Maybe the cataclysm has already arrived. Nearly every day, there is some new bulletin <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> about a raging wildfire or a ferocious typhoon or a biblical flood. Often, it's buried by news of a Presidential Porn Star Payoff, or a tape from Omarosa. But it's still happening. The American West is still on fire, even if we refuse to pay attention — except when the president is doling out moronic advice on how to deal with it <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> . Large portions of Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent spent the summer drowning in floodwater. Greece, too, spent the month of July on fire. Europe fried in a heatwave, as portions of the British Isles recorded their highest-ever June temperatures <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>, Sweden had its hottest July in 260 years, and the temperature in Siberia ticked up to 90 degrees <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> . It's in that vein that Tuesday's news arrives, a startling report in *The Guardian <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *that even the portion of Arctic ice that scientists have long thought the most secure has already begun to falter: *The oldest and thickest sea ice in the Arctic has started to break up, opening waters north of Greenland that are normally frozen, even in summer. This phenomenon – which has never been recorded before – has occurred twice this year due to warm winds and a climate-change driven <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> heatwave in the northern hemisphere ... The sea off the north coast of Greenland is normally so frozen that it was referred to, until recently, as “the last ice area” because it was assumed that this would be the final northern holdout against the melting effects of a hotter planet.* While the most immediate worry around melting ice is rising sea levels that will endanger coastal communities, there's growing concern among scientists that it will also fuel feedback loops that accelerate warming. For instance, ice is lightly colored and reflective. But as it melts, it reveals the darker-colored land or ocean water below. Those surfaces will absorb more heat <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>, accelerating the rate at which nearby ice melts and sea levels rise. As the permafrost melts in Siberia and elsewhere, it will release methane — a gas that does not linger as long in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide but is about 30 times more powerful in trapping heat <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> . <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> Scientists are also increasingly worried that warming global temperatures are eroding the polar vortex <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>, the wind system that keeps the Arctic frozen. The Gulf Stream, a warm current in the Atlantic that <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> "has played an important part in abrupt climate change in the past," is at its weakest level in 1,600 years due to melting ice and warming ocean temperatures. All this could push our planet towards what's called a "hothouse state," where feedback loops are sufficiently powerful that human attempts to reduce emissions and scale back warming may be essentially futile. It is a point of no return. So where, in this summer of emerging doom, does the world's most powerful country find itself? Well, to start with, its president offered his thoughts on windmills and "clean coal" last week: <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Daniel Dale <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>* *✔@ddale8 <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> * We seem to have gotten used to the idea that the President of the United States is a world-historical clown whose worldview is rooted in fragments of reality he internalized decades ago and now filters through the kaleidoscope of his severely limited reasoning faculties. He is an emblem of arrogant stupidity, a case study in the essentially destructive quality of stubborn anti-intellectualism that pervades American life. There is an emerging genre <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> of journalism <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> just trying to parse what the hell Donald Trump said in this one instance. It appears to be a nest of falsehoods and decades-old personal beefs. After all, the indications are that Trump hates wind power so much because a Scottish firm tried to build a wind farm <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> off the coast of his golf course there, which he feared would ruin the views. He's spent the years since spreading misinformation about wind energy and fine-tuning his concern-trolling about dead birds. Yeah, the guy whose administration is dismantling the Endangered Species Act <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> is real worried about avian welfare. But some of it is accurate. Coal exports were indeed up about 60 percent <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> from 2016 to 2017, though "clean coal exports" do not exist. ("Clean coal" does not refer to coal that doesn't pollute the atmosphere and contribute to global warming—such coal does not exist. Clean coal just means you attempt to capture some of the CO2 released when you burn it, and