Leaving Facebook for a indeterminate time
by Michel Bauwens 18 Aug '18

18 Aug '18

dear friends, I am leaving FB for a as yet indeterminate period of time, This almost means that my curation duties are hold, since I have no ready alternative. The reasons for my departure are not technical but have to do with a unfortunate polarisation on the p2p foundation's fb group, that I have been unable to steer in a positive momentum, Michel -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: Commercial Trade Exchange Architecture and Operations
by Michel Bauwens 17 Aug '18

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Thomas H. Greco, Jr. <thg(a)mindspring.com> Date: Thu, Aug 16, 2018 at 8:58 PM Subject: Commercial Trade Exchange Architecture and Operations To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> A Conversation with Chip Davis and Charlie Davis of the Moxey trade network This newsletter edition contains a single item, one of great importance to the emerging process of direct credit clearing as an adjunct to conventional money payments. ------------------------------ Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/92e9e89b3675/commercial-trade-exchange-architecture-and-…> . *Commercial Trade Exchange Architecture and Operations—A Conversation with Chip Davis and Charlie Davis* *Thomas H. Greco, Jr.* Recently, I came across an article about what seems to be a significant development in the commercial trade exchange industry. Published on February 15, 2018, the article, *TradeAuthority rebrands as Moxey with new digital currency, national expansion plans* <https://beyondmoney.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3cbee2e1cfc237bcae4ed…>, tells about the expansion and rebranding of a commercial trade exchange heretofore known as *TradeAuthority.* Operating for the past several years in the Gulf Coast region of the southern United States, TradeAuthority has developed along lines somewhat different from most other trade exchange companies. I’ve had some peripheral knowledge of TradeAuthority for a long time but after reading the article I decided it was time for me to reach out to its founder, Chip Davis, with the intention of gaining a more detailed picture of how they operate and their plans for further development and expansion. The company, now named Moxey <https://beyondmoney.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3cbee2e1cfc237bcae4ed…>, is a network of 14 autonomous member-owned local trade exchanges, member ownership being a unique feature in the commercial trade exchange industry. The key players in the Moxey enterprise are Chip Davis, founder of TradeAuthority and current Executive Vice President of Moxey, Charlie Davis, President of Moxey <https://beyondmoney.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3cbee2e1cfc237bcae4ed…>, and Warren Sager, Moxey Vice President of Operations. *Some Key Questions* In my message to Chip Davis, I posed the following questions: - What degree of autonomy do the various (14) exchanges in your network have? - Is it possible for a member in one exchange to buy/sell directly with a member of another exchange in the network? Does your platform provide that functionality or does the trade need to be pre-arranged with brokers in the two exchanges? - Is there a single Moxey ledger for the entire network or does each exchange have its own? If the latter, how are accounts reconciled among the exchanges, and how often? - Do you participate in UC? [UC is “Universal Currency,” a credit currency that many trade exchanges use to enable their members to buy goods and services from members of different trade exchanges.] - What are the factors you use to allocate lines of credit? How are they weighted? Are all exchanges in the network required to apply the same algorithm in allocating credit lines to their members? - You say, “Moxey intends to be a better Medium of Exchange by removing the concern of inflation.” How does it do that? - Is you online portal a complete marketplace that includes offers and requests? Vendor and client background? Reputation ratings? - When using the app or online portal, is approval of the transaction immediate? - You also say, “It also removes the extreme deflationary dangers that can exist in a purer form of money such as gold.” Can you explain that? - What additional functionality will be achieved by using blockchain? “The major thing behind all currencies is a trust and transparency in knowing the currency is strong and blockchain technology will allow an additional level of transparency,” says Warren Sager, Moxey vice president of operations. “It will allow our currency to become stronger and more trustworthy.” But that does not address the transparency of the credit allocation process. Please comment. - The trade exchange industry seems to have been for some time on a plateau or slow growth trajectory. How do you see moneyless trading alternatives evolving over the next few years, and how much of an increase in scale do you anticipate? Michel, Thought this blog post might be of interest. Yea for free trade, I'm now far wealthier than I was before. *That's the story. Feel better about "free" trade and globalization now?* Oh wait a minute, there's something missing--the part about "prosperity for all of us." Here's labor's share of U.S. GDP, which includes imports and exports, i.e. trade: *Notice how labor's share of the economy tanked once globalization / offshoring kicked into high gear?* Now let's see what happened to corporate profits at that same point in time: *Imagine that--corporate profits skyrocketed once globalization / offshoring kicked into high gear.* Explain that part about "makes us all prosperous" again, because there's no data to support that narrative. *What's interesting about all this is the way that politicians are openly threatening voters with recession if they vote against globalization.* In other words, whatever "prosperity" is still being distributed to the bottom 80% is now dependent on a predatory version of globalization. *Let's rewind to the era of truly free trade, from the late Bronze Age up to the Roman Era.