-nature-of-v…> (2016) and Bloomberg’s Emily Chang in "Brotopia" <https://smile.amazon.com/Brotopia-Breaking-Boys-Silicon-Valley/dp/073521353…> (2018). These authors explain a lot about how training these algorithms went so wrong: subconsciously mimicking their mostly male, misogynist, often white entrepreneurs and techies with their money-making monopolistic biases and often adolescent, libertarian fantasies. I also explored all this in my article "The Future of Democracy Challenged in the Digital Age" <http://www.ethicalmarkets.com/cadmus-the-future-of-democracy-challenged-in-…>, CADMUS, October 2018, describing all these issues of the takeover by AI of our economic sectors; from manufacturing, transport, education, retail, media, law, medicine, agriculture, to banking, insurance and finance. While many of these sectors have become more efficient and profitable for the shareholders, my conclusion in "The Idiocy of Things" <http://www.ethicalmarkets.com/the-idiocy-of-things-requires-an-information-…> critiqued the connecting of all appliances in so-called "smart homes" as quite hazardous and an invasion of privacy. I urged humans to take back control from the over-funded, over-invested, over-paid computer and information science sectors too often focused on corporate efficiency and cost-saving goals driven by the profit targets demanded by Wall Street. I have called for an extension of the English law, settled in the year 1215: "habeas corpus" affirming that humans own their own bodies. This extension would cover ownership of our brains and all our information we generate in an updated "information habeas corpus". Since May 2018, European law has ratified this with its General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which stipulates that individuals using social media platforms, or any other social system do indeed retain ownership of all their personal data. So, laws are beginning to catch up with the inhuman uses of human beings, with our hard-earned skills being used to train algorithms that then replace us! The computer algorithm trainers then employ out of-work people surviving in the gig economy on Mechanical Turk and Task Rabbit sites, in minimum, hourly- paid data entry tasks to train these algorithms! Scientist Jaron Lanier in his "Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Now" <http://www.ethicalmarkets.com/social-media-fangs-in-the-crosshairs-takeaway…> (2018) shows how social media are manipulating us with algorithms to engineer changes in our behavior, by engaging our attention with clickbait and content that arouses our emotions, fears and rage, playing on some of the divisions in our society to keep us on their sites. This helps drive ad sales and their gargantuan profits and rapid global growth. Time to rethink all this, beyond the dire alarms raised by Bill Gates, Elon Musk and the late Stephen Hawking that these algorithms we are teaching will soon take over and may harm or kill us as did HAL in the movie "2001". Why indeed are we spending all this money to train machines while short-changing our children, our teachers and schools? Training our children's brains must take priority! Instead of training machines to hijack our attention and sell our personal data to marketers for profit --- let's steer funds into tripling efforts to train and pay our teachers, upgrade schools and curricula with courses on civic responsibility, justice, community values, freedoms under habeas corpus (women also own their own bodies!) and how ethics and trust are the basis of all market and societies. Why all the expensive efforts to enhance machine learning to teach algorithms to recognize human faces, guide killer drones, falsify video images and further modify our behavior and capture our eyeballs with click bait, devising and spreading content that angers and outrages --- further dividing us and disrupting democracies? Let's rein in the Big Brother ambitions of the new techno-oligopolists. As a wise NASA scientist, following Norbert Weiner's Human Use of Human Beings (1950), reminded us in 1965 about the value of humans: "Man (SIC <https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/SIC>) is the lowest-cost, 150 pound, nonlinear all-purpose computer system which can be mass-produced by un-skilled labor", quoted in Foreign Affairs, July-August, 2015, p. 11. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Stephanie Rearick <steph(a)stephanierearick.com> Date: Tue, Nov 27, 2018 at 1:32 AM Subject: We need you double on Giving Tuesday! Mutual Aid for Social Justice To: Stephanie Rearick <steph(a)mutualaidnetwork.org> We need your support tomorrow. Tomorrow, November 27, is Giving Tuesday! For one day only, Facebook will match every dollar you give to our campaign. (read more about the campaign below) Our goal for tomorrow is to raise $10,000. If we achieve this, that would mean we are over halfway to our campaign goal of $50,000! You can help us reach our #GivingTuesday goal by donating through the Social Justice Center’s Facebook page. The #GivingTuesday fundraising post will be live tomorrow. I will also e-mail you the link where you can donate once it’s live. Every dollar you give tomorrow will go twice as far, so please donate whatever amount you can. As always, please share via Facebook and e-mail. If you were going to give, make tomorrow the day -- and double your impact! Thank you so much for your support, Stephanie — more details: Our vision for the SJC is to be a hub of Madison social justice organizing, collaboration and activism and tomorrow is your chance to help us make our vision a reality. We are halfway done with renovations that will transform our shared building on Willy Street but we need additional support to pay our construction bills and keep our space affordable for our member organizations. We started a massive crowdfunding campaign - so far we’ve raised over $6,000 of the $50,000 we need. But we still have a long way to go.