there's no telling if the places we export to will do that.) More to the point, coal has gotten less competitive with the rise of cheap natural gas, so the Trump administration has been propping it up <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> using a Cold War-era law to declare coal facilities as national security infrastructure. The policy mandates that energy distributors buy enough power from coal plants to keep them open. In effect, we are subsidizing perhaps the dirtiest fossil fuel as the climate crisis deepens. Yes, workers in many coal-producing areas are struggling. Will this really save their livelihoods? <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> And at what cost? Beyond that, Donald Trump has ensured that the United States of America is the only country in the world <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> that refuses to participate in the Paris climate accords, a non-binding global agreement to reduce emissions. He announced the U.S. was pulling out <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> in a Rose Garden ceremony that will go down as a monumental national embarrassment <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>. His administration is attempting to roll back the Obama-era Clean Power Plan <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>, our nation's primary mechanism for abiding by its emissions reductions goals under the Paris agreement. It is rolling back regulations on emissions of methane <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>, the greenhouse gas 30 times as powerful as carbon dioxide, at drilling sites. It is rolling back regulations on automobile emissions <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>. It is rolling back everything. <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> It is genuinely amazing that standing in the breach of history is a reality television star who knows nothing about anything and cares less, having proudly declared that a monumental threat to human civilization is a hoax created by the Chinese. <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> He insists windmills are only good for killing birds. He doles out advice to firefighters battling the wildfires feasting on western lands ravaged by drought in between rounds of golf. Even before this new era of national disgrace, the Republican Party had established itself as the only major political party in the western world that denied the scientific consensus that climate change is real and man-made. Any Republican president would likely have plunged the nation further into self-defeating stupidity and greed. But there is something uniquely jarring, and outrageous, about rants comparing windmills unfavorably to "clean coal" as a new region of the Arctic ice shelf lurches towards collapse. If we make it that far, the history books will remember us for discussing Stormy Daniels and The National Debt while the world burned and flooded and weathered increasingly ferocious storms, such obvious signs of what is to come. I have heard of this kind of agroforestry in the African context of the mountain Chaga clan communities living on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Very large, almost urban, communities were said to live on the slopes but their size unapparent because of the cultivated forests they lived in the midst of. Similar approaches, but built on a base of polyspecies aquaculture, was planned for the The Millennial Project —in part, I suppose, because Mt. Kilimanjaro figured largely in that space development scheme and the originally planned marine arcologies seemed to mimic it in shape. Potential for carbon sequester in the the Amazonian area has also been attributed to ‘terra preta’ cultivation ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_preta <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_preta> ), which was another industry I proposed for TMP building on its possible mariculture waste. So-called ‘food forest’ gardening or ‘wild gardening’ has become something of a fad recently in the US, serving to promote and circulate ideas of permaculture. However, while they save effort in maintenance overhead and can be attractive, they don’t actually produce as much as high-density urban farming techniques do, at least in the temperate zones. Still, certainly a hell of a lot better than a yard full of grass… Eric Hunting erichunting(a)gmail.com

Fwd: Have you heard about Syntropic Agriculture?

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Ryan Fortune <ryan.fortune2012(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Aug 21, 2018 at 9:01 AM Subject: Have you heard about Syntropic Agriculture? To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Brazilian farmer Ernst Gotsch has formulated a method of farming that works harmoniously with nature to help fight climate change & feed the world. View this email in your browser <https://us8.campaign-archive.com/?e=83be33d795&u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef312&…> <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Have you heard about Syntropic Agriculture? * <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *By Patricia Sendin, architect for 20+ years* *and founder of Send a City <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>.