* In the late Bronze Age (circa 1800 to 1200 B.C.), vigorous trade tied together the ancient empires and states of the Mideast and the Mediterranean. In the Roman Era, trade in silk and other luxuries tied China, India, Africa, the Mideast and the Roman Mediterranean together in a vast trading network. In the good old days, merchants paid for goods in gold or silver, as the value of the precious metals were known to all and relatively easy to transport and verify. *Nowadays, trade and "prosperity" are dependent on currencies that are created out of thin air via borrowing or printing.* The problem with gold, in the view of predatory globalization, is that it can't be printed or conjured out of thin air. That won't do, because predatory globalization's primary export is newly printed currencies: dollars, euros, yen and yuan. *This puts every nation that can't print a global reserve currency at an extreme disadvantage.* While the U.S. can conjure "money" out of thin air and trade it for goods, other nations must cough up resources and goods in exchange for the "money," and borrow it at hefty rates of interest if they want to use the global "money" for development or investment. *That leaves them highly vulnerable to foreign exchange fluctuations* which can raise the cost of their interest due in dollars, etc. to punishing heights while devaluing whatever they built with the dollars, etc. they borrowed. *Then there's a financial crisis of loan defaults and those who created and loaned out their global reserve currency demand the debtor nation sell all its assets and resources at bargain prices.* Being a member of the European Union didn't save Greece from this fate; no peripheral nation can protect itself from the predatory powers who can create currency at zero cost and send the value higher by restricting its issuance after other nations have loaded up on loans denominated in the reserve currency. *This is how "free" trade works in predatory globalization:* The only thing that's free is the cost of issuing trillions in global reserve currency. Everything else will cost you dearly. *Christopher* ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Musings <https://www.oftwominds.com/musings-sample.html> My Books <https://www.oftwominds.com/CHS-books.html> Archives <https://www.oftwominds.com/archives.html> Books/Films <https://www.oftwominds.com/books.html> * ------------------------------ *Our "Prosperity" Is Now Dependent on Predatory Globalization* <https://www.oftwominds.com/blogaug18/predatory-globalization8-18.html> *August 15, 2018* *Nowadays, trade and "prosperity" are dependent on currencies that are created out of thin air via borrowing or printing. * *So here's the story explaining why "free" trade and globalization create so much wonderful prosperity for all of us:* I find a nation with cheap labor and no environmental laws anxious to give me cheap land and tax credits, so I move my factory from my high-cost, highly regulated nation to the low-cost nation, and keep all the profits I reap from the move for myself. The agenda of transformative towns and cities for the 2019 European elections Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO), Transnational Institute (TNI), Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS) and Barcelona En Comú 16 October 2018, Brussels The local level has long been a laboratory of social mobilization and democratic innovation in Europe and around the world. But now, more than ever before, it is municipalism - action from town councils and city halls, in alliance with social movements - that is creating alternatives to a Europe of corporate interests, privatization and the rollback of human rights. In Spain, ‘cities of change’ are combating speculation and defending the right to housing; in Italy, local governments are creating new legal mechanisms to protect the urban commons; in Poland, urban movements are fighting environmental degradation and air pollution; and in cities across Europe energy and water delivery is being taking back in public hands after failed privatisation. Progressive municipal governments are using ethical public procurement and other tools to promote vibrant local solidarity economies. Progressive municipalism is transforming Europe from the bottom up. A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed Wednesday morning by the nonprofit legal group Earthjustice is asking the government for details about plans to keep immigrants at Fort Bliss in El Paso and Goodfellow Air Force Bases in San Angelo. Fort Bliss <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> is a source of particular concern for advocates — the area is listed as a Superfund, meaning that areas have been designated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a priority for cleanup due to the dangers they pose to human health and the environment. At Goodfellow, tents meant to house people will be constructed directly over a former firing range, not far from an uncapped landfill.… Read in browser » <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Post Comment <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: share on Twitter] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: Like Advocates probe White House plans to house immigrants at toxic waste sites on Facebook] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Austerity kills: this week’s figures show its devastating toll <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> *on Aug 10, 2018 02:34 am* Owen Jones - The Guardian (U.K.) This is a story about the U.K. but it would apply to any country. The small government austerity policies so beloved by conservatives worldwide never work, and always create distress and a degraded quality of life for the people who must live under such policies. Why, then, do conservative governments continue to implement such policies. The answer I think is that conservatives never put facts above ideology. Here's what happens. A variation is happening here. *Architects of austerity: George Osborne and David Cameron in 2015.* *Credit: Ben Birchall/PA* “We got there in the end <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> – a remarkable national effort”: that’s how former chancellor George Osborne celebrated the government meeting his deficit target on the day-to-day budget two years late. “It was the right thing to do <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…>,” was David Cameron’s smug echo. It’s easy for the architects of the Tories’ ideologically driven austerity to be triumphalist, given they did not suffer the consequences: the worst squeeze in wages of the major industrialised countries <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> except depression-ravaged Greece; the slashing of social security for low-paid workers and disabled people; the surging child poverty <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…>. New research suggests that austerity played a key role in the Brexit vote, <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> which plunged Britain into national crisis, too, and which turfed both men out of office, although both continue to prosper, Cameron with his “trotters up”, as Danny Dyer so memorably put it. But there is another devastating consequence of their austerity that is too little discussed: that it kills. According to newly published figures from the Office for National Statistics <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…>, Britain’s improvement in life expectancy has slowed <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> at the fastest rate of any leading industrialised nation other … Read in browser » <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Post Comment <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: share on Twitter] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: Like Austerity kills: this week’s figures show its devastating toll on Facebook] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Court orders ban on harmful pesticide, says EPA violated law <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> *on Aug 10, 2018 02:33 am* MICHAEL BIESECKER - Associated Press More and more as American democracy is dismantled by the Trump administration while the Republican quislings in Congress sit on their hands, protecting the country has fallen to a small cadre of judges. Honorable men and women who stand up for the country when no one else will. Here is some good news as an example of how this is happening. In my opinion, Scott Pruitt should be charged with mass murder and put on trial. *Scott Pruitt* WASHINGTON, D.C. — *A federal appeals court ruled Thursday that the Trump administration endangered public health by keeping a widely used pesticide on the market despite extensive scientific evidence that even tiny levels of exposure can harm babies’ brains. (emphasis added)* The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to remove chlorpyrifos from sale in the United States within 60 days. A coalition of farmworkers and environmental groups sued last year after then-EPA chief Scott Pruitt reversed an Obama-era effort to ban chlorpyrifos, which is widely sprayed on citrus fruit, apples and other crops. The attorneys general for several states joined the case against EPA, including California, New York and Massachusetts. In a split decision, the court said Thursday that Pruitt, a Republican forced to resign earlier this summer amid ethics scandals, violated federal law by ignoring the conclusions of agency scientists that chlorpyrifos is harmful. “The panel held that there was no justification for the EPA’s decision in its 2017 order to maintain a tolerance for chlorpyrifos in the face of scientific evidence that its residue on food causes neurodevelopmental damage to children,” Judge Jed S. Lockhart - Vox Today I saw three stories reporting police thuggery; this is one of them. No one who would think it was acceptable to use a taser on an 11 year old girl should be a sworn police officer. Yet American law enforcement is filled with thousands of such low IQ bullies. On my own island the police chief was just fired for such bullying activity. What's it like where you live? Are you even paying attention to this issue? *The Cincinnati Police Department is under scrutiny for using a Taser on an 11-year-old girl.* *Credit: Craig F. Walker/The Denver Post* The Cincinnati Police Department is under intense scrutiny after an off-duty police officer used a Taser on an 11-year old black girl <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…>, prompting allegations of excessive force and raising new concerns about how the department uses Tasers. The incident happened at a local grocery store on Monday. According to local reports <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…>, off-duty police officer Kevin Brown was working as a security guard at the store and suspected 11 year-old Donesha Gowdy of shoplifting. The police department noted that she was seen placing food into a backpack and did not stop when Brown approached her as she left the store. Brown then fired his Taser, striking the girl in the back. The girl was arrested for “theft and obstructing official business” and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. On Wednesday evening, Cincinnati Mayor John Cranely announced <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> that charges against the girl had been dropped. In interviews with news outlets on Wednesday, Gowdy and her mother acknowledged that the girl had taken items from the store, but explained that using a Taser was an inappropriate response to … Read in browser » <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> Post Comment <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: share on Twitter] <https://schwartzreport.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b50db294056098aa2e…> [image: Like An 11-year-old girl was suspected of shoplifting groceries.