* *Blog: Not Only About Architecture <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>* <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> "There is no such thing as a poor soil," says Ernst Götsch <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>, a farmer and researcher who for the past 30 years has turned degraded land in Brazil into highly productive *agroforests <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>* (trees and crops) *using no chemical inputs, heavy machinery or irrigation. * Since Götsch hardly publishes papers, I have traveled to Brazil to learn first hand how he manages to create net positive ecosystems that produce food while restoring soils and trapping outstanding amounts of carbon. *As it happens, his method is nature-inspired, intuitive and easy to understand; it carries almost no cost and works in all ecosystems. If we were to leave it to nature to fix climate change and food security, this is how she would do it. * *Why does the subject matter? * Feeding the world releases 17,000 megatonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually (source <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>) - 47% of the total global emissions - and still leaves 795 million people - 10% of the global population - chronically malnourished. The Sustainable Development Goals 2, End Hunger <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>, and 13, Climate Action <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>, are an inspiring call on how we can help, yet a complete rethink on how we produce food is desperately needed. Another important aspect relates to how and where we will live in future. Despite projections that foresee 70% of the world population living in urban areas by 2050 (source <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>), most likely the opposite scenario - a migration to the countryside - will be true, considering the factors below. ------------------------------ <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Factors contributing to a new urban-to-rural migration trend | by Send a City <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>* ------------------------------ But we may also be pushed towards rural living, if the commitment to limit the temperature increase by 2100 to 2ºC adopted at the COP21 gets implemented. According to the Committee on Climate Change <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> to achieve this goal the global emissions should peak at 2020 and be halved (or more) by 2050, which means per capita CO2 emissions in 2050 averaging around 2 tonnes. This is a reduction of 72% relative to today 7.3 t CO2e/capita. Mission (or rather *emission*) impossible unless we radically change the way we live. According to a study <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> by the Federal University of Ceará in Brazil, bigger cities produce more carbon dioxide per capita than small ones. "This shouldn't be a surprise," says the research team, "there are many aspects of cities that scale with population size, such as the number of jobs, houses and water consumption." In light of this, if we were to plan the most carbon-efficient community, it ought to be on the smaller size. But how dense should it be? Here is where agroforests enter the picture. If a community were to integrate an agroforestry system, it could offset part of their CO2 emissions with the CO2 sequestered by its plants. According to Cooperafloresta <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> Brazil *(see picture below)* agroforests sequester approximately 10 tonnes of CO2 per hectare per year: 6.6 tCO2/ha/yr from the air and 3.5 tCO2/ha/yr through pruning. If the per capita emission today is 7,3 t CO2 and the number is smaller in smaller towns, we could assume a possible per capita CO2 emission in a small town of 4 tonnes. Since our emissions allowance will be 2 t CO2e/capita, we'd need to offset the other 2 tonnes. The 10 tCO2/ha/yr sequestered by an agroforest is equivalent to the CO2 produced by 5 people/ha (or 500 people/km2) at 2 t CO2e/capita. To conclude: *a small town **with a density of 500 people/km2 will meet the 2050 climate action targets by means of incorporating agroforestry, **without their inhabitants having to shift customs or behaviour*. Needless to say, however, that the behavioural change will in any case occur through the practice of agroforestry: people would consume organic, locally produced food which will further reduce their carbon footprint (agroforestry produces 40 tonnes of food per hectare per year!). Agroforestry practised in small, sparsely-populated communities would be a way to meet the climate targets and could lead to carbon neutral (or carbon positive) living. This surely sounds like heresy to urban planners, since it looks like a return to "urban sprawl", the phenomenon we've been fighting for the past 25 years. But it won't be comparable since 1) the conditions are very different: people will work locally and/or remotely, consume less, travel less etc, 2) compact cities will still exist, and 3) "urban density" is like "fiscal austerity", in theory a good idea, but in practice not really taking us where we want to be. ------------------------------ <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Carbon sequestration in agroforests | Study by Cooperafloresta <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>* ------------------------------ *Syntropic agriculture and the work of Ernst Götsch* <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Ernst Götsch at 4th Workshop on Syntropic Agriculture | Photo: Chris Lima* ------------------------------ The eye opener for Ernst Götsch (born in Switzerland, 1948) was a trip to the tropics in 1976 when he was stunned by the contrast between the poverty of cultivated lands and the wealth of the bordering tropical rainforest (1). He found similar wealth resulting from the way small farmers worldwide had been practising agriculture for over thousand years. They would combine trees with crops and/or pastures (agroforestry) to achieve an increase in biodiversity and an improvement of soil fertility, thus leading to a higher productivity. Exactly the opposite than conventional agriculture achieves with monocultures and the use of herbicides, pesticides and mineral fertilisers. Taking agroforestry as a baseline, Götsch developed by means of trial and error a system called regenerative analog agroforestry <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>, known in Brazil for its acronym SAFRA. This method works with processes rather than inputs and supplements agroforestry with strategic interventions *(see below)* and the natural succession of species in a system. This, according to Götsch, is what ultimately brings a system to thrive and not the initial quality of the soil or the amount of light it receives (2). He observed that the natural succession of species is one of the driving forces of life. Götsch's research and work keeps unfolding and he now refers to it as syntropic agriculture <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> since it actually follows the law of syntropy (3), also known as negative entropy, or the principles that sustain life. He also defines his work as "a way to create a positive energy balance in the world by means of unconditional love and cooperation." His numbers are as impressive as his methodology. He produces in his farm in Bahia cacao beans so superior in quality that they sell for four times the market price to Italian Amedei, the best chocolate producer in the world according to the London Academy of Chocolate, says an article in O Globo Rural this month (4). "The quality comes from the ecological balance of the system", Götsch says in the article. Since his method requires no inputs, Götsch produces his cacao at zero cost. He also achieves higher than average yields and his crops are unaffected by pests. His best numbers though are in his comparison of the energy efficiency of nature and technology: ------------------------------ <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Energy efficiency comparison of nature and tech | Photo by Chris Lima, edited by PS* ------------------------------ *"Nature uses for its metabolic processes approx 3% of its capital in order to achieve a 10 to 15% surplus."* This means, nature *(green line above)* will always increase its energy (syntropy) since it produces more than it consumes. Technology, on the contrary, will always tend towards energy depletion since to achieve the same surplus of 10%, a combustion engine, for instance, burns between 70-75% of its fuel energy. That is, it consumes more than it produces and will always need energy added to its system (entropy). *Technology will never lead to abundance, but nature will.* Götsch's syntropic agriculture mimics nature: it produces its own fertiliser, creates abundant black soil and nutrients, retains water and optimizes its circulation. Notwithstanding the complexity of the system that requires in-depth knowledge of the local flora, Götsch believes that everyone can be a practitioner and encourages students to focus on understanding the processes rather than on the details. His advice: to experiment with the species and to keep an open heart for new knowledge to flow in. ------------------------------ *Syntropic Agriculture Practices* *1. Permanent soil cover* In agroforestry the ground is covered throughout with organic matter obtained from weeding, pruning and removing plants. This material placed on the ground as mulch (chipped or unprocessed) both enriches and protects the soil. "Efforts are made to recycle and to increase the amount of organic material produced by the plantation itself" (2) thus doing away with the need for external fertilisers. An agroforestry site has on average 4kg of dry organic matter per m2, constantly decomposing. This equals to an estimated production of 6-10 kg of mulch /m2/yr with more than 3 to 5 prunings (5). The mulch fixes carbon dioxide in the ground, protects the soil from erosion and preserves water (some vegetable beds hadn't been watered for a month and a half). <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Wood chip mulch and small tree branches for the vegetable beds. Pruning * The drastic trimming of branches and trunks done on a regular basis is an important part of syntropic agriculture. Besides producing the dead material for the permanent soil cover, strategic pruning rejuvenates maturing plants and accelerates the rate of growth in the whole system by increasing the amount of light and nutrients available to the future generations of plants. It also speeds and directs the organic process of (plants) succession. Through pruning, the carbon trapped in the trees goes back to the soil. A mature agroforest (10-15 years old) has a carbon stock of 48 t/ha (source <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> ). ------------------------------ <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Acacia mangium pruning | Photo Chris Lima* <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Acacia mangium trunks and branches cut to equal size for vegetable beds | Photo Chris Lima* <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Smaller acacia mangium branches for vegetable beds borders | Photo Chris Lima* <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Acacia mangium trimmings and foliage used for mulch or processed for wood chip | Photo Chris Lima* *#3 Companion planting* "Living beings of each place and in each situation form consortia in which each member contributes with its particular capacity to improve and to optimize its conditions as well as those of the members of its consortium to grow, prosper and reproduce." (2) "It appears that the critical factor in determining health and growth rate of the plants, as well as the productivity rate of the system, is not the initial quality of the soil, but rather the composition and density of individuals of the plant community." (2) Götsch creates consortia of crop species with synergetic potentials that cooperate with each other. Maize, for instance, produces more when planted with beans or grass (brachiaria brizantha); bananas grow healthier with orange trees, pineapple with manioc. Despite the complexity of syntropic agriculture consortia, for the purpose of this workshop, we experimented with simple ones. We planted 3 to 5 crops, known to thrive together, like tomato, maize and green beans; maize, pumpkin and rucola; passion fruit, tomato, cucumber and chayote (*chuchú*). <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Tomatoes, maize, banana growing together.* <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *3 tomato seeds, 2 green beans and 2 maize, each in a separate hole, are planted in a handful of soil between tree marigold stem cuttings* <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Sowing layout #1. Adoption of successional elements* "Each consortium creates the conditions for a new consortium with a different composition. Hence, each consortium is determined by the preceding one and will determine the following one. The different consortia succeed one another in a dynamic, ongoing process called natural species succession." (2) "The order in which crops are planted is important, as most species only grow vigorously if they enter the flow of species succession in such a way that they come to dominate and to thrive in the system." (1) Equally critical for the establishment and development of a plant is the timing of when it appears. <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Natural species succession in agroforests | Snapshot of video <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> by Cooperafloresta <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…>* The sowing layout #1 (pictured above) paves the way for trees, in this case açai and cacao, to enter the system at a later stage. Tree marigold, a bush and a pioneer species, is the first to grow (quickly and abundantly). In 6 to 8 months it will be drastically cut, its organic matter left on the floor. Same will happen with the banana trees and the vegetable plants after their harvest in the same period of time. The açai and cacao seeds will then be planted in lieu of the ginger. This secondary system is expected to grow beautifully. <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *40cm long tree marigold stem cuttings, 35cm apart, buried to 2/3* <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *Tree marigold (margaridão) grown from stem cuttings in 6 months* <https://facebook.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4c039247ad2f92d6e7fcef31…> *The correct way to cut back a banana tree | Photo by Jenner Jon Lopes* ------------------------------ There are many other strategies included in the practice of syntropic agriculture and some bombshells. *"Eucalyptus promotes food production", says Götsch challenging the belief that it depletes the soil. "It produces gibberellic acid, which makes eucalyptus leaves a top quality mulch, and its roots bring water to the system rather than sequestering it." * Pests are non-existent in syntropic agriculture. Apparently pests go to weak plants and are therefore to be seen as an indicator of the plant's health rather than a threat. The way out is to address the plant's health by strengthening it. Pests then disappear naturally. Nothing to do though against birds eating crops. "That's life," says Götsch. Syntropic agriculture works in temperate climates too. This is the way our ancestors did things. Just take apples for açai and start the journey. *About* 4th Workshop on Syntropic Agriculture | Casimiro de Abreu, Rio de Janeiro 25-28 July 2016. Fwd: From Rajani: The End of Evolution?

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: r kanth <involutegandhian(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Aug 20, 2018 at 1:30 AM Subject: Fwd: From Rajani: The End of Evolution? To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> *Doomsday?* May not be far away. Remember Barry Mcguire? His song was titled ‘Eve of Destruction’. Could be an anthem for us all, in these times. Let me explain. Turns out I am not the only gloom-sayer around. The really hard act here is Dr. Guy Mcpherson, Biologist and Concerned Citizen(he’s all over *Youtube).* He is predicting an *early* , *abrupt*, extinction for us anthropic beings ( I detest the term ‘ homo sapiens’: *Homo Baceolus *might be more apt?). Here’s a digest. *Firstly,* our *Habitat.* Our species has been around for a bit. But 99% of all species are now extinct. Are we next? Yes, likely. In 1750 – the baseline year of Industrialisation - - planetary temp was at 13.5 Celsius. The species has survived, Guy estimates, at no more than about 2 Degrees above that, and that may be the highest that permits a real habitat for humans. Today we are already 1.6 Degrees above the 1750 baseline. Close. *Second*, ‘*Civilisation’ *– his term, not mine – is a veritable *heat engine.* Only way to turn off this heating is a total collapse of this’ civilisation’ *tout a fait.* But , *Third,* such a collapse of this ‘civ’ brings about, in turn, yet another crisis: *global dimming.* Industrial activity produces *particularates* that blanket the earth and block sun’s rays this ‘cooling’ the earth ( by some 3 degrees). If we stop that engine then the planet heats up some more , maybe , by another 4.5 Degrees. There goes our Habitat. *Fourth*, is what he calls the *Sixth (Mass) *Extinction: the *ominicide* extant that is killing off as many as , perhaps, 200 species *a day.* Their death presages ours. Plus, the steady melt of Arctic ice could release trapped methane in abrupt fashion. All that could shoot Planetary temp up to 19 Degrees, *within a year or two, at most:* *ergo,* crop failures, droughts, starvation, *et. al (*note, he sees the ‘commencement ‘ of this scenario within but a year or so). Pop goes the weasel. Why aren’t the powers that *shouldn’t *be telling us? Fear, of mass panic. Even science journals are loth to print such radical ideas. So, what can be done? *Nothing,* says Guy, since it’s out of control already. We are doomed. *Instead, he asks us to remain calm, pursue excellence, and pursue love.* Whew. Tall order. I like the last, the second to last is but an old affectation, and the first may be well beyond reach. I register only 2 informed objections – to his analysis - neither of them minor. No, ‘Western Civ’ is not ‘civ’, by any stretch ( I have explained this in many *Works*): it in fact a ‘culture of death’ , to use a telling phrase of environmentalist Vandana Shiva, that has brought us to this catastrophic pass. Second, if we are counting, it’s not the 6th, but, in fact, the 7th Extinction. *The Sixth was the genocide against Non-Europeans, carried out by Europe, non-stop since 1492.* Yes, *non-stop.* Have a look around. Other than that, his logic and facts appear sound. We need to listen to Barry. And to Guy. It’s time for soothsayers to step up: all others have, more or less, failed us. *[©R.Kanth 2018] * -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Dear George, you ask me 'what my take' is on the text by Rajani, it is first of al, that, 1) 'this could happen' , there are signs in that direction but 2), that we have to try to avoid or at best minimize, the worst outlooks, which are also politically demobilizing so 3) what if we propose smart mutualization to radically bring the footprint of humanity down, while maximizing the retention of civilizational services 4) crucial to that will be the invention of generative finance, i.e. rewarding regenerative activities rather than extractive ones, I'm working on this via: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hGzAAv9RRiVP3N7yhCDNPUMTYRbW-bQXJT6D3ur… I actually believe the contours of the solution have emerged, Michel -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Leaving Facebook for a indeterminate time
by Michel Bauwens 19 Aug '18

Dear George, I don't see how to the moment, since they object to open debate and critical inquiry; and very few people seem to support this with enough force. So it means retreating to what this group finds unobjectionable, and accepting self-censorship, which I don't feel I can do. To be honest, FB was taking too much of my time, and the only reason I stayed was the quality of my audience But then FB forbade to do any crossposting and responding to requests in other groups, then reduced my audience by two-thirds. When on top of that I discover that a strong and vocal minority opposes open inquiry and normalizes racism, it really stops me in my tracks. And you have only seen half of it, because on top of it, the private mails exhorting me to 'choose sides or else', having coming in as well (as well as supportive emails such as yours), but the public support on the site itself has been underwhelming. Right now, I am wounded emotionally, meaning that everytime I go back, it just re-opens it, so for sure, I need to get away at least for some time. But in all likelyhood, I will look for another medium, with more filtering capacity. Michel < Your service is too precious to the community. dear Sharon, Michael et al. Sharon, many thanks for this, and I think your reaction is infused with wisdom and experience, I have found leaving FB very liberating; it had become a burden since a very long time, and it took up half of my working day; I don't think I will be coming back any time soon as I had already decided with my colleagues to look for an alternative. It is unlike to be any corporate owned social media, but either some kind of newsletter (minimising the constant need for interaction) or some kind of integrated environment, we'll see. This may take quite a long time unless something comes along that really appeals to me. In the meantime, it gives a lot more time to read and reflect, Michel On Sat, Aug 18, 2018 at 7:51 PM Michael Lewis <Lewiscccr(a)shaw.ca> wrote: > Wonderfully said Sharon.